As a people I frankly think that we have degenerated rapidly going by what has been happening in Benin city of late.University graduates are expected to be found worthy both in learning and character before being admitted to either The Bachelors degree or what ever academic qualification the graduate has pursued. The terribly base and profane language that has been spewing out of the mouths of so called university graduates from our institutions connote much indeed.Just take enough pains to go through the Nigerian Observer Opinion pool of late to enable you understand the gravity of the debasement we have been suffering.

The quality of our thoughts will determine the state of our development. From the look of things we seem to be more interested in our stomach and genitals and not how to make our mark on the international arena by meaningfully contributing towards the advancement of the human race. The cult graduates are nothing but an unadulterated product of the Nigerian society.A Greek philosopher whose name I can't remember once said that a people get the kind of leadership they deserve. If cult members have infiltrated positions of authority in the country, the fault is in ourselves , not in our stars. From the look of things, there is no section of the society today that has not been contaminated by cult members.Be it those recruited from the institutions of higher learning or the traditional cults. It seem to be a thing of pride for a man in a position of authority to be identified with a cult or some thing of the sort, such as the so called social clubs and societies. This has in no small way responsible for the advancement of mediocrity and backwardness in our society, among other terribly serious things.

As a people, I believe that if we are to see the promised land, we must be prepared to take the bull by the horn squarely. The present socio political order of the country will lead us nowhere than unmitigated disaster.Benin City of the 60s is certainly radically different from what it is today.I am not suggesting that we should stagnate.No.That is not my wish ,my love for customary practices and traditions notwithstanding.

Let us take a good look at the Islamic Republic of Iran .Before 1979 when the Shah was in power, the country was virtually like modern day Nigeria, probably the only difference is the huge military hardware at their disposal. After their revolution in '79, the entire nation was radically transformed and today, The Islamic Republic of Iran is a Nation to be feared even by the United States.

For the present predicament we find ourselves to be remedied, some people must die for others to live.Christians believe that Jesus died to enable those who believe in Him to gain everlasting life. But those to die for The country to be cleansed will lay their lives not in the manner of Christ, but in the fashion of what took place in Ghana when Jerry Rawlings was in Power. If what goes up will surly come down, why can't what took place in Ghana be repeated in Nigeria? If vultures are meant to be eaten as food our ancestors would have exhausted them.If the present moral degeneration we are been subjected to by our so called ruling class is the normal standard way of behavior, it should have been an integral part of our heritage.

Today, we live in fear of bondage and bondage of fear but, our salvation lies in our hands. We have the option to either make or mar our future and our very existence.I am of the point of view that the present ruling class in the country must be toppled if we are to see the promised land. We should be tired of saying that we are tired.

I would want to commend you for your beautifully worded comment on the very sad situation in Benin City of recent. The criminals who call themselves cultists are neither undergraduates students nor graduates. They are the thugs of one political party or the other whose illegal means of livelihood have been taken from them.
However, you most times end your comments with certain thoughts that are not congruous with democratic principles.Iran you gave example with is not democratic. The leaders are both despotic and theocratic, therefore, not good enough as a country to be used as a standard.
You appeared to be happy the other day with the kidnap of the registrar of the ICE.That too is not n line with civilised principles.

Robbers take over in Ibadan: Woman shot during bank robbery dies at UCH - Raid Akobo for six hours uninterrupted - Remove worshipper’s wedding bands at Sunday service - Hunt fun spots

Worhippers at a popular church around Bashorun had unwanted visitors early one Sunday morning as they arrived for the 7am service. The youthful armed robbers welcomed them with black bags, with which they collected cash, wedding bands(rings), wristwatches and hand sets as if it was offering time.
Gov Adebayo Alao-Akala, Oyo StateA fortnight ago in Abuja, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, praised the efforts of his men in stemming the tide of crime in Nigeria. However, residents of Ibadan, Africa’s third largest city, certainly don’t agree with the police boss, as Tayo Lewis reports.

Act One, scene one:
THE gathering was one of the usual jolly good fellows. Dateline was December 31, and with just a few minutes to round off the year 2008, it was just fair that one downed a few cups to wish it goodbye.

