This my country na wah. Today the 16 July 2014. The Defence Head Quarters of Nigeria on their twitter feed proudly announced that troops had recovered 218 stolen cows in Plateau. Not to knock their hard but poor work against Boko Haram coming out in public to tell the world about cows you recovered when your colleagues,Police men,members of the public and school girls are still unaccounted for following kidnap,is in my opinion very shameful. The crisis that is currently rocking the country’s football is far from being over, as the Federal Government has ordered for the closure of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), bank accounts. The issue of work experience is present in every country in the world. However there is a way round this. As a fresh graduate seeking work you can offer to do unpaid internships with a company no matter how big or small. Also remember on the C.V having 6 months experience at a company does not mean you had to be there Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Your internship could be for a day or two in a week and it may be for half of the the day.You will then tailor your c.v to suit. It's understandable that companies don't want novices as this slows down productivity and can be expensive if they decide to offer training. These are costs many businesses are not willing to incur. However a smart person who understands this can work it to their advantage. When I graduated with my law degree here in London years ago I was feeling impressed with myself but by the time I had spent months getting rejected for everything from middle ranking to office administrator roles, I realised I had to go back to the drawing board as far as experience was concerned. Go and check how much people get paid in the U.K. p.s The only people who tend to make "salaries" £100k + are C.E.Os or very senior executives of big companies. Investment bankers basic salaries are about half that but can top it easily with bonuses "when" they do well. He's not giving false hope (and I can attest to that). Moreover,who says they have to keep a single job to be able to earn what he quoted?There is no one arguing or starting an argument the post was started by someone asking for advice about a location. So i as someone who lives in that location is offering information. I had to point the "£100k" poster out because if you live in the U.K like i do then you know that that statement is likely false. David Cameron(Prime Minister) His official salary is £140K per annum. The Average salary for a middle post male(with years of experience) in 2013 is £31,678. To get a proper answer you need to ask a proper question. It depends on the context in which you are asking. But let me give you some options as you haven't been specific. 1: The U.K consists of 4 countries England,Scotland, Wales, Ireland. England has more economic opportunities than all the others combined. 2: The U.K is still technically in recession. There are by far more job openings in England than Nigeria(easily a statistic of 200 to 1) The jobs are incredibly hard to find.Caveat(depending on the type i.e Care work you can get before you even leave the plane) There is still a lot of discrimination.Caveat(depending on the discipline and position. There are few blacks in high powered well paying roles) The pay is "POOR" for most professions.Caveat(Due to high taxes,national insurance ,inflation and high cost of living) If you finish your masters and legalise your stay the U.K has pros and cons. Second class citizen treatment(Not racism but it doesn't take long to understand what i mean) Difficulty in saving a penny (Worse if you have a family) Pros Advanced infrastructure (Transport links,Steady Power) World class judicial system Security Political Stability Free Health care Social Security (i.e Job seekers allowance,Housing benefit,disability allowance,child benefit etc.etc) Good leadership A very fair equitable society Intellectual stimulation Proximity to Europe for travel. My Personal advice is this. The U.K is a great place. But you will get tired of it eventually like we all do! The qualifications from here are world class and will stand you in good stead anywhere in the world. There are many Masters degree holders with no jobs or working security and i mean in the 1000s. There are also those who manged to get good jobs but that is the exception not the norm. If you have a medical condition that requires constant monitoring like diabetes or you are disabled then there isn't a better country to be in as the government will take care of you via free NHS treatment. If you simply just want to work as an employee for the rest of your life then there is no way Nigeria can possibly be better than the U.K besides opportunities you have employee rights and union power.Even the Director of a company here will think twice before messing with a cleaner fact! However if you harbour any thoughts of owning your own business,striking it rich in life,political aspirations or have an entrepreneurial spirit my advice would be to take your money and stay in Nigeria. Look for something to do. A lot of degrees from Nigeria require minimum conversion courses to make the holders eligible for practise in the U.K. You don't need to blow your wad for a U.K degree. Most Nigerian are of a similar mindset that's why we are always eventually very restless in this country. If i could turn back the hands of time i would have completed my masters a lot sooner than i did and jumped on a plane back home. This is coming from someone with a U.K and Naija passport in full employment and on over £2k a month after tax. A lot of my contemporaries have gone back home or are making arrangements to do so. It's important for young people coming out of university and into the world of work for the first time to heed news like this. Do not for one second think that mass sacking is only a Banking or Nigerian phenomenon! It happens in all sectors public or private and it happens even on a larger