Apologies for all deleted comments. This thread is now being maintained as a VB.NET wiki of sorts. All non-topic comments will no longer be allowed on this thread except requests for help or replies to help requests.

My apologies to Beaf, odiaero, Femi and the others.
ProgrammingRe: General Strategies For Converting Legacy Code? by kodewrita(m): 1:24pm On Nov 28, 2011
Before tackling the huge tacky ball of weave called the backend, I would try to work on the frontend,

--look for echo statements printing literals in the code and simply convert them to PHP escape statements e.g echo "<head>" to ?> <head><?php .

--for some functions, I'll see if I can return the output as variables instead of echoing straight from the function. This would be a step before actually ==saving a copy in a different folder with function calls replaced with appropriate variables or placeholders
==bringing in smarty templates or plain old preg_replace to convert the variables into text.

--most old code especially PHP3.x ish have repeated code. Lots of copy and paste ish. I'll look through carefully for functionality repeated in many places and then start replacing them with a one-line function call to my new function with differing arguments.

--If its not live, I can try tracing the flow of the application by placing echo statements everywhere (I actually use this for debugging) e.g

function xyz(){
yada yada yada( lines of code originally there).
echo "function xyz, present sir"; // :-) you get the idea
}

--tracing the flow will help me know how to combine all the scattered code. Essentially, you need to look for code that is common to many scripts and bring them back to the same place. They will mainly be of two types:
==repeated lines of code
==configuration variables. old code tends to rely on globals for this but you may simply see it as repeated variables (you might as well put these in a central file and include them everywhere). i think.

I also try to work one user story at a time. So for creating a user post, I would refactor all functions relating to that single action before moving on to the next action.

candylips:
use the refactor facility in an IDE to refactor in small chunks and write extensive test to make sure you haven't broken anything
do that after each major change.

Anything longer than 20 lines is candidate for refactoring except:
==I dont understand it or

And if you have the special luck to be blessed with a full page of "functionless" PHP script, I would suggest trying to extract an API from it.

get a SCJP just to round up your Java knowledge and give you some credibility.
a MCPD for C# is not a bad idea too. And please document the side-projects( the ones that can be presented at an interview).

All the best.

THink of it as a wood-gnome or goblin. Essentially an african version of the leprechaun. Reputed to carry a mat that if stolen would make the bearer extremely rich ( same way the Irish dream of stealing the leprechaun's pot of riches). Always crying like a baby.

Promised not to contribute again as I am not a CU grad but this response just drew my attention. Couldnt resist.

lilkech:
I attended imsu. .
School fees - 53k No need to comment too much on this but currently Bowen students pay 500k
sug & dept - 3k Extortion. This is part of the problem WE are trying to avoid.
books per semester - 6k (per year - 12k) . You were not that bookish I guess. First year Chemistry and physics alone (Nelson thornes Understanding Physics and Chemistry + HallidayResnick Physics 9k+9K+7k=25K. That doesnt include all the other textbooks for the other courses.
assignments, typing, binding research - 7k too small to nitpick bt I am sure we pay a whole lot more especially with ITK classmates who laminate & bind consistently
feeding(restaurant) - N200 per meal (home cooking - 4k per month) Might as well pack your bags and go home. 10k monthly is equivalent to pure misery in a private school. Minimum 15k.

water - 1k per month More extortion.
accomodation - 80k per year Add this to your tuition to buffer up your figure up there. still small.
nepa bill - 1.5k per month Per session, 9k SO?
transportation (to and fro campus)- N200 per day. We paid the same so no biggie.
church - N100 (add offering and bulletin - N100) every sunday Really? You mean you didnt tithe too?
beer - N250 per bottle (minimum of 4 boor per sitting - 1k) Each meal would cost close to 150 (way back!!!)and had to be accompanied by a can of malt. 3-4 times daily.
babe maintainance and flexing - LETZ NOT NEAR THERE AT ALL Lets go there. Vals was not complete if you didnt declare for the babe or as they say: Shake her hostel by topping the other guys with some insanely expensive gift among other maga/mugu fees in school. These are not minimum-wage babes plz.
bad debts to pals - 10k huh
sundry expenses - N10k huh I take this to mean the lecturer's bribe

NB:

A few of us attended Private schools not because we were not smart but simply because we wanted 4 years of luxury not 4 years of kowtowing to academic demigods/know-it-alls.

I wanted to school in an environment filtered to ensure that most people I befriend are members of the upper-crust of society.

