Health / New Sars-like Virus Shows Person-to-person Transmission by justaqad(m): 11:04am On Feb 14, 2013
LONDON (Reuters) - A third patient in Britain has contracted a new SARS-like virus, becoming the second confirmed British case in a week and showing the deadly infection is being spread from person to person, health officials said on Wednesday.

The latest case, in a man from the same family as another patient, brings the worldwide number of confirmed infections with the new virus - known as novel coronavirus, or NCoV - to 11.

Of those, five have died. Most of the infected lived or had recently been in the Middle East. Three have been diagnosed in Britain.

NCoV was identified when the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued an international alert in September 2012 saying a virus previously unknown in humans had infected a Qatari man who had recently been in Saudi Arabia.

The virus belongs to the same family as SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - a coronavirus that emerged in China in 2002 and killed about a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide. Symptoms common to both viruses include severe respiratory illness, fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the latest patient, who is a UK resident and does not have any recent travel history, is in intensive care at a hospital in central England.

"Confirmed novel coronavirus infection in a person without travel history to the Middle East suggests that person-to-person transmission has occurred, and that it occurred in the UK," said John Watson, the HPA's head of respiratory diseases.

He said the new case was a family member in close contact with another British case confirmed on Monday and who may have been at greater risk because of underlying health conditions.

The WHO said although this latest case shows evidence of person-to-person transmission, it still believes "the risk of sustained person-to-person transmission appears to be very low".

Coronaviruses are typically spread like other respiratory infections such as flu, travelling in airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Yet since NCoV was identified in September, evidence of person-to-person transmission has been limited.

Watson said the fact it probably had taken place in the latest two cases in Britain gave no reason for increased alarm.

"If novel coronavirus were more infectious, we would have expected to have seen a larger number of cases than we have seen since the first case was reported three months ago.

Tom Wilkinson, a senior lecturer in respiratory medicine at Britain's University of Southampton, said that if NCoV turned out to be like the previous SARS outbreak, it may prove quite slow to spread from one human to another.

"But it's early days to make any definite statements because viruses can change and mutate very rapidly, so what is right today may be wrong tomorrow," he told Reuters.

Based on the current situation, the WHO said all member states should continue surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections and investigate any unusual patterns.

"Testing for the new coronavirus should be considered in patients with unexplained pneumonias, or in patients with unexplained severe, progressive or complicated respiratory illness not responding to treatment," it said in a statement.

The WHO said on Monday that the confirmation of a new British case did not alter its risk assessment but "does indicate that the virus is persistent".

The British patient confirmed on Monday had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and is in intensive care in a separate British hospital, the HPA said.

Among the 11 laboratory confirmed cases to date, five are in Saudi Arabia, with three deaths; two are in Jordan, where both patients died; three are in Britain, where all three are receiving treatment; and one was in Germany in a patient from Qatar who had since been discharged from medical care.

The WHO said at this stage there is no need for travel or trade restrictions, or for special screening at border points.

deols: You are asking questions we may not know the answers to either.

I don't live in the North and so won't follow the crowd and say shariah is politicised. I would rather ask how widely it is practiced and if for every situation, it is applied.

then I will go on to try to know if it is done the right way when it is practised.

Shariah encompasees all of a Muslim's life. Most of the time, people only talk of the criminal law part of it. what about the laws of divorce, of inheritance and of finance. You don't take an aspect, leaving out the rest and still claim to be a shariah state IMO.

and talking the criminal law, it should only hold where there is social justice. You are not to call someone a thief and go ahead to cut their hands when you have failed to provide them what to eat. An example is a story making rounds on facebook of an indonesian shariah judge who rather than send a grandma who was charged for stealing to jail, he ordered everyone to pay for her upkeep.

surely you are not living in Nigeria.