The chapel was a few yards away, so, why not? After this sin, it was just a matter of walking the few yards to church and asking God for forgiveness, and then his protection, for the new year.

Suddenly, a jeep turned in. Such brands of vehicles were not exactly novel here, being a highbrow area. The fellas did not even take too much notice of the black jeep. Bala’s suya and the bottles on the table completely enthralled them. That was before they saw things that looked like nozzles in the hands of the five guys who alighted from the jeep.

One of the victims recounted their ordeal: “The one that first approached us was a short fellow. He wrapped the pistol in his hand with a piece of red cloth. He would be around 24 years. In fact, none of them could be up to 30 years old.

“Initially, I had sized him up and brokered the idea of taking him on when he ordered us to lie down. He then looked at me and said, “Egbon, se e fe se new year ni? (Elder brother, don’t you want to celebrate the new year?) I will shoot you. Lie down!”

The Arnold Shwarznegger complied immediately and was frisked and dispossessed of his three expensive handsets, crisp naira notes, hand and neck chains. In fact, he recalled that one of the armed felons said, “Alaaye, new notes le ti e nlo.”(Big man, so you spend mint notes?)

“The fact of Power Holding Company of Nigeria’s effectiveness in holding on to light in no way contributed to the efficiency of the armed robbers that night. The Lister generator powering the facility was screaming away, and so the noise effectively shielded whatever protestations the victims of the robbery might have wanted to put up.

They however met their match in the streetwise, bulky barman. As the first robber showed his head in the area where the barman was sequestered, a bottle came whistling in the air. The robber dodged and discouraged his co-adventurers from making further progress. That was how they fled that leisure facility.

It is not only in PHCN that the fiends have a friend. A medical consultant (names withheld) at the University of Ibadan did not have portable and when his brother came calling, he thought it was a good idea to go water-hunting. He drove his own car filled with water kegs while his wife’s car was loaded with another set of kegs. The idea was to fill every available container with water to assist his doctor wife who was nursing a baby. Since babies usually don’t realise they are in Nigeria, where water is not easy to come by, useful water, that is, they require so much water to keep clean. The Yoruba have a peculiar way of saluting families nursing a baby.E ku owo l’omi (congratulations as you dip your hands in water). Pardon the transliteration.

The two men headed towards Bodija and found water at last. On their way back home, the doctor wondered what the hell was keeping his brother waiting so long at the security post. He got down to find out what was amiss. A hitch hiker was sitting with his brother in front. “If you want to hike a ride into the premises why don’t you allow him move further in and park properly?”

These were the words that froze in his throat as he discovered he was facing a hole. He was ‘safely’ led back to his own car, which was parked behind his wife’s being driven by his brother. They (the armed robbers) released his brother to him after he had released his handsets and the keys to his wife’s Honda car to them, and drove away in his wife’s car.

The hospital’s security staff could not help the two brothers as the robbers had already ‘rocked them to sleep,’ temporarily, in their duty post.

There is something mysterious about the UCH scenario. The doctor’s car was driven to the house of a senior colleague in Bodija who had a better car. The Honda was exchanged for the senior colleague’s touche automobile and the following morning, the police gleefully announced the recovery of the consultant’s car after, of course, a rigorous pursuit of the fleeing robbers. Someone please praise the Lord.

Of all recreation centers in Ibadan, there is one around Sabo, and another around Jericho, where the elite go. Those who patronised these joints were of a very high calibre and armed robbers dared not mess around there. That was once upon a time. As someone who got shot at one of these two joints last week has since found out. He is still in the hospital, trying to recover from injuries sustained through gunshots.

A young lady was not that lucky. Titi, a fomer secretary with the Nigerian Tribune got hit by stray bullets the day armed robbers raided First Bank, Oluyole, Ibadan. She died last Friday at the University College Hospital after futile attempts to save her life

When the felons had arrived at the Sabo club, someone thought it would be a good move to put out the light so the robbers would be confused. The result was chaos as the robbers decided to adopt the philosophy of the mice. If a mice can’t eat the beans, then it will waste it.

