African Americans comprise more than 70% of COVID-19 deaths in Chicago, officials say

More than half of the people in Chicago who have contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, and over 70% of those who have died are African Americans, health officials and Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Monday. African Americans make up 30% of the city's population, according to the city's data.

According to data shared by the city on Sunday, 98 people have died from COVID-19 in Chicago. Of those 98 deaths, 67 were African American.

"Fifty-two percent of our cases have been in black Chicagoans, and, most strikingly, 72% of our deaths here in Chicago," Chicago Public Health Department Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady, said Monday.


In addition, there has been significant under reporting within the Latinx community, CBS Chicago points out. Lightfoot noted that some of the city's more culturally tight-knit communities may be experiencing higher incidents of COVID-19.

The cure for Covid-19 has taken another turn because of those insisting on hydo chloroquine as THE cure. Many old drugs including one used for TB is being worked on.

Well, when we are desperate, no matter how well informed or educated we are, we try many things as last resort.

Dr. Navarro an economist got tangled with Dr. Fauci, an epidemiologist on chloroquine treatment for Covid-19.

In medicine or scientific research, there is something called patient selection for every study or research which Dr. Navarro may not be aware of.

Moreover, many patients react differently to the same medication. As attractive and promising as chloroquine for Covid-19 treatment is, adverse reaction, shortage and misuse like those using it for prevention can cause more damage than good.

For example, those using chloroquine for prevention actually believe in it's efficacy. Africans are not the only people that have ignoramus within.

The first and most important defense against disease is food.

What we learned from Ebola is that you cannot cage people in isolation, starve them and expect them to die without fighting back.

We learned that in Liberia and Sierra Leone where patients broke out by fighting their way out. This was what put both local and foreign health care workers at risk. Those that escaped the anger of hungry patients were lucky.

Nigeria and Ghana had to fly emergency food supplies to those two countries. This abject neglect should not happen in Nigeria.
