2015: CPC denies endorsing El-Rufai

LAGOS — The Congress for Progressive Change, CPC has denied speculations of the endorsement of erstwhile Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai as the party’s candidate in the 2015 presidential election.

The party in a statement, yesterday, said the speculations were being fuelled by elements in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who were bent on derailing ongoing merger talks by opposition parties in the country.

The party in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashikin, followed media reports that El-Rufai was being proposed as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2015 election.

The insinuation is upon uncertainties that the party’s national leader and 2011 presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari would not make himself available for the 2015 election.

The CPC’ statement read: “We are aware that the piece of misinformation had its roots in PDP, with its large array of paid agents and proxies to castigate notable CPC members ahead of 2015 elections.

“It is quite asinine to insinuate that a party, in possible merger talks with other coalition partners, will have a candidate already anointed for the presidential election. Furthermore, being a political party with deeply entrenched democratic values, we believe our preferred candidate shall emerge from transparent electoral process and not from selection by anointment.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that the party leadership has not made any decision on its preferred candidacy for the 2015 elections. It is vitally important to use this forum to disabuse the minds of our members and teeming supporters from the noxious effect of that publication.

“For the umpteenth time, we restate our avowed commitment to our charted course and no amount of sponsored innuendos and deliberate mendacity can derail our set objectives.”

torkaka: nobody tricked anyone! the biafra war wasn't a war between biafra and hausa people,it was a war between biafra and nigeria! it wasn't a question of angas man are you going to fight?,?yoruba man are you going to fight? or tiv man are you going to fight? all were enlisted as nigerians in the nigerian army! name a tribe outside biafra that didn't take part in the fight against biafra!
Thank you for knocking some sense into the deeply blinded. Before i forget who were the commanders of the war?Who was conscripted and who were excluded? Even T.Y Danjuma doesn't share this same crap this so called group suggest. He said all took part and it is a lie that any group that took part is fooled into it.What i see here is the fact some people will go to any length for oyel money and relevance.Being fooled into a war and dying which one scares you? Also this is a youth group speaking on behalf of there elders.I dey laugh.cheap excuse.I have met alot of MB elders who fought in the war and they don't share that idea/rarely give a hoot about what transpired. All they remember was several encounters with Igbo biafran armies. They also feel they did there bid for Nigeria against the Igbo arrogance and campaign to break away.So they know the reasons.which is the same universally in Nigeria.remind me then how did they fool them?
If anything, i would agree to issues of motivating people on to the battle field. They need reasons.Reasons could have come from any quater MD/core north/others etc.Depending on the commander and not army.Don't forget when it happened the Igbos had significant presence in the top echelon of the army.Don't forget also the MB had same and the yorubas.SO explain to me where the mind game and wayo came from.Imaginary stories shall never end.I guess the Igbos told there people to give roses out to the Nigerian Military and the forcefull conscription of the ND people and use of other people eg binis as resource centres or expendable units in battle was angelic.Foolish people.

Beaf: Rhino is the one who is biching because he cannot acknowledge the fact that Lagos would need to negotiate to remain buoyant.
About the North, sadly you are mistaken. They are not ready to go anywhere and sentiment alone does not build nations, you've got to be pragmatic as well.
Where will your borders be? Who will go with you? There are quite a few unanswered fundamental questions.
The only positive I can take from the core-Northern position is that it make a national conference easier to accomplish. However, the talk of separation just might be negotiating tactics (just asking like for equal oil revenues) to set the bar so high that the status quo is maintained.
While you make the issue of borders paramount,I can say sometimes when the challenge surface then some issues we take for Granted becomes priority. As such that will call for give and take.It will call for reconciliation and terms of understanding.Agreements and issues will be discussed and solutions through the inevitable reached.Backlash and more likely conflict(hopefully i hope it doesn't).That said no condition like i said is permanent.Change will come.
@ the bolded i laugh.sooner then later you will know just how wrong you are about the SS/SE term of "everything is about oyel" notion. The average Northern fellow on the street now knows that the money remains at the top and is only enjoyed by the very few elites in the north and other areas of Nigeria. So more than you can imagine. The Northern people are tired and any small flare or situation ignites issues.I personally have spoken to people and also advocate to my fellow Northerners about this Oyel issue. There response hardly suggest your view. They are fed up and believe as much as oyel cna be purchased down south,it could be done up North beyond our Northern borders. They also believe the same elite that ensures the GEJ and PDP government do and undo are those who since like forever enjoy oil wealth and contract.In-short the people who need to brace up for the split are the corrupt elites. If i have any fear is that they don't succeed in Running the affairs of any new nation.
People farm, trade, employ and work hard up North. What they lack is direction, sophistication and visionary action packed leaders.Above all security. When the Northern masses went for Buhari is with the hope he can undo the grip of the Northern elite on people. He is the only person with the influence and yet hardly romance with the elite. They also are tired of the rhetoric of the southern people all the time. The treats and all that.Today the views of this elders is a view of so many in the North.Forget the silence. The people maybe silent.