The robbers started sporadic shooting as they beat a retreat. In the confusion, the big man got shot.

Act Two:
Scene two:

Some five buddies were within an office in a hotel in town. There was a small disagreement between two friends which the others were trying to settle. In their account, there was no girl anywhere in the enclosure. Then, suddenly, they saw a hole coming in through the door.

A body soon followed the barrel and one of the occupants of the room , obediently, without being asked, laid all he had, or rather, almost all he had, on the nearby table. Another young man also came in with his own version of a hole with a long tail.

The five men were told to lie down and this they obediently did. The owner of the facility, a fairly elderly man, told the young men to behave themselves as no one in that room had money on them. One of the disrespectful young men banged the proprietor’s head on the wall. Maybe to correct its malfunctioning, in his opinion. He told the man old enough to be his father, “Lie down and keep quiet, or I will waste you.”

At the end of the day, they went away after ransacking their victim’s pockets, collecting their phones and other valuables. One of the married men could not remove his wedding band, so it was abandoned - but they got better gold in his pocket. He had on him N85,000, with which he was going to buy a new phone before someone persuaded him to stay a while at the fun spot.

For now, residents of Ibadan keep wondering when it will be uhuru. The robbery gangs no longer restrict their calls to the fun spots: a man who was cleaning his car at a car wash recently had it taken away from him cleanly with a pistol. An elderly Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon was in his house eating breakfast wen he received unwanted guests. Aside from what they left with, they left him with a bullet lodged in one of his legs.

At Akobo, robbers now operate with impunity. It is as if they have drawn up a roster and go from one house to the other, leaving sorrow and tears in their trail. There was an occasion when they were reported to have operated for six hours unchallenged.

Worhippers at a popular church around Bashorun had unwanted visitors early one Sunday morning as they arrived for the 7am service. The youthful armed robbers welcomed them with black bags, with which they collected cash, wedding bands(rings), wristwatches and hand sets as if it was offering time.

Many residents now watch their backs, and take another drive down the street if they think a car is trailing them. Otherwise, if you get careless, as you drive into your gate, these young men drive in after you in any car of their choice.

The Oyo State Police Command seems helpless. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ms. Bisi Okuwobi had, on several occasions, insisted that the police were doing all they could to stem the tide of armed robbery in the city. She blamed the seeming lack lustre performance of the police on lack of infrastructure, such as electricity and much needed equipment. She insisted that policemen were not angels and neither were they on a strike-action, saying that the cooperation of the public was badly needed in the fight against crime. She however reiterated the statement that the crime situation in the state was being controlled.

For the citizenry who are being pumelled everyday, the question is: When will we be able to sleep with both eyes closed in Ibadan?

The Federal Government has been charged to take immediate steps to stem the spate of ethno-religious violence in the North or risk violent disruptions of the democratic process.
National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor who issued the warning after extensive consultation with fellow Christians especially the youths also appealed to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to urgently call to order religious fundamentalists like former Zamfara State governor, Alhaji Ahmed Sani Yerima, a senator of the Federal Republic, whose “unguided and inflammatory utterances are capable of plunging the nation into crisis of unimaginable proportion.”

A statement signed by Pastor Oritsejafor himself and released in Lagos at the weekend, stated that unless the Federal Government takes urgent steps to arrest the growing trend of religious intolerance to settle some perceived political scores, Christian leaders in the country may no longer be able to restrain youths in their fold, from taking reprisal measures to defend themselves.

In his first official reaction to the recent Bauchi religious riots-the second in two years-the PFN helmsman who just returned from a trip to Israel warned that the mindless and brutal killing of innocent Nigerians in the name of religion was no longer acceptable to the leadership of PFN.
Pastor Oritsejafor noted that certain religious bigots had continued to undermine the numerous appeals of the good natured Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who had travelled the length and breadth of the country, suing for peaceful co-existence.

