CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 2:10pm On Apr 11, 2008
JJay1:
Diplomas arent same as degrees!!! Period
You lie. Diploma in Germany is the same as a Degree.

SegzyJoe:
Until recently in the early 90s, you only need three credits to gain admission to any polytechnic and then you don't need to do any Jamb nor go for NYSC service.
You are very far from the truth. You need 3 credits to go into a Pre-ND program in the polytechnic and not 100 levels just the same way people with 3 credits go into Pre-degree and Remedial programs in the university and not 100 levels.

And polytechnic graduates with HND have been going for NYSC before the early 90's

@HND-holder

Polytechnics in Ghana now award BTech, why can't Nigerian government amend the laws establishing and controlling polytechnics in Nigeria so as to allow dem award BTech too??
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 8:41am On Apr 09, 2008
@HND-holder
I have said it before that converting kaduna polytechnic and yaba college of Technology into universities really implies that polytechnics are inferior to universities, else if polytechnics and universities are the same in Nigeria why trying to convert one to the other in the first place??

My own advice is that polytechnics should remain as polytechnics but should be allowed to run ND, HND/BTech, MTech/MSc and PHd programs; that is when people will come to agree that the polytechnic is more or less a university of Technology.

what exactly do u want to know about ATMs?? How to install and maintain or how it works??
EducationRe: Help! B.sc Maths Or Statistics by ishmael(m): 12:55pm On Mar 12, 2008
you can as well go for a Bsc in Computer science.
EducationRe: Help! B.sc Maths Or Statistics by ishmael(m): 12:49pm On Mar 10, 2008
They are the same thing. The difference is not much. Statistics students take more stats and probability courses than Mathematics students while mathematics students take more pure maths courses than statistics students. Most Mathematicians still work as Statisticians and vice versa.

Go for any one of the two; both courses are very good.
ProgrammingRe: Can Anybody Help Me For Fortran. by ishmael(m): 11:28am On Mar 08, 2008
Do't mind them. FORTRAN 2008 is on the way coming.
ProgrammingRe: Can Anybody Help Me For Fortran. by ishmael(m): 4:16pm On Mar 06, 2008
They still teach FORTRAN in nigerian universities/polytechnics. For those saying it is old, come to Nigeria and enter any university/polytechnic and tell your FORTRAN lecturer that his course is archaic that you will not offer it and see if you go ever fit graduate. Fortran in some schools is a 4 credit unit course especially for engineering, mathematics, statistics and computer science students.
EducationRe: No B.sc - No P.hd How True? by ishmael(m): 5:01pm On Mar 02, 2008
With your HND today you can very well do a PGD, Msc and PhD. Do not let anyone discourage you that you cannot do a PhD.
EducationRe: Hnd Vs Bsc, B. Eng, Etc by ishmael(m): 4:55pm On Mar 02, 2008
@ayotunde

Thanx for your contribution. It is only people like you that have attended both schools that can tell us the truth.
EducationRe: The End Of Polytechnic In Nigeria by ishmael(m): 7:08pm On Feb 29, 2008
@HND-holder
polytechnic education is still needed in nigeria. Can any country grow technologically without technicians and technologists?? Or you think it is university graduates that made Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea to develop technologically??
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 4:33pm On Feb 15, 2008
No Bsc holder has been able to come out and tell us why they feel Bsc is superior to the polytechnic HND. Anyway me no blame dem; na government me blame.

ishmel thnks u so mch,

Thanx. Honestly those of us that passed through the polytechnic system are good theoretically and pratically, but the discrimination against HND certificate, which is supposed to be the equivalent of a Degree has lowered the morale of HND graduates. Until the National assembly and FG come up with a solution that will stop the discrimination, i will rather advice ND holders to go and start 100Levels in the university than going for HND program.

I think  it is the word DIPLOMA that Nigerian employers hate. Why not they change the meaning of HND from Higher National Diploma to Higher National Degree?? May be that could solve the discrimination problem. But i still wonder why the discrimination against the name Diploma when in countries like  Germany the Diploma is the same as a Bachelors Degree, and in Ireland a Higher Diploma is higer than a Bachelors Degree.
EducationRe: Considering Statistics As A Course by ishmael(m): 9:38am On Feb 11, 2008
Statistics is a very good course. Stop talking about life in campus; what matters most is life after campus. Try and get a 2.1.

But get ready to do all sort of advanced mathematics/statistics courses, operations research courses and computer programming courses.

Yes, you can go into IT or accounting and do excellently well there because of the mathematical skills you have.

If you want a useful language, u should go for any of perl, python, c++, .Net, java. Those old lecturers in school keep feeding us with outdated and not so relevant languages. Thats what annoys me about some Nigerian Univerisities. The lecturers never take time to update themselves. 08034930001
Don't mind Nigerian lecturers; later some Nigerians will be comparing our educational system with that of europe and america.
EducationRe: Hnd Or Bsc by ishmael(m): 9:38am On Feb 06, 2008
Please don't go anything close to HND. Go for a Bsc program. I'm talking from experience too.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 8:55am On Feb 06, 2008

@Ishmael
it's patently clear you have little knowledge of what a Reservoir Engineer does. You do not even know what a hydrocarbon reservoir is!

The 'design' of a reservoir isn't done by 'whites' or 'blacks'. it's done by nature over millions of years, dummy.
The reservoirs i work on are thousands of feet below the earth's surface.

