short term solution but i say they process this food surplus and package them.Call the Chinese and you can get cheap machinery to dry and process this items instantly. For the Long term i suggest building of processing plants and packaging plants. Also i suppose we send them to chad and Niger if its not needed in Nigeria.Atleast they could use extra food for oil. undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

First Republic Minister of Information and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, speaks with SYLVESTER IDOWU recently on sundry issues, including 2015 presidency and the probability of President Goodluck Jonathan seeking another four-year tenure. Excerpts:

[Clark]

Clark
Do you support the call for a Sovereign National Conference(SNC) now?
No, I don’t. People do not know the meaning of SNC. What most of us have agreed to is, let us have a national conference where all Nigerians from the various ethnic nationalities can discuss the basis of our living together. It is only those who want to break up the country that talk about SNC.

Will a national conference not be a waste of time and resources if it is not sovereign, in view of the fact that similar conferences convoked by previous administrations did not achieve any result?
It will not be a waste of time. When we have a national conference, the mere fact that we sit together to discuss the problem of this country as it affects everybody is a step forward. Why should a man from the North talk about 13 per cent derivation? The constitution says the minimum of 13 per cent. It has not been increased. The 2005 national conference in Abuja recommended that it should be increased to 18 per cent. We wanted 25 or 50 per cent. So, the North should look inward, collect taxes from their people and develop their areas. Agriculture is their mainstay; they should develop it. We depend on them agriculturally. So, as far as I am concerned, they have no case, but if they want to resume the issue of offshore/onshore, the issue of derivation, let us go to the national conference and discuss it.

What is your reaction to the call by the North for a review of the revenue formula?
That is why we are calling for a national conference.

You were involved in the various consultations, which led to the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2011 election. Was a commitment ever extracted from Jonathan, especially by the Northern political leaders, that he would not seek a second term?
There was no time he gave such commitment. Let us make it very clear, this country belongs to all of us. Who is qualified to become the president of the country? Anybody who has no defect has the right to be the president. It is not an exclusive right of certain people.

Nigerians, for the first time, unanimously voted for President Jonathan. This was the first time Nigerians rose above religious, ethnic and political divides and voted for a president. They expect so much from him and he knows that. So, the issue of whether he would run in 2015 or not has not arisen. The man has three more years to go for him to decide whether he wants to contest for second term or not.

And he has advised his ministers and other functionaries that nobody should talk about the politics of 2015. Some of the Northerners, who are making these statements, are just being vicious. They want to create problems for Jonathan, as some of them had threatened to make this country ungovernable for him. So, this is part of it. Jonathan has not told anybody that he is going to contest in 2015.

But he has said that he has a right to contest, are you not aware of that?
Yes, he has the right to contest. If former President Olusegun Obasanjo did eight years and governors are doing eight years and former President Shehu Shagari was going to do eight years, what prevents him from doing eight years if he wants? But if he does not want to, that is his own decision, but he has no reason to give commitment to any group of persons or any person in this country. He has the rights every other Nigerian has. None of them gave commitment to anybody. Obasanjo did not give such commitment, though in 2003, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, his deputy, wanted to take over from him. At that time, they did not care whether Obasanjo had a second term.

Nobody will do this to Jonathan.

Let us see what Jonathan can do for the people of this country in the next three years. He is obligated to do that because they voted for him and they expect so much from him. His transformation agenda should be completed, and he should not talk about second term until towards the end of his first term.

Are you convinced that he is delivering on the mandate given to him?
He is performing.

How do you mean? Are you not aware of the problem, for instance, in the power sector?
Which power sector? There are saboteurs. He has been trying. There was a certain time that power generation rose to 4,000 megawatts, but due to the fall in water level and lack of gas, the figure dropped. This thing happens everywhere in the world, but the power sector is a priority to his government. But there is a conspiracy against him. All the things that were never done by Obasanjo and other people are now on his shoulders. And he has only been in office for about one year.

Is it not, two years…
Not two years. Not at all!

What about the one year he got after the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua?
The one year he got when they harassed him and intimidated him that he had no right to become the president of this country! How many people would be free enough to do something for their country under that circumstance? This is the first time he has been elected.

By 29 May, 2012, he will be one year in office. And if he fails, that is his own business. God has put him there, you have voted for him, have an open mind, give him a chance. When you harass him, he cannot perform. He is a human being.

But Boko Haram said they are going to run him out of government in the next three months. Are you bothered?
Boko Haram is not against Jonathan. We are not afraid. How can we be bothered? Bothered about what and whom? I don’t want to comment on that. As far as I am concerned, it is irrelevant. Boko Haram members are fighting their own people, who neglected them, who have not given them anything. They had no schools, no medicare for them. The Boko Haram members know their enemies.

