Most of the anti japa advocates do it just to feel good about themselves. How would you interpret a situation where someone wrote ielts 5 times so that he can migrate to Canada but didn't pass it. He is now an anti japa advocate telling people how cold is killing people in Canada. Did he realize cold is killing people in Canada after wasting money and time on ielts 5 times? Unfortunately people listening to him don't know he has ever written ielts once not to talk of whooping 5 times cos he won't mention that to them. |
@OP, There is a difference between Russian people and the Russian system and government. No doubt ordinary Russian people are nice. Ordinary Iranian people, north korean people, Afghanistan people are all nice. These ordinary people are like the rest of us, we just want to live a free life. What makes a good country is not just the people but their system cos even good people will not save you in a bad system. Let me remind you that you are in Russia so whatever you do, don't ever suggest that you don't support the Ukraine war. You have to support the war whether you like it or not else you will e putting yourself at risk. Top Russian elites who have opposed Putin or the war have been dieing like flies mysteriously either by poison or by jumping from their balcony, 2 of them just died in the last 4 days alone in India, check the news. The Russian state no dey play ooo. It is not like the west where you can openly say your mind against the state so be careful. There is nothing interesting about a one man powerful country where the citizens are constantly being watched by the state for any dissent. One would have thought that China, Russia Iran will be the top migration destinations among the Chinese,Iranians, Russians citizens since they are friendly nations but No , the citizens of these countries still prefer the western countries despite the bad relations among their countries. What does that tell you? |
Wicked China. They closed their borders and prevented their citizens from traveling in the last 3 years cos they think they will import the virus to China Now, they have been hit by covid outbreak, they have now opened their borders and allowing their citizens to travel out so as to infect those countries. I hope Nigeria will take action against travellers from China to avoid stories that touch. Dubious China. |
dupyshoo:If she opens a UK account on arrival, how would she be able to move the money out of naija? I'm beginning to realize that money transfer out of naija isn't as straightforward as I thought. |
missade:No she doesn't have a UK account. Can one open a UK account from Nigeria? If possible, then it will be a matter of opening a UK account and moving the money from her GTBANK dorm account. |
Compliments of the season everyone. Please how can someone going to the UK for studies this January transfer her money from a USD dorm account in Nigerian bank to pounds in the UK? Please what are the options? Carrying cash from Nigeria is out of the question as she is afraid of carrying huge amount of money. How can she navigate this money issue? Thanks |
ednut1:Nairaland is a place where someone can become anything they wish. Some people are millionaires and billionaires on nairaland but are poor in real life .A former church member wrote ielts 5 times, he could not pass it and he gave up He is now an anti japa crusader on social media. But then people who read his posts don't know he wrote ielts 5 good times. I pity those who can't make their own research and rely on nairaland people ![]() |
koife:Do you have Nigerian community in your area? Or are you the only Nigerian there? Do you attend a Nigerian church? Do you relate with fellow Nigerians? A Nigerian once told me he is lonely and bored in a city that has lot of Nigerians. When I probed him, it turns out that he doesn't want to associate with fellow Nigerians. In his words " I don't have time for Nigerians and their wahala " . I don't know about where you are anyway but what happens where I am is that the Nigerian community organize parties during this period where Nigerians gather and have fun. I and my family went to a party on Christmas day and I hosted one on boxing day. We have another one on Friday and Saturday hosted by different families. The last 2 days have been sweet. Lots of food, drinks, dance, games etc. 2 students even recreated the Townhall bala blue dance and got lots of dollars for the performance. So even in Nigeria, the fun does not come to you. You have to find it and make it happen. So my advice is know your city, know the Nigerians in your city. If the Nigerians in your city are the dull and individualistic type, you can be that person that bring them together and start forming a community that would start making things happen. Expand to other African countries like Ghana. I will be attending a Ghana organized get together on Sunday. They came to ours and we will go to theirs after all we are all Africans |
sukkot:Do Nigeria Lives matter in Nigeria? ![]() #endsars |
jimpix11:Sorry, why are you having credit? Are you being paid to use electricity? I don't get it. Please give us the full picture Modified: Na trouble you dey find ![]() |
jimpix11:This is not clear. Are you getting credit instead of debit in Canada? I don't get it. What you are showing in Canada is not realistic. Please explain Electricity in Canada will be cheaper anyway, Canada has abundant oil and gas compared to UK |
