In fact someone posted this link on nairaland sometime ago http://nercng.org/index.php/document-library/func-startdown/50/
I think a time is coming when there won't be much difference (cost-wise) in running your gen and getting bills from PHCN (or whatever the name will be). Fixed rate is back at N500 for residential (R2) and will increase over ti well over N1000 in 2015. Same rate of rise can be seen on the main tariff (N/kWh). Unfortunately I couldn't read anywhere on the document where the minimum quality of service is stated for the providers to meet. The best I can get is a doc on consumer protection on the site that threatens to prosecute anyone PHCN staff requesting money from consumers.

amosy007: nahhh
competition will force price down as time goes on
Sorry to wake you up from the dream world. There will be no competition. The power industry is not like telecoms where the husband and wife are at liberty to choose any network. The way I see it work is that a region (say Lagos or abc L.G.A) will get a company serving it and everybody in that region will have no other choice (apart from I-pass-my-neighbor generators). You'll all be stuck with the provider - good or bad; most likely rip-off tariffs without service improvement. Except if the complain is so much that the regulatory authority (which will be a toothless bulldog) steps in.

In essence what we will end up with is multiple NEPA/PHCN monopoly scattered throughout the federation.

I have always known they will sell to themselves or pawns acting for them. No surprises.

So should she die because some drunk idiots are about, or should she be sacrificed because she saw ORO.

BetaThings: 1. You need to read the story
2. The Cultists (not the Muslims) planned to restrict movement
3. Muslims told the government that it would affect them negatively during Ramadan.
4. The government called a meeting and asked people to confine their activities to their own part of town
5. The cultists breached that agreement and attacked muslims

Yet you have not said anything against the people who broke the agreement

Is this the truth that will set us free?

And would christians really stay at home during Easter/Christmas for the Cultists

Violence like kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, pipeline vandalisation? piracy
Like the Ife/Modakeke war, Umuleri/Aguleri battles, Tiv/Jukun Crisis?

A rocket from an overflying Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jet unexpectedly went off yesterday in Port Harcourt and destroyed a residential building and a Nissan Primera 2.0 SLX salon car.

Finally, a report that make sense. I just don't bliv a jet (or helicopter) under maintenance will carry fire arms and if it did for any reason, the rocket should have destroyed the hanger because it should be "parked" in a hanger if its truly under maintenance as opposed to taking off from the NAF base, flying over 3km and hitting a building. It just didn't add up.

Jarus:
My own view: while religious fundamentalism by a few extremists cannot be wished away as a root cause, the rising poverty in the region fueled it by providing, for free, an army of illiterate, vulnerable, easily brainwashable youth for the violence. You can't fault that!
Has anybody also noticed this similarity: The poverty in the Niger Delta led to militancy. Their own poverty was not as a result of small federal allocation but just pure corruption and greed. That is why I don't totally agree with SLS that just pumpin more money to any region will miraculously eliminate violence.

Of course the foolishness will not allow them to cry out loud with the same vigour. Anything SLS/North/muslim/islam just keep eating them up no matter how reasonable/factual the stand is. Even though corruption (IMO) is the number one killer in this country, it appears to them that is a "lesser" crime so they'll keep mute especially because its GEJ - who according to them is just a victim.

Having said that, I think SLS just rubbed crude oil on his body for his enemies to roast him. I have not read/heard anywhere where he explained his action (For all we know it might have been his personal money) but you can't blame people for complaining if he didn't do the same for bomb blast victims in other states.
PoliticsRe: Poverty Fueling Religious Violence/Tension At Nation - Bill Clinton by gists: 10:45am On Feb 14, 2012
Demdem:
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton warned Monday that the rampant poverty that plagues oil-rich Nigeria — felt most acutely in its Muslim north — is fueling the religious violence now tearing at the nation.

A radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram claimed Monday it killed 12 soldiers and beheaded three government informants in its bloody wave of sectarian violence against Nigeria’s weak central government. While Clinton never named the sect in a speech Monday night in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos, he admitted he remained “really worried” about the security challenges in Africa’s most populous nation.

“You can’t just have this level of inequality persist. That’s what’s fueling all this stuff,” said Clinton, who appeared along with Cherie Blair, the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, at the ThisDay Awards, an annual ceremony hosted by Nigerian newspaper magnate Nduka Obaigbena.