Jonathan is not their enemy.

Is it not the duty of the government to protect lives and property, and punish criminals?
The government is doing everything possible to contain Boko Haram. One is not happy about the number of Boko Haram leaders that have been arrested as well as the number of its members killed as they are also Nigerians. So, we will find a way to ensure that this thing stops. What do you want the president to do? Do you want him to go to Maiduguri in Borno State and stop them? He is doing everything possible to contain them and he will contain them. The leaders of Boko Haram should come out. You can’t negotiate with faceless people.

When Yar’Adua decided to negotiate with the Niger Delta militants, they came to him, they saw him and he fraternised with them. Boko Haram leaders should come out. I am very sure the president will negotiate with them.

Do you subscribe to the views in certain quarters that Boko Haram was an invention by the North to truncate the second term aspiration of President Jonathan?
A few of the Northerners may do that, but majority of them would not contemplate it. Have you read the interview given by Senator Kanti Bello? He mentioned people like Atiku, who are professional presidential candidates. He said Atiku had no principle, but had an ambition to become the president. He is jumping from one party to another. Those are the people who believe that unless they are ruling, nobody should rule. The same Atiku, in 2003, wanted to take over power from Obasanjo, who was his boss. In 2007, he left PDP to contest for the presidency on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Today, he is back in PDP and wants to push Jonathan out. He will never succeed. Kaita is one of the people canvassing for Atiku, feeling that unless Atiku becomes president, there will be no peace in the country. And if it is found that they are actually doing it, the government should be bold enough to arrest them.

Nobody is above arrest. We need peace and stability in this country, and no individual should create problem for the government.

Aka PDP like Azazi mentioned and a whole lot PDP gurus and grand leader GEJ.Why always bring the north in.Na GEJ personal person without doubt.NA GEJ stooge.SO how come the north takes the blame? For his comment about PDP and governance of a nation they ruined angry angry angry angry
That reminds when ever did GEj or sambo visit Borno to see the level of carnage or boost troop moral in the state.I mean even Obama and Bush dey enter Iraq and Afghanistan once in a while to check what is happening in a foreign land that is not USA.Since they have interest in the nations and have troops there. Not to talk of your own domain and place of control. If Obj made it there and back, how come the president of Nigeria will not be able to visit and come back quietly.
Politics › Re: Buhari's Comments Being Probed Live On AIT by hakanai(m): 2:41pm On May 18, 2012
The concept of this whole dog and monkey bloody thing in Hausa for the little i know is derived from the Hunters who during hunting expeditions notice the fierce resistance of the monkey to the hunting dog.In most cases this Dogs would try there best to subdue the Monkey but usually are met in equal force.Meaning the bloody nature of that struggle between the supposedly prey and the supposedly predator is fierce and long.At the end it's believed that but turn up bloody and the dog later realizes the monkey is not an easy prey.So decides to give up or walk away.
While taking that scenario the Hausa will tell you "Kare jini and biri jini" to mean the struggle or tussle will be fierce and not necessarily violent as this people want the blood to mean.It simply puts the point clear that i will not be an easy prey and we will match you equally. The blood doesn't necessarily mean drawing blood as you want it to look. It's more of saying we won't give up easily,we are not an easy push over,We are equal to the task,we will resist you,it's a fierce struggle etc
I really think if that is all he said then someone is really desperate to destroy his person. What he said is a figure of speech in Hausa. It doesn't literally mean that monkey and dog will fight or that blood will be spilled.Lastly if you take his words then are you dogs or monkey? If no, then why assume it's you.If on the other hand you take monkey and dog to mean men of opposing camps, then it is only fair to know that blood in that case does not also translate into killings or bloodletting. undecided undecided undecided undecided

^^^^ i always pray that the government has not ignore strategy and mobilized a enough offensive military units and arsenal to invade chad and Niger.Positioned in the NE of this country. Not to invade chad or Niger but to serve as deterrent on so many fronts eg. Before rogue groups like the taureg people of Niger will act part 2 of Mali in this country o!Lastly it must be clear that if you hit.you won't last a day.Because this one boko-haram as they take hijack Kano for almost a day, repeat same for Yobe,Borno,Bauchi etc. It is possible they are testing the waters. The day they decide to launch an offensive on multiple fronts.Occupying several states, with there suicidal tendencies it may be a awhile to dislodge them.Talk of causalities. So i say keep a strong response armed force.Add rapid to that. Thats why all new peace keeping quest should be set aside until that is resolved.

