BigBashiru: Who is "healthcare sector". You need to realise this all boils down to individuals and their attitude to work.... the posts on the first page already said it all...
There's a limit on what governments can do..... individuals like doctors nurses etc must decide to change.
There's a limit to how much govt can act.
Nigerians aren't animals that they must always be compelled to do the right thing. On many occasions, Nigerian government had been advised to overhaul the leadership of our health sector starting from the minister of health, governing boards of healthcare institutions, leadership of tertiary healthcare institutions etc, but they seem to pay deaf ears to all the calls. Our health sector is currently managed in a cult-like manner where the medical doctors hijack all leadership positions despite not producing the desired results in terms of good healthcare delivery. They connive with their professional body; the NMA to destroy our health sector. They are placed in those leadership positions with no regards to whether they're qualified or not. Because all the medical doctors belong to the same association ie the NMA, they easily get away with professional negligence in those hospitals led by them. Only very few cases are brought to the fore. But when we have unbiased people who don't belong to same professional group, they'll run the system better. Discipline will be easier to instill and people will be on their toes to give their best. So, government should start by changing the leadership of the health sector. People from any discipline can be appointed ministers and Commissioners of health. They maybe required to have post graduate certifications in health administration and Management and some years of experience in health administration. |

Tedpgrass: Your submissions are recognised but not practicable in an environment such as Naija where basic core staff such as medics and nurses are in few numbers. That's why education is limited to these core clinical staff with regards to allergy history - taking and also minimising drug errors.
Yes in developed climates where abundant resources aid good undergraduate education (clinical pharmacokinetics alongside physiology) all through to practice as a clinical pharmacist.. and maintenance in the postgrad realm through regular specific CPD support...
But in Naija, where 1 person doubles up as the quasi-physician, nursing assistant, lab scientist and pharmacy technician,....... I don't see that role developing quickly in an equitable, consistent manner and also the macro-economics alongside patient's preference will not enable sufficient forward-planning to cement the vision.
A quick survey amongst most Naija pharmacists may also identify a lack of engagement in that direction. It's more work to their ever-growing burden with little money to show for it.
. Let's stop making excuses for a bad system and work towards righting the wrongs we have ignored for ages! Many pharmacists in the country are very much ready to practice clinical pharmacy but are being restricted by the bad system. Aside the approval of the Pharm.D program by NUC which aims to produce more clinically inclined pharmacists, some of these pharmacists have gone further to go through the West African College of Pharmacy at their own expense to acquire all the training they need to practice clinical pharmacy but rather than recognize and put them into use for the patient's gain, our hospital managers (most of whom are physicians) have continued to sideline them at the detriment of the healthcare-consuming populace. So, some of these pharmacists now practice pharmaceutical care in their private pharmacies. The government should make no mistake of being tight fisted when it comes to remunerating healthcare workers because health is wealth since only a healthy person can work and contribute to the nation's GDP. |

When some of us advocate for overhaul of our healthcare system, especially her management, it is because we care for a better and healthy nation. A system that we can be proud to bequeath to our unborn generations.
It is not like we can not join the bad system and make good money from it, but doing that will be akin to destroying the world rather than building it.
Anybody who had been following my posts on this forum will agree that I have been a great advocate of a revamped healthcare system in Nigeria. But some people may think that we are chasing clout or trying to monopolize the system. That is not the case!
Let's fix our health sector now! |

ibedun: Foolish idiotic thinking. Oyinbo land is tired of immigrants and are putting up barriers to stop you. The best bet is to develop our minds and improve our country! Life is not meant for ‘show off or I big pass you’ it is meant for cooperation and building together. Don't mind some Nigerians! They want to live at the mercy of whites yet they'll cry when the whites want to impose their values like homosexuality on them. The solution is to fight and get the government do the right thing by fixing our healthcare sector! Healthcare is very important because only a healthy person can work and earn a living. |

ecomalchemist: This is exactly how they almost killed my mum in 2016. Such a commercial enterprise with no care for human lives. They and Paelon are only mindful of money, money, money. Recent experience with Evercare shows they are different, more empathetic and willing to do extra without putting money first. What really has become of our people? No care even in the so called highbrow hospitals. They will be negligent yet asking for more money. The chicken has come home to roost. This can’t go on much longer. Check the management of Evercare, you'll discover that they have a different managerial organogram. It's not an all-physicians affair! When you have such unbiased management, discipline will be instilled. Everybody will be on their toes to give their best to the patients. This is what Nigerian governments have failed to do to put our healthcare system on the path of success. |

