We can generate a crude dataset of the graph. Just select a sample of 100 popular posters(beaf, Idowuogbo, Onila, Musiwa etc) in an excel sheet and list out all the nodes. of course there will be some people outside those links who will be part of the dataset by association. just weight it and see who's where and with who. But to make sense of it, I suspect you might need to add other data like the spread of the posts (where do they post more), who&who tend to post on the same thread and what is the post distance ( average distance between their posts<---how frequently they reply each other). of course Seun can also add stuff like their locations as derived from their IP addresses (not always reliable). or their stated locations (also not reliable. also biodata like age. there's lots and lots you could do. ( my mind is already considering what nouns and verbs their posts tend to have in common e.g who's else has a similar amount of 'GEJ' scattered all over his posts like Beaf). You could even use it for plagiarism research. Can we find out who's using duplicate accounts just by analysing their posts? etc. Lots of cool stuff waiting for curious minds. |
Take soccer out of the government's hands. Allow clubs to negotiate individual TV rights and be paid millions by companies like Supersport. Just like the NSE(Nigerian stock exchange), the NFA should be a private body funded by the clubs not the government. All Nigerian players must go through a mandatory age-test monitored by an international body to independently verify the ages of ALL players playing in the league and this must be recertified at 3 year intervals. A quota in each national team must be reserved to people who have represented Nigeria in age grade competitions. This must be fixed in stone (at least for the next 10 years). This is to enforce continuity. Age grade players in nigeria should only be selected after passing the above mentioned age testing. If we can move the league clubs from a sole ownership structure to a centrally owned, regionally franchised model like the MLS, that could also be a good idea. Tax holiday for foreign players in Nigeria from Europe and other Non-african players ( before you hit me, I feel this will make the league even more international). Kick certain clubs out of the league ( especially those with bad pitches, recurrent hooliganism and exceptionally poor finances.) |

A trial will convince. |
Timileyin: which one of this frameworks can i use and not use there models and layout structure.. just want to plug it into a currently built application and use some functionsI dont have the link here, but there are ways you can plug in the Codeigniter classes into your application even if you are not running your whole application on codeigniter. Codeigniter helper classes are simply normal PHP functions and can be copied and pasted OR included verbatim in your application. its the plugins and library functions that might be a little more involved. Zend modules are also full fledged PHP classes and can be dropped into your project by copying the appropriate files. in fact for a recent side project, Codeigniter was used for the main project while Zend was brought in to provide the heavy machinery (Roles and Zend Lucene). Just google for "using codeigniter libraries in php project" or check on stackoverflow. |
@LordZouga aside from being a thing of pride to nigerians, I dont really think it would be of any sufficient impact. At best, I would suggest you look at one of the many open source browsers available and fork it. Build off that and you can do something worthwhile. No use reinventing the wheel. As for the rest of the ideas, we need to subject them to the realism/pragmatism test. Which ones can actually be done? which ones are more long-term in nature? or probably circumstances may not yet favour them? Essentially, which ones can we shoot for within the time available. |
@Kobojunkie As creator, you can add a poll and even edit the polls. Just add it and let people vote. |
Casting my bread upon the waters: Build a nigerian version of Kickstarter that enables a person raise money for a) a life threatening condition b) new startup idea or c) interesting art/culture project or d) charitable cause with pledge tracking, requestor verification and e-payment built in. This can be utilized by the Nairaland Charity (unofficial) or other interested nigerian charities. What's more==> It has absolutely no commercial value whatsoever but is a labor of love if attempted. |
@Kobojunkie, I am guessing the above comment is supposed to be my cue to jump into some long-running pointless argument. hehe. try harder. In the meantime, you can try contributing to the ongoing thought experiment (unless you have nothing to share except criticism). |
Length of tenure and size/area administered are the criteria for measuring achievement nowadays abi noted.Awo met a backward region and pulled it ahead of the rest of the country. Awo met an insular largely illiterate farming people and forced them to send kids to school at government expense. Dramatically increasing literacy rates and changing the lives of millions who might never have had an education. Awo Took an old indigenous city and for a time, it was the most advanced city on the continent. And you choose to compare that with OBJ. ok. noted again. |
Dear Lord, Please send us a visionary leader in the southwest north of Lagos. Osun,Ondo,Oyo,Ekiti need your help. Why do we we have crappy govs all over the place? Hooligans all. Hoping Fashola completes this. Its nice to have governors that leave legacies for a change. Like Jakande, he'll be forever remembered too. |
Learn R , Matlab or Spotfire. You can do lots of statistical analysis. Spotfire would allow you to do trend analysis/ visual analysis while Matlab would be useful for modelling your microbe populations (I am trying to sound knowledgeable about microbiology. I know diddlysquat about that ).SpotFire====>www.spotfire.tibco.com R===========>http://www.r-project.org/ & http://www.programmingr.com/ Matlab======>www.mathworks.com/products/matlab/ All the best |