The cleric who recently hosted PFN’s 10th biennial conference, recalled that on numerous occasions he had traversed the country in company of the Sultan to appeal for calm and religious tolerance, stressing that they were together in Bauchi on December 31, 2007 for a similar mission after that year’s violent crisis.
According to the PFN boss, the governor promised the NIREC delegation in the presence of the current Secretary to the Federal Government, Alhaji Yayale, who was then the Minister of Defence, that he would pay compensation to the affected victims of that crisis.

The firebrand Pastor and founder of Warri-Delta -State-based word of Life Bible Church lamented that he was yet to hear of any such compensation to any of the victims of the 2007 violent crisis, pointing out that both Christianity and Islam preach love for one another, peace and tolerance. He therefore wondered why certain persons should kill fellow human beings who were created by the same God.
“It is preposterous for a human being created by God to burn down places built for the worship of the same God. Not even in the Middle East,” Oritsejafor lamented, adding that it leaves a sour taste in the mouth to learn that God’s creature will kill another creature of God in the name of religion.

Said he: “After consultation with Christian leaders, especially the youths who rolled out frightful statistics to show how many persons that have been killed in different parts of the North since 1999, I am left with no other option than to make this passionate appeal to the Yar’Adua Administration.
“They told me in tears that after losing their commercial ventures to some mindless religious bigots, they believe they can no longer continue on this path of turning the other cheek because they had been beaten on both cheeks.

“The youth leaders vowed to employ any means available to defend themselves their places of worship and their businesses in any part of the country,” he said, adding “we have turned both cheeks and we have no other option than to defend ourselves in any part of this country whenever we come under attack again.”
He warned the Federal Government to move fast because a “drastic problem requires a drastic solution, because the state we are gradually gravitating towards, can only remind us of the events that lead to the last civil war in 1966.

“Please save this country from imminent danger of a major religious war, which if begins might be too catastrophic for the nation as a whole,” he pleaded with the political class, who he accused of always instigating the unemployed youths of the North to foment trouble.
“If you love this country so much and you must fight to defend it through religious wars, then bring your children from oversees to carry cudgels, arms and petrol,” Oritsejafor counselled northern politicians who often capitalize on the mass illiteracy and poverty in the North to mobilise the youth to foment trouble at the slightest provocation.

Stating that enough is enough of this killing in the name of the Lord, he drew attention to the PFN communique which warned against plunging the nation into a religious war that will be difficult to quench, stressing that the current resentment on the part of Christians arises from the fact that nobody has ever been prosecuted for past religious crisis.

“We, therefore, strongly appeal to the Federal Government to, as a first step to the resolution of the protracted crisis, all identified sponsors and perpetrators of past crisis in different parts of the country must now be brought to justice in the interest of peaceful co-existence.
“In addition, all laws in parts of this country that impede people from their constitutional rights to freedom of worship must be abrogated with immediate effect. The right of Nigerians to freedom of faith is clearly spelt out in the 1999 constitution and any other enactment that is contrary to that, especially with regards to indigeneship issues should be immediately expunged from our statutes,” he added.

He said there are ominous signs that all is not well with the state of the nation and “the earlier we do something to tame the orgy of religious intolerance in parts of the North, the better for us all as a nation.”
He stressed that history will hold the current leaders accountable for whatever happens to the corporate existence of the nation, if there is no religious harmony in a secular state like Nigeria. He pointed out that we must stop these killings in the name of religion.

He also recommended that states which play host violent religious riots must be made to rebuild burnt places of worship and pay adequate compensation for lost lives and vandalised business premises.
“A stitch in time,” he said “saves nine. Nigeria reputed to be the most religious nation on earth has played host to the highest number of religious uprisings which have claimed thousands of innocent lives.”
He advocated a return to the moral instructions in schools, pointing out that current acts of cultism at all levels of our educational system in the country was no longer acceptable.

It was Basil Davidson, the author of the classic, The Blackman’s Burden, Africa and the Curse of the Nation-State who compared contemporary African leaders with their forebears who sold millions of their compatriots into slavery.
Davidson had harsh words for present Africa leaders.