Tedpgrass: This is no complicated pharmaceutical care but just taking a basic allergy history and having at hand.. Phenergan injections / hydrocortisone injection / adrenaline with oxygen - - - contents of an emergency crash trolley.
Taking a careful medical history - conditions that run in patients and their families help
You often find that patients don't have a full knowledge of their own history or don't remember in some cases.
That's why wearing dog tags for those with allergies-- antibiotics, latex, even paracetamol - - is very good. Also those with diabetes, renal or liver failure.
. Incorporating pharmaceutical care helps! Before drugs are administered to patients, a clinical pharmacist should see the patient. They're in a better position to take those histories and brainstorm with the doctor to determine appropriate drugs for the patient's condition. Their jobs shouldn't just be to dispense drugs! Many lives would be saved if we start allowing pharmacists play pharmaceutical care roles in the wards like is done in the developed nations! You alluded to allergies as though allergic reactions are the only drug therapy problems we have. There are many DTPs and some can lead to patient's death! |

urchcoded: Naija hospitals smh similar thing happened to my dad. The thing is these people don't really care if you live or die. It's just business for them, they don't have one naira compassion. My dad was admitted on emergency (we paid the emergency admission money) they just dumped him on the bed for almost an hour, no doctor came to check him. My brother was vexed and started ranting, demanding to see a doctor.( The doctor was in his office oh, but said his duty was over so he was not obligated to see any patient) he told a nurse to give my dad some injections without asking of his medical history, the nurse just came and stabbed him with the injections and left, few minutes later, he couldn't breathe and was in such a bad state, we started calling for help oh. The nurse came and started soliloquizing audibly that assuming say she know say na winch we carry come, she for no even attend to am, saying all sorts of nonsense. We told her to do something oh as he was obviously reacting to the injections she gave him. She said she only did what the doctor told her to do and she's not responsible for anything. Oya go and call the doctor, she said the doctor is not on duty so he might not come. I already knew my father was asthmatic so I told her to put him on oxygen. She seemed confused and reluctant, she proceeded to carry the oxygen tank while telling us that she is not supposed to do this oh. She put him on oxygen and he gradually calmed down. That was the day I gave up on naija hospitals and health officials. The problem is that Nigeria is yet to start practicing pharmaceutical care the way it should be. Our doctors just assume that the few months they learnt pharmacology in school is enough to know all. Your dad obviously reacted to the injection he was administered. Thank God oxygen was available to help calm things down. Like in the case of this Omolara, I can bet anything to the fact that she reacted to whatever stuff that was administered to her during that initial hospital visit. We have had many similar cases in the past. A friend of mine died in that manner in an Enugu hospital. Someone who went to the hospital by himself and then immediately he was injected whatever, his condition worsened. BP dropped drastically and the next thing was death! A painful incidence it was! |

It is in a makeup of a real man to have the feel of conquering something. It's either we have men who are now timid, weak, non confrontational or a man who only believe that only money makes a man.
How would you feel as a man to walk up to a lady and before you say I like you, she is smiling and saying am all yours? Only girls that are secretly positioned to steal your destiny act like that, and this includes the Olosho mamas
In the real animal domineering kingdom male birds dance, show muscles and some even fight to death for the love of the female.
All I read are guys saying that they woo a girl just to fv*k...if that's all that you think about all day long as a gee then something is wrong somewhere. Money can get you a good damn s*x, a good looking cutie, a red lips curvecious anatos, but not a hearty love.

So far the private is accredited. You aren't meant to learn all in school. Basics for survival is all that's needed. We all learn on the job. Public schools live on past glories and making lives difficult for students shouldn't be a yardstick for measuring excellence. Almost all my seniors in private university medical schools are working abroad. Why weren't they denied the opportunity? They passed their exams!!! Please dead this talk of public medical schools better than privates. The truth remains what it is! I'll never refer any patient to a doctor I know that trained in a Nigerian private university!
