OvaSabi1: Not that they are asking me to pay school fees yet. The agent wants my bank statement and it must show that I have all the funds for deposit and POF. Me wey Dey find scholarship. So I will now use 60+ million to do 3 to 4 years of PhD. Because of what na? I can use that money to buy PR by investment in one Caribbean country. Oh I see. Hehe, I agree with you. As someone who has 'been there, done it', I always advise people never to use their own money to do a PhD, because PhD students essentially sla.ve for the Uni. So make the University pay for that damn PhD, hehe. |

Thanks I know someone who got theirs recently. If I remember correctly, it took 20 days before they received the grant. |

OvaSabi1: Na wa for these representatives oh. My PhD proposal has been approved by prospective supervisors and they’re asking me to proceed for EOI and scholarship application. IDP and MEL are asking me to get ready to pay school fees deposit and proof of funds before they do EOI for me. If I had these why would I be applying for a scholarship? If I had 25m why would I go to Australia? Visa grant when a scholarship is given would not require a tuition deposit or POF but these representatives are asking me for these. Na real wa! Pay school fees deposit when you don't even have an admission yet. I would like to think that there is a miscommunication somewhere. Could it be that your agent lacks experience when it comes to dealing with prospective PhD applicants. Also, I do not think any decent Uni should mandate prospective PhD students to use agent - I personally would dislike that. |

kennylicious: Hi DrCollins, please help, I am a recent Phd computer science holder and would love to apply but they are asking for a nominator. Please how do I go about it. Thanks Yes, you do need a nominator who is an Australian citizen, Aus PR or New Zealand citizen who is internationally recognized in your field. I have seen applicants on a different forum approach Australian Computer Society for nomination. You can look it up. There is a dedicated thread on expat forum [dot] com where you can read more about people's experience. I learnt a lot from that thread when I was working on my GTI application. |

What i will advise is that u reroute and pass through Malaysia because Singapore is closed to Turkey for now. For others yet to book ticket, if u can afford it try and book the airline with just 1 stop only Good point bro. To be honest, I would avoid any unnecessary stopover in this time of COVID. The safest option available, in my opinion, is Qatar airways with a stopover in Doha, Qatar. |

Lordfranklin: Good evening! Please I really need your help urgently. I've just been contacted by a friend who lives and works in Sydney, asking me to make enquiries on ways to get there via student visa. I'm completely clueless about the whole process. I just rounded off my first degree in statistics but I wish to start a fresh degree in Nursing. How do I go about the process? I'd really appreciate if I can get answers on how to go about the visa process from start to finish. Bro, you need to DYOR mehn, you have the internet! I roll my eyes whenever people ask "how do I go about the process" or something similar. You really expect a bunch of strangers to do the dirty work for you? Yes, I mean dirty work cos you will soon realize how hectic the process is i.e. from researching schools, to submitting applications/supporting documents, etc. I'm sure people (myself included) would be more willing to reply if you asked more specific questions.
I wish you nothing but good luck. |

Also I’ll be booking an Airbnb for 2 days awaiting my result before going to stay with a relative. Am I filling my Airbnb address or relatives address on the form.
Cheers. I put Qatar as my departure country even though I boarded the first leg in Nigeria. There was an instruction that says you should put the country where you boarded the particular flight that brought you to Australia.
The Airbnb address should work fine since you are no longer required to self-isolate for 72 hours (assuming you are coming to Vic or NSW). When I arrived 2 weeks ago, someone from the Dept. of Health came to my address. |

NB1912: Check with @FutureDon I believe he is specialized in research and PHD. He has been very helpful on this thread. You will have to be very patient as he is a very busy man haha Haha, busy man indeed. Sisi042, I would recommend clicking on my profile and checking out some of my previous replies. Some of those replies should be relevant to your case. I am not going to sugarcoat this, getting a full scholarship in Australia is hard as it is super competitive. However, it is VERY doable if one is really dedicated and ready to 'fight' for it. I would think that your first class should make it less hard also.