C'mon guyZ!Beaf and Rhino, you guyz need to stop the bashing its giving me a headache!!!! grin grin grin grin grin
That said, the issue remains the North is most willing and ready, don't dismiss there position with a thinking that a few people are venting there position. The larger percentage has had it up to here with the constant insults and useless perception/demonization of the North by the south and want to be free from all that hating and insults so much. That we are better off taking our chances, regardless of the uncertainty people fear.Ours is not the worst in the world and also does not mean an end for us.Like i said it is only when the over dependence on oyel money is gone before other potentials can be fully harness. The separation will just serve the purpose right.Destroy the bridge of retreat and make sure we conquer our challenges within. respectable allies.
I see prospects and this are left untouched simply cos we have silly leaders. We must build an economy and a society. So fro me no condition is permanent. Also i believe that in life, the only constant thing is change. We must set our fears and doubts aside and start the process of appreciating what we all have and decide how to part if possible.Personally i don't give a damn about Nigeria Unity any longer as much as i do the Nigerian elites from every corner of the nation leeching on her to death. We all have heard enough of the bullshit and enmity talk.We have also listened and see people talk about there resolve if given the chance to destroy us.SO why pretend. Its not today we woke up to the fact that internal security is the greatest security risk we suffer from.SO i stand with this Northern elders and wish we could have a SNC and hopefully split.

If he was confident of the job he has been doing in government he should have stayed in Nigeria to receive the treatment we all receive rather than go abroad. There is NO SINGLE WORLD CLASS HOSPITAL IN NIGERIA good enough for them but they expect us to keep using it while they use our money to receive better treatment abroad. That is wicked
^^^Regardless in a situation of death and health,i am not going to wish anyone bad.It is ethical to wish them health as this could even be an experience that God could reach out to them and change there ways.So when who ever falls sick lets wish him well and in death lets wish them a resting place. We are all not perfect and illness/death shall visit us once sometime.About the deplorable state of health care.Lets come out and ask for an improvement or change of the situation. Not necessarily through wishing bad for a sick senate president. The senate is still there and the executives are still there. So we could approach them with our issues and mount pressure on them.

afam4eva: But you have to agree that these were reprisals attacks.
Not totally i doubt. An instance also in Enugu as a result of a gambling dispute had turned violent.Simply because the fight was between a Hausa/Igbo gambler again. The Igbos were on the match not minding the fact that this is a game between two grown people.Even where it is criminal. Before you know it,The Igbos were shouting how can a Hausa man come and probably have a fight with his Igbo gambling friend.Again in this instance the Hausa community was targeted.
Also on a separate account My friend also told me while in Anambra at a park.He was about to observe his salat when an Igbo man violently shoved him and denied him praying.Reason he gave him is you can't pray here on our land.Remind me if that is reprisals.
Lastly my response was not over who started or reprisals,But largely of the notion that nothing happened to the Hausa/Muslim communities in the south-east.That is a lie.

Beaf: That was before ACN's politics of ethnicity.
Suddenly, every ND person has become a drunken fisherman, because Tinubu said so; before Tinubu said it, ND people were not referred to in that way.

Maybe now that SSS is crawling around Aregbe's bedroom, ACN will be too busy hiding incriminating evidence in Osun to spew more ethnic bigotry.

I will hold any non-ACN hand.
^^^ See who is talking. You come here singing and stinking of a religious and ethnic bias.yet you suggesting another.Beaf you are gradually turning into something more of an instigator and manipulator. For political and tribal ends. Why should a nation embark on bloodletting.I hope this is not another of the cronies build up towards 2015.Unite the South and bully the North with treats and war.perhaps when is done go back to the normal,"he is Ijaw and can do anything na us get oyel","Yorubas are cowards/traitors","The north is a parasite","An anti-people policy is good since the oyel is ours and the leadership is Ijaw" etc.Why be destructive/divisive when you can be constructive?
Anyway if violence is what you prefer and you want a coalition that will help you destroy the North, then God help us and we wait to see how it ends.I guess you are deceptive.Because i remember having a chat with you and you said the issue had to do with the elites of all region particularly the North. Now you have alot of elite from the Ijaw and ND who are criminals and have hardly made anything come true for you ND masses. You choose to defend them always and still want others to go against people. You must know that it is about the gains you offer the suffering masses in all corners of Nigeria that will last as legacy and not the intimidation and divisive agenda you choose to use.Its how you make your bed that you will sleep in.You will set this precedence and later complain GEJ is having a hard time curbing insecurity and meeting developmental goals.
I leave you to your agenda which stinks of evil and ethnic/religious bigotry.

