TV/MoviesRe: Movie Review: Áfáméfúná - An Nwa-boi Story. by Konquest: 8:49pm On Apr 02, 2024
CaveAdullam:
"If you marry a monkey because of money, the money will one day finish, but the monkey remains".

Kanayo. O. Kanayo

I love the fact that the movie didn't portray human ritual as a means of making money. Because it is superstitious and inhumane. This is not to say people aren't involved in it. But that human ritual is just a term to cover up money laundering, fraud, and other form of illegality.

The movie from start to finish was intriguing and exciting. Though, the producer and writer were trying to sell a narrative that I found disturbing, however, their point was understandable. We'll get there later.

Afamefuna was a man like his father and master. Men who will toil the soil, with long streams of sweat and sometimes blood breaking on their backs and legs. Rather than steal or beg.

Afamefuna was a man who understood what integrity entails. He was so passionate about his apprenticeship that he rose to a rank even his master was mirthful about.

He was attentive to his job. Always on point. Making friends and avoiding enemies. Mapping his terrain to know where his territory borders and how to make good harvests from it.

He would have ended up being a doormat man even though he was honest. That's where Paulo comes in. Paulo was a senior colleague at first, then a friend, later a brother, and unfortunately in the end, an enemy.

Paulo is like men who aren't able to sustain themselves to the end. May not be exactly their fault; some seeds don't reach the farm.

Paulo was a friend who thought Afamefuna the way of the street, the modus operandi of doing business among sheep, goats, and tigers. Integrity was not enough. Honesty was not enough. Kindness was not enough. The good man must pose as a warrior to defend himself and attack enemies. That's who Paulo was to Afamefuna; his shield and sword.

Afamefuna's father raised his son using his experience, never leaving his son in the dark, feeding him daily with the wisdom of sages. Giving men a highlight on raising quality sons. Which by pure serendipity, the young man quickly leveraged in his time of need - when his boss was almost going bankrupt and helpless.

The movie portrays hard work and integrity as the key to success. Having a keen eye to spot a good location to start a business and becoming the mayor of that town.

Afamefuna had a crush on his boss's daughter, however, his timidity, and also, the engagement of Paulo to the beautiful damsel he admired stopped him from making any amorous move.

This damsel, Amaka indeliberately turned Paulo into Afamefuna's worst and bitter enemy. Afamefuna has to take much blame here, however.

Paulo got jealous that Afamefuna got the blessings of his boss and has now gained his freedom. That act unfurled the dirty nature of Paulo, eroding his little integrity and efficiency. Paulo became wild and angry and sort for other means aside from legality to make money, riches, and wealth. Of course, he made a lot of money but at the cost of his dear life.

Afamefuna getting married to their boss's daughter, Amaka, was another fuel that aggravated the fire of hate between the duo who were once friends but now enemies.

Afamefuna broke the bro code: Bros shouldn't lust after their bros sisters, girlfriends, and wives. Paulo too broke one of the bro codes: Bros shouldn't eat where they shit; he was dating his boss's daughter.

Amaka also portrays the fact that women don't mind jumping high fences, crossing seas, and values to prove their love for a man they have a genuine desire for. She stole from her father to feed the fraudulence of Paulo, her boyfriend who promised her marriage but later jilted her. Funny enough, after many years of separation, she was still entangled with Paulo despite his ill-treatment of her. Genuine desire has a taste of Stockholm syndrome.

Afamefuna capitalized on the abusive relationship of Paulo et Amaka. He was able to lure his long-time crush into a housewife. Surprisingly, unfortunately, and unknowingly for him, he paid a dear price by raising Paulo's biological son. He was a victim of paternity fraud.

Paternity fraud is where I have an issue with the writer and producer of the movie. Amaka wasn't scolded for her actions. Probably, she didn't know because she was playing a home-and-away sex match. Rather she was condoled for her fraud.

Instead of letting Lotanna go meet his biological father, Paulo, Afamefuna didn't, and that was used as manipulative bait by Paulo to blackmail him. All Afamefuna wanted was peace to reign in his life and family, however, he was paying a high price that was detrimental to his total well-being.

