Family › Re: Can Children Be Mentored By Absentee Dads? by lastpage: 3:41pm On Jan 25, 2010
Now hear this:
Ann Coutler is American renowned Author. In her book Guilty: Liberals Victims and their Assault on America", l quote:

""Here is the lottery ticket that single mothers are handing their innocent children by choosing to raise them without fathers: Controlling for socioeconomic status, race, and place of residence, the strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison is that he was raised by a single parent.
By 1996, 70 percent of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy-two percent of juvenile murderers and 60 percent of rapists come from single-mother homes.

70% of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents, and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers. Girls raised without fathers are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to end up divorced.
A 1990 study by the Progressive Policy Institute showed that after controlling for single motherhood, the difference between black and white crime rates disappeared.

Various studies have come up with slightly different numbers, but all the figures are grim. According to the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, children from single-parent families account for 63 percent of all youth suicides, 70 percent of all teenage pregnancies, 71 percent of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse, 80 percent of all prison inmates, and 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children.

A study cited in the Village Voice produced similar numbers.
It found that children brought up in single-mother homes 'are five times more likely to commit suicide, nine times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances, 14 times more likely to commit despoil (for the boys), 20 times more likely to end up in prison, and 32 times more likely to run away from home.'
Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts.

, Many of these studies, for example, are from the 1990s, when the percentage of teenagers raised by single parents was lower than it is today. In 1990, 28 percent of children under eighteen were being raised in one-parent homes (mother or father), and 71 percent were being raised in two-parent homes. By 2005, more than one-third of all babies born in the United States were illegitimate. That's a lot of social problems coming.

Imagine an America with 70 percent fewer juvenile delinquents, 70 percent fewer teenage births, 63 to 70 percent fewer teenage suicides, and 70 percent to 90 percent fewer runaways and you will appreciate what the sainted single mothers have accomplished." -- P.37-38

You will note that we do not read about adopted children filling up the prisons, welfare rolls, and runaway shelters. Adopted children are no worse off -- and, indeed, are generally better off -- than non-adopted children." -- P.43

"A 2008 study led by Georgia State University economist Benjamin Scafidi found that single mothers -- unwed or divorced -- cost the US taxpayer $112 billion every year." -- P.51

"A Cornell University study found that unwed mothers are 30 percent less likely to marry than other single women, " -- P.70

These are results of research and statistical analysis so, no one should "crucify the messanger" but you are free to criticaly analyze the result and rebuff it, if you have superior FACTS or arguments.
Now, NOT ALL SINGLE MOTHERS ARE BAD, some even have no choice, with a drunkard or an abuser for a husband! In some cases, its the man that left, for some reasons, rightly or wrongly!

The unenviable ones are those who turn "single parenthood" into a kind of FAD, especially in the western world where their is "financial incentive" for being a single mother! We all know about "Single Parent Allowance" now or dont we? grin

My thrust is that if possible, we should all avoid single parenting like a plague, which it is, by doing everything possible to keep the family intact.
but then, "westernization and divorce-for-free lawyers" no go gree-us

According to Wikipe@dia
"With the majority of the prison population being men, "women are left in free society to raise families and contend with ex-prisoners returning home after release."[4] Children raised in single-parent homes are less supervised which leads to less emphasis on education and self-determination. The result of this situation is that society is damaged and has to take on the financial burden of children growing up in crime ridden neighborhoods and going to prison. When a family member is arrested, the family loses not only that person's income, but also acquire additional expenses involved in keeping contact with the incarcerated family member.[3] Mothers then have to leave the home and children behind to take on more jobs in order to provide the basic needs for the family. As a result, the children are left behind to fend for themselves and get involved with the wrong people who will guide them down the path that their incarcerated family member went down."

Christianity Etc › Re: Is It Proper To Label Pastors As Crooks? by lastpage: 7:27am On Jan 24, 2010
A little comparison:

-In the 70's and before then, the "not so christianly" Catholics came to Africa, among other things, gave us Free education and free "dispensary/medicals", even when they dont preach Tithe and prosperity or miraculous, sudden wealth.
*Our own emergent Pentecostal and other indigenous churches collected all manner of offerings (including varsity building projects contribution) and built expensive schools that only the children of "thieves and looters" could attend, while the poor church members just dey wonder-wonder!