zeb04: Hi future don, I hope you see the message. I finally settled for a PhD in Public health with a focus in sexual and reproductive health at the university of Canterbury New Zealand.
I chose this because I have worked with women in infertility for 5 years now, and my Msc in in something similar.
I wanted my research to focus on African women however, I need advice. do you think this is a wrong move since I want to settle in new Zealand after my studies.
Also, do you think this will affect my job search after study? Should my research be about new Zealand?
Can i also contact you personally? Hi zeb04, congratulations on your Uni of Canterbury offer, well done! To answer your questions, focusing on African women while aspiring to settle down in NZ post-PhD is NOT a wrong move. However, I am concerned that it would be a bit of a struggle finding enough women of African origin to recruit for your research. Should that happen, you would be able to amend your research plan to include people from other races/ethnicity if necessary.
On whether it would have a negative impact post-PhD, I seriously doubt that and you should be fine. The quality of research that you will be doing is what matters most.
Sure, feel free to send me an e-mail request on here. |

zeb04: HI Futuredon,
I am considering going for my PhD in either Canada or Australia and to be fair Ireland too( however i heard funding is peanut). My only worry with Australia is the distance and the wildlife stuff(spiders, snakes and kangaroo)
Why would you prefer to do a PhD in Australia over any country? how many years was your PhD for and what was it in? Hello, sorry I was not keeping an eye on this thread. PhD funding in Australia is more generous and they won't overuse you as a PhD student. In the US (and Canada too), you would have to complete a Masters degree which include completing coursework as part of your PhD program. In Australia, you get to do full-time hardcore research, no coursework, no Masters degree, no bullsh**t. This was really appealing to me as I had already completed a MSc before commencing my PhD.
In my opinion, I also think that the quality of life as PhD student in Australia is better than that of US/Canada. You can still have a life and even do causal/PT jobs to make additional money. This is related to how US/Canadian Universities make their PhD students work really hard for the penny the University awarded to them. I interact with PhD students here in my lab in the US and I am really glad I did NOT complete my PhD here. Based on my familiarity with the academic environment in Canada and on my conversation with some PhD students over there, I do think that life as a PhD student in Canada is a lot better. You also have better chances at becoming a permanent resident post-PhD in Australia (Canada too) than the US. Those are the few ones I can think of right now. So my ranking would be Australia, Canada, and Ireland.
Haha, interestingly I did not see any of those weird animals/insects since I lived in a city, except Kangaroos though. They are cool, hehe. I finished my program in ~4years and it was in Neuroscience. |

bellong: For a start, I will say ask God for direction. It is what I do when faced with problem of choice.
Now to human understanding, I will pick Australia over the other two as GIS has a pathway to permanent residence particularly study of identifying solutions to wildfire problem. While Canada also has a good pathway to PR, Australia has other advantages like better weather, better pay, ease of settling compared to Canada and others. The advantage Canada may have over Australia from my position may be the closeness to the USA for those who have relatives in the USA.
Reason I asked the source of the scholarship is because if it is government sponsored, all the three countries expect you to return to Nigeria post study for at least one year. Seeing you have no such clog in the wheel, Australia is a good choice.
If you have experience in GIS, you can start your PR processing even before you start or complete your study.
Congratulations and all the best in your decision making. May heaven lead you.
Which state is the university in Australia? Congrats on bagging those juicy offers. I agree with bellong. I did my PhD in Australia and also familiar with the North American system as I currently work as an Academic in the US. I would do a PhD in Australia over and over again.
BTW, if anyone is considering the Australia Global Talent/Distinguished Visa and needs some guidance, please feel free to post your question here and I will be happy to reply. Please do your own research before posting questions to me. Please do not DM me unless it is super private. |

Loloantho: Pls anyone in UQ that can give me recommendation for accommodation suitable for a family of four Very urgent Which of the UQ campuses will you be attending? For obvious reasons, it is better to live in a suburb not far from your campus. I believe it would be hard to secure a place while you are still in Nigeria. Thus, I would suggest to look for a temporary accommodation (for a few days). You can then intensify your search for a place to stay long-term when you arrive. A good site to look for accommodation is realestate dot com dot au. |
