Yoighaman: "Ode" is a derogatory word, whether said jokingly or not.
I read another post of yours where you mentioned, "Big head", "nonsense boy/girl" etc, now these are words that allude to being playful and can never be (mis)interpreted as an insult.
It starts from "Ode" and gradually graduates to the use of more 'playful words', which eventually leads to insults that you actually mean.
And yes! A 'simple Ode' can crash a marriage over time; if how toothpaste is pressed can break a home, then we had better pay attention to the little things. Okay Sah. |

Aha! The second paragraph you say?You cheeky GenZ baby lawyer... Your anecdotes here cracked me up. In that case, objections overuled.
Case adjourned. But I didn't lie na. Any name calling for Mekwe is allowed. As the court pleases. My Lord, we are most grateful for your wise judgment. |
Family › Re: Marry Your Friend by folake4u: 9:32pm On May 28, 2023 |
Yoighaman: Exactly, "to each his own" You can see how 'successful' relationships and marriages have been with Gen Z
Mutual respect never goes out of fashion, and generational gap does not preclude it either. I beg to differ. Failed relationships/marriages have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Gen Z. There have been failed marriages existing even before the Millennial generation despite all the "mutual respect" and all of that. So na calling of one's spouse "Ode" dey lead to failed marriages? |
Family › Re: Marry Your Friend by folake4u: 9:06pm On May 28, 2023 |
Yoighaman: Irrespective of the age range by generation, what I meant was that it is an insult to call your spouse "Ode", whether you are joking or not. There should be some level of respect.
I don't know if this is what you mean as well. There was a typo in my last post. It's not an insult to us. Context matters. To each his own. |
Family › Re: Marry Your Friend by folake4u: 8:58pm On May 28, 2023 |
Yoighaman: But why call your spouse "Ode"? Love or marriage isn't an excuse for insult, whether said jokingly or not; it's like calling him or her "Oloshi".
There are better approaches. My opinion though. I see you're a Millennial. It's not an insult please, to us Gen Z especially when used jokingly. |

bukatyne: I want to follow peace this evening
Gen Z, the mental health generation.
Even for we late millenials, we are as far apart as year 1999 to year 2000.
I remember a Gen Z colleague who was talking about mental health and claustrophobia like you guys just invented the words.
I looked at her and told her that I have been claustrophobic since before she was born and it is not limiting me or affecting my 'mental health' in anyway.
Na patience we go dey use deal with una. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Na Gen Z we be oh, we nor kill person. But she's claustrophobic na. And you know say my generation always dey sóro sóke. Millenials nor dey talk, una too dey endure abeg. Na why this country still dey like this. As for me, my mental health is KEY. I nor dey use am play. I nor like stress at all.😊 |
Family › Re: Marry Your Friend by folake4u: 8:09pm On May 28, 2023 |
XAUBulls: Objection!
Ode is NOT a pleasant word to say to a man you are in a long-term relationship with depending on the tone of voice used by the female spouse and vice versa. It's rather insidious and can lead to a collapse of the marriage.
On the other hand, ode or the English translation called "fool/stupid" can be used in a jocular way though based on how you say it, and both of you can engage in a pillow fight and tickle each other as part of some pre-intimacy rituals, but this should not be overused because most men have a healthy ego. Lol Actually, I'm referring to your second paragraph. Her: Look at his big head. Come here Ode! Him: Who are you calling Ode? (Pillow fight and tickling each other follow). Mekwe starts. Curtains closed. The End. |

bukatyne: Also try Wheat bread with butter, lettuce and scrambled eggs.
Spread a thin slice of butter, lay the lettuce on and spread your scrambled eggs (fried with little olive oil, garlic, carrots and spring onions) and eat away. Thank you soooooo much for this. I'm definitely giving it a try.😋 |

It seems you just have a nack for discovering little food treasures. It already sounds delicious to me so much I want to try it.
Perhaps it's because I've not tried the bread with something really sweet. Like jam too. Mango, believe me, it's so delicious. The wheat bread has to be fresh one oh. I got tired of jam at a point in time sha. But I never got tired of peanut butter. Maybe I will get jam again. |

@bold: Very true. Lmao. You can talk oh. Feel free please. What did Gen Z do again? If you want to talk more, and not derail the thread, we can take it to the Pinkpill thread if you wish. Hahaha. It's true. Na we start that "Ode" tag. That word too sweet abeg.😂😂😂😂 |

It's called cream soda, but it's not as sweet as the other carbonated drinks.
When I am feeling mature and "I want to take charge of my life and start eating healthy" then I always like wheat bread.
But on a normal day, I'm sorry, lol. Oh okay. I'd look for it then. Hahahaha. I love wheat bread come rain or sunshine. Wheat bread and peanut butter is HEAVENLY! |

bukatyne: You are right, depends on how I see it.
I find it as an insult and interestingly, others around me think it same.
I have never had a friend, family member or husband call me such. Ditto same with me.
I guess it is popular with younger folks.
Don't even see anyone my age and above do such. Yes. Context matters A LOT. Well, you're the Millennials generation and it would look insulting for a spouse, friend or family member to call you such. Meanwhile, it is not so with my generation, the Gen Z. A lover, friend or family member can playfully call us "Ode" and it would be endearing. I searched the word "Ode" on my Whatsapp and it wasn't an insult in any of my convos. You can have a look. These are three different conversations. |

Some sugar-free biscuits really be slapping harder than those with it. Even stuff without sugar generally. Tea. Pap.
Even Sans and Teem. Lmao. Nor vex. Do you gettt!!!!! @ the bolded. I LOVE those sugar-free biscuits. Very very nice! I love love Teem Lemon and Schweppes. I was addicted to them when I was younger. What is Sans? I am not a fan of soda (coke, fanta). I hate them sha. The stuff with sugar generally wear me out. It leaves one funny bitter aftertaste in my mouth. Do you like wheat bread? |

Calling someone Ode is already provocative; if a 'fight' comes out of it, your luck. Uhm, depending on how you use it. Context matters. I don't know about you but I playfully call my lover/folks "Ode" and they don't see it insulting. |