He called them pirates in power. Indeed, except for some exceptional leaders like the late Julius Nyerere, Kwame Nkrumah, Modibo Keita, Ahmed Sekou Toure, Amilcar Cabral, Nelson Mandela, Leopold Senghor, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Samora Machell, Thomas Sankara, Aminu Kano, Muritala Muhammed, the majority of African leaders in the Post-colonial era are indeed pirates and flops in power.

As Jean Francois Bayart has argued, politics, for majority of African rulers, is politics of the belly.
While European, Asian and American leaders toil day and night for their citizens and thus, impact on their lives, African leaders have turned Africa to killing fields. From Darfur in Western Sudan to Harare in Zimbabwe, through Somalia, Chad and even Nigeria, the story is the same. It is the sad story of corruption, nepotism, tribalism, sit tightism, immorality and indiscipline perpetrated by the African governing elite.

You can hardly point to ten out of the fifty-three African countries today that are well managed. We can point to Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Arab states of Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Libya and a few other where the lives of the citizens have been transformed in socio-economic terms. Event at that, we must be careful in our claims because some of the states, north of the Sahara, have refused to grant their citizens the rights to choose their leaders. Ghaddafi of Libya and some other African Arab leaders have repeatedly argued that Africa has nothing to do with participatory and competitive democracy.

African ruling political parties hardly loose presidential elections. This lack of respect for the ballot box, the rule of law, citizens rights and independence of the judiciary all combine to subvert democratization and good governance in most Africa. With the poverty of governance in Africa, development, as the late erudite scholar, claude Ake contended, is yet to commence in Africa. Ake cannot be faulted. Where is the development in Africa? Where is the technology in Africa? Even agriculture which was the continent economic mainstay prior to the integration of the African countries for greener pastures from minerals like gold, diamond, oil, limestone and others. The gluttonous exploration of African minerals by African leaders in collaboration with the priests of international capital brought about the phenomenon of resource curse to several African countries. Nigeria is a classic case of œresource curse, where oil, which has generated well over 800 billion dollars in the last forty years, has turned a curse rather than a blessing in the oil bearing states of the Niger Delta. It is reported that well over 400 billion dollars of this oil money is idling away in foreign accounts of
successive Nigerian rulers and their hangers-on.

This phenomenon of œlootocracy_ is not peculiar to Nigeria. It is a dominant factor in African politics. Mobutu Seseko of Congo Democratic Republic, Emperor Bokassa of Central African Republic, Idi Amin Dada of Uganda, Frederick Chiluba of Zambia and countless African leaders were reported to have defrauded their countries of huge financial resources. In all this, it is reported that well over sixty percent of the seven hundred million Africans live on less than a dollar per day. In spite of the enormous human resources, mineral resources, vast arable land, rich in flora and fauna, Africa is reported to contribute less than two percent to the total volume of world trade. The failure of governance in Africa has generated crises all over the continent since most of African countries attained independence, starting from the late 1950s. Today, Darfur, in Western Sudan, Somalia, Chad, Ivory Coast,

even Nigeria is experiencing crisis of various dimensions and magnitudes. Darfur crisis has been described as genocide by the international community. African Union has not been able to stop the killings of children and women in Darfur by the El-Barshir Arab-led government in Khartoum. Somalia is almost a lost case, a completely failed one.

So, when muammar Ghadaffi, the unelected leader of Libya for forty years now and some other dreamers in the African Union (AU) boisterously talk about the United States of Africa, one is tempted to dismiss the current chairman of the African union and his fellow dreamers as merely playing to the gallery. They dont and can never believe in what they are proposing. Ghadaffi himself knows that there is no basis for a United States of Africa now. He delights in cheap publicity, deluding himself as the lion of Africa.

First, what is Ghadaffi impression of the Negroid African? What has been Ghadaffi position in all cases of negroid-Africans and Arab-Africans conflict? What was his position in the Chadian crisis? Indeed, what is Ghadaffi Position in the on-going Darfur genocide in which the Arab-African led-government of Omar El-Barshir in Khartoum has been decimating black Africans of Darfur in Western Sudan since 2003 when some groups in Darfur opted for self determination? A dispassionate analysis of Ghadaffi positions in all cases of Arab-Africans and Negroid Africans confrontations reveal Ghadaffi as a committed Arab nationalist, who want to dominate the rest of Africa with his rabid Arabism. His self righteous claims to Pan-Africanism is suspicious. What I expect from Negroid African leaders is to remain constantly suspicious of Ghadaffi crusade for a United States of Africa. Ghadaffi Six million people in Libya cannot be whatever imagination become the leader or savior of Nigeria 140 million people in the guise of Pan-Africanism. This brand of Pan-Arabism cannot serve the interest of black Africans.