-In Europe and the America,  Business Parks and Industrial Estates sprung-up everywhere. Employment went down, quality of life improved.
*In Nigeria, Industries and Warehouses closed down BUT RE-OPENED AS CHURCHES, unemployment shot up, poverty and disease increased, infact as of today, life has no value!.

- In the West, less people go to church (Among the whites especially), they lived longer and enjoyed all the needs of life like Good housing, roads, food, social cushions, functional hospitals, one would most likely die of constipation from too much food huh
*In Nigeria, every street has about 10churches, all with P.A. speakers trying to out-shout each other! BUT the citizens keep getting poorer, roads get worse, ordinary tap water we had when the  missionaries were here has dried-up!! Even President has to hop to Germany/Saudi each time he has a cough grin People sleep under the bridge, children still die of preventable illness, people die of starvation huh

-The white-man's Pastor leaves his country and goes to donate in Haiti, in Kenya, Sudan, in Nigerian villages and anywhere he thinks "help" is needed. Even even donates towards Muslims and people who dont share his faith.
*Our Nigerian Pastors (and the ones that get exported abroad) all run away from setting-up church in our remote villages! They all congregate in Abuja, Lagos and P/harcourt like its only inthe major cities that we have sinners (except that is where the money is grin smart crooks!). They would rather not turn the other cheek except preach fire-fire-fire and retalliation. Even in Jos, we have seen our level of religious "tolerance" like Jesus preached!!

-The missionary Pastors l grew-up knowing were as poor as the poorest man in my hood. No car, no suit, just a bike and a jacket. We all ate the same thing and lived like one except he does not look like us.
*Our Nigerian Pastors live in high-walled, prison-like mansions (like some looting money-bag?), drive the flashiest of cars if he is yet to acquire his private Jet, has body-guards and have men and women (the muguns) worshiping him like he was a god! He looked like us but never was one of us, at least after the offerings started rolling-in!)

MY QUESTION IS: WHAT BRAND OF CHRISTIANITY DO OUR PASTORS PRACTICE?

Okay, l can only ask questions, l cant "judge" them Pastors, like our thieving Politicians, they also have immunity (na someone here raise that point o).

The painful aspect is those "cavemen" that never ventured outside and taught there was never light anywhere outside the cave!

"Religion is truly the opium (or Paragah  grin) of my people,, ,, , and they Perish for lack of Wisdom" (l did not say knowledge, mind you

Abeg Pastor, free dis people now?, abeg!

The old man (in his 80's now) married 4 wives and each of them have twins, one had it twice!

I will suggest you let the old man give you a "practical demonstration class" with your Madam when you are ready to have Twins.

But be warned, he might snatch your wife becos legend has it that "once him reach there, she will always come back for more".

So give it more than one thought grin
Christianity Etc › Re: Is It Proper To Label Pastors As Crooks? by lastpage: 10:36pm On Jan 23, 2010
I will not like to take-up issues personally but l can not resist the urge to respond to a few outlandish assertions here-in!
For example:
@joagbaje
have you not seen what churches are doing? rehabilitating prisoners, reaching out to motherless baby homes. etc.
If these Pastors have done as they were sent by Jesus instead of preaching the "Gospel of Miraculous/Sudden Wealth", majority of these people would not ave gone to prison in the first place!
If Pastoral preachings were as pointed in the right direction, instead of focusing on Tithe and Money-Money all the time, every baby would have a father and mother caring for them!

Now, l will like to ask a few questions:

1. What was Jesus's response when he was accused? Did he go about repudiating the allegations (as seen here) or said "You have spoken"

2. Was Jesus the one keeping and spending the money that was collected by the church of disciples in his days? Did he have access to the money?

3. When the Bible says "By their fruits you will know them", referring to those who claim to be followers of christ.
Question is: what is the fruit of MOST of our current day pastors?