Children of paternity fraud shouldn't suffer maltreatment due to the negligence and atrocities of their mothers. However, letting the truth known from the onset is better than covering it in an attempt not to hurt the kids. It doesn't help the kids in the long run.

Paternity fraud is a great crime against fathers and humanity. Fathers and kids involved can only survive this storm by making the truth known and administering justice.

Apprenticeship is a good way of raising soft hands who will later become moving economic forces. The Igbo Apprenticeship System is still in vogue, but it needs better regulations for the efficiency and raising of strong economic leaders. This can scale to every part of the nation.

The picture quality of the movie was top-notch. Good actors. Good play. Good movie.

Thanks.
Interesting review.

ijustdey:
Crude oil prices, on Monday, increased to a five-month high.

Brent crude increased by 0.56 percent to $87.54 a barrel while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 0.79 percent, to $83.83 percent, at 20.00 WAT.

Consequently, the development puts both crude benchmarks on track for their highest closes since October 27, 2023.

This is above the $77.96 per barrel the federal government benchmarked as oil price in the 2024 budget.

It is also higher than the $65 per barrel used by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to calculate the allocated (90,000 barrels) crude in the $3.3 billion crude-for-cash loan agreement with African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).

NNPC, in a statement on January 21, had said if “oil prices rise, more money will come in from selling the 90,000 barrels, allowing for faster repayment. However, if oil prices fall, the repayment may be slower”.

“The quantity of crude earmarked (90,000 barrels) is sized to ensure enough cash is available for the repayment of the facility when it is due,” NNPC said.

“This also ensures that NNPC Limited can meet other cash flow obligations, considering the expected future price of crude oil globally.”

NNPC said oil prices are highly unpredictable, meaning prices can fluctuate within any given period.

Meanwhile, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), on March 13, said Nigeria’s average daily crude oil production dropped to 1.32 million barrels per day (bpd) in February.

However, OPEC’s secondary sources put Nigeria’s crude production at 1.476 million bpd — a 3.29 percent uptick from the 1.429 million bpd reported by the oil cartel in January this year.

Example 2
Can you say the national anthem, or poem ? Yes I can recite it them by heart.

Offhand is CORRECT in this context. Offhand is the ability to recall things with ease from your memory.

Today, the man has had his character assassinated by you people to the extent that those who don't even know him are wondering what he must've done wrong or who he offended. Just saying.
I have to step into the convo here...

Your post on this thread is a further confirmation that YOU are NOT from Edo State otherwise you would have realized that Reno Omokri (whose 2021 X screenshot post you attached) is NOT a Yoruba man but he is paternally an Urhobo man with an Itsekiri mother from the royal family lineage. Yes, Itsekiris have direct Yoruba and Edo ancestries with a major part of the ancestral lineages historically leaning more to the Yoruba subgroups of Ilaje, Ijebu and Ife ancestral components of the larger Itsekiri folks.

Urhobos are majorly of Edo descent, so, your use of Reno Omokri's 2021 X post as an example to show "betrayal" and guilt-trip Yoruba folks is a CLEAR misnomer and finally confirms YOU as a non-Bini-Edo impostor who is using "Etinosa" as part of your Nairaland moniker to mislead folks here. In short I have always suspected for over 2 years now that you are Ibo but the irresponsible post you made on page 1 of this thread exposed you further.

As for Peter Obi and the so-called morality you're talking about, there are many old threads on Nairaland created by Anambra indigenes as far back as 2013 and below, LAMBASTING and insulting Peter Obi for his VERY POOR performance as the Anambra Governor within his two-terms, so, he wasn't a perfect man that you and your ilk are trying to paint him. He even swore NEVER to leave APGA because it is a political party for the Ibos, but he decamped and went to the PDP and decamped further to Labor Party. A real man must keep his words.