Why it is true that Pan-Africanism made meaning in the 1950s and the early 1960s under the leadership of characters like the great kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Nigeria Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmed Sekou Toure of Guinea, Modibo Keita of Mali, George Padmore, William Dubois and other great African Patriots and Africanists, I sincerely call on the Nigerian authorities, intellectuals and the civil society to be ware of this new found wave of Pan-Africanism currently being championed by Ghadaffi and his collaborators.

Ghadaffi may have opened up to the West, he is yet to show respect and love for the black race. Reports are bound on how the Libyan authorities manhandled and disrespected Nigerians and other black Africans in the past and even in present times. Ghadaffi may have assisted some small African countries with Libya rich oil resources in the past, the point is that such assistance have been exploited by the Libyan strongman to dominate the African Political space. More so, political divisions in such countries have been deepened by Ghadaffi involvement in the domestic affairs of such countries like Chad.

Christianity EtcRe: Deaconess - What Qualify A Woman As One? by JJYOU: 10:35am On Mar 02, 2009
Bleep-You:
2 TIMOTHY 2:11

It states a woman should be silent in Church;

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection"

2 TIMOTHY 2:11

"But i suffer not a woman, nor to usurp authority over the man but must be SILENT cheesy

Corinthians 14:34

Let your women keep silent in Churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but they are to be submissive as the law says" cheesy

Corinthians 14;35

"And if they want to learn something, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is shameful for women to speak in churches" grin

Now what would make a woman speak in church talkless of her becoming a so called pastoress or deacon when the "god almighty jehovah" has commanded that women should shut up in churches because it is very very shameful to speak in churches grin

How can i ever respect a so called female pastor whatsoever when the bible has said that she has to be submissive to a man to shut up and learn from him.

All these hypocritical churches that have women as pastors and those clowns that worshipped Bimbo Odukoya are all going to Hell because they have defiled the words of god grin

And when i say the bible is a very very daft and foolish book, christian apologists will be angry. No other book would encourage such blatant chauvinistic thinking and subjugation of women, yet women are the densest fanatics of this stupid book called the bible!

What a freaking Mind job! grin

Help! We quarrel always
By KEMI ASHEFON
Published: Sunday, 1 Mar 2009

EUGENIA still can‘t explain why she will always quarrel with Jack, her boyfriend of three years. ”We are always at each other‘s throats and he has this caustic tongue,” she says. ”I will not deny the fact that I am not a patient person either. Why should I be patient with him anyway? He is not my husband and I don‘t even think that I can marry him. Last month, we went for a friend‘s wedding and I was busy helping with food and drinks. By the time I took a plate of food to Jack, where he sat, he was so furious. He said I was not bothered about him and could not take care of him at a party. Before I could apologise, he started abusing me in front of other guests. Though I tried to control myself, I never bothered going back to where he sat and I went home straight without telling him. My fear is this quarrel. If two persons are in love, I am sure they will not quarrel.”

Help! We quarrel always

By the time Mike returned from his trip to Makurdi, he knew he was facing another round of quarrel from Kike, his fiancée. ”I forgot to buy the Kilichi (dried meat) she sent me. I was so busy that I forgot about it as I headed for Lagos,” he says. ”Kike came to pick me at the airport and guess her first question? ‘Where is my Kilichi?‘ It was at that point that I remembered and I apologised. You would not believe all that she said – I never cared for her, I didn‘t buy things for her and I was selfish. I kept quiet in the car and by the time we got home, she was more aggressive.