scale in other countries(U.S & U.K). Whenever an organisation needs to save money or erstwhile restructure for financial reasons, first thing on the chopping block is employees as staff salaries normally always constitute the largest expense. stagger: I doubt if you can afford to start this biz in Abuja with 700k and be able to compete with the Finze or Gongola industries. Maybe you should start by selling cement.Finze and Gongola are multimillion dollar businesses that have been established for decades but it's not about competing with them as they are on another planet you need to do you. It@s a bit like saying you like fashion but can't open a fashion brand because you will compete with Versace  With N700K you can start in Abuja! However this is my advice to save money on your N700K 1. Do not by a tank!!!!!!!! Trust me on this unless you want to cry a few months down the line. 2. Buy a fairly used water pump. 3. Go to current owners of block industries. The laborers will hook you up with with used wooden pallets(beware of stolen goods though) 4. Arrange with the farmer or owner of land you want to lease to offer you option of installment payments. 5. By the time you have moulded your first couple of hundred blocks you might have run out of cash. Remedy this by going DIRECTLY to the quarry BY YOURSELF to negotiate the cheapest stone dust you can find for delivery. Alternatively you can choose not too mould stone dust blocks till you start making money this would make your production cheaper. However bear in mind many customer want stone dust. No one can give you exact costs because they vary due to factors like location and your own sourcing abilities. Below is a list of items you need. 1. Land Most Block Industry owners do not own the land they work from. It mostly belongs to farmers who they pay a lease to. Make sure you are close to a water source like river,stream or water way or dig a well. Water is the life blood of the business. Do not under any circumstance entertain the idea of buying water or the business will crash before it takes of! 2.Machinery You need a Lister engine. These are very expensive, so you want to source for the most affordable you can find.This normally means travelling out of town to buy one. You need a moulding machine. This is what shapes your blocks. These are made to order by local manufacturers. You need a Water Pumping Machine(Looks like a small generator) This brings in water from your source. 3. Materials You need wooden pallets.This is where your blocks stay to dry out after moulding.Bought from local makers. Start with a few hundred pieces (200-500 pieces). You need also 1 x Wheel Barrow 2 x Shovels 2 x Metal drums(To house water for your machines during moulding.) 2 x Security chains to secure items when you leave site. 4.Storage You have two options. Buy wood from the market and ask a carpenter to construct a small hut for you. Alternatively and more expensively you can buy a disused shipping container and convert. This is to store your items like unused bags of cement when you leave for the day. 5. Daily operation It's profitable depending on a few factors. Location: For obvious reasons Season: During rainy season contructions all over the country slow down meaning less need to buy blocks and less business. Inflation: When a bag of cement rises or falls it affects your ability to mold and customers ability to build or buy blocks for doing so. Capital: The business is very cash intensive. Every thing you do you will have to pay upfront whilst waiting for sale to recoup cost and profit. This includes the machine operator and labourers who are all paid per block and types of block(there are two types) and on the day! This includes your sand delivery which is paid upfront. RIP Mc Loph. Morgan is in a terrible position due to Naija village mentality. Can someone tell me what legal obligation he had to pay the family anything if not for the goodness of his heart. So he didn't make the payments he promised and didn't adopt Mc Lophs son therefore he is now a ritualist that God will judge? Well people should not judge the family to harshly either because their unkind statements about Morgan is due to a mixture of ignorance and an ongoing pain for the loss of a major bread winner of the family cut down before he could shine properly. Nairaland as usual a thriving hotbed of young people talking nonsense of which they lack knowledge and experience.You should only speak about something you know please!! 1970s-1980s: When the Festac project was completed,it was a beautiful model town,of the like there was none in the whole of Lagos state. From First Gate,Second Gate(Agboju Market)and Third gate(connecting to badagry express). There were Public telephones on "each floor" stairwells on most block of flats in Festac.Every avenue had childrens play parks with what we called "Jangolova" in the 80s.Then Lagos state govt delegated "all management" to FHA(Federal Housing Authority). In those days to live in Festac was a thing of pride as it was a centre for Middle -Income families. 1990s onwards : Disaster strikes= Drastic funding cuts,Poor management,Massive corruption in FHA meant there was no more maintenance. FHA official sold off acres of recreational spaces and gardens to wealthy new transplants to Festac. It started with a place called Cocaine avenue on 3rd Avenue near 322road. Even the wealthy owner of the young shall grow buses came and built there. All of a sudden unplanned houses and shops sprung up everywhere,with the attendant unplanned population explosion! The power supply could not sustain it. The plumbing and sewer systems could not sustain it. Festac eventually became impossible for FHA(in those days)to manage. The Lagos state govt failed woefully to save Festac because at the time they were spending Billions developing what they called VGC(Victoria Garden City). All of this combined to turn Festac the beautiful town into a horrible eye sore today. Festac Town today is totally unrecognizable from the smart clean place it used to be. For me on a personal level it makes me very sad as i know what it was growing up. |