Islam for Muslims / Sharia And Nigeria Politics by justaqad(m): 8:27am On Feb 13, 2013
Salam Alaykum
In philosophical, theological, or moral discussions, corruption is spiritual or moral impurity or deviation from an ideal. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement. Government, or 'political', corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for his or her own personal gain.
corruption is synonymous with the term NIgeria. civilised and morally upright countries deal with this syndrome harshly without mercy.but in Nigeria reverse is the case.corruption is condoned.corruption is only a crime when you steal in 4 figures.you disgrace the cabal an you would be punished severely there is no impunity for stealing in 4 figures.
when you exalt to 6 figures you will be revered and celebrated only Nigeria.
it is no news how petty thief are dealt with in Sharia states in Nigeria.though the punishments are harsh but serves as deterent to others.
Sharia in the north has been politicized, justice has been relegated.only the poor and weak face justice and punishment, the rich and influential are praised encouraged to do more.
what stops Sharia from Amputating the big shots that is holding Northern Nigeria to ransom?

Ayomivic: For the benefit of those who who does not understand the analogy in the above story, let me explaind the ideas behind the story. Infact the story is written to correct the sentiments of the atheist.the story have to do with atheists and christians alone. I don't intend to discuss anther riligion here because atheists need to acknowledge the existence of God before religion.

These are the words and analogies using in that story

Words used meaning

Father - God
mother - Prophets Atee - atheiests
Chris - Christians
Mansion - Earth
Companies and houses - what you and i achieved on earth
Letters - scripture
young man - our lord Jesus
map - gospel
another town - paradise
rich - power
disaster - periious days

actully, chrstians have never seen God before but we have strong faith that God is in existence. The prophets, the earth, ourself, are the proofs that God is in existence. What else do we need as evidence. What God demands from us is to always do good and to believe in him. How does these difficult fos us?I believe atheist regected God not because he did not exist but because he did not pemit them to do their will. For this they hate him. But God can never submit to the will of men, never. It is men that need to humble themself before God.

Islam for Muslims / Re: We Are Losing Our Identity To The Arabs by justaqad(m): 4:32pm On Feb 12, 2013

there is no clear cut aya confirming that arabic is the language of the hereafter. but ahadith confirms it to be so. I will leave you with the response of the eminent scholar of islam when confronted with the same question. I believe it captures my response succinctly.

"It is clear from the Qur'an that people shall freely communicate in paradise, but the Qur'an has not specified the language or the method in which people shall communicate with each other. However, there is a narrative ascribed to the Prophet (pbuh) in Tabraniy's Mu`jam al-Awsat[1], according to which the Prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said that the language of the people of Paradise shall be Arabic. If this narrative is considered to be reliable and accurately reporting the actual saying of the Prophet (pbuh), then one a Muslim would obviously be inclined towards believing that the language spoken by the inmates of Paradise shall indeed by Arabic.

Whatever the case may be, it should be appreciated that because of our limited perspective during the life of this world, we are not in a position to fully comprehend either the exact nature of the life in the hereafter or that of the rewards and punishment of the hereafter. After fully appreciating this point, we would naturally be more concerned and involved in rendering ourselves deserving of God's mercy in the hereafter and not be too concerned about the details and the exact nature of the life or the rewards and punishments in the hereafter."- Moiz Amjad

Again if this is the only fault you find in my reasons why you should consider yourself lucky for having Arabic name, then you should give the other reasons a thought.

Music/Radio / No More bosoms Showing In Grammy by justaqad(m): 12:06pm On Feb 09, 2013
CBS has issued a warning to all the musicians going to the Grammy’s. It’s “cover your behind” – literally. No ‘naughty parts’ showing!

The Grammy producers have issued a dress code for this year’s presenters and performers – or they won’t be allowed in. Here’s the new “wardrobe advisory.” “Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are all adequately covered. Thong-type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under-curves of the buttocks & buttock crack. Bare sides or under-curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible puffy bare skin exposure.”

The Grammys will be on a delay – just in case. And they are also warning people not to use bad words – even if it’s disguised in a foreign language.

If according to ur claim, Islamic name is different from Arabic name (though not admitting that there is anything as such) can u then prove to me why must an Islamic name be an Arabic name since u have stated that the two are not the same?

