Currently tax contributes only about 6% to our GDP — a very low figure, what this implies is that over the years Nigerians have not been paying taxes

Government needs multiple streams of income to help build the kind of infrastructure that would help develop this country - infrastructure that wound help attract the type of mega- companies that would employ thousands of our unemployed youth.

We cannot hide from the fact that we are a consumer society and we practically import most of our needs. The other day I sat in a bar watching people order foreign liqueur, using expensive foreign phones while dressed in the latest foreign gear - all sign of a looming disaster.

No type of voodoo economics ( or articulate bs) will help this county. We just need to make sacrificies to develop our infrastructure- 16yrs of pdp did not do that.

Taxing those Nigerians with foreign assets is a good move - first it would help reduce the incident of money laundering and secondly it would bring about some fairness - why should only salaried government (and registered private companies)workers be the only ones paying tax.

Every year I had to make tax returns in the states - the US government would ask you to list any properties you own abroad and tax them. I can upload a typical tax return form if you want to see it.

You have to list all properties and foreign buisnesses and you will be taxed.

There is also property tax - this is common in the US and it has nothing do with whether it is a commerical properly or not.

If you own a property abroad you should pay a property tax to your country of origin

The NASS would never pass such legislation because most of their members would be affected.

I have american friends who one property and busineses in Thailand and are still paying US taxes on those properties.

A lot of these guys on this forum haven't got a clue how civilized countries operate.

The Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI) has expressed shock and disappointment about the ethnic sentiment being given to the current investigation of the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), advising the Senator to carry his cross as a man and stop whipping up tribal sentiment.




“Politicians do not consult their constituencies and ethnicity when they embezzle public funds but are very quick to whip up ethnic sentiment whenever they are being prosecuted,” ARDI stated in a statement issued by its Executive Secretary, Dennis Aghanya on Sunday in Enugu.

“Fight against corruption does not recognize religion or ethnicity and therefore should not be given such colouration. Ekweremadu’s problem is personal and therefore should be treated as such. What he should be doing now is to assist the security agencies to speed up investigation so that he could prove his innocence or otherwise.”