One still continues to wonder how & why a service scheduled to depart Abuja for Uyo at 18:25 was delayed by Arik Air to 21:35 or thereabout. Had their being adherence to schedule this incident most probably would have been avoided. We need stronger regulatory agencies than we presently have in all sectors of our economy if we aim to attain global best practices as we see & hear in other climes.What you must accept is that Nigeria is a hotbed of incompetence and ineptitude. Do you know how many operations in "General Hospitals"(not private ooo) that were cancelled due to power failure? Or operations that had to be be concluded with battery operated lighting in Nigeria? Everyday you see the sunrise in Nigeria is cause for joy. Madness does not even begin to describe the state of things. If that plane had experienced a mechanical fault on approach what we will be talking about today is mass loss of life!! |

It's very unlikely that she developed cold feet.That's highly unlikely considering that brides to be on the wedding day are normally escorted to church with a large entourage of family,friends,bridesmaid, etc etc. Also in the unlikely event the whole entourage was abducted by aliens from Mars, someone would have alerted everybody via mobile phone or other means. The problem with Faith is that it's very foundation are a paradox! And every faith by that notion is actually unreasonable! Think about it for a moment. Questions: 1. What is your faith?(i.e religion) 2. Does your faith not teach you that salvation(paradise,heaven,etc)is only via it's adherence? 3. How did you come to believe in your faith? (i.e religion) 4. How can you prove that your faith is the only way to salvation? Answers: 1. Your faith is irrelevant all peoples of belief have different concepts of it,so how is one better than the other? Is it by who came first? Is it by their doctrines? They all teach goodness and moral principles and life after death! So which is better,or truer or the correct one? If none of them is,does that not mean that none of them really matters? Buddhism was founded in 520BC long before Christianity in India Christianity was founded in 30AD in Israel Confucianism was founded in 471BC in China Islam was founded in 622AD in Saudi Arabia Jainism was founded in 550BC in Eastern India Judaism was founded in 1300BC long long before Christianity Sikhism was founded in 1500AD Taoism was founded in 550BC 2. If you are reading this,there is a 99% chance that if you believe in a faith system it is simply because you where born into a family,community or society that practices the faith of your belief! If your where born somewhere else in under different circumstances and faith, chances are you would be a believer of a different faith. Fact! In summary Faith is good for society as a whole,it gives people things to strive towards and helps keep human behaviour in check and under control to a great degree. If we did not have faith systems the world would be a wild and dangerous place as people would have no fear of karma and repercussions. But ultimately faith is a construct of the human mind by men with greater intellect than their peers. It was reason not faith that brought us advances in medicine,science,technology and generally every field of human endeavour. In the end reason and not faith is the ultimate arbiter of truth! @ Poster my heart really goes out to you. But if it's any consolation know that you are not alone in this plight. It is rife world wide and i mean world wide. There are people in Nigeria who finished University and Service YEARS ago but are still to find gainful employment. There are people here in the U.K after completing first degree and masters degree can only find cleaning jobs or jobs as security guards in supermarkets. There are people in Spain and Greece that with work experience and THREE different degrees are unemployed or hawking portable Chinese electronics in traffic.There are people in the U.S that were high level officials in business in Nigeria with degree but now work as taxi drivers or care assistants. My point @ poster is this. We live in dire times that can only get worse and while i know you are suffering know that millions suffer with you. The one advantage Nigeria has is that you can start a small enterprise with small capital and still make some kind of livelihood. I would suggest you explore some type of trade(while still looking for work). Even if the earning you make is not enough for you to pay rent with. Because you live with family it will help increase the money you have in your pocket,it will also boost your confidence and potentially spring other opportunities from people you meet and interact with. Sitting idle at home while waiting for a job can be soul destroying. The brain and mind are like muscles,if you don't use them they will wither away and it becomes harder to become productive and employed or employable. I sincerely wish you all the best buddy. A lot of commentators here clearly do not know what they are commenting about! Let me elaborate. 1. To join Freemasonry you FIRST have to be recommended by a current Freemason. 2. Membership is open to ALL except WOMEN. You are only required to believe in a God. There is no specification for Jehovah, Allah or Buddha! 3. On the subject of Islam there are no clear rules barring a muslim that i know. However during your initiation ceremony a sword is placed on your chest and a “BIBLE”(old testament) is used when you swear your oath of allegiance. You are also informed during the rites of the Masons link to King Solomon. This applies in any lodge in any country. Also the lodge of your initiation remains your MOTHER lodge regardless of if your travel. 