Poverty is endemic in Nigeria, and corruption has siphoned away billions in oil earnings since the country began exporting crude more than 50 years ago. New government statistics released Monday showed that in Nigeria’s northwest and northeast, regions besieged by Islamic insurgents, about 75 percent of the people live in poverty.

Analysts say that poverty, despite decades of military rule by leaders from the north, coupled with a lack of formal education has driven the region’s exploding youth population toward extremism.

In the last year, Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege” in the local Hausa language, has carried out increasingly sophisticated attacks in its campaign to implement strict Islamic law and avenge Muslim killings in Nigeria.

Boko Haram is blamed for killing at least 286 people so far this year, according to an Associated Press count. At least 185 people died in the sect’s coordinated assault in January on Kano, the largest city of Nigeria’s north.

Those attacks have strained relations between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. Clinton called for Nigerians to embrace their similarities, while also asking the government to speed public works projects such as providing electricity to a nation whose people are long accustomed to running their own generators for power.

“It is almost impossible to cure a problem based on violence with” violence, Clinton said. “You also have to give people something to look forward to when they get up in the morning.”

However, Clinton acknowledged Nigeria cannot rule out using military or police force when dealing with the instability. The unease in the country, as well as the threat of possible Boko Haram violence even in Lagos, could be felt as heavily armed soldiers and officers stood guard outside the luxury hotel as he spoke Monday night.

If this had come from a Nigerian, especially SLS, then he will be tagged religious/ethnic bigots. I wonder when we will start asking the gov the right questions of actually delivering dividends as against constituting, planning bla bla bla. Corruption is the number one killer in this country. It is obvious that no economic transformation can materialise where corruption reigns. No amount of SURE or SURE-P can save Nigeria without first getting rid of corruption.

PoliticsRe: How Will Posterity Judge Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (sls) by gists: 8:55am On Jan 31, 2012
SirVee:
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (SLS) became CBN governor sometimes mid 2009 and he came heavy a few months later on the banking industry telling the whole world how bad our banks were.
The Nigerian Banks had been prunned from about 89 to 25 in number in the consolidation programme by his immediate predecessor - Chukwuma Soludo.

Immediately Sanusi resumed, he claimed he wants to re-structure the banks, hence the Nigerian economy.

1. He told us the banks were very weak
2. He sacked the MD and ED of some of the banks
3. He appointed 'successors' to the very bad directors of the bad banks.
4. He bailed out the banks with very huge amounts of Nigerian tax payers money
5. He established AMCON and started buying 'debts' of the failed banks
6. He shifted dates at will and liquidated three of the bad banks

But three years later, where are we? Has our economy improved? Is there any hope in the near future that the economy will improve?
Is Sanusi the best Nigeria has to be the boss of the Apex bank? Don't we have 'gentlemen' who are can perform better? Don't we have men and women who do not raise alarm taht causes more harm than good to the Nigerian economy.

What has happened to the stock market under SLS?
1. SLS has caused confidence to be lost in the market. How? he has said the stock market is a place for 'gamblers'
2. Sanusi has defended the naira to the detriment of the Nigerian economy (?)
3. Sanusi has increased interest rates to an unreasonabl ehigh level to defend his unsustainable policy, and this has stiffled growth and investment. Businesses have not grown as banks do not lend, and even when they do, the rates have sky rocketed!
4. The return from the stock market have been poor since Sanusi assumed the mantle of leadership of the Apex bank. This invariably implies that bussinesses and the economy has been statis under SLS

FUEL SUBSIDY?
Sanusi supported this subsidy with his blood, telling Nigerians that the proposed 141 naira / litre was it for the economy and nothing else! But when the masses reacted, Sanusis quickly started singing a new tune of dialogue.