sukkot:You can live in the past if you want to. Since we can't change the past, We are more interested in today and the future. In the same America, a black man has become president. Let's try something. Go to Washington DC and carry a banner that says " F..ck Biden " Go to Beijing and carry a banner that says " F..ck Xi" Go to Moscow and carry a banner that says " F..ck Putin" Come back and tell us your experience ![]() |
sukkot:The so called " world order" led by the west can't be dismantled cos the alternative is even worse. In fact there is no alternative at the moment If the likes of China and Russia are serious about toppling the west, they should become a free country first. It is that simple. Do you know how many Russians Putin has poisoned? Uncountable. Criticize him and have yourself poisoned or die mysteriously. Do you know that in Russia today, there is a law that prohibits Russian citizens from calling what is happening in Ukraine "war" ? Civilians, soldiers on both sides are dying, cities are being destroyed yet one man force his citizens not to say it is war. Putin used the term "war" in the situation in Ukraine some days ago probably by mistake so let's see if he will go to jail as his law says. China too is the same brutal authoritarian leadership. China has being trying to force his territorial will on India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines etc cos it has power even after the international court of arbitration has ruled against them. China has set up illegal police stations across the world to monitor and harass Chinese citizens. In future, they will extend it to monitor and harass citizens of other countries who criticize the government. In my office in Toronto, Chinese citizens especially they ones with family members still in China have stopped talking about anything relating to China cos they are afraid. They no longer know who is a Chinese agent sent to monitor them. They don't trust anybody right now including us cos we could be paid agents. You have a country whose citizens are in fear and bondage and you think they wouldn't extend it to the world if they become the world super powers? China sanctioned Australia cos Australia called for the investigation into covid 19 that affected the whole world and China felt angry and banned Australian goods that sell to Chinese market. Imagine what China will do if it has more leverage across the world. As for China building trains in Africa, it benefits China more, it is not out of love for Africa. China provides the loan, use their companies and resources to execute it. The money they provide goes back to China. We end up owing them billions that didn't trickle down to our own economy. Unfortunately those trains are not viable enough to pay back those debt and China doesn't care. China will only build trains and ports in Africa but will never be interested in solving Nigeria power problem for instance and you know why? If Nigeria solves it's electricity problems, it will become a direct competitor to China as a manufacturing hub. A lot of companies in China would start moving to Nigeria cos Nigeria will become a cheaper alternative since we have lower labour cost compared to China. China knows this fact and that is why they would only fund projects that provide the illusion of development to the African politicians but will not address the issues that will make a massive impact in African development cos they also know that Africa can become the new China if certain things are in place. At the end of the day, there is no love anywhere in the world. Both the west, China Russia etc all care about their strategic interests and don't give a damn about you. They are only trying to use you to further their own strategic goals. It is now left for Africa to be wise and have it's own strategic interest too. But then, I'll still prefer the west at least for the fact that they have tried to create a free and open society that makes live more meaningful. Left for the likes of China and Russia, nairaland in which we are using to Express our opinion will not exist and even if it exists, it will work like Weibo in China where it is heavily censored and you can go to jail or be disappeared for saying something that authorities don't like to hear. |
Mrkumareze:Someone who has not lived in Nigeria reading your post would think electricity is free or too cheap in Nigeria. In Nigeria, you pay for electricity you didn't consume, you pay for half current, you pay to repair transformer when it spoils ,you pay for petrol used to fuel your generator to produce the electricity you will pay for, you pay the mechanic to repair the generator when it spoils, you pay for servicing of the generator. Oga, by the time you add all these costs, it has become more expensive than the UK you are yabbing. You have not even quantified the amount of stress involved in the generator wahala. |
ShaqFu:You see the problem. A lot of you don't understand how things work abroad and you just swallow what you read as fact. First of all, US does not sell fuel in litres ,they sell in gallons. So the money you quoted is for gallon not litres. Besides fuel prices are down now so it is cheaper now than months ago. Abeg no vex, what do you enjoy in Nigeria? You funny oooo |