So, like most old-school politicians, Peter Obi cannot be relied upon for that morality you're talking about for being a Sani Abacha acolyte in the 1990s and benefiting from the inglorious Military dictatorship of Abacha, whose hit squads bombed and assassinated several people like Chief Alfred Rewane, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, the Journalist Bagauda Kaltho, etc, based on the live TV confessions at the Justice Oputa Panel of Sergent Barnabas Jabila aka Sergeant Rogers and other members of the killer squad. The FIRST ever 1843 Yoruba dictionary (which can be downloaded for free online) CLEARLY lists the word Egusi and it truly shows that Egusi is Indeed a Yoruba word and Egusi soup has been in existence for centuries among the Yorubas.

You've done a good job, but let me add that the actual Yorùbá word for pumpkin is Apìwòròkó or Wòròkó for short.

Also, ṣọkọyọ̀kọ̀tọ̀ or ṣọkọ for short is a different vegetable which grows like the amaranthus (tẹ̀tẹ̀). The pumpkin is a climber whose seed can also be grinded and used to make soup like ẹ̀gúsí. I understand that some people even boil the seed and eat it like a nut.

So, ewé wòròkó which the Igbo call ugwu is also common to other ethnicities like the Yoruba. But I would give it to the Igbo, the Efik, and other southsouth people groups for making it popular, due to certain factors.

The proof
That's it... It's great you attached that PROOF to your post to show that an Ibo scholar CLEARLY stated that Egusi is a LOAN word Yoruba word being used by Ibos.

I have also attached two X links to my last post which is 3 posts above this current post showing that Elili or Enini are the original name Ibo names for melon seeds used by Ibos NOT Egwusi or whatever (which is a corrupted loan word from the Yoruba word Egusi).

As CLEARLY stated, the Yoruba word Egusi is written in the 1843 Yoruba dictionary showing the historic AUTHENTICITY of the word Egusi to Yorubas. Some of the younger Ibos of today are highly dishonest and would argue blindly with you online over what they know NOTHING about historically just to feel superior but they have ended up looking very stupid with this Elili or Enini revelation.

The chicken has come home to roost and it's very obvious that the Yorubas have been eating the soup called Egusi soup for centuries being that the name Egusi is an indigenous Yoruba word derived from Egunsi which has a meaning.

It is time for proper documentation of history by each ethnicity to avoid people stealing words or food recipes while falsely claiming it belongs to them.

I noticed that the Yoruba word for roasted plantain called BOLI has also been corrupted to Bole (sic) by the Rivers State folks. Even though people have been eating BOLI and peanuts or BOLI and roasted fish or boiled fish informally, credit must be given to the Rivers guys for adding some standard to selling roasted plantain or BOLI and fish together.

What I find objectionable is the deliberate bastardization of the Yoruba word BOLI to the incorrect spelling "bole" despite the fact that a lot of Yorubas live and work in Port Harcourt and environs. If they are ashamed to use the correct Yoruba spelling, then they should drop the name and use their own indigenous names to name BOLI. There are other Nigerian ethnic words that a few ethnic groups deliberately bastardize their spellings and it must stop. Folks have to learn not to disrespect others folks languages by mangling them through bad spellings. Period.

Just to help you out from the very deep ignorance you've posted here...

Many NL folks right from pages 1 and 2 have CLEARLY stated that the melon soup is eaten by several ethnicities in Nigeria and West Africa from time and the Yorubas have eaten the highly nutritious Yoruba melon soup (Obe Egunsi or Obe Egusi) from several centuries back.

The word Egusi is found in the FIRST ever Yoruba-English dictionary published in 1843! The first Ibo dictionary from 1888 written by Bishop Crowther and subsequent ones clearly have NO "Egwusi" or whatever listed in them but has Elili OR Enini which are the ORIGINAL Ibo dialectic names for melon seeds. So, it is very CLEAR based on information from even Ibo scholars below that Egusi is one of the loan words Ibo got from Yorubas in the course of their movements around or via the Igalas who as we know speak a Yoruboid language and have part Yoruba ancestries as a result of the fusion centuries back between migrants from Wukari in Taraba with a significant number of Yorubas and Edos around the River Niger and Benue confluence to form Igala according to late Attah of Igala, Michael Ameh Oboni in a 2017 newspaper interview.