And I also wanted to school in an environment less resistant to change. I got this one. (we dived right into comp sci courses in year one instead wasting all our time on useless courses(I'll be silent on this one) and by 300L we were already in the thick of core IT courses (some of them 400L or 500L in comparable public universities)).

In spite of the so-called restrictions, It was a great experience and I daresay one that you cant replicate in a public institution.

Its the general excuse or publicly-agreed misconception that private school kids are dumb and that they dont hustle. Ask them that in CU where people are awarded prizes yearly for Best Entrepreneur. I schooled in Bowen and lots of students made money in school and out of it from diverse things. In fact, it was easier starting a business in my school because lots of people had raw cash. i had a friend who launched a rival hotspot to the school internet center, a lady whose habit was to target each popular holiday and sell stuff/organize parties, guys who organized foreign trips, guys who set up magazines, you-name-it.

You are always the sole arbiter of your destiny. Agreed, Public schools might force to develop certain aspects of your character but a private school is the best place to develop that key thing called a network.

Where else will you get to school with most kids of the top CEOs in the country?

Where else is the degrees of separation so small that you can safely assume that you are just 3-4 phone calls away from any celebrity in nigeria? Yes. ANY.

Where else can you be hundred percent certain that you would have either someone from your school or another private school contact in a company who can provide what you need?

The fact is that all these institutions have one thing that public schools dont really have: Consistent and focused improvement plans that are faithfully executed.
The Bowen Uni I attended is far different from the current one. The pace of development is astonishing. Yes we can attribute that to newness but the fresh thinking and the fact that they have less old garbage to clear out means that ultimately the students will end up schooling in institutions much much better than your beloved "publics".

Make all the noise you want, but in 10 years or less, None of your "publics" will measure up to these institutions. None. (at least I am certain of Bowen, can't say about the rest).

The people of cameroon are NOT on the streets crying for help, or am i missing something here?

They have a different system of government FULL STOP!

It doesnt matter if he's been in rule for 200years (that would be a world record) their current political system allows for this to happen
it is foreign-born or foreign-resident emigres like this poster quoted here who are part of the problem in africa. Instead of fighting for change, these numsku.lls are busy trying to prop up the old order that has been holding africa back. Libyans suffered 42 years before rising, that doesnt mean they ever wanted the situation to continue, they just didnt know how to go about it.

The main reason why women constantly give birth to female children lies in the hands of men. If only you know the reason, you can turn that situation around. This might help:
its people like you who are causing the deaths of female infants around the world.

blogexpert:
Can you be so sure that, that adopted son or daughter would not be a cause for worry when the real parents show up to claim their legitimate child?
simple. sue them for attempted murder of the infant and put the full weight of the law on them. Unless the lady or parent in question actually put up the child for adoption in which case you sit them down and explain the whole point of legal adoptions===> YOU ARE THE PARENT IN THE EYES OF THE LAW NOW.

Besides if you are a great parent, the child will recognise that he/she has a biological and a legal parent and still love you more for bringing him/her up.

Ut the crap, cap.

You might as well blame them for sleeping with Hitler's mum.

Hitler is solely responsible for all the horrors attributed to him.

The Bolsheviks irrespective of the source of their funding, cannot escape responsibility for their actions.

Active agents are as culpable as the forces behind them and even more culpable because in the final analysis the final decision rests with them.

And to educate you my dear misguided friend. The Nazis nationalised Ford factories like so many other businesses and handed them over to armaments producers like the Krupps to produce on behalf of Germany.
So they were effectively under German control NOT AMERICAN.

@Honeric, I speak THEIR english language with my beloved yoruba language always showing itself one way or the other either in the choice of stress tonations or the sometimes musical nature of my english(like millions of educated nigerians) THEREFORE even though I hate to admit it, I do have an ACCENT.

That it is an unpalatable truth does not change the fact that its a TRUTH.

Deforestation? Alive and kicking. Hope you know oil is not the only resource suffering the effects of corrupt government. Come to Osun state and see government reserves being preferentially logged by party allied people and others. The party in power doesn't matter. All that changes is the particular set of loggers concerned and no sustainable replacement plan is evident.

While CNN may exxagerate or sensationalize, the truth is that our forests just like other aspects of Nigeria are under heavy attack.

My conclusion from all this is that you would rather assume that all bad comments are insults instead of finding the germ of truth within and stamping out the evils in our fibres.

There has to be a reason Nigeria is still the hotbed of polio and its not the fault of the West, ITS OUR FAULT.

Take the blame, Own the problem, Then solve it.