Slizbeat: true talk. Nt every1 4rm d north is hausa bt d fact is dat southernerz dnt kill pple lyk goats nd chicken. Durin tym of crisis, i was in kano nd saw a lot of killings, in 1996, in 2004, nd in 2010. Wn i left 4 d south, it was as if there were no crisis cos d hausas there were untouched bt in d north, d southernerz died lyk goats.
I think that is blatant lie.During the sharia crisis of Kaduna,i for one can tell you that i was in Enugu and i saw with my eyes the implication of that.Even where the media failed to highlight the seriousness of the issue in the SE.Let me tell you,Enugu is relatively peacefull compared to Anambra,Abia and Imo.In Enugu i saw an old Hausaman lynched to death around Onu Asata which is closer to the artisan area, where the Hausa community is largely based .When i got back from school that day.The whole place seemed tense. The Normal Hausa suya spots and sweet, cigarette sales people had there items vandalized/looted.The Governor Chimaroke without doubt did his best to ensure things remained normal.I remember my cousin almost panicking when the old man was lynched.I told him to pull it together to avoid any suspicion. We walked all the way to the stadium to make a call through stacom phone boot that day(Then we had no mobile devices). Our families asked we all return home.I can tell you that night i didn't know the carnage done to northerners in the south-east until i went to the Ogbete market park and 82 division. In 82 division it was a refugee camp. With mostly women and children who were spared and alot of the male counter-parts killed.Government then had to make transport arrangement for alot of this people considering there situation.Later on due to the movement of people from the south east and North. The FGN instructed state governors to discourage the max exodus. As this sort of fueled the apprehension it could be back to the civil war days.LEt me tell you that the media focused mainly on the Kaduna crisis and ignored all that was happening in the South-east.I can tell you people were killed substantially in Abia and Imo states. Then later on the Anambra saga.Where non-Igbo speaking persons were lynched and killed crossing the Niger bridge.Inshort i even remember the government technical college around IMT in Enugu attacking the artisan Mosque over a rumor. If not for the intervention of police it was almost gutted down.Somehow it was later burnt down still by same SE people. In garki Enugu too.Killings took place.since the media down plays it.I also mingle with Northern counter parts and its sad what they tell you happens to them in this areas of the south east.In short i remember an Igbo friend telling me that in Umuahia an entire Hausa community was attacked and alot were killed. He told me to his amazement no media house reported this incidence. All they do is say "likely reprisals or reprisal killings" i feel the media should be more elaborate about such crisis there.AS they will,If it was in the North.NL tells you even more than the Nigerian Media will tell you.form eye witness accounts.

mpumalanga: By saying that democracy is shaky, they are trying to make military rule look like the best option which will be a tactic support to the illusive view that only certain group can rule Nigeria.
Northern Nigeria is not the first to experience poverty and they can not use that to justify pogrom because before poverty in the north, pogrom have been in existence and they are blaming poverty because there is no Nzeogwu to blame again.Any society that justifies the use of violence and fear as a means of forcing people together will never know peace.Boko haram should be given the same treatment South Africa gave to 'Pagad' because the people that suppose to be complaining about poverty are those from the old eastern region of Nigeria.
People like you always think negatively of anything from the north.Even the shaky they said now has become an issue for you.Always trying to misrepresent there views on matters or issues. What is wrong with your kind.Where did they suggest a change of government. If only you open your eyes you will see they are referring to the tension that set the different peoples apart and not just democracy as you want to make it look.Atleast thank God you didn't even say it's a 2015 ploy to unseat the president. You should go get something to do.You definitely lousy and confused in decoding information as related to you.Better still you have an intensive listening/understanding issue. shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

I think its a bold step in the right direction.SNC and regional autonomy! The elders should know that alot is on there shoulders to turn things around regardless of getting FGN support. They must start with the Northern economy and people.Identify there many problems and wade in to ensure normalcy.
They should call others from the most remote areas to the cities to rise against the Boko Haram elements and criminal elements in our midst.
Its only where the building has a crack that the lizard can enter. The Northern citizens must be made to understand they hold there future in there hands and its up to them to build the North.Every hand should be made to come and add value. The same hands should be raised to protect her interest.Forget FGN/GEJ and do your part. The SW has survived with little support from the center. We must learn to walk on our own.Lets build the North from the inside.Set aside ethnicity, fanaticism and extremism.Work towards education and industrialization.