And this is where the problem is, would u use this verse to justify the bone of contention...? Does this give a specific obligation for us to bear arabic names? If u want to use this verse to justify ur claim, then every single muslim's name should be Muhammed. Any other name short of that does not conform to this verse and must be rejected cause such names were not of the prophet. U can not quote a verse away from the total context to justify a narrow claim. This is exactly the same kind of scenario that cultivate inspirations for the suicide bombers. Those guys also look for some verses to justify their belief haphazardly and they are genuinely convinced that they will automatically transition into heaven immediately after being shattered by a bomb that would kill several innocent others. Let's be careful in our thinking.

Trust me, it is not a big problem. Apart from that warning, there is the 2nd one you have not mentioned: To avoid being banned, please ensure that your post is not offensive to Islam. That warning may put a few people off but it has not prevented trolls and other uncouth posters from posting and getting banned by me.

beejaay: i am not a fan of religious forum but was a bit taken back when i saw the cation "A forum for Muslims to share their faith. Muslims only please, even the moderators are Muslims". are we muslims scared to have our faith challenged? are we scared of what non-muslims will ask and say about us? are we not promoting segregations among Allah's creations??
if we keep this forum open for only muslims, how are people looking for answers going to get since they cant come on this forum. i think the MODs should think about this and realize they are not doing justice to Islam. Christain forum is mixed with everyone and there faith are being challenged and re-solidifies

just my own observation

Islam for Muslims / Re: We Are Losing Our Identity To The Arabs by justaqad(m): 11:56am On Feb 07, 2013
seunajia: This thread is not about Afrocentrism or Yorubacentrism, is it OP? If that is your argument then I must tell you denouncing your Islamic name alone does not take you there. There are bigger issues! These are some of the areas I think you should look at.

1. Dressing. An African wearing 3-piece suits (with our weather? shocked), Jeans, Mini skirts etc. suffers loss of African identity. An African should rather wear our traditional clothes like Kembe, Adire, Alari, Iro ati Buba, kaftan etc.

2. Language. Most African languages are becoming extinct. It is not uncommon these days to meet Africans who command impeccable understanding of another man's language but can barely join or utter few words in theirs. Especially Nigerians! This aside from causing "loss of identity" is shameful and uncomplimentary. Take for example Nigeria, where English is our lingua franca. Why not start a crusade to stop this obvious aberration? CUm mental slavery.

^^There are so many other points, but these appeal to me more. I'll gladly contribute if you start a thread to discuss these issues.

Now, it is not wrong for a muslim to bear a name that is not Islamic in the Arabic sense of it, really, what Islam just enjoins is giving good names. As illustration, there are many Turkish, Iranian and middle Eastern names that muslims bear which are not "Arabic", but are good names with equally good meanings. This serves to quash the dogma that a name is only Islamic when it is Arabic.

Now my grouse with the OP lies here: As a muslim and someone who values my religious heritage, I am happy e.g that my parents gave me a name as Al-Ameen. Because as the Yorubas will say, oruko ma n ro omo.

It does not make me less if I adopt an Islamic name coupled with my numerous traditional names, heck! It portrays I'm a muslim who is proud to be identified as one. Why should I feel uncomfortable that I'm named after a prophet of Allah?

This is what my name Illustrates:

Abubakar Omobowale Balogun.

Abubakar: dude is a muslim cool
Omobowale: He's Yoruba cool
Balogun: He's the son of Balogun cool

I am a muslim and I'm proud of it.

like i have said, i prefer my deeds and actions identify me as a muslim.
chidi ogechi chukwudi is a muslim and he is so proud of it.

P.s.. some of your comments made sense i must admit... wink wink wink

andromida: @op This is a good awareness thread recently i was having this conversation with some Christians who believe bearing an English or Jewish name makes them better identifiable as Christians. I asked them why they feel God is naive since he created our tribal languages. The implication is subtle yet glaring if everyone embraces this foreign names sooner than later we will completely lose our identity a name is very significant. Nigerians must be proud of their heritage. We must not throw it away in the name of religion. However not everyone will have your kind of consciousness and so you must deal with them on the level of their enlightenment. Keep the flag flying a sustainable change must be from within.