Sanusi's Religious and Ethnic bias
SLS has a masters in Islamic Studies from a University in Sudan! Can he be unbiased?
He tried to introduce Islamic Banking to the Nigerian State where there is a strong ethnic and religious divide. Thank goodness this was foiled. Who knows what would have happened if this policy had succeeded withthe new menace of Boko Haram
His recent comment that BH started as a result of poor oil derivation to the North Eastern states with some funny statistics on population et al. soundsed funny, biased and pale! Has Sanusi been to the Delta? Does he know the level of poverty and degradation here?
Is this his statement in support of the wanton (no basis) destruction wrecked on the Nigerian nation by Boko Haram? Boko Haram is recently asking for the whole Nigerian state to be ruled under the Islamic Sharia law? Isn't this funny and pale (I learnt the use of the word 'pale' from SLS)

Who is Sanusi? What is his drive and direction for the Nigerian economy / State?
Can Sanusi be unmasked?
Is he the best that this nation can have as the CBN governor? Has his result favoured the average Nigerian - where so many have lost jobs in the banking sector and alot of businesses have stiffled for shortage of funds?
See Nigerians, What will you rather have him do? I guess you prefer the false sense of health in the Banks abi until you wake up one day and discover that the banks are no more. I know its not palatable to those that lost there jobs, but as far as I am concerned, its a MUCH BETTER scarifice to make as opposed to waking up one day and millions of Nigerians lose there life saving in those banks. The question you should ask yourself is those bank MDs that were sacked, was any of them innocent of the offense they were charged with?

NSE!! wow a bunch of quoted companies with  cooked figures. Just look at the companies whose share prices were affected. They are largely the banks and insurance companies - those that don't really have tangible products to sell. The likes of Nestle, PZ and co were relatively less affected. Next time when a bank says it makes N500tr profit after tax, you will know better to run away. The fact is they were cooked figures and Nigerians fell for it. Besides Sanusi is not in NSE. So if his policy in the banking industry can bring down the stock prices in virtually all sectors of the exchange, it goes to show how strong the exchange really is.

FUEL subsidy: I strongly oppose the removal of fuel subsidy. But I must confess that you'll find it tough to dispute sanusi's facts. All his arguments were solid. The problem he has is that he is a technocrat and as such he is focused on the numbers. The fact is that the numbers just does not make economic sense. But he forgets to look the social implication of removing the subsidy. I am against the removal of subsidy, even though I agree with his arguments. My stand is let the gov. provide electricity, make refineries work, then come back and ask us to pay more on fuel so they can buld road, hospital etc. To collect the money in advance in anticipation of providing this infrastructure is just plain scam.

These are my opinions, I may be wrong from your paspective, but I am entitled to it.

President Yayi Boni Of Benin Republic "Defeats" Nigeria's Jonathan To Become AU Chairman
Posted: January 29, 2012 - 15:29

By SaharaReporters, New York

The President of Benin republic, Yayi Boni, has been elected as the chairman of the African Union (AU) after a group of West African nations led by Ghana opposed the candidature of Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan.

Boni will be taking over the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) from Equatorial Guinea's dictator Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

Mr. Jonathan had injected himself into the contest as a last minute attempt to become the chair of AU but his effort was stoutly opposed by Ghana leading several West African nations that claimed Mr. Boni's nomination was already agreed upon at a mini-summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

It was not clear if Mr. Jonathan withdrew his candidature after ECOWAS member states blocked his bid to become the AU chair. However, Mr. Boni was announced as the new chair of the African Union and takes over as Chairman at the 18th AU Summit in Addis Ababa today.

And then what? What have we gained. All our sons and daughters working in such coys will suddenly become jobless. I've said it b4 and I'll say it again KEEP WALLOWING IN YOUR FOOLISHNESS

Just remember the US budget for defense alone is far much more than the entire Nigerian budget. Talking about resource:spending ratio. The US can conveniently afford 30 for her 1st lady and another 30 aids per senator without excessive negative impact in their economy while having two legistlative houses alone is proving to be so much of a financial burden to this country. I'm not concerned about the tradition in the US. I'm looking at their expenses vis-a-vis the resources available to them; comparing that with Nigeria is just silly to say the least.

WOW, this is sad. O.k compare now. Can US afford 50 aids? In my opinion maybe yes. I really don't know. But we know the U.S gov is not over blotted. Can Nigeria afford 24 aids for the president. Yes definitely, just that they have to keep scamming/ripping us off to pay them. Just like we just experienced with subsidy issue. I have even heard of subsidy removal from electricity. I don't know if this is true, I hear say Chicago alone would have been the third richest in the world if it was a country on its own. Keep on comparing and it should not be hard to see the wastage in this country.

I have been a fan of sanusi all along, but I must confess he disappoints me on this one. He would rather have the north have a more balanced spread of the allocation with the people of ogoni and co whose water is undrinkable, fishing activities destroyed etc because of the activities of ioc. I don't agree with him on this one.
