My beloved country. I just realized it that if one have a good job in Nigeria, one will be happy in this country and be happy than in the UK where one work y ass off. I am very free in Nigeria and I am not relocating again. A country that my wife has bin for years, she can't even save penny while me in Nigeria, just five months I av saved close to 1M. All I see in the UK is just the beauty, that is all. All y savings goes back to the system. I now like my country Nigeria and very comfortable.

Yes I hope to do the CFA qualification too but I am currently running ACCA. I am thinking of finishing the ACCA first before doing CFA. I am still at the early stages of ACCA and I know for sure that CFA is more relevant to my experience.

What do you think? Should I continue with ACCA or jump ship now to CFA since I haven’t gone far with ACCA?

Which of the qualifications(ACCA or CFA) brings more opportunities in the wider London economy asides the banking industry?

I’m no expert in these matters, but while not in anyway disrespecting its holders, my personal opinion is that ACCA is a dime a dozen these days. Got mine years ago, and in hindsight, I probably should have committed that much time and effort to something more valuable. It’s why I didn’t mention it in my initial response, and instead encouraged you to go for CFA.

Now, it’s your decision to make, and I’m in no position to tell you what to do, but CFA would surely distinguish you in a saturated market like the City, but your ability/capability to pull it off is another matter entirely. I flirted with the idea some 12 years ago but it was too demanding for me and I never got to write the Level 1 exam (I knew I’d fail!). I instead took the easy way out, just to have a certification (i.e. ACCA). In other words, if you’re able and capable, CFA is certainly the better charter to hold, but if you’re like me (in the sense of knowing your capabilities, circumstance, etc., and staying true to yourself) I’d say “continue with the ACCA”, as half loaf is better than none at all!

In conclusion, both are valuable, one is just more relevant and rewarding than the other. Another thing would be to finish the ACCA, then later top it up with CFA, if you’re up to it. Afterall, learning never stops.

Since you were a former Nigerian banker like me, my questions are:
1.) Did you have to retrain? Or was it easy for you to get into banking with your previous experience in Nigeria?
2.) Are salaries for bankers enough to sustain a household of 3 conveniently?
3.) If I need to retrain, what fields would you recommend I focus on?

Sorry I ask because I am a novice to UK although I also worked as a banker in another country apart from Naija too.

I am flexible to retrain cos it’s putting enough food on the table for the family that matters most as well as having something a little tangible to save too. The profession is secondary.

I think your profile is impressive, and a move will make sense. I also do not think you have to retrain, as your experience and qualifications are very relevant, in my opinion. Have you thought of CFA? That, in my opinion, will make some (if not a lot of) difference. You may also wish to google Treasury and Investment Banking jobs in the UK, to have an idea of the relevant requirements for those roles.

Finally, I didn’t have to retrain, as my experience is cross-functional, and not banking-specific. I still do the same things, but in a different sector. However, I’ve had to pick up a few certifications to bolster my chances. Same thing a CFA would do for you.

And oh, you’ll be fine. Any decent job will sustainably support your family of 3, if your priorities are right. You can start small and scale up as your situation gradually improves.

Is banking lucrative/easy to get in or should I switch profession and learn something new like IT? What profession(s) should I focus on as a newbie that can make me move ahead?

I am completely vague on this and would be grateful for your advice.

You worked as a “banker” in what role?
That word is used loosely in Nigeria, and most Nigerian so-called “bankers” are actually bank workers. I know this because I used to be one!
What are your qualifications, and what’s your specialty/experience like? Investment Banking? Banking Operations? Credit? Treasury? Audit? Control? Compliance? Corporate Finance?
This is what should determine the path you’ll follow when you make the move. Otherwise, you may have to retrain as you’ve suggested.

You must be married for 10 years to a citizen to become a citizen. only citizens can access loans.

So,in effect and I stand to be corrected, you will come to the uk ,rent and grocery and transport and entertainment bills will increase, you will go to school putting even further stress on her salary.

Please line up a job or have a plan before you leave Nigeria. Money stress can collapse marriages.

I noticed that you ignored the rest of my questions, but here you go...

If your missus doesn’t want you to join her, the best advice to you would be to stay put and develop your career in Nigeria, while you take turns to visit each other, maybe once every year. I say this for the sake of peace and your marriage.