Nigeria reveals Algerian groups fund 'new' Boko Haram

(AGI) Abujia - Nigerian intelligence sources have revealed to the online newspaper Premium Times that Algerian terrorist groups also fund the 'new' Boko Haram. The report, a product of a joint police and military investigations and raids, carried out in Kano and Sokoto in December 2011, indicates that the Algerian sect gave out the funds as its first installment in a planned long term partnership with Boko Haram providing 200,000 euros in financing. The Boko Haram sect and the unnamed Algerian terrorist group have met a number of times in their bid to hammer out modalities for a long term partnership. The document quoted some arrested members of the sect as having made the confession. The partnership would see the richer, more influential, and more organized Algerian terror gang mentor members of the Boko Haram through trainings in activities that will help it fortify its financial base locally. The article states that the Algerian sect is also expected to train the Boko Haram insurgents in hostage taking and weapon handling.
The report provides an insight into how the dreaded Nigerian sect has been funding its activities. The sect members have been fingered for a string of bank robberies, and there is also deep suspicion that they receive discreet support from local politicians. But it has never been this established that the group receives donations from overseas. The partnership would see the richer, more influential, and more organized Algerian terror gang mentor members of the Boko Haram through trainings in activities that will help it fortify its financial base locally. . .

A Leader of Hausa Community in Abia, Alhaji Mohammed Umaru has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to jettison plans to dialogue with the Boko Haram group.

Umaru, who is the Public Relations Officer of Northern Community in Abia, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Sunday.

He said that dialoguing with the group would be counter-productive as it would explore the opportunity to re-organise and cause more havoc.

“Islamic religion does not preach the killing of human beings, anybody who kills in the name of Islam is not a true Muslim. In Islam, Allah tells us not to kill anybody and anybody who kills his fellow human being be it a Christian or Muslim, will go to hell fire straight,’’ he said.

He said that members of the Boko Haram were aware that God condemns their activities in Nigeria.

He added that unlike the Niger Delta militants, the group did not have genuine reason that would warrant government’s attention.

“The Niger Delta militants’ agitation was because of unfair treatment to the oil producing communities. The Federal Government asked them to drop arms, and then looked into their requests which led to the creation of Niger Delta Ministry, among other things. For the Boko Haram, they do not want to take advantage of the media to tell the world what their problems are, rather they continue to kill Christians and Muslims, they kill Igbos, Yorubas, and Hausas so their motive is evil,’’ he said.

Umaru, who was the former Special Adviser to Abia Governor on Cattle Matters, appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to break his silence on the incessant killings and destruction of lives and properties of Nigerians and tackle the matter head-on.

“At a time, government said they knew those sponsoring the Boko Haram group. If Mr President knows any person fingered as sponsor of the group, Dr Jonathan should muster the courage to deal with such evil person. It is not good for Mr President to be afraid of anybody, but God almighty,’’ he said.

Recalling the era when kidnapping was rampant in Abia, Umaru said that Abia Governor took the bull by the horn and flushed out the criminal elements and urged the Federal Government to take such step.

He also advised governors in Nigeria, especially those in the North to always utilise their security votes for the purpose it was meant to tackle the rising wave of insecurity.

“In international peace keeping, Nigeria police, the military and the State Security Service are rated among the best in the world, but at home they cannot perform because of poor funding. If governors should spend 80 per cent of their security votes judiciously, we all will be sleeping with our eyes closed in Nigeria,’’ he said.

Umaru said that members of Hausa community in Abia were monitoring the infiltration of strangers within their domain with the intention of alerting the security if any suspicious character was noticed.

For me the request on states shows you basically the level of division/marginalization in the Nigerian state. The more the request, the more it strikes you to know some minority is not particularly happy about the power players in his state. Also the more the state request, the more problems looming unattended too.In most cases this is applicable. undecided undecided undecided undecided

^^^I tend to agree with this notion atleast we all know that it remains a thorny issue and we never ripe reach that level yet.It may have happened before but very unlikely now due to sentiments and apprehensions. So it's not workable. The CPC and ACN joint candidate initial confab didn't go well partly because in the start Buhari was to be paired with Tinubu and Buhari suggested it will only play in to the hands of PDP.Who will further suggest a hidden motive. As such asked ACN to come up with a Christian alternative. This is what Bafarwa then in ACN said caused the initial collapse of the agreement for the place of vice. When Bakare was taken for vice later on ACN now came suggesting it will give another candidate and Bakare will then step down later on.