Is there a legal way to prosecute people for noise pollution in Nigeria? I recall growing up and getting pissed because the church in front of my house would keep clapping and blaring noise till midnight only for us to be awakened by an envious mullah in my street who saw the morning as his own chance to avenge the late night church escapades. Fast forward a few years and very recently a bunch of drunk guys in my neighbourhood decide to console themselves by blasting music and dancing half naked till very late. Lawyers in the house, is there no way to punish such behaviour? Note this is outside lagos. I know lagos recently created something similar. All I need is some loophole that could be used in this case to set some kind of useful precedent. Nigerians need to be more considerate. |
#############################################@webdezzi My code in both Java or PHP generally looks like that though. All you have to do is look down to know who the 'children' and 'grandchildren' blocks of code are. ![]() |
He should be thoroughly punished. Time to let these monarchs understand we are now in the age of civil law not the crappy traditions that allowed them to lord it over everyone. Romeo and Juliet my foot!!! |
Please dont be discouraged by any tribal/imbecilic comments on this thread. Your thoughts are still welcome. |
5 to 10 years from now, it wont matter to me and you which language brought you the X( glory, money, fame, girls or whatever it is you are chasing). All that would matter is what you have achieved. Its cool to fall in love with your tools but not cool to love them to the detriment of your effectiveness/long-term success. |
Here. Touche. My point, however poorly transmitted, has been made. If there are gaps, rest assured that there are lots of opportunistic individuals everywhere who will rush to fill it. No one is panting after the other and we can all survive on our own. |
Enough of complaints and lamentations. If by some freak of nature, you were to become Nigeria's Commander-In-chief today or National Security Adviser, WHAT are the steps you would take to stop Boko Haram completely? What would you do differently from what the armed forces are doing at the moment? |
Concealing knowledge of someone's Boko Haram membership should be considered a crime punishable by law. |
lordZOUGA: uhmm... javascript has been doing that.... for a very long timeReally?!! Cool. Which applications? |
Disclaimer: Am Yoruba Frankly speaking, NL insults aside, We can all survive without each other. Yes, the first few years might be rocky for all but we'll adapt. Dont make assumptions. I rarely comment on such obviously tribal threads but I notice certain arguments are regularly marshalled anytime tribal arguments occur on NL. I really dont see the average yoruba man panting after other tribes, it just wont happen. We'll definitely miss you ( same as you'll miss us too). Besides, the loss will be on all sides. Its a fact that the Igbos would lose access to western markets ( though they'll still survive nontheless). Emotions would also be quite raw in the aftermath of a breakup and this will definitely affect any and all assets they might have acquired in the west pre-breakup ( I am not advocating this but the greedy among my people and the aggrieved will do so). Besides a breakup will force you to face squarely many of the problems you might have been able to ignore by virtue of the nigerian status quo ( Erosion, Human capital issues ( people choosing hustling instead of finishing school), Other social issues ( cant think of any at the moment)). Contrary to popularly held belief, we are not cowards but we take calculated risks. In the event, that we can achieve a breakup with minimal risk/loss, expect us to take action. That we dont get inflamed every time there is a clash is because the military era is now a more distant memory. Hausa or Ijaw attacks shortly after the military era would have attracted instant retaliation but the more the years pass, the more the yoruba mellow again until something comes to rile us up again. We are a calm people and I would want us to remain as such. If the other two national tripods ( Hausa, Igbo) choose to be hotheads pulling in different directions, we should be able to keep the pot from falling by being the calm tripod. THATS WHO WE ARE. Bad sides: As a tribe, I see the Yoruba as willing to let others take the punishment if possible except we see others as being deliberately acquiescing to unfair conditions ( subsidy riots for example). which still falls under the calculated risks attitude. |
Another strike in python's favor is the fact that its currently also being used as the macro language for very many applications ( Inkscape, Blender, CorelDraw, AutoCAD etc). So if you have Python skills, you only have to learn the unique objects in each application to become AWESOME. Not a Python fanboy by the way ( or any other language for that matter). I adapt based on expectation (customer's). |
Some of those states in the southwest are literate in other languages( especially yoruba). Same for the north where you have people who speak&write poor english but near-excellent arabic. Our data and corporate/social life in nigeria is seriously skewed. |
@Kobojunkie guess you mean stuffs like the NSE api among other things. |
Illiterate in what language? Many of those kids can also read arabic. (my assumption). We might need to expand our minds and look for other solutions. Our one-size-fits-all educational system (coupled with corrupt politicians) is clearly not working for us. |
Also include any nigerian APIs you know ( those won't be on Programmable Web anyway, though I might be wrong). |
Kobojunkie: @moderator, can you please create a thread where the programmers on here can include information on any and all web services/APIS that they know of or are involved in the creation of. This is so those of us looking for data or in need of information on what exists can get a good idea of what is available out there for use.Done. |
This is in response to a request by Kobojunkie. please list any webservices or APIs you know or are working on in this thread. Ideally please follow the format below or use one of your own choosing (I trust your IQs, just make it logical). Name: Twilio API URL: www.twilio.com Description: Twilio is a web-service API that lets you use your existing web languages and skills to build voice and SMS applications. |
am already tracking the dude. one Emeka idiot keeps sending me mails too. Might be forced to take agressive action soon. |

noted.