That's why you aren't an Engineer. You lack simple research skills.
I don't know what a Reservior engineer is. Reservior Engineers work closely with geologist and geophysicist thats all i know in oil fields. But it still does nt make you an Engineer anyway, because you are contributing nothing to the research and analysis reservior engineers do there. I'm not even sure you are one.You are still a glorified mechanic fixing and welding broken pipes for the company thats all.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 9:32pm On Feb 05, 2008
@texazzpete

How many of those oil reserviors did you design?? You did no engineering job there but fixing and probably repairs and maintenance. the design and develoment was done by the whites.

You are a glorified mechanic doing fixing and repairs.

rookie:
Criticizing the poor guy's choice of programming language doesn't help his situation either, If in the first place you do not know if it is a school requirement.
It is a school requirement in most Nigerian universities. I say they still do Basic programming. Some Computer Science and Engineering students do FORTRAN too.

The funniest thing is that most of the lecturers are used to the older versions of these languages and as such find it very difficult to teach the newer versions. Some lecturers teach students GW-BASIC with line numbers and not even QBASIC; some lecturers teach students FORTRAN 77 and not FORTRAN 90, why?? Simple, they are not used to the newer languages and NUC has refused to update and overhaul their curricula.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 5:17pm On Feb 05, 2008
@texazzpete

You most be an olodo. Nigerian engineers are not competent, and what about that?? How many aircrafts have u designed and built in Nigeria? How many bridges and building have u designed and built without inviting foreigners or sending nigerians to go for training abroad?? Why can't we be independent??

Please stop parading yourself as an engineer because  Technicians in Europe, Japan, Korea and America are far better than you in engineering.

You are a glorified mechanic thats all.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 4:30pm On Feb 05, 2008
@oyb

You try. But is this design a new design?? cos it looks like the one i saw in one text book recently. Please also help us tell your electrical colleagues to help us solve power (PHCN) issue in Nigeria.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 12:22pm On Feb 05, 2008
@oyb

Pls read all my previous posts and tell me where i ever said it is the work of engineers to carry out constuction work or repairs and fixing. I have been emphasizing that Engineers design and develop new things while Technicians fix and repair. The problem we have in Nigeria you and other Engineers have not designed anything for Nigeria. Most of you do fixing and repairs which is the duty of Technicians.
ProgrammingRe: Qbasic On Windows Xp by ishmael(m): 6:40pm On Feb 04, 2008
Most schools in Nigeria still do QBasic. The guy probably is still a student and QBasic happens to be the programming language they are starting with. Nobody is saying that QBasic is not old; but Nigerian schools still teach them. most universities in Nigeria still do QBASIC, FORTRAN, PASCAL and COBOL which people obviously will call obsolete languages. If you were to be in the guy's shoes would you tell ur lecturer, HOD or VC that you will not offer those courses??
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 2:32pm On Feb 04, 2008
Our Engineering curriculum should be overhauled to meet global standards.

Our Lecturers should try and update their engineering skills and knowlegde.

Government should give more attention and invest more in engineering.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 6:03pm On Feb 01, 2008
@oldie

We are still saying the samething; that is, they are not competent. They have not lived up to expectations. How many machines or machine parts have they designed and built, that people are using?? It is what oyibo people have built that they try to learn how to fix and repair when ever there is a problem or fault; is that what we call engineering?? the engineering i know is about using scientific and mathematical knowledge to design and create new things and not fixing and repairing.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 10:12am On Feb 01, 2008
If you are a competent Engineer, what have you been able to design and develop?? See the truth is that our environment does not make Nigerian Engineers to seen as competent.

why should i be mischievious?? I'm only saying the truth. You are only trying to be a patriotic Nigerian thats all. Come out and say the truth jo.

People like Ishmael are clueless and have the environmental perception of who an engineer is or what an engineer does
The Nigerian Engineer has been called several names; Air-conditioned engineer, Theoretical engineer,
Arm chair engineer including Coat wearing engineer. Forgetting that engineering is about the use of brain as
against 'brawl' the society (Nigerian Society) does not have regard for any intellectual or creative work.

There are damn good engineers practising in all engineering facets in Nigeria and worldwide.
If you are ignorant about who an engineer is, how would you know what he/she does?
Mister know all. How many computer microchips and hard drives have our computer engineers designed and developed?? How many transistors and capacitors have our electonic engineers designed and developed?? How many injectors and carburetors have our Automobile engineers designed and developed?? Tell me one house and bridge our civil engineers designed and built that has not collapsed?? just to ask a few. Please just tell us one thing that Nigerian Engineers in Nigeria have designed and developed and people are using today? They are meant to be engineers anyway, but they are not Engineers because all they do in Nigeria is fixing and repairing; competing with Technicians.

please goto google and type the word engineer to know more about who an engineer is and what he does.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by ishmael(m): 6:35pm On Jan 31, 2008
No, i'm not an Engineer. I'm a Technician because i ve never engineered anything before, but i fix and repair very well.
ComputersRe: Straightthrough Or Crossover Cabling, Which Should I Use Pls? by ishmael(m): 6:10pm On Jan 31, 2008
If the 2 switches are going to be on the same LAN use a straight cable it will work very well; mind you the length of the cable matters o, it should not exceed 100m.
