dejia:
Jedisco,

Well, I think Oga Lagbaja has done justice to your questions, but since u request us to comment, I will addd my 2 cents.

*1) I don't think u can compare pigggery n poultry, piggery is long term, it takes minimum of 18months to break even, compared to poultry ( broilers) cld be 10weeks.
Also poultry farmers in Nigeria have been able to come together n develop it so well, that you can gets good breeds, equipments, vaccines etc ; that we pig farmers haven't been able to do.

To answer ur question, I think if. It's alll about profit: I think. U shdnt even consider farming in the first place, passion shd come first.if you don't have passion for pigs, I think poultry will be more profitable

2). It is difficult to calc; depends on breed, feed and management; pigs in developed countries convert @ 2.3kg to 1kg weight, in Nigeria.. lots of farmers don't know, you. Will find some pigs that convert @ 4kg; some @ 6kg, some @ 8kg.. I guess it's hard to tell, also depends on the feed; and management. I think the major advantage is, when you sell, you make your money in bulk

3) am located in ilorin.. most pig farmers are in the. S.West, they have a better weather than we in the north and get more bi-product ( BDG,PKC, Gala waste etc
; but we in the north have cheap maize, which is 60percent of feed for pigs in developed. Countries.
Am sure you will find some farmers in kaduna; find what they feed

4) I always advice to ensure you get a. Sizeable land, I honestly think 4plots is small, unless u are sure to acquire more soon; I will recommend a minimum of 20plots, except you intend to start. Andd move to a permanent site within 2-3yrs. Also water, Please ensure you have a borehole; piggery require about 4,000 liters a day if you intend to have about 100 pigs, water is very very important.
Pigs ain't easy to steal, i dont know much about crime in KD

5) housing: depends on materials etc, a standard pen whichh can accommodate about 100pigs will. Cost you between 800k -2Milllion, depending on the type of flooring you intend to use and labour cost also your roofing materials ( Abestos, roofing sheet or tapulin)

6). Pigs smell is worst than that of birds.
Also your waste is more, so you need adequate land to dispose your waste

7) No, you can't channel ur waste to a river. Pls don't do such, dig a pit, or spread it on 2plots of land, when it's dry, bag it; am sure vegetable farmers will buy it of you, or you can use it to grow crops

cool alots of people have piggery n poultry, my poultry pays my monthly running cost for the farm, while the pig is forr the long n medium term; a few. People I know also have piggery n fishery together, some vegetables n piggery.

9) depends on how the pen is designed, e.g I have just 1 person taking care of 150 pigs, because my water is automated, my liquid waste is also automated, all they do is feed n take the solid waste; if you also do so, then u can also have 1 or 2 people, but if everything has to be manual, then you might require more hands,

Most times in Nigeria, we think labour Is cheap, but most of the cheap labour isn't effective. I will recommend atleast ensure you have drinking nipples.

10) We have registered Pork Producers Association of Nigeria; info will soon be avail on how to join etc.

* Last advice, don't rush into it; look for pig farmers around you, find out how it's been done, but dont limit yourself to that.
You won't make money for the first 2yrs, ensure you have enough money to feed for 2yrs. Read, read, learn, don't rush into it.
If you don't have passion for it, don't start it.
If you can get a pen to rent, maybe you start with that and later start yours, when you have gained experience

Hope my 2cent advice was worth reading.
It was really worth reading and is proving helpful and an eye-opener

lemme quickly note some points

1. It's not all about profit, but then, it's got to pay the bills. My profession which I love and also have passion for is quite distant from agriculture. What's pulling me here is passion and also the extra income. I picked on piggery as it would give me the much needed time to pursue my career and other things without the farm being likely to suffer at an early stage unlike poultry. But then, I just wanted to be sure it's worth the investment.

2. So far so good, after thorough searching, I've been able to get the contact of a pig farmer in kaduna though I've not contacted him yet. Most ones I know are local farmers who let their pigs roam. But I would contact him ASAP.

3. I know 4 plots is small for virtually any type of intensive agriculture. I was hoping to start there, test run and then move out. As a new farmer, there is the issue of credit and also not wanting to put too much into something one has not tried. I'm ready to go all in, but just want to be careful at first.

4. The issue of smell is the most worrying one for me now considering dat d area is semi-urban and I don't want people complaining. I would appreciate if you or anyone can shed light on effective waste management so as to control the smell especially where space is limited. Would also follow up on the farmer I have and see how he does his own.

