CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 1:01pm On Sep 02, 2006
Wumine:
its unfair the way thet treat HND holders in nigeria. they are even better than BSC holders to me!
Wumine, nigerians will soon come to know that, when senate finally passes the bill on poly discrimination. Imagine, people no longer want their children to go to polytechnics again. But do you blame them?? after all nigeria and nigerians discrimate against people with polytechnic certificates. Thank God it is coming to an end already. Perhaps they should include giving priority to polytechnic graduates in their bill?? May be that will attract more intelligent people to the polytechnics; and the better for nigeria.
CareerRe: Senate Considers Bill On Degree, Hnd Harmonisation. by ishmael(m): 11:51am On Sep 01, 2006
This calls for celebration, joy and happiness for all nigerian polytechnic HND graduates, lecturers, staff and students of nigerian polytechnics. Parents whose children are graduates of polytechnics or undergraduates of polytechnics should also celebrate.

Our God is not asleep.
EducationRe: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by ishmael(m): 7:12pm On Aug 31, 2006
If the Bsc graduates feel they are better than HND graduates theoritically, the HND graduates also feel they are better than the Bsc graduates practically.
PoliticsRe: Which Zone Should Produce The Next President? by ishmael(m): 6:17pm On Aug 31, 2006
Why all these zoning issue in the first place? I thought nigeria has fully embraced democracy? In democracy there is nothing like zoning; it is a govt of the people by the people and for the people. Whether north or south, east or west all we want is a God-fearing and sincere leader. If the person like make e come from Bakassi or chad sef, the most important thing is for nigeria to be better than it is presently. Let the wealth of the nation go round; let every nigerian benefit and have a taste of the national cake. All these south-south, south- east, north whatever agitations are all rubbish and nonsense.

ComputersRe: My Fairly Used Laptop Is Too Slow by ishmael(m): 12:56pm On Aug 31, 2006
my advice to u is to confirm if the laptop can be upgraded(i.e. increasing the RAM to 256MB and getting a HDD of atleast 40Gb).Some laptops dont even run well on 128MB. If it can be upgraded go ahead and do the upgrading, else keep that laptop out of sight because its as good as a 386 machine. But the person wey sell am to you really wound you. When did you become a nairalander? You should have told the house about the laptop b4 paying 4 it. We would have adviced you to to go for it; any way its already late. Let us know b4 you buy the next laptop oo. Just take heart.