4. On the subject of Occultism. People are mostly lead by ignorance and stuff they see in movies. In 99.9% of Masonry meetings all you do is read bulletins, have dinner, drink, socialise, network and pay your membership fees. Having said that i am told that when you become a senior member then you may join other groups that are not Masonic by origin but may have esoteric interests. 5. There are 33 degrees or levels in Freemasonry. From Entered Apprentice to Soveriegn Grand Inspector General. There is absolutely nothing Evil or Satanic about Freemasonry. Granted there is a lot of symbolism and ceremony that stretches back hundreds of years but it is nothing to be feared. If there is any issue is that you get bored of sitting round with people old enough to be your grand father and the constant drain on your finances that is the only evil i can say exists in Freemasonry. What utter rubbish! Are you an animal or do you live in the dark ages. It's your type of mentality that paints the picture of Africans being backward people. Whatever their grievances genuine or not,there is no justification for jungle justice. People's properties have being either stolen or destroyed. People made homeless and sent to the hospital. Who made the locals judge,jury and executioner? Did they take the time to identify the guilty from the innocent? No one is making excuses like you are saying,we are condemning the criminality of the mob. zaibatsu: As usual we will keep trying to defend the indefensible. While the mob action by the South Africans was wrong, their greviances are genuine. Why can't we ever tell ourselves the unvarnished truth? Rural South Africans are generally very Xenophobic(hate foreigners). They jump on any excuse to violate visitors in their midst. This is well documented historically. If it’s not Nigerians doing drugs, they will say it’s Zimbabweans taking their jobs, or Zambians doing to much business or Ethiopians being greedy. This type of behaviour is seasonal in South Africa where locals go on a rampage, beating, looting and killing foreigners for one excuse or the other. It is a shame because all of us other Africans supported the South Africans when they were being crushed by apartheid and white racism in their country. Now the shoe is on the other foot and their fellow Africans are now scum. South Africans should be ashamed of themselves! Relevance, Differentiation, Credibility and Consistency The aforementioned concepts are necessary to have a good brand. Another simple way to view a brand from a business perspective is to see it as a platform with which a business can establish relationships between current and prospective costumers.Having a brand helps the business to increase market share. Brands help businesses charge premiums on products or services. Every other process you know like creating a logo,initial market research, advertising, marketing campaigns,sales promotions, etc all exist for the furtherance of the brand. A brand is actually an intangible business asset. In the business world there are many examples where by a business buys another business for a price that is higher than the cost of all the purchased business' physical assets. We should all stop trying to deny what the reality of the situation is. Yesterday some Nairalanders were putting op posts denying that they are Nigerians etc. We have just found out that these two are yoruba men born in Nigeria and then emigrated to the U.K! My point is,they are very much Nigerians and we as a nation need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves some very hard questions. Why do we seem to breed some of the worlds most vile characters? Why do we consistently seem to be known for more bad things than good ones. My condolence to the family of the slain soldier. Someone who goes to fight for his country doesn't expect to be butchered on the streets of his own country when he comes home. The fact that this happened not far from where i live has made it all the more poignant. I believe i speak for all sane Nigerians and people of Nigerian background when i say we condemn the acts of the raving lunatic that is Michael Adeboloja and people like him. The vast majority of Nigerians i know are hard working,tax paying productive members of society. Instead of putting our heads down in shame,we should stand and distance ourselves from people that continually drag the name of Nigeria through mud. R.I.P Lee Rigby.Lee Rigby was 25years old and a father of one!I pray God grants your family the strength to bear the loss. And to Michael Adeboloja i say may you rot in jail!! Amen!!

I beg to differ. The menace of Boko Haram has further torn Nigeria apart. Especially along the lines of Northerners versus everybody else! You see Nigerians are not unwise and have seen Boko Haram for what it really is,i.e a brutal political tool sponsored in secret by some elements of the Northern elite and Northern leadership. Also Nigerians have also watched in dismay while their fellow so called North-Nigerians have failed to rally to the support of Christians and Non-muslims murdered in their hundreds whilst attending church or at home. The mind of the average non-northern Nigerian now is one that says to hell with the north and their terrorist groups. There is no love lost,as the average Nigerian understands this battle is not about Islam or westernization but about the seat of Power and where ruler-ship lies! 1 Like |

I would take a holistic(all encompassing) approach. Like killing fire you need to remove the fuel that powers it. 1.Education Instead of the bribery method being used in the N/Delta i would target the illiteracy and poverty that is so rife in the North. By subsidizing or offering free education till secondary school level. Employment 2. I will offer incentives(tax breaks,subsidies,) for factories to be built that would offer employment. Radicalization. 3. I will make it hard to obtain planning permission for building worship houses(church or mosque)if there is already one in the local area. 4.I will offer huge final rewards on anyone reporting radical clerics. 5.I will come down heavy on local leaders that promote touts. |