Let's stop hiding in the sand.

Pro-libyan yes. Prowestern no.

I support libyans fighting for their freedom. I support helping them topple a dictator. I support removing a dictator who refuses to leave peacefully. I could care less what the West think.

Saddam didn't need to have WMDs. His mere existence was a continued insult to every right-thinking individual. Anyman who would kill thousands of Kurds(his citizens) and Iranians with chemical weapons does not deserve our pity.

Vietnam was justified but badly handled. Communism has been conclusively proven to be a soulless, impractical and doomed ideology. Allowing vietnam to fall easily would have led to the fall of countries way more mportant( Indonesia, Malaysia). Vietnam just like Korea sent a message that america was willing to shed blood to stop the spread of communism. Am I happy they did? Definitely. A godless ideolody that downplays basic human liberties for some obscure perfect human ideal needs to be killed @ all costs (Nazism, Communism, Fascism, Institutionalized Slavery).

i guess u and most of the responders here do not know the meaning of the words friend, guest and hospitality.
you now have a few other people, with their jetsam and flotsam, in your 'world', so it cannot be the same.

your selfishness must have so shown that your 'friend' tried to buy your acceptance with money.

if you call the guy friend, tell him what you expect. reasonably.
but i think you need to work a bit harder on yourself.
(i have thrown a few friends out of my place to my eternal regret. wish i had taken a diferent route).
you need to be more accomodating.
would it help if i say quite a few of his actions have been 'tres unfriendly' in the past. am actually going against precedent because I am certain he's going to be around/we'll definitely keep running into each other for the next decade (very certain).

By allowing your friend to commit immorality and fornication in your own house - in the sight of God is abomination.
God has not provided the house for you to run a brothel. Give your life to Christ, tell your friend about your decision to follow Jesus.

Slow down man, Accomodating a friend and his fiancee is not a crime in any book of the Bible. Am only pissed at not being informed and the stylish attempt to create permanent access.

Direct approach . . . .Hey guys, go home!

Indirect approach . . . . .

You and your girlfriend become passionate in the living room! In full view. Be sure to grope a lot and make lots of groaning noises.

Do laundary and be sure to leave lots of stained underpants and socks spread out on the bed, say you're sorting them out.

Have liver and onions for supper! Turn on all the radios in the house on Celine Dion and sing along at top of lungs! Day and night. . .

and while making whoopie . . .especially if you sing bad.

Make a list of chores for her to do and nag her about it constantly, put some good one's down.

Drink up all the soda, milk and juice in the Fridge but leave the empty bottles. Then ask them to go buy some if they complain.

Disconnect the hot water in the showers(until they leave! then magically turn it back on and say you fixed it after they leave)

Suddenly start saying something is biting you all the time . . . rub your legs a lot . . . until they turn red . . then announce that

the house is infested with bugs and you need to have it fumigated.

Got to a pet store and purchase a cheap pet rat.Put it under her sheets . . . then scream alot when she finds it and claim you

never saw it before!

Start sharpening all the knives in the house. Don't say anything. Just stare straight ahead and keep sharpening. . .especially at

night do this.

Have an accomplice then flick out the circuit breakers one by one . . . Have someone record screaming and but it in the cd

player on the alarm program so it goes off at 3am. Then claim you don't know who is screaming. . . .maybe a ghost??

Start to hit on her(when he's not around), like stroke her hair and ask her if she's into thr**somes. This stuff should work.
sweetheart, did you moonlight as a serial killer in some past life? thats so psycho. thanks tho. The last idea is kinda repugnant to me. I wont do that just to get them outta the house. I would much rather call the guy and discuss one-on-one. the repercussions whether she says yes or no are tremendous besides she's a cool good girl.

2buff:
Fart grin

and If they don't get the message cheesy . . . fart harder angry
Really. angry angry angry and let my flat become known as the Fart Palace?

pro01:
It's always better not to take them in at all in the first place. From my experience the friendship never remains the same after you eject the leech that has become used to staying with you. Although he might pretend everything is cool, but trust me, he'll be nursing a grudge, and would be yearning for an opportunity to avenge his bruised ego. I grew up in a home that took in all manner of relatives and stranded people. At the last count, more that 100 people must have lived with us at one time or the other, some of them stayed as long as 5 years. Yet most of them have nothing but ingratitude for their hosts at the end of the day. When I eventually got my own place, I resolved that I was never going to accept 'squatters' no matter what. I usually find a way to ease them out from the get-go, that way the friendship remains intact.
we learn as we go along.
