You are getting it wrong, he has gone beyond his financial budget. Look at the big picture, if he takes out more money and cant pay his rent where will the woman and the baby stay. Financial prudence helps take care of unnecessary burden in the future.
Add medical bills(which she gulps a major part of and is close to delivery and possible CS which he is expected to pay), monthly budget for house rent, budget for transport, budget for lunch at work and the bulk food he buys plus the 50k and see if there is any money remaining from the 110K. Note I only added the necessary expenses one cant run away from. That dude has gone beyond his elastic limit.

The one remaining will not be up to 35% and he is expected to budget for rent, transport, lunch at work, savings for side hustle and miscellaneous. That's the simplest way to get reduced conviction but the lawyer will want to play smart that she wasn't on the scene of the crime when it happened and not knowing the said lady has several version of the incident to her credit. You are correct, She needs to prove duress to jettison the first story but unfortunately for her the statement wasn't even taken by the police but the media. It was a video evidence and she spilled everything to the press, it's going to be really hard for the counsel of the accused to prove beyond doubt that the interview was done under duress.
The facts of the investigation goes with the first account rather the the second, surely she will get the death penalty hammer because under cross examination she cant hold unto that second narration.

We are in the 21st century where studying a particular course should not limit you only within the confines of your country. If your are within the top 2% of your class, even if you have lesser opportunities in Nigeria you can go global. Improve your skills in all facets of life computer programming skill, leadership skills and pop into USA market where such skills are really needed in abundance, this you can easily do via graduate school. Register for the GRE exams, since you have few years before post NYSC , try and ACE it within these few years you have and watch funding go your way. That you see people studying your course and struggling doesn't mean your course isn't a hot cake elsewhere, be open and be positive.
N/B this mostly work for students who are within the top 2 % in their academics.