EducationRe: Hnd Is Better Than Bsc by ishmael(op): 7:42am On Aug 31, 2006
The qualification of the person that teaches does not really matter. A professor in computer science that does not know practical networking and a National Diploma holder in computer science with CCNA & CCNE plus practical experience in networking; who do you think can teach students who want to learn networking very well? Mind you networking is a Technical job.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 7:29am On Aug 31, 2006
Donmayor, good point there. At the end of the day we all need each other to do our jobs effectively; how do you see it? In engineering , for example the job cannot start without an engineer, and the job cannot be completed without the technicians and technologists.
Men, its a great thing oo; Poly and uni graduates really need each other.
EducationRe: Hnd Is Better Than Bsc by ishmael(op): 5:46pm On Aug 30, 2006
Hnd will always be better than Bsc because of the technical and technological skills the HND holders posses.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 5:41pm On Aug 30, 2006
Donmayor, everyone of us whether HND or Bsc holder needs a higher degree or professional qualification to excel. Stop saying it as if it is only HND graduates that need it. Infact the Bsc graduates need it more than the HND graduates to increase their skills on the job which the HND holders already posses. And secondly one of the problems HND holders had in Nigeria was the bar placed on them; thank God the bar has been removed and every one of us can rise up to the peak and zenith of his career with his or her HND or Bsc. But just as you said, it will be safer for every body (HND and Bsc holders) to get additional degrees and professional qualifications.
EducationRe: ND Holder: HND or 100 Level at University? by ishmael(m): 4:10pm On Aug 30, 2006
Dont be dicouraged in going to do HND. If you get a direct entry to do a Bsc program, fine. But the main thing is to be good in which ever one you choose to do. Be able to defendyour certificate at the end of the day. Bsc and HND are good qualifications, but the most important thing is to be able deliver well when called upon.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 1:23pm On Aug 30, 2006
its not a new thing my brother; na stale news sef say HND holders do better than Bsc holders in tests and interviews. The obvious reason is that the polytechnic curriculum is richer, wider and more technical than the university curriculum. Polytechnics were established to do those things universities have not been able to do, to solve problems universities have not been able to solve and to invent things universities and their graduates have never thought of inventing. Try and get nigerian course curricula for a particular course, say Business Administration from NBTE and NUC, compare and contrast you will see why HND graduates excel or do better in tests and interviews than their Bsc counterparts. Polytechnic graduates are good.
EducationRe: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by ishmael(m): 12:22pm On Aug 30, 2006
The truth is that we have more university graduates in nigeria than polytechnic graduates. This whole thing started when the university graduates were no longer comfortable with the HND holders becos the HND holders were already showing outstanding performances in their various fields; and they felt that one day HND graduates will take over everything from them including administration, so they decided to start relegating and placing bars on HND holders so as to prevent them from taking over from them or dominating. Note that at that time out of every 100 graduate u see only 10 had HND (i.e. 10%) the rest were university degree graduates, and at that time polytechnics just started churning out HND graduates. HND started in nigeria around 1980 or so while we had Bsc graduate as far back as 1950's. So it was very easy for them to manipulate and relegate polytechnic graduates. They so polytechnic graduate as threat to their offices and positions. But today what is the result of all those arrangee?? Under-development especially in the Technical, Technological,Engineering and production sectors. My fellow brothers take it or leave it polytechnics were established to create/invent, tackle technological issues and look for solutions to Technological problems the universities and their curricula cannot solve.

it happens like that everywhere now in nigera, its not a new thing.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 8:45am On Aug 30, 2006
People, if our leaders cannot reason well by putting a round peg in a squared hole that does nt mean that we should follow them. Since we know what is right we should do it please. Have you ever wondered why developed nations are developed?? Do you think it is because of the number of professors and Doctors they have there?? No, it is because of the priority and attention they give to technology. We too in nigeria should also invest in technology and see what will happen. Nigeria has succeeded in wasting money carrying  out researches in the universities with nothing coming out of them. And no money was given to polytechnics to carry out similar or a different research. Go to the polytechnics and see for yourself what engineering Technologist design and build; go and see the prototypes and models of so many machines and all that in their worshops with no funds to finish up such projects. I'm still surprised that we still have not asked ourselves why we cannot manufacture anything at all in nigeria. Polytechnics and universities are institutions of higher learning needed by any growing nation. So if after investing money in the universities and nothing good comes out of it, we should not use that result to make conclusions that polytechnics cannot do better. For God's sake polytechnic graduates need encouragement and not discrimination. If you feel you are good as a university graduate come out  and prove yourself; same applies to a polytechnic graduate, if you know you are good come out and prove your self too. Lets stop using certificates to judge output. I must say it here that many HND holders are not good just as we have Bsc holders that are not better than secondary school students.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 7:09pm On Aug 29, 2006
Donmayor, its on one of the nigerian newspapers today that ESUT is one of the best universities in nigeria, among the 1st 6. I think it should be thisday newspaper or so. It will be very wrong of you to look down at state universities. I dont believe that federal university graduates are better than than state university graduates. It sounds very funny and naive. Anyway sha its nigerian mentality.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 7:01pm On Aug 29, 2006
Donmayor, yes some polytechnic graduates would have done better if they were university graduates; so also some university graduates too would have done better if they were polytechnic graduates. Some engineers would have been doing better as engineering technologists and some engineering technologist would have been doing better as engineers. Donmayor the skills some polytechnic graduates in engineering technology possess most university engineers lack it and vice versa. The point here is that you cannot eat your cake and still have it. You can not be an engineer and still be an engineering Technologist again, its not possible. So you have to choose one and leave the other for another man. To round this up we all need each other. University graduates need polytechnic graduates and vice versa to make things work well.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 4:49pm On Aug 29, 2006
Donmayor, i must confess i really like the way you have been talking on this HND and Bsc issue. You've been unbiased thru out. I believe you will definitely employ competent HND holders to work in your company. Please we need people like you to educate the society on the relevence of polytechnics; and secondly that HND is a technical qualification needed by any developing nation. Cheers!!