4. Is the Church, whose property and continued existence is financed by the daily contribution of all church members, THE PRIVATE PROPERTY OF THE PASTOR if not, how come some register Church properties in the Pastors name, like a personal estate? Husband= G.O, Pastor-Founder. Wife: Wife= G.O, Pastor and Deputy 2nd-in-command shocked

5. Why is there always a very deadly battle for succession when the Pastor dies when it was supposed to be sorted out spiritually by God "anointing a Joshua in place of Moses"?
6. When Jesus was alive, it took an inner caucus member of his church to identify him (Judas), showing that  he was "just like each of them". If you compare that to our current day Pastors, is it their shinny Italian brogues shoe, Armani 3-piece suit with matching Silk Tie, long list of exotic cars and their carved, gold plaited chair not their main hallmark? Are they in any way like Jesus?

7. How come in a country supposedly over-flowing with "miracle Pastors and christians", 90% of church members can not even have the most basic things of life (food & accommodation) while the Pastors live as if "money does not know what to buy again"?

8. Is it how wealthy you are that is a measure of whether you serve God or not (like the testimony of that our friend on page one grin)? Can we not serve God, even if we are poor as long as we have"Daily Bread"? Is it not this misplaced mentality (encouraged my our prosperity Pastors) that drive otherwise good christians to want to "make it at all cost" thereby bringing reproach unto the body of christ

Finally, why is it that Jesus rebuked those who abused his fathers house, he brandished "bulala horsewhip", scattered their tables an chased them away BUT today, our level of Christianity is measured by how much we remain silent and conforming
to whatever our Pastors do or say, even when some are glaringly unscriptural?

Looters and kleptomaniacs sit at specially reserved front rows in church and get titles from Pastor while poor folks who hope in God are not even remembered as church members (until they "hit some loot" and get suddenly elevated!)

I like to learn and whatever l am taught in church, l compare it to what the Bible itself says.

Civil Comments will be welcomed but if you still choose to engage in name-calling, you're still welcomed after-all, "By their fruits we shall know them" grin

Twice l have penned and posted my opinion (yesterday and just now) on this topic, and in each case, l see it there briefly and then it gets yanked off!

Without being presumptuous, IS THIS DELIBERATE ON YOUR PART OR IS SOMETHING GOING ON THAT DOES NOT WANT A CONTRARY OPINION POSTED ON THE ISSUE?

I will appreciate your immediate comments and a restore of my post.

Okay, at times, we run the risk of "over-generalization", because because one father was not up and running does not mean( other) fathers have no use in a family setting.
If truth be said, God who made them "Man and Woman" must know better!

Most "single parent" homes are fraught with all sorts of danger, especially the ones that resulted from a divorce!

I totally agree with the opinion of "Kenny.net; Children need to see both parents and regularly too!

There was a time when dogs eat other dogs but the current dogs have evolve to become the cuddly dogs we keep as pet now
I've watched animals eat other animals, even crabs but crabs only eat a "dead crab"!

I think te dogs of those early days (and crabs) have evolved much better than the people in that video.

Even God that labored to create humans (and the mothers that carried the pregnancy of those mauled by that driver) will be at ease to understand what happened.

I think the topic would have made more impact if we remove the phrase "absentee father" and substitute it with "irresponsible father"?

My little experience: I have a "senior-senior" brother whose friend works with the U.N.
He is hardly at home! He was one of the first people l saw who bought mobile phone for every little kid in his house (so he can speak to his children).
He only comes home on holidays but when he is home, "he is fully engaged at home".
He cooks, he drives kids to school, he gardens and does about anything a "responsible father" is expected to do.
He was the one that even taught me a few things about internet, in those days when internet was still like a miracle grin

To cut a long story short, though his children wished he was around 24/7, his wife did "thanks-giving in church" mid last year when the last of their 3kids got married, she is a Medical Doctor and the two elder brothers are Comms. Engineer and a Masters degree lawyer respectively!