5. You talked about automating the liquid waste. I would appreciate it if you explain how you do that.

Thanks again for your input. Have noted alot of things. I'm also going over the thread again. I'm not in a hurry, but I need to get a foothold within the next 2 years as I have kind of a hiatus now before I get sucked up in my career and then starting may be difficult.

To the house, would also appreciate any input I can get.

Good day everyone.
This is an extremely educative and interesting thread. I've read every post from the very first page and it has been very interesting.
I am an aspiring farmer and hope to start up my farm early next year. So right now, I'm trying to get all the necessary information I need and I hope this group would help me out.

1. I've researched extensively on poultry and was almost setting up a poultry at some point. But den, I had to stop seeing that a poultry is much more delicate and time consuming and that the nature of my work would not give me the time to monitor them closely so I decided to go for a piggery. But I would like to know especially from those who have done both, which is more profitable?

2. I know a lot of people would appreciate it if someone can give good detail on the profit margin for pigs. On the poultry thread, it was done in details by different people such dat one can easily make a projection of how much it takes to train say 10 broilers to market size and the expected market price.

3. Please is there anyone with a piggery around Kaduna axis? Seems most people here are located in the West. I would like to know about sales and sourcing for feed in Kaduna.

4. I plan on starting with four plots (50×100). Though I plan to start small and grow, I would like to know the maximum number of pigs it can take. Also, I plan on moving out into a more rural area later but my I'm cautious now because of security as I know thieves sometimes target piggeries especially those in rural areas.

5. Taking away land, what is the starup cost for a piggery with say 10 pigs. I would like to know about cost of housing and every other thing

6. One of my major discouragement on starting a poultry was that the land I'm looking at is in a semi-urban area and dealing with the smell and noise ain't easy. I would like to know if such problems are marked with pigs. Are they really noisy and does the farm smell alot?

7. The plot is not too far from a river so I was wondering, can I channel the waste to the river?

8. What other aspect of farming can be successfully combined with a piggery to effectively reduce cost. I know people combine poultry and fishery with good results. What are the options for a piggery?

9. Someone said 2-3 people are enough to run a small pig farm. What is the average amount people here pay their farm workers? This is important to me as I may not be there always so I need capable hands.

10. Lastly, I'm thinking we can put up a BBM group or channel as we could share information faster there. This is especially good for those who don't want to release their phone numbers for a whatsapp group.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to informative responses

Good day too.

Depends on where exactly you want the land as I bought mine along the airport axis ( where the seems to be more land at the moment). The Etoi area is the fast developing urban area of Uyo. Here land cost at least 1mn Naira and above.

Since it's for farming don't go near the Shelter Afrique, that's like the Lekki in Uyo, Ewet area is the Ikoyi.

Besides, I reside along the airport Road. Welcome to Akwa Ibom State.
Thanks.
I've been to Uyo once but that was about 4-5 yrs ago. One thing I noticed was that the government was trying but the human capital development from the people end wasn't as stellar e.g the keke (an indigene) guy told me most of the keke people came from Aba and usually returned on Fridays and also the houses I saw didn't match the infrastructure in terms of quality but these may have changed over time. That may affect the buying power of the people. How much is a life pig sold there per Kg and what's the market demand like? I know prices may be higher around PH and some parts of the SE, but so may be initial start up costs like land.
I'm asking cos I'm considering on whether to relocate down south from Kaduna and start up.
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by jedisco(m): 4:02pm On May 24, 2015
lagbaja:
For the start up pig farmers. Let me do you a bit of business analysis to help you with the minimum investment ( in terms of how many pigs you should raise and sell per annum) to make to be a profitable pig farmer.

Here it goes:

Profit = Sales - Total Cost. ............ equation 1
Profit = Sales - ( Fixed cost + Variable cost )...............equation 2

Fixed Cost- these are costs you incur whether you like it or not. For example staff salary, rentage, interest on loan, enery cost, management cost. etc.

Variable Cost- these are costs associated with the products ( pigs ) you are producing . They increase or decrease as the volume of product increases or decreases. Eg feed, medications. Weaner purchase. Etc.

Now, for any business , your interest is to make profit. To make profit, you must cover both your variable and fixed costs, otherwise you will run at a loss. Therefore, you must break even to start making profit.

The break even point is the point when your profit totally covers all your costs.