That said, let me share a short story with you. I know someone who was earning about 4 times your monthly salary in Nigeria before deciding to join his family in the UK mid last year. Today, that amount is what he sends to Nigeria as monthly Naira savings, after taking care of his UK bills and reasonable amount of savings in Pounds Sterling. Maybe he was just lucky, maybe not. It depends on a lot of factors.

By the way, why are you so fixated on further studies? You can undergo series of trainings and certifications to get better and make yourself a lot more employable, without necessarily going back to “school” at a huge cost, which you certainly can’t afford at the moment. You’re even talking about government loan, for what? You don’t even need a University degree to get a good job and earn a decent living in the West.

Long story short, you can make it anywhere, even more so in the UK, but you need the right support system, including that of your wife, who you’d be moving to join. If she doesn’t want you to join her, please don’t, lest you regret leaving everything behind and throwing away whatever you have right now. You’ll need her 100% support if you make the move, and if you have the slightest hunch she won’t be giving her 101%, stay happy in Naija and enjoy your peace of mind.

Did you say your wife doesn’t want you to join her? Or what’s her ongoing complaint about? Is it that UK is difficult because she’s the only one there and she needs you around to share the burden? Or is the complaint to discourage you from joining her?

That said, individual circumstances are different, and what works for A may not necessarily work for B. Your decision should therefore be based on your personal circumstance, including but not limited to the answers to my questions above, your wife’s visa status, your family situation (kids, dependent parents/siblings, etc.), your wife’s employment status and earnings (can she support the whole family - including you - during your settling in/unemployment/underemployment period, which could last between 3-24 months), and so on.

No one has to convince you that anywhere is better. It’s your life, your decision, but most importantly, what does your wife want, being the one you’d be joining? Is she excited about you making the move or she’d rather you stayed put?

This is a general pandemic. Most staff working in the Airport travels from London.Also the Airport is the second busiest in UK. I know friends working over 40hrs weekly.

Are you saying it is easy to get a job at a badly hit Gatwick Airport at the height of this pandemic, or when it’s over (God knows how long it will take for a full recovery)?

For context, BA are already shutting down and moving out of Gatwick (and may never return) and Virgin are about to follow suit.

You probably should ask your friends how scared they are of losing their jobs right now, rather than giving false hopes to others.

PS: I am in no way discouraging anyone from looking for a job at Gatwick. I just don’t want anyone to be misled by the comment “you can easily get a job in Gatwick Airport”!

I guess you don't understand how a Party-System democracy works.

A party has to nominate you as a candidate first, before the general populace can vote to elect you.

This matter is a party affair, for now. It will become a Lagosian affair only after the party has presented its candidate for election. As long as nothing unconstitutional is done in the process, how a party decides on its candidate is nobody's business (except members of the party). The worst that will happen is for the electorates to reject the party's candidate at the general elections.

Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige has revealed how he was attacked by thugs allegedly sponsored by Former Anambra gubernatorial aspirant, Tony Nwoye.

Ngige narrowly escaped death after he was attacked by thugs on Saturday at an APC ward congress meeting in Awka. He was swiftly whisked away by security operatives and aides.

A statement by head of his media office, Chikwelugo Obidiwe, said the subsequent violence that marred the stakeholders’ meeting in Awka on Sunday was not only condemnable but a weird and dangerous phenomenon, completely unknown to opposition politics in the state.

Accusing Tony Nwoye, the statement read;

"What transpired in Awka last Sunday was deliberate and well planned. It was a desperate determination by Hon. Tony Nwoye to rebrand the Anambra APC the violent way.

It was a rehearse of a rogue ideology which has been a trademark from his former party, the PDP. Many were shocked by the swam of cultists, arsonists and deadly thugs that accompanied him to the venue of the meeting because they thought the aphorism of ‘behaving like the Romans while in Rome’ had impacted some lessons on this political proselytes in the opposition fold. How erroneous they were."

The statement also revealed that the minister actually intervened to rescue of one of the six members of the Ward Congress Committee, posted to the state by the national secretariat of the party, Musa Yunusa, who had been beaten black and blue by the thugs.

"The minister, already taken to safety by his security, broke away from protection, to intervene to rescue Yunusa, almost lifeless. The doctors, as we speak, battled to save his life at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, from where he was transferred to another hospital, because of the JOHESU strike. The interest of the minister, we wish to state, once more, was to ensure a credible exercise as the leader of the party in Anambra State."