But l have also seen irresponsible fathers that are "present all the time" but have "little" positive contribution, apart from instilling fear in the kids when they want to get out of hand.
I've seen one that is a complete embarrassment to his children (drinks and fall into public gutters, till early sunday morning and the kids have to "shamefully" pick him home grin)

So, being "present" is not enough, the "presence' must be "effective" and l tell you, a "Present and Effective" father is the best thing that can happen to any kid.
Mothers have a different role in the life of children that fathers can not fill,
Fathers too, have their roles in childrens lives that Mothers can not fill.

THE TWO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE COMPLIMENTING EACH OTHER.

Now, l have noticed and tried to "statistically analyze" the comments so far!
Majority of those comments that seem to disparage or make nonsense of the "effect of fathers" in children's lives, COME FROM WOMEN! (except for one or two women!)

I encourage you to go back to page 1 and walk your way forwards and lets see what you come of with.

Why is this?
Is it that women are trying to sell the idea (especially women who grew up in broken homes or are themselves "broken" as far as marriage is concerned), that their children's father is inconsequential in the lives of their children?

I have all sort of phrases like "sperm donor", "deadbeats", e.t.c., being substituted for their children's father!

Well, statistics have also shown that children raised by single parents (male or female, but especially females) end up worse as time goes by.

I will paste some "NEWs" for our single parents to read.
I dey come! grin

Meen, this is shocking!

I have taken my time to read what "harakiri" wrote, l was particularly looking for where he made reference to "Sugabelly".
Maybe someone else would help point it out because l cant find it!

But her violent and personal response, coupled with all the insults SHOWS HE MUST HAVE HIT A VERY RAW NERVE WITH HER grin shocked

The guy only expressed his own personal opinion on the matter, just as each of us has (and we are all entitled to our different opinion) so whats all the frothing and foaming at the mouth for? huh

I hope "real women" (and men too) would be careful where they take their advise from, so as not to be misled.

Lawyer,
What does one do in a situation where the survey plan presented by the family is one showing not just your 'individual plot' but the whole acres of plot allocated to the family by the government (according to the omo-oniles)? And on that survey, you have a stamp saying "free from acquisition" grin

Of course, you are now asked to do your own "individual survey" with a caveat of using their own supplied surveyor! shocked

Will this do in your opinion ? And what kind of verification can one do in this type of situation?

funny things like "man can marry man", "women can marry women"! OMG cool cool

For me too, Danny Shittu stood tall.
@kivolander
For the coach, I don't think Amodu is good enough to handle the super eagles. As long as a Nigeria coach is in charge, I tell u that there'll always be people (NFF members and even government) influence in selection of players but this would have been different if it was a foreign coach.
Now, l am almost amazed when guys come-up and start yawning about a foreign coach!
I know some people still suffer from color complex and slavery mentality

but P-L-E-A-S-E wasn Berti Voghts (Nigerians coach to the last ACN competition) from Ibadan or Kaduna or Onitsha?

How foreign can a foreign coach be, if That German was not one?
And tell me what happened when he was our coach, yes, ell me the wonders that happened?

Point is, our system is bad, corruption, mis-management and lack of foresight is what is killing our game.

Maybe you guys should contribute money and employ Guss Hiddink or Arsene Wenger or even Sir Alex and lets see what happens, instead of all this whinning about foreign coach

We need to start from the grassroots and get those leeches in the glass house out of there, fast.
Sports › Re: Nigeria Vs Benin At Nations Cup: 1 - 0 by lastpage: 6:58pm On Jan 16, 2010
Nigeria just broke Jail!
# points is good but this team is going no where.
They dont have the energy or drive to move forward.

Dont blame Amodu or just Yakubu.

Overall, the team is poor and that is a reflection of the corruption and mis-management that goes on in the NFF (and the whole country, in a wider perspective)

We keep recycling old Politicians and l am not surprised we are recycling very tired old players like Yakubu an Kanu.

Any serious country that wants to play good football and make waves will have two tings which Nigeria does not have:

1.) A viable local league
2.) Football Academies and collegiate football (like Principal's Cup of old) to capture talents at the grass root.

So please find something else to do and stop blaming one player or the coach, Nigeria is just what  it is: a failed state. End of story.