Most stories we read on nairaland are half truths and incomplete stories. When I moved abroad and decided to do some factory hustling for few months while waiting for my school to resume, my colleague in Nigeria who I told I was working in a factory went and broadcasted it in my former company that I am now a factory worker and they mocked me. I became a case study of why not to quit ya job and move abroad. Thank God I didn't tell him my plans and allowed them to fool themselves. I had wanted to tell him but he burst into laughter immediately I told him I was doing a menial job in the factory so I kept my mouth shut. I went back to school, did an IT course, graduated and got a good professional job and my career took off. It took me 2 and half years from the day I left naija to when I settled professionally, I followed a plan and paid my dues. When my colleague saw my updates on LinkedIn, he was shocked and said I deceived him. But do you know he didn't go back to my former colleagues in the company to tell them I wasn't doing factory job after all? Right now, the only thing most people in my former office in naija know about me is that initial story that I'm a factory worker abroad and a lot of them will be using it as a basis to make their own decision. It is possible that some have created a nairaland thread of how their colleague left his job in naija and packing cartons in a factory abroad without knowing the full story and people will believe. This is the danger of stories you read on this forum, you only hear a part of the story. I only worked in factory for 3 months cos I didn't want to spend the money I came with from Nigeria. Why will I spend my hard earned naira converted to dollars when I can get a low key job that can pay my bills. I'm a humble man and I'm not trying to please anyone so why not. The summary of the whole thing is don't make decisions based on what you read here. Some of these stories are incomplete and not the full picture |
Talentempire:Everybody's reality is different. If you live in Lagos and suddenly find yourself living somewhere in Gombe state, would life be the same for you? It's not about Canada, it's a function of where you are. I live in the same Canada but I'm enjoying my life. I attend a Nigerian church Redeem, I belong to an association of Nigerians in the city. I attended countless number of parties, occassions, barbecues etc hosted by Nigerians this year. It has been all fun this year especially after covid disruptions. The naija community here is bubbling, no dull moment If your friend lives in multi cultural areas where you have lots of Nigerians, I don't see how one can be lonely except the person wants to be lonely cos there are too many events that becomes difficult to keep up with. If your friend lives in an area where he is the only black man, then it's wise to relocate to other areas. Even in Canada, people do move from one area to another, one city to another and even one province to another. Govt no use chain tie anybody yansh for one place. |
naijaboy99:So what exactly is your problem on what they save or cannot save? Why disturb yourself over things that doesn't concern you? You guys should find something more productive to talk about with your time instead of chasing people abroad savings like it matters to you. Some of you are richer than Nigerians abroad so why the brouhaha? |
youngsahito:Guys, it is about need not show off. China needs these infrastructures. Let us not forget that China contains 1.4 billion people. With this population, you need all the infrastructures you can get. America plus Canada plus western Europe is not even up to half of China's population. You wouldn't expect the west to build some of these things China is building, it wouldn't make economic sense |
naijaboy99:Instead of all these envy for Nigerians abroad I see in this forum, I'll rather you appreciate them. You guys try all the time to convince yourself that you are better off in Nigeria then that's fantastic. By the way, Nigerians in diaspora sent $5.16b to Nigeria in the first 3 months of 2022 from their less than $30 savings from menial jobs as you said. Without Nigerian abroad remittances, naira would have hit 1k per dollar now. Read the news below and appreciate your brothers abroad https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/08/nigerias-diaspora-remittances-rise-20-3-to-5-16bn-in-q122/ |
ednut1:Exactly my brother. I thought this travel section is for people abroad and those who intend to travel. I remember when I had no interest in leaving Naija, I didn't step into travel section for once. I only started coming into travel section when I now wanted to travel. How can someone who thinks abroad is bad have all the time in the world to frequent the travel section and be posting about abroad he or she is not interested in? They think we are fools. ![]() |
He is only representing him cos it is an African country. If na UK or other developed countries, Buhari will never have skipped it no matter the condition ![]() |
SergeantTitus:Being bored is a function of where you live. An Edo man who finds himself in Sokoto will likely be bored. For me, I haven't been bored in Canada one bit. In fact, my social life drastically improved in Canada. You can't be bored when you have Nigerian churches packed with Nigerians of all tribes willing to mingle with each other. This summer alone, I have attended uncountable number of events from barbecues to sports activities to organized Nigerian picnics etc. I come back home with 24/7 light and wifi, I watch all Nigerian and international comedy skits on YouTube, that one alone can keep you laughing and busy the whole day. Nigerians who are bored are likely ones who live in areas without large Nigerian community or those ones who don't want to relate with fellow Nigerians. |

