hmmmn. not that i am a fan of the current nairaland homepage (but why do i keep coming to it even after i've packed my bags and traffic is thin)

the new suggestion (while simple) also looks thin on activity.

I love Google not for the looks but for the purposeful activity I perceive from simply looking at my search results. It gets me to my destination in good time and shows me other areas i might want to look at next time i am on holiday.

Same thing with facebook and twitter. I guess I never bothered about what nairaland looks like but was satisfied with the functionality.

The new suggestion still needs tweaking beyond simplicity, there is need for purpose (presentation of content and intuitive navigation tools to get u there asap)
Christianity Etc › Re: Satguru And Pastor Adeboye by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 6:16pm On Apr 24, 2009
Religion, Politics and the Occult are very much entwined in both ancient and modern societies,

It won't be the first time a widely popular evangelical preacher is alleged to have roots in the occult (na today)

How much do you know of Christmas that you cannot wait to celebrate it, how much do you know of the Virgin mary that she is easier to talk to than Jesus who pegged on the cross for you.

In a restricted sense occult is understood to be an interference with the usual course of physical nature by apparently inadequate means (recitation of formularies, gestures, mixing of incongruous elements, and other mysterious actions), the knowledge of which is obtained through secret communication with the force underlying the universe (God, the Devil, the soul of the world, etc.);

it is the attempt to work miracles not by the power of God, gratuitously communicated to man, but by the use of hidden forces beyond man's control. Its advocates, despairing to move the Deity by supplication, seek the desired result by evoking powers ordinarily reserved to the Deity.

It is a corruption of religion that appears decadent rather than of civilized society. There is nothing to show that in Babylon, Greece, and Rome the use of occult decreased as these nations progressed; on the contrary, it increased as they declined. It is not true that "religion is the despair of occult"; in reality, occult is but a disease of religion.

I grant you this, there are a few of Pastors, Preachers, Miracle-workers, Healers, Men of God that have not dabbled or are not deep in the occult in Nigeria of Today

The Daddy of many nations, is going through a fiery cleansing, it is only natural that when you reach certain heights, you must face tribulation,it can only kill you or bring you down. if you survive, your Glory is in Heaven.

So let him face the trials and tribulation, he won't be the first

Christianity Etc › Re: Will God Forgive Devil If Devil Apologise To Him ? by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 10:45am On Apr 24, 2009
Raise your conscious intelligence to the required level tongue , it is not all about God forgiving the Devil for his sins, it is deeper than that while both 'spiritual' entities exists in fact, they represent for our (pitiable state of religious-piety) consciousness, the equitable balance between 2 different-sides (often thot of as opposing) of human nature. it is the origin (or the end) of our purpose in this life.

Devil must exist and God must exist, neither can be extinguished permanently because it will result in self-destruction. Which is why the Devil is doomed to burn in hell for all eternity rather than die and be done with for good.

So the simple concept of Forgiveness for the Devil (my friend) is not on the menu

Thank God it is safe, back in boarding school, i got loads of dreams in which i ate to my full, because food was served by the string in those holocaust days in the jungle.

I had dreams of visiting this restaurant and eating whatever and however i wanted. when they'd ask for payment, i'd tell them, "I'll pay you tomorrow" they wised up one day and refused to serve me,so i bursted, but it is my very own dream so why are you asking me to pay when you are in my dreams, Haba!!! give me food jooo. grin

Good to know all that dream-eating did not sell my soul outright

So he changes his mind, do you need anyone to tell you the imp is just posturing, we have gotten so used to the Nigerian Soap, any aimless attempt at suspense will elicit the keenest of attention from the idle populace . we are so drunk on political drama the actors simply wonder in awe how their daft performance is seen as an epoch-making event

I sooo love Nigerians, how easy it is for you lot to be distracted from key issues.

Is it not the same EFCC that claim they have lost damning documents implicating OBJ governors (Ibori, Odili, Duke and Kalu)

EFCC Mission that it continually demonstrates its failure or lack of will to execute or willingness undermine

The EFCC will curb the menace of the corruption that constitutes the cog in the wheel of progress; protect national and foreign investments in the country; imbue the spirit of hard work in the citizenry and discourage ill gotten wealth; identify illegally acquired wealth and confiscate it; build an upright workforce in both public and private sectors of the economy and; contribute to the global war against financial crimes.

Why is our memory as short as our noses.