BTW: I must heap praises on Danny Shittu. Himself and that Nwosu guy are wonderful. Odewingwe got tired towards the end but still tried.

The only reason Mikel is still playing is his reputation as a "Chelsea player"! He cant even string a pass!!

As long as we have that glaring thief as INEC chairman, expect worse things to happen!

That is why Iyiola Omisore can win a Senatorial seat election even when he was in prison on murder rap of the erstwhile Attorney General, Bola Ige.
That is why a dead or brain dead Yara-dull will win the next Presidential election and run Naija from the grave

As long we we have that Alli Baba as INEC chairman.

Prof Wuru-Wuru, should have been sacked and imprisoned for fraud and treason, a long time ago!

But then, its PDP now, abi no be them?

Only armed struggle can change the life of Nigerians, not these sham elections that are rigged in favor of PDP

We both know u are not referring to their company but rather their private assets.

The important it is that "that your prayer" is FOR YOU!
A sighted man does not need prayers asking for eyes from God, does he?

I think you should not be praying for others when you yourself needs such prayers!

Anyway, thanks for your unsolicited advise.
You dont need to belabor the issue since its just an advise or do you want something else out of it?

@Kobojunkie
No at all. If anyone feels so, then l tender an unreserved apology.
And no one should unnecessarily stoke ethnic bigotry by implying so.

@metal-gong
Well, you asked a very good question. . .The Biafra civil war events, the betrayals on the part of Biafran neighbours and all the nuances of the war have taught we the Igbos a lesson.
To be frank with you, the Yorubas should never expect the Igbos to be in alliance with them in any political initiation, even some of the Niger deltans. As I said earlier, the killing of Ndigbo has produced at least 600,000 Authur Nzeribes within a sample of 1 million Igbos, these Authur Nzeribes are always ready to pay back Awolowo and his kinsmen accordingly. . . .
You all chose the pre-civil war ONE NIGERIA, then why the recent protest.  . . Good morning to you all.
Thank you for your candid response. I like your frankness.
I know this is true and it is something we all shy away from saying and for this, you've earn a lot of respects.

Now, l am not Awolowo and You're not Ojukwu. Those things you mentioned up there truly happened but l guess most of us would take decisions, to the best of our knowledge.

I am wondering if "Awolowo was alive today", whether he will take the same decision he took back then, in the light of current development?

Those who exploit that "retributive position" today, do not differentiate between Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa.

Having said that and in line with the discussions l do have with my Igbo colleagues, l want to ask:
1.) What does it take to redress the injustice of a past generation?
2.) Has this alliance with the "enemy of our past enemy" bettered the situation of the Igbo people (No Igbo has ever been President, not even the alliance can help that!)
3.) What do you think, in your own opinion, is the opinion of the North, about the Igbo people? Do they see you as a political ally or a political love-peddler (no pun intended please). I think they also see & view 'Jonathan Goodluck' as an Igbo, somehow.
4.) In the interest of the next generation, can we not forgive the past and forge a common future, that will better both sides of the divide?
5.) Which is better?: To forgive and work for the betterment of our regions (and no region can do it alone but two regions united, can do it) or to keep taking our 'pound of flesh' and remain a slave, in a free country, for generations to come?

This is the focus of my rhetorical question.
Dont be drawn into some ethnic bashing theory of which l have no interest please.

I have a feeling that we are at the precipice of a break-through, if we can see it and seize it.
Like my people will say, "Thunder stones are seen once in a thousand years", not an every day occurrence.
If l have Igbo people as best friend for over twenty years, why should l want to take a pound of flesh on Awolowo's behalf (assuming), something they did not partake-in, even if their parents did? Na me be Awolowo?

And good morning to u 2.

By the way, what happened in Haiti is making me think.

I am asking myself 'why is it that some houses are standing while others collapsed like a pack of cards"?

Truth is no matter how much we spend to build a "solid house", its not a waste, if we can afford it.

Where is the bragging? Who is convincing "you" of what he has? Me? Please, abeg no take style insult me!

You mean u have seen ALL my acquisitions from what l wrote?
I doubt it but if you would take the challenge, l ask you to list them here specifically.