Parents should also be informed and advised to en-role in the adult education/mature student programs. It could also be customize with the modern Almajiri school concept since alot of people still offer Quranic classes regardless of age.

The conflict in the Taraba-Benue area, which has been going on for decades, is principally between the Tivs, on the one hand, and the Jukuns, on the other ("Military revenge in Benue: A population under attack"wink [#6317], [ID 15020]

"The conflict in the Taraba-Benue area, which has been going on for decades, is principally between the Tivs, on the one hand, and the Jukuns, on the other; in recent years, the Jukuns have formed a close alliance with the Fulanis. The Jukuns form the majority in Taraba, while the Tivs form the majority in Benue. There are also sizeable Tiv minorities in Taraba, Nasarawa and Plateau states, and a small Jukun minority in Benue. The conflict in Taraba between Tivs and Jukuns has tended to center around competition for land, as well as control over economic resources and political power. Political battles have been especially intense around the control of Wukari, the traditional Jukun center in Taraba State. There have been disputes over the siting of the boundary between Benue and Taraba states, respect (or disrespect) for boundary demarcations, and political control of the border towns and villages. In broad terms, the Jukuns claim to be the original inhabitants of Taraba State, or "indigenes," and consider the Tivs as settlers. The Tivs reject this view, on the basis that they too have been living there for several generations and therefore have equal rights; they complain of being marginalized and excluded in Taraba. Likewise, the Jukun minority in Benue also complain of marginalization, lack of employment opportunities, and insecurity. There has been periodic fighting between these groups since the late 1950s, with sporadic outbreaks in 1964, 1976, and again in 1990-1992. Over the years, the communities have found increasing difficulty in living together peaceably. Benue is often referred to as the Tiv state, and Taraba as that of the Jukuns. Political polarisation has gradually turned into physical segregation too: as violence has intensified in Taraba, an increasing number of Tivs have fled into Benue. Tivs have complained of persecution in Taraba and talk of a deliberate campaign of "ethnic cleansing," primarily by the Jukuns, allied with the Fulanis, and now additionally backed up by the military. They have claimed that these operations are deliberately timed to ensure that the Jukuns have the political advantage in Taraba in the run-up to elections scheduled in 2003. In addition, the rivalries between Tivs and Jukuns have always had the potential to escalate into an even more serious conflict at the national level, as both groups are well represented in the national army. The violence in Taraba intensified in the second half of 2001. Organized bands of Tivs, Jukuns, and Fulanis were responsible for scores of deaths of civilians and widespread destruction of homes during this period, with attacks taking place on a weekly, and sometimes a daily basis. From the first week of September 2001 onwards, in particular, there was a series of attacks and counter-attacks by Tiv and Jukun armed groups, including on border towns and villages. These continued into December 2001 and January 2002."

"The conflict between the Tiv and the Jukun, two different ethnic groups coexisting in Taraba State in Nigeria, had numerous causes. These included disputes over land, traditional rulership, political authority, fears of domination and marginalisation. While this conflict centered [sic!] around the issue of settlers and indigenes, which is common in many parts of Nigeria."

Dozens of people killed and thousands forced to flee their homes when fresh outbreak of ethnic fighting between Tiv and Jukun erupted in Taraba State ("Nigeria: Renewed ethnic clashes erupt in central region"wink [#4814], [ID 15023]

"Several hundreds of people have been killed since the longstanding dispute between Tivs and their Jukun neighbours over land ownership, flared up in violence in September. Troops sent in by President Olusegun Obasanjo into the area to quell the violence became mired in the conflict after 19 of their men were killed by a Tiv militia. Reprisal attacks mounted by soldiers in October against several Tiv villages resulted in the death of more than 200 people and the displacement of tens of thousands of others. Residents of the affected area have continued to report military activity in their districts against unarmed villagers, with more people being killed, injured or forced to flee their homes."