Everyday in Nigeria is an episode in nauseating corruption at high and low levels, Why is the EFCC not looking at the Halliburton Case , they feel it does not merit their attention at the moment , or their bleach bleach oga is on the take

You do not need such credentials to join the Police, SSS, RRS, EFCC, DMI or OPC grin

While relevant in the Nigeria of today, you must seriously review the reality of our situation when it comes to Security-Related employment and what is deemed relevant skills or requirements.

We have got Auditors for Financial Institutions (Banks and the likes)
We have got Forensic Experts in the Police Force (i doubt their competence though)
We have got Jazz-men in the Vigilante Units (I doubt their sanity not their traditional competence)
We have got prophets in the Churches ( i take their take with a pinch of salt and lost of garlic)

What you might really want to look at is forming your own Private Agency.

The reason our Police Force still have sooooo many unsolved crimes (Dele Giwa, Bola Ige, Funso Williams, Clifford Orji, Guru Maharaji, Tafa Balogun's Missing billions) just goes to show you that while it demonstrates a gap in our Security Practices, I think that gap is intentional, you might be seen as anti-progressive.

Don't let the outlook discourage you

Webmasters › Re: 100 Best Developers In Nigeria? Says Who? by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 10:58am On Apr 01, 2009
IMHO i'd say the list needs to be organized using the criteria, which developer (or programmer or fly-by-night copy-paster) has made the most money of non-hardware IT projects.

Because I got to meet one IT guy (Software, webmaster/designer/developer/architect) when i offered some insight and pitched a solution i was working on that was way beyond what he had, he simply stopped me in my tracks by saying he has had international experience and from that he knows that I think i think i am good but when he shows me what he has done, i'd be humbled. he gave me a glimpse and I almost puked at his hottest selling VB6 Investment Software, believe me, it goes against every best practice you can pull out of the book when it comes to development/design.

and yet, this guy rakes in nothing less than 3 million in retainership fees from different stockbrokers in Lagos alone. my heart literally refused to waste its time pumping blood to my brains since i could not pull that amount in yearly on selling my work. and I am far better than him when it comes to the nuts and bolts, so what is the problem here.

He still makes more money than i do selling utimo crap. and still the money keeps coming and clients keep complaining but say he is the best there is for now.

So if you are on that list, you had better be making more money than this guy (who i refuse to mention cos i am sure some of his staff are on nairaland)

grin

Hello NLanderz

Owing to the Global Financial Crisis, my sense of logic is skewed to taking shortcuts and it is killin my ability to code straight. grin

Please take a look at this scenario and help suggest what approach to take

SCENARIO
The project is built around an SMS service that sends a WAPPush Bookmark to a gsm subscriber's phone based on requests for content.
Requests are made following the usual Code to Shortcode e.g 2009 (msg txt) to 33111 (shortcode) and a content matching the code or other scripted behavior is applied to return a message with link (WAPPush bookmark) after the user has been charged a fee for downloading the content.

CHALLENGES
1: Prevent subscriber from forwarding it to friends to download without paying (Naija people with awuf mentality)
2: Prevent subscriber from downloading it more than once without paying for it (Naija Companies with greedy mentality)

OTHER DETAILS
Message routing runs on MS SQL
Content Delivery is on ASP running IIS6 on Windows Server 2003

The project is in test mode so you won't be charged for downloading content.

Send 2009 to 33111 to get a sample jpeg and help me solve the challenge today

Thanks

@otokx

The problem with 9ja is not the "good" ideas but the fact that you can't build a building in mid air. We have little or no foundation in this country and the government is always quick to shift its responsibility to the private sector who turn around to extort money from the poor citizens while giving the rich free access
You have said it all in a few words, we are building castles in mid-air, that is why all our projects crash like NIGCOMSAT-1 imagine the bleedin minister saying it supports the 7-point (or how many is it now) agenda to attack development on all fronts at the same time. imagine crawling, running, walking and shaggin at the same time, bound to be disastrous

Thank GOD for Global Financial Crisis, Glory be to u oh Lord.  smiley

At least oil money is fast disappearing ($35 to 1 barrel of crude), Major currencies ($, € and ₤) are gang-raping the Naira like a hooker in a bad corner.

We are producing jack-shit from pure water to bottled groundnuts. and have a workforce (desk workers) the size of one LGA in Lagos. A political class focused on wanton chopping (you will be shocked anymore at financial crimes deemed "un-attractive" these days by the EFCC).