”She went to the room, packed her things and went home. I was so tired that I could not just beg her to stay behind. We had always been like cat and mouse, but I am sure Kike loves me. Though I also love her dearly, I wonder why we were always quarrelling. Naturally, I hardly talked but with this girl I talk and get angry by the second. She drives me crazy with her ideals, ideology and her ingratitude. We quarrel over diet, clothes, friends, rent and business ideas. How can a girlfriend tell me to float a sachet water plant? Before she even finished, I retorted that she was a village woman. To all I said, she said nothing. It was some hours later that Kike replied me and said that she regretted ever knowing me. She said she wished she had agreed to date my friend (he was the first to ask her out). Even while at play, we could be laughing this second but the next, we had started abusing each other. I am just tired.”

This is the same for Kemi. Kemi says, ”I was joking with Albert, my boyfriend, about his briefcase and a quarrel ensued. I thought he was joking, but when I saw the anger, I kept quiet. Albert will always get angry at every joke I shared. There was a day he was washing his car and I humorously said that he should wash mine too. You needed to have seen how he reacted – I called him a servant, I was rude and not even the last born in his family would ask him to wash a car. That irked me and I blew my top. I said all sorts of things and left his house. That was two weeks ago and that was the last I saw of him. He did not call, neither did I. I am tired of dealing with a man who behaves like a teenager. Anything wrong in sharing jokes with each other?”

Ambrose recalls that he only has peace in his relationship with Tenny, his girlfriend of two years only when in bed with her. ”We were always having an argument on one issue or the other,” he says. According to the 34-year-old man, he loves Tenny but he is afraid of any commitment. ”My mother said that a woman who you quarrel with as a girlfriend would not give you peace as a wife. In fact, Tenny did not like me talking about my mother,” Ambrose adds. ”If she was extremely happy about a million dollars, just mention my mother and would rake and end up with cents. She believed I was too attached to my mother and mentioned her too often. If we see each other five times in seven days, we would quarrel throughout. I have tried patience with her but I don‘t want her to talk about my mother anyhow and I would do anything not to have that happen again.”

Whenever She Annoyed Me, I Refused To Eat - Abideen

The Ladejis have been married for about 12 years. Abideen is the deputy director of town planning, Lagelu Local Government Area in Oyo State, while his wife, Basirat, is with the Federal Ministry of Education, Ibadan. In this chat with Azeezat Abdulrasheed, the couple are of the belief that a relationship built on love and faith in God will out last all challenges.

What do you do for a living?
I’m a town planner; I work with the local gov ernment as deputy director of town planning, Lagelu Local Government, Ibadan.

I’m with the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Secretariat, Ibadan.

How long have you been married?
About 12 years now; by March 30 this year it will be 12 years.

How did you meet?
It’s a long time now. We met through M.S.S., we were both members of the M.S.S, so we met regularly at programmes, but by and large, we saw each other, developed interest and we told the leadership, and they gave us the go-ahead.

What was the attraction?
Basically Islam, nothing more. It wasn’t for the beauty or dressing or anything like that. M.S.S has a style, most of our sisters dress the same way, so the issue of liking the way she dressed, for instance, did not come up. And at that point in time, there was training in MSS. Before you get to a point, you must have received a lot of training. She was well trained as one of the leaders then. If it were beauty, it sure would have faded by now. And the prophet said, marry for the religion, it will keep you together.”

She’s bold and he’s always there when it comes to the issue of Islam.

Did you have any courtship?
There was courtship, which was very brief. It was not more than five months. Actually, we wanted it to last for nothing more than two months, but because we had to get the consent of our families, it took longer.

After the marriage, were there any challenges?

Surely, there were, because there is no perfect relationship. But the only thing that will sustain a marriage is the fear of God. If your focus is on God, the marriage will last very long. If everyone understands his or her responsibilities in the house, as either the husband or the wife, you will get over whatever challenges may come your way. The major problem we had was the impression which feel around us have plant pregnancy. They felt that the moment you get married, you must get pregnant, at least within one or two months and when you don’t get pregnant, they tell you all sorts of things and stories. But within the second month, Allah answered us and eleven months after our marriage, we had our first child, on February 23rd, a year after our marriage.