Your "tongue-in-the-cheek" comment was all l modestly responded to!

In fact, l only mentioned two things: I bought my first land in 2000 and that l have other properties. What else?

So, you can take your "One day, God will bless you with enough money to buy land" prayer, to those who need it or reserve it for yourself.

So how did you know about what Dangote or Otedola has? I am not them, they are not me.
No hard feelings.

I AM BLESSED AND CONTINUALLY BEING BLESSED.
I say these with a humble and glorifying heart to God almighty.
I will be an ingrate, if l cant confess that God has blessed me!
Like the song goes: Count your blessings one by one, and it will surprise you, what the Lord has done (for me, dont know about you sha grin )
Politics › Re: Jonathan To Be Sworn In As Acting President Immediately - Abuja High Court by lastpage: 4:47am On Jan 16, 2010
I think the judgment actually plays into the hands of Andoookaaa and the "cabal" ruling and looting this country.

As it is, the interpretation in reality, is that for the next 2years, Yara-sick can remain "sick, incommunicado and a ghost" and still be PRESIDENT!

Good(bad)luck will continue to "ACT" but will never be worn-in as President, even if the other schmuck is dead and secretly buried! Grin

Where does that leave us: A country with a "GHOST", for  Head-of-state and C-IN-C!
We deserve an award for lunacy, really Angry Angry

But, we can easily solve this by demanding BOTH men be removed, some way. I don't see why we choose to judge ONLY the president for the state of the nation when his VP was elected on the same ticket as he was.
We need to look at the implication of this judgment!

(1) the Lawyer that filed this case is totally Unknown, a nobody, and not known to be involved in any activism or pro-democracy movement
(2) The same vehicle brought this lawyer and Andooaaaka to the court!
(3) This case was filed and disposed-off within six days, even those of Falana filed before it were not treated first!
(4) If Falana's case was disposed first, its judgement will affect subsequent cases, by law of precedence, just like this one means that Falana's case is just an academic exercise! Thus, the need to treat it first angry
(5) Justice Abutu and Andooaaka are allegedly said to be related on the mother side! (Paternally, one is Kogi, one is Benue)
(6) Andoaaakaa was happy with the judgment and had NO OBJECTION!
(7) Suddenly, all other cases relating to the Presidency were adjourned by this same judge who could find the time to fast-forward the one above!

Knowing the antecedents of Andoaaaka, what is your opinion?

We've just been taken for a ride, one that may last till 2016!
grin
How?

Okay, Judgment says Jonathan can continue to "act as President" but he is not "A President"!

Implication: Jonathan will be "chairing F.E.C meetings" but he can not:

(a) Appoint or Fire any Minister (especially Andooaakak) shocked
(b) Umoru will remain and is still the President, till God knows when
(c) Being Nigeria that we know, Andooaaaka and his "club of thieves" will continue to loot our collective patrimony
(d) Since we have by implication, "outsourced our Presidency" to Saudi Arabia, Umoru can be there till the end of this term (2012)
(e) Under the cover that "he is responding to treatment", Umoru will again contest for Presidency, and as usual with PDP and our demonic Prof Iwuru-wuru, he will win with a landslide grin
(f) So, as Andooaaaka has said, "the President can rule from anywhere"; Umoru will rule till 2016 while he continues to "improve" (dead or alive  grin ) and the looters like Andooaaka, Ibori, e.t.c will continue to be Ministers and the stealing continues!

Well, well, well, hic-hic-hic-hic
Now that is what l call "smart move".

BTW: l am wondering and my Igbo friends will forgive m on this: Why is it that when the country is about to take a giant leap 2 freedom, it is one of us, Igbo guy that would be used as the Judas, to scatter the whole thing?

From this lawyer, Mr. Chris Onwuekwe, Madam Re-"Brandy", to Mr. Kanu (one million match for Abacha) to born-again Senator Chukwumerije (of the Babangida fame), Nzeribe (of Babngida fam), to Ofunagoro, e.t.c. Why do we fall for this temptation? Well, this one is just by the way sha.