Soon enough, our Foreign reserves will be depleted, our oil will be worth shit (Thank God) our Naira will be in the millions denomination (Thank Soludo) and all multinationals will leave along with the high-paying jobs.

IGP will be stranded with a morally demoralized police force (who have guns with live ammo) who will either turn on him as they have turned on civilians.

Baba go-slow will be facing stern looks from the seriously jobless military (A coup is more likely than a recovery from this recession)

Inflation will ensure that Nigerians never travel abroad for holidays, have you tried to travel from lagos to london lately
Christianity Etc › Re: Anyone Help With Rituals, Ife,juju, black Magic Etc. by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 10:20am On Mar 03, 2009
@Poster, do not lose hope. there is surely light at the begining of the tunnel for you.

If you are unaware, the quickest way to your goal (without getting fleeced by unscrupulous quacks) is in this order

1: Join a Society Cult (Ogboni-Classic, or ROF -Reformed Ogboni Fratenity, or Freemason-Traditional)
They are better organized than Shrines, off-the-shelf charms and local babalawos.

2: Visit these two villages, Auchi in Edo state and Ogoja in Cross River State. granted you are willing to undergo personal sacrifices in time, money, morals and humanity, there are several (few actually) who will stake your life on a contract (terms not mentioned) and believe me, you will be sailing away like Tony Anenih. IBB has an Ogoja link as well (you can confirm from any politician you have access to). U can also stack your loyalties across different elemental forces operating at different levels.

3: Visit Nigeria's Top 5 pastors (in your own opinion), i can assure you their popularity has roots in the occult. even demons can mention Jesus (ain't nuttin wrong with bowing down these days). Trust me, they will be the last to admit. I am sure you will find their names on some register. no doubt their fruits bear their origins (Matthew 7:16)

4: If what you seek is for the short-term and your needs are not as heavy as your ambitions. by all means go to Agege, or Jankara or Ikorodu or Badagary/Cotonu (If you are coming to Lagos). there are dozens of occult priests who can help you for a little piece of yourself. (avoid church-style people they refer to as prophets, they are actually sub-contractors)

5: If all else fails, then you have only one option (the toughest I grant you). become born-again, not this moi-moi, church and every-crusade-going born-again ooh. (or teh pastor worshiping types) You will need to be purely Militant, precisely devoted and completely dedicated to constant fasting and prayer (to build your own arsenal of spiritual equipment). you will be under constant travails, but if you keep at it, you will come on top and get everything you desire. (The rules are the same for Occultic and Spiritual, just that one is quicker with long-term pains, the other is longer with enduring gains)

Whichever you decide. you are on your own, the extent of any man's success is defined by the size of the risk he is willing to take at the get-go

TIPS
Do not be as bold as your post. take time to visit these places, Churches, bars, Yoruba Boat Clubs, Yoruba Tennis Clubs, see if you stillhave a grand-parent pre-civil war, they have information on how they survived it. (wild-shot but who knows)

Hope this information is enough.

Continue with the gisting because the global financial meltdown has not hit you just yet, wait till you add the following

1: Dropping Crude prices
2: Dropping forex reserves
3: increasing inflation (increased
4: rising naira-dollar forex-rates
5: rising interest rates
6: poor power production
7: poor international exports
8: Aimless political class
9: mindless illiterate citizenry (75% of Nigeria is illiterate)
10: Poor Security (with a mindless and corrupt, ill-educated IGP)
11: Demoralized Military class
12: Armed robbers hit by the scarcity of cash.

The Idea is not novel, yes it is necessary but are we sure that the CCTV initiative is just not another 'blue elephant' scheme, foisted on our intelligence to make it seem as if the reigning government has plans to fight crime.

1: Security Cameras such as ones installed require some investment in large data storage and trained security agents and IT staff.
2: They also require to a (large extent) a de-centralized Police force that can independently manage crime in each state or LG with a detailed profile of criminals and their movement around Nigeria while sharing information with other security agencies and government bodies across Nigeria

I heard we have a little over 340,000 police men in the Nigeria Police Force, what percentage is trained to evaluate data from CCTVs and other modern day security technologies.

I would rather a bunch of police checkpoints than CCTV cameras, at least it should deter the robbers briefly enough to escape the scene before the police do and leave you behind.

AS we always say, Let us sit-down and watch