For the Yoruba word called EGUSI that was already CLEARLY recorded in the Yoruba dictionary as of 1843, it is HIGHLY dishonest for some younger Ibos here and elsewhere to start claiming ownership of the spelling and word Egusi when infact several credible sources clearly list Egusi (and even Akara, and Keke) as Yoruba words as of 1843 as can be seen from the X link directly below.

Second, the Yoruba name [for what the Ibos call "Ugu"] for hundreds of years has always been EWE WOROKO (Woroko leaf). The English name is Fluted-pumpkin leaves from the Fluted-pumpkin plant which grows naturally in many places around the world. The fact that some folks call it Ugu doesn't mean other ethnic groups don't have their indigenous names for it.

Many ethnic groups have their indigenous names for Fluted-pumpkin leaves. As I stated above, it's called Ewe Wòròkó in Yoruba language, Kabewa in Hausa, Ikong-Ubong in Efik and Ibibio, and Ugu in Ibo.

The Yoruba folks prepare the very popular Obe Wòròkó while the Hausas call their type of soup Miyan Kabewa... all from Fluted-pumpkin.

The Fluted-pumpkin is a delicacy in Kenya as well and it's exported abroad.

According to Bitcoin News, the exchange sent out a notice to its users on Thursday announcing their plans to quit operations in the country.

“We regret to inform you that OKX is no longer providing services to users in India, “The note said.

“Due to local regulations, you need to withdraw all funds from your account.”

“In addition, users must also “close all margin positions, as well as positions in perpetuals, futures, and options” and “redeem all funds from Grow products: Earn, Loan, Jumpstart.” These steps must be completed by April 30 at noon UTC, Accounts will be restricted to withdrawals after this date.” OKX advised.

OKX announcement came after Apple and Google removed several crypto apps from their stores.

India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) recently flagged these crypto exchanges as operating illegally in the country.

In December last year, the Indian FIU issued “compliance Show Cause Notices” to nine offshore crypto service providers.

The Indian Ministry of Finance shared at the time that 31 crypto service providers had registered with the FIU.

OKX crypto exchange was not one of the crypto exchanges that registered with the FIU.

What to Know

In India, Cryptocurrencies are not regulated. The finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that crypto assets cannot be currencies which is why they are yet to be regulated in India.

At the G20 meeting that India hosted last year, the country made a case for a global framework for regulating cryptocurrencies citing the various challenges that will emerge if only one or two countries regulate it.

OKX has over 50 million global users with India being one of its main markets.

you have not said anything different. Ewedu and Gbegiri are the two Yoruba soups known outside Yorubaland.
You should have stated CLEARLY stated that you were referring to popularity outside Yorubaland.

But even outside Yorubaland, the different types of Efo riro soups and Apon soup are very popular in Yoruba-styled restaurants or bukaterias.

So, you are incorrect to emphasize on only Gbegiri and Ewedu. I would agree with you on Gbegiri and Ewedu though, but add the different types of Efo riro soups and Apon soup (Apon is what is alternatively called Ogbono soup).

it's a lie!
They are not "just"
Ewedu and Gbegiri are the two most popular Yoruba soups.
It's obvious that you are beginning to engage in some kind of TROLLING here and NOT paying attention to little details and I will have to END any form of conversation with you here and now.

But desist from saying that only Gbegiri and Ewedu are the two most popular Yoruba soups when there are others. Eastern parts of Yorubaland such as Ekiti, Ijesa, Ondo, etc, don't eat Gbegiri and Ewedu when in their native locality because they have their own regional foods and soups.

The Oyos created Ewedu and Gbegiri soups as regional soups and I clearly stated that over 20 types of soups exist in all regions of Yorubaland from Nigeria to Benin Republic and Togo. Where is the lie there?

You are busy twisting the entire Yoruba culinary history upside down to suit your idea of an Ibo supremacy over some common soups that even the Efiks and Ibibios here on NL threads said years back belonged to them and the Ibos copied those soups. This is the reason why the style of dressing, foods and soups that the Efiks and Ibibios eat are also eaten by the Ohafias, Aros, and other so-called Cross River Ibo clans. Nothing bad in that.