How did your family react to his proposal to you?
Actually my father didn’t see anything wrong in marrying him; my sister was the problem. She felt he was old-fashioned, but she later got to know and like him.

The problem was that then, I was always travelling through MSS. I had this bag then, in which I always had my toothbrush and paste and some other travelling things. So, whenever the call comes for me to travel for Jihad, I just left since I was already packed. So, the sister felt I wouldn’t have time for her or take care of her. And, really, it affected us. The saving grace was that she was used to the system too, so she understood, though she could not travel, she had to stay back and take care of the house.

How many children do you have?
Five.

How have you been coping with children upbringing?
It’s only with the help of God, and I have a sister who helps me with house chores. My husband is also understanding. He does not force me to do things he himself cannot do, especially if I’m tired.

What do you do when she gets you annoyed?
Initially it was difficult. Whenever she annoys me, I would refuse to eat, but later, my father told me, look, you’re punishing yourself. You give money for the food, the woman will cook and you won’t eat, it’s your problem. So, I later realised that I was punishing myself and I decided not to do it again.

He won’t tell you he’s angry. But when you put food on the table and he doesn’t seem to have noticed for ten to twenty minutes, then you know there’s a problem. You may not know what the problem is, but you’ll be sure that something is wrong.

At those time when he does not eat, what did you do?
I just went to him and asked him what the problem is. If he tells me I apologise and we’ll settle things amicably.

How do you know she is annoyed with you?
She’s not easily annoyed, but whenever she’s unhappy about something, she tells you immediately. She’s always ready to apologise even when I’m wrong. But with time, we learnt to discuss issues.

Do you still travel as you used to?
Yes, I still travel but not as much as I used to. Before, I went for days, but now I try as much as possible to sleep at home. The nature of my job, with the call, presently, I’m the coordinator of Dawah Front in Oyo State and I equally belong to the Companion Association of Muslim Professionals. You know, when you’re responsible, anybody who has passed through the leadership of the MSS the muslim community will give you some responsibilities and by the time you merge these with your responsibilities at home and at work, it becomes too tight a schedule for you. So, sometimes you get home very late, but I still try to sleep at home, even if I get home very late.

At those times, when you’re at home, what did you do to make your wife and children feel your presence?
We watch TV together, at least the network news. I listen to my children. I try as much as possible to get home before they sleep. I ask them about their day, listen to tips from them, and with that, they’ll tell me what the challenges of the day had been and we discuss as a family. And on weekends, Sundays, we attend programmes together.

When he’s not around, the children occupy most of your time. At those times when he’s around, how do you create time for him?
When my husband is around, he normally works on the computer and the children are usually with him; I am normally in the kitchen, and the children sometimes come to relay messages from him. I later call the children and we go to him to discuss whatever he had said.

Apart from the children playing the role of intermediaries, both of you are usually on your own?
I sometimes go to his bedroom, but because he’s usually on the computer and I don’t like disturbing him, I go on to do something else.

Does it mean you don’t share the same bedroom?
No, we don’t share the same bedroom, though our bedroom are connected, and I can get to her room anytime I want and vice versa.

My husband has somethings he’s very sensitive about, and if we share the same room, the children would want to be free with his things and I can’t allow them to do that since we have different rooms; the children come freely to my room since I don’t have anything they can’t touch. They go to his room too but I have to watch their every move when they do.

Do you support him when he scolds his children?
Maybe I should answer that she’s the Margaret Thatcher of the house. She’s the one who beats everybody. I don’t like beating children, even when they’re wrong. I prefer to call them and talk to them, discuss their errors with them. I can only shout at children, I don’t beat.

At those times when she beats the children, what do you do?
I take my children away from her. By the time she gives them two strokes, I won’t allow them to take the third one.

Do you think you are helping the children to respect her, and at the same time making the children grow into disciplined and responsible adults?
I think its working for us. They know their mother will not take any nonsense, likewise their father. But they know that I will not beat them; I will only talk to them and talking is sometimes more effective than caning. But whenever I feel they need to be caned, I call on their mother, and when she picks up the cane, I run into my room.