Building wealth is hard everywhere. If it was easy, Nigeria will not be the poverty capital of the world. Anybody who is comfortable on government benefits is not serious at all. It is still better to make $2m and pay 50% in taxes than to make $25k and pay no taxes at all. Besides corporation pay low taxes. I run a business in Canada and I pay low taxes compared to people who work under a company. People who build wealth anywhere in the world are those who are financially smart and can leverage on the system. There are a lot of naija tech professionals in Canada that can never touch a full time job but will rather incorporate a business and work as a contractor cos that's how to make more money. You need to be smart to build wealth anywhere in the world High cost of living is in every country. You can't compare the cost of living in Lagos and Abuja to living in Osogbo or Auchi. Toronto, London, New York, Tokyo etc are big cities and will have higher cost of living. Someone like me will not live in those cities if offered free house sef due to other reasons. Boredom is a function of where you live. If you live in places with large naija community, you can't be bored. I attend a Nigerian church and there are always naija events almost every weekend during the summer. I have never been bored in Canada Cold is something you can get used to, the same way people get used to heat, blackout and mosquitoes. The first year is always tough but after then your body adjusts. Besides, during cold weather, you dress for the weather, no big deal. I met a naija software developer yesterday who was recruited from Lagos and his worked permit processed. I was surprised as I didn't know this was even possible. People are getting professional jobs steady. But then people need to be realistic. You can't be bank manager in Nigeria and expect them to give you bank manager job in Canada, the question is what do you know about the Canadian banking system? If dem give u Canadian bank, you fit manage am?The 2 countries operate a different banking models. This is also true for some other professions. However, IT gurus are slotting into the job market very easily cos they are in demand and IT is IT everywhere in the world, it does not require big certificates just your skills. Canada is not heaven and not the best country in the world but it is sure one of the best. This is a country of just 38m people but have the 10th largest economy in the world, can you beat that? Come on, give them some credit abeg. If Nigeria with our 200m people was half as good as Canada, we would have been among the top 10 economies in the world and people won't be this crazy to migrate. |
Munamoqel:There are lots of reasons. Whatever the UK is suffering now is temporary. If there is anything we have learned from the past, it is the fact that the white man has ability to meet their challenges and solve their problems. The unprecedented inflationary problems as a result of energy crisis will make them even more resilient in the future. I'm sure policy planners in the UK are thinking deep right now. Now, compare it to Nigeria and African countries that lack the capability to solve even the most basic and simple problems. There have been double digits inflation for years in Nigeria but nobody cares cos we are used to suffering and smiling. The thinking of most Nigerians still rushing there will likely be that things will stabilize in the next 1 or 2 years and I don't blame them especially considering that Nigeria's problems might be unsolvable. |
Originality007:I'm surprised you of all people think that these guys give a shit about moving the country forward. Make no mistake, like Buhari, Tinubu and Atiku are not there for anything other than fulfilling their personal ambitions. Nigeria can go to hell for all they care. Tinubu is courting gandollar cos of the 1 billion kano vote he is eyeing. You know Nigeria electoral power lies with illiterates so smart Tinubu knows exactly what he is doing. |
The writer should not insult Nigerians by putting them in that category. He should go and count how many Nigerians are in those camps. Nigerians I know who manage to travel out work hard to make money, no laziness or looking for free money. There is currently labor shortage in America and some companies have increased their minimum wage and added a sign on bonus to attract workers yet some people don't want to take advantage of that. Except you are an illegal immigrant, this shouldn't apply to you. |
Gorgeous345:Guy, are you sure you are ready for a PhD? Evaluate yourself again and be sure you can do it, e get why. My humble advice |
Putin doing what he does best. He didn't use poisoning tactics this time around |
I told someone immediately after the New York attack that Femi and Lai would use it as a justification for Nigeria insecurity. |
Buhari is more than 80 years ago. He does not care about the future. He has settled his children and relatives. Unfortunately majority of people in Nigeria are not seeing the big picture. Goodluck to the next president. |
israelmao:Buhari is more worried about his British medical care than the success of the Ajaokuta revamp. He has to compensate people who holds the key to his life . Do you want him to receive a wrong injection by mistake when he goes for medical treatment next 2 months? Buhari is smart ooo ![]() |