At break even, Profit = 0 .....................Equation 3

Therefore our equation 1 becomes

Profit = 0 = Sales - ( Fixed Cost + Variable Cost)...............Equation 4

Therefore, at break even point,

Sales = Fixed Cost + Variable Cost. ...............Equation 5

Remember that Pigs are sold per kg. therefore, our total annual sales is

Number of kg of pigs sold x unit price ( Selling price varies between N280 and N300)

Equation 5 becomes

Quantity (kg) x Unit Selling Price = Fixed Cost + Quantity (kg)x Unit Cost Price.................Equation 6

If we rearrange this equation it will be:

Fixed Cost = Q*Unit Selling Price - Q*Unit Cost Price.

Fixed Cost = Q * ( Unit Selling Price - Unit Cost Price)

Q = Fixed Cost/(Unit Selling price - Unit Cost Price).................Equation 7

Q, here represents the minimum number of kg of pigs we must sell per month ( or per annum ) to break even.

For every kg of pig we sell. It cost us money . I have previously explained the concept of FCR. Let's assume your FCR is 4. And our average cost of feed is N50. Therefore, It will cost you N200 to produce 1kg of pig.

So let's assume what your fixed cost will be.

You hired 2 staff @ N15,000 each. You allocate to yourself N10k for all cost of running around. Other sundry fixed cost at N10k ( veterinary doctor and other expenses). Let us assume that your total monthly cost is N50,000.

From question 7

Q= 50,000 / (N280- N200)= 50,000/80. = 625kg

From above, If we assume that the average size of your pigs are 63kg, it means you must sell a minimum of 10 pigs per month to break even.

So annually, you must raise and sell 120 pigs of that size. If you don't, you are running at a loss. This should not be a big deal if you plan your business well. We already know that a pig can farrow up to 20 piglets per annum under good management.

Also, as a wise startup farmer, it might make sense for you to buy weaners for fattening from other farmers and raise while you wait for your own sows to start farrowing.

If you want to test your own profitabliiy, change each parameter ( like the fixed cost, feed cost per kg, selling price and others ) and know how much investment you need to make.
Very good analysis.
I believe you own a piggery. I would appreciate it if you can be more practical and perhaps add figures to the equations from your early days seeing that most new farmers may not have these ready figures.
I would give an example with the poultry thread where people gave estimates from those starting from scratch to those who already have basic infrastructure. Infact one could ascertain how much it should take (all things being equal ) to raise a broiler to sale point and at what price one should sell to make what profit. And d price estimates were from different people with different experiences. I would really appreciate if someone similar can be mirrored here

@Rawani

Among all you listed, the one that stands out is that of cutting the budget.
I just cannot understand how that equates to or supports development. If it was reducing the recurrent expenditure (as was expected because of the collapse of all democratic institutions) while increasing the capital expenditure and the budget in general, then that would have been a good thing. Or even leaving the budget as it was and reducing the recurrent expenditure wouldn't be bad. But just reducing the budget by 15% for the sake of reducing it is a very bad economic policy IMO.
Maybe you can explain better why he did it and how it translates to increasing development and the socioeconomic status of the populace.

PoliticsRe: A Buhari / Fashola Candidacy 2015 by jedisco(m): 8:05am On Sep 20, 2014
LeSaint: Your position on Fashola strengthens the proposal - or do you know that he'd be offended by an offer of a VP ticket?
On your second point, you speak for yourself. Buhari is known across the length and breadth of this country, and he has come the closest to winning than any other opposition candidate. Even in the minds of the PDP juggernauts, the mention of the name Buhari raises palpitations, because of what he is known to stand for - see the analysis made earlier above by beopened.
Take someone like me; a Xtian Ibo, late 50s, apolitical (at least non-partisan), but wants what's best for my country and for my children going forward. I have seen and lived through a lot, including the Buhari/Idiagbon era, and I have no doubt in my mind that we have narrowed our problems down to bad governance (to wit, indiscipline and large scale corruption). I also know that no one has all his being focused on tackling this problem more than Buhari does. It should make no difference if he is Fulani, or Tuareg,or prays to a tree or doesn't pray at all, as long as we are assured of his devotion to that singular task.
And there are signs you'll know someone is so denoted in that regard; you'll see it is his demeanor, in his lifestyle, his acquisitions, his pastimes, his family's public profile. Fashola may reflect good governance, but he hasn't acquired comparable reputation in that regard. He is a bit of an establishment man. But he has lots of other complementing qualities that would make the duo dynamite.
Granted, the current Northern insecurity hasn't helped Buhari's public perception, but i tell you, if we miss the opportunity again this time, we'd miss the train for a long long time.
Pity a lot of people are beclouded with sentiments, emotions, unfounded perceptions and prejudices. But, unfortunately, the only ones who seem to see through it all are the very perpetrators of bad governance.
1. My position on Fashola is simple. He is the best APC has to offer and any permutation that puts some other person before him because of some sentimental reason is to me illogical. I care less who runs as the VP. Fash would even be more useful to this country as a minister than as the VP which is merely a ceremonial position.