Dozens of people killed and thousands forced to flee their homes when fresh outbreak of ethnic fighting between Tiv and Jukun erupted in Taraba State ("Nigeria: Renewed ethnic clashes erupt in central region"wink [#4814], [ID 15024]

"A fresh outbreak of ethnic fighting has erupted in Nigeria’s central region Taraba State, with dozens of people killed and thousands forced to flee their homes, local officials told IRIN on Monday. More than 100 armed men, suspected to be part of an ethnic Tiv militia, attacked several settlements of their neighbours, the Jukuns, in the Donga area, near the border with Benue State on Saturday, burning houses and killing several people, John Adamu, an official of the Taraba State government said."

50 people killed when militia from the Tiv community attacked settlements of the Jukun people near the town of Donga ("Land clash in central Nigeria"wink [#4798], [ID 15025]

"Reports are emerging from central Nigeria of a clash between two local communities which has left up to 50 people dead. A spokesman for the Taraba state government said militia from the Tiv community attacked settlements of the Jukun people near the town of Donga over the weekend. Details of the attacks remain sketchy, but tensions over land rights in the remote region have led to frequent clashes in recent months. The spokesman said Tiv youths crossed the border from Benue state - effectively the boundary between the two warring communities - and attacked Jukun settlements. There are also reports of hundreds of people fleeing the area."

At least 550,000 people displaced after ethnic clashes between members of the Tiv and Jukun communities ("Nigeria: Over half a million displaced in central region, official says"wink [#4543], [ID 15026]

"Since September, fresh waves of displaced people fleeing fighting between members of the Tiv and Jukun communities in areas along the border between Benue and Taraba have taken refuge in several camps around the Benue capital, Makurdi. There they joined people displaced by earlier clashes between Tivs and Hausa-speaking Azeris in nearby Nasarawa State. However, officials said, the largest contingent of displaced people are those who have been flooding the refugee camps since soldiers attacked and ransacked several Tiv communities in late October in apparent retaliation for the killing of 19 of their colleagues by a Tiv militia earlier in the month."

Conflicts involving Tivs, who are mainly farmers, and Jukun, who are mainly from pastoral or fishing communities, are mostly over land ownership ("Up to 300,000 displaced in central region"wink [#4469], [ID 15027]

"Large numbers of displaced people are staying in several camps around the Benue State capital, Makurdi, where they joined others who had fled an earlier fighting in June between Tivs and Hausa-speaking Azeris in nearby Nasarawa State. Tivs are the majority ethnic group in Benue State but have significant populations in other central region states, including Taraba, Nasarawa, Adamawa and Plateau. The conflicts involving the Tivs, who are mainly farmers, and their neighbours who are mainly from pastoral and fishing communities, are mostly over land ownership. There are widespread fears that prolonged conflict in the region, which is one of Nigeria's food producing areas, is likely to undermine the country's food security."

More than 100 people killed in ethnic unrest in Nasarawa/ at least 35,000 Tiv people reportedly fled ("Nigeria clashes leave 100 dead"wink [#2837], [ID 15028]

"More than 100 people have died in five weeks of bloody clashes in the central Nigeria state of Nasarawa. (…) It was reportedly triggered by the murder of a prominent chief from a rival Hausa-speaking community. The Tivs were blamed for his death. Eyewitnesses in Tudun Adabu at the time reported that young children, old women and local chiefs had been killed with machetes in an orgy of violence. The government sent police reinforcements to the area to help control the fighting. At least 35,000 Tiv people reportedly fled Nasarawa state, and some are now living in refugee camps to the south."

I think this is something the Nigerian government should be looking at closely abeg o!The Libyan rebels in Niger and refugees pouring in from the Northern Mali conflict. The Tuareg fighters are distributed along Niger and could pose a treat to the Nigerian state if not anything. They supported Ghaddfi and are capturing Northern Mali.
We are talking about assisting Mali (through ECOWAS) repel the rebels from Northern Mali. Before we go further abeg FGN should start serious border surveillance of the North-eastern frontier. Also a strong force be kept on stand-by with a strong punch need be.From amoured divisions to aerial support aircraft.
The Tuareg are getting closer to our sphere and i don't want to wake up one morning and realize a section of the nation had being seized by renegade rebel faction. Not forgetting the Boko haram invasion of Kano and Yobe recently and the police were left in rubbles while the army stood by.This volatile areas must have a rapid force with enough punch to defeat a small country like Niger need be o!It should be made clear to Niger and chad to be alert else in any case Nigeria will disregard borders and invade them o!Lastly we should even populate this nations(Niger, chad,Benin, cameroon and Mali) with the intelligence committee(aka NIA).
FGN needs to finish off this Boko haram issue to dialogue or the alternative fast.Atleast relegate there strength o!.It is critical FGN look beyond BH and look at international insurgency with intent to capture sizable areas of sovereign nations.