niterider does nt know that some diploma holders are more qualified to work than him with his Degree.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 7:34pm On Aug 28, 2006
some polytechnics are even bigger and better equipped than some universities in nigeria, so closing them down will result into great loss to nigeria. let government have a re-think on technical/technological education in nigeria; nigeria needs technology to grow up. our policy makers i guess are all daft people, else they should have been able to come out with better plans to move nigeria forward by ways of encouraging nigerians to enroll into technical colleges and polytechnics, and funding of polytechnics even better than universities. i swear university graduates are responsible for the stagnant growth of nigeria for years now. most of the inventions you see around in nigeria are the handiwork of polytechnic graduates. i beg let the government wake up from its slumber jo. theoretical people can not develop any nation, it is only practical and skillful people that can develop a nation.
EducationRe: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by ishmael(m): 7:15pm On Aug 28, 2006
if thats the case let nigerian polytechnic students go on strike each time any bank or company discriminates against polytechnic graduates. In Ghana HND courses lasts for 3 years with intensive practical /industrial work while the Bsc courses lasts for 4 years. There is nothing like ND in Ghana. U do ur HND straight spending just 3 years unlike nigeria where you do ND 1st for 2 years followed by 1 year industrial trianing then 2 years HND which takes 5 years all together. While 4 years is required to run most Bsc courses, 5 years for BTech and BEng. Let nigerian polytechnic students borrow a leaf from their Ghanian counterparts. I really like the way they tackled the Bsc Vs HND issue.
CareerRe: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 5:20pm On Aug 28, 2006
point of correction, polytechnics train Engineering Technologists at HND level. ND holders may be regarded as Technicians, agreed. Yes, some polytechnic graduates feel inferior when in the midst of university graduates, i have seen where a poly graduate was ashamed to tell people he graduated from a polytechnic, i had to scold the guy for behaving that way. But that is not to say that some HND holders don't feel superior. Some of us even feel we are better than some of you with Bsc. The truth is that some Bsc holders are only lucky to have the Bsc certificate which they carry about, but inwardly they are nothing to write home about. Yes, i have met with some university graduates that find it difficult to solve simple problems even in their areas of specialization. So what will you say about that? Would you prefer to employ such uni graduate to work for you to a poly graduate that is competent? It is the duty of you and i to educate the society and make them know that HND and BSc are mere qualifications, but what makes you a professional are the skills you have acquired which you can use to make positive changes to improve the well-being of the society and the nation at large.
EducationRe: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by ishmael(m): 4:27pm On Aug 28, 2006
Some schools will give you a PGD, but it depends on your credit load sha. Some schools require atleast 120 credit units, so if you have not done up to 120 credits in ur HND you will be asked to do some undergraduate courses 1st to make up the 120 credit units b4 proceeding to do the PGD.

dats true oo.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 12:51pm On Aug 28, 2006
some people think polytechnic is a place where people go to learn trade. Work wey dey polytechnic curriculum pass wetin dey university sef; ask anybody that has tasted the 2 to tell you if u're in doubt. To me university education is irrelevant in nigeria because it brings about negative or no development to the economy. Polytechnic education is what the nation needs presently.

Nigerian needs more of HND than Bsc.
Yes oo; but do they know that??