2. I still don't get it how after all this time, some people cannot understand Buhari's position. Buhari is too polar to win a national election in Nigeria. The reasons why he lost 3 elections have only grown bigger. Yes, he would get 12 million votes in the NE and NW but another 22 million against him in all other parts of the country. His best chance at winning was in 2011. Right now, his best use would be endorsing Fashola in the far north. Virtually any other candidate even Atiku would win Buhari in a national election.

3. Portraying Buhari as our saviour is illogical to common sense. I am a young Nigerian and I find it downright insulting that someone is asking me to bring back someone who contributed to putting Nigeria in its current state. We should be looking forward not backward. Most of the problems we are having in Nigeria today are things that would have been sorted out long ago if democracy was allowed to reign. I really don't want to delve into the Buhari issue so I would leave it at that.

4. Lastly and most importantly, you should be proud of who you are and not go around claiming another ethnicity. That is another low in itself. Even Igbo kids born and bred in Lagos who have never been to the East of even speak a single word in Igbo know better than to refer to themselves as Ibos, talk more of someone who claims he is an almost 60 yr old man. Dude be proud of who you are. It seems you're new in NL for you to still be using a tactic that failed woefully in 2011. Go back and read threads of people who claimed they were from the East and living in diaspora and they've come back and have won their whole local government for Buhari. Well we know how all that ended.
PoliticsRe: A Buhari / Fashola Candidacy 2015 by jedisco(m): 11:46pm On Sep 19, 2014
It's funny when people say Buhari/Fashola ticket and ask people to be logical all in thesame sentence.
The fact is that they are far from being logical.

Fashola remains the best APC has to offer and any permutation that doesn't put him as the candidate is in itself illogical.

Secondly, the idea that Buhari would ever win a presidential election in this country is even more illogical. But I would leave it at that.

If you are asking people to be logical, try and be logical yourself. If you think Fashola who is APCs best candidate shouldn't run because of some illogical reasons, then don't question anyones resolve to vote Jonathan.
EducationRe: Reasons You Will Always Hate Medical Students by jedisco(m):
@op
You sound like one of the countless others who really got frustrated in their pursuit of studying medicine. The fact is that medicine just like any other course, has its peculiarities- one of those being the high cut-off which obviously means many will not make the cut. And truth be told, on the average, studying some courses are more likely to result in a higher paying job than others for those who would seek jobs (like I said, on the average).

What I usually tell people who didn't make it into medicine is to get settled soon enough on whether they really want to and have the ability to study medicine. A negative answer to any of the above simply means the person should begin to like the course he/she got and plan out his/her life as studying medicine does not guaranty success at all. Those who have the zeal to push through can always come back and retry just like you did.
I also advise them to take their eyes off medicine and other health related courses as going on to study any other health related course after unsuccessfully trying to get medicine would just put the person in a state of perpetual bitterness and envy even after graduation except if the person begins to like and be truly proud of the course he/she eventually studied.

I would advise you to get the BSc as the SON cert is much more inferior to the university certificate. Remember it's a diploma. It's like comparing OND and a Bachelor's degree.
I know many nurses with RN and the likes who are currently going for BSC. Some teaching hospitals employ only BSc now.

The choice is yours.

I keep seeing people mentioning this stuff, but I've been skeptical. Maybe you folks can help clear my doubts

For those who usually use it, please which shipping method do you use and how fast and reliable is it?

what about the free shipping or the ones of less than $2? How reliable are they and how long will it take for the product to arrive cos DHL is rather expensive especially for shipping few items.

Lastly, it seems its a listing of different stores. Can I combine different items and ship together. At least, it should be cheaper that way
PhonesRe: Advice Needed: Blackberry Z30 Or Samsung S5/samsung Note 3 by jedisco(m): 11:45pm On Jul 18, 2014
As an owner of the note 3, I would advise you get an iPhone 5S (if money is not the problem).
Android phones and especially Samsung phones in particular have alot of added stuff, some are useful while alot are gimmicks. But the iPhone is a device I'm sure you would fall in love with right from it's design to its ease of operability.
