Very good question, there are design guild that one can follow to design ribbed slab.

For a lighter rib one can use polystyrene pod instead of the sancrete block or clay block.

Check out this ribbed design calculations done by my some years ago.
Very good Sir! kiss kiss

This is what l was after.

No "trial & error" ..... everything by the book.

Just hope "Baba-Mulika" will not attempt this sha. grin grin

This is a rib slab with precast rib beam. The hollow block are made to have some minimum strength.

It is very cost effective because you eliminate lots of formwork and concrete section
Thanks to you and Brabus, for shedding light on this practice.

In my own opinion, l believe "Construction" ...is a SCIENCE.
Thus, l know that Engineers just dont decide 'randomly', on how many pipes to put, where to put it, size/thickness of pipes to put, e.t.c.

What is the Equation/Formula or "Scientific guiding principle" in this sort of practice?
Does anyone have a handle on such scientific formula?

I am thinking that we can save a lot of cost, even use less costly foundation and build on not so solid soils, if we can limit the weight of out Slabs, columns and beams..... while not sacrificing structural integrity.

My friend, this is the part of you I DO NOT LIKE.
Y are U so quick to dismiss people if you do not know what a Q plate is why don you ask and let me or Egun explain to you so you can add to you bank of knowledge huh huhor U think Im one of dem lot that speak frm their back side?
1.) I hope this wont degenerate into another 'long story'?

2.) I am NOT dismissing "YOU" as a person. My reference was to the COMMENT you made. The two are different..

3.) Leave Egun out of this, no need to attach him to an issue you want to raise with me..... it may "wrongly", suggests "gangsterism"!

4.) below is your comment, verbatim, ...that l responded to
ok anything out of a Box that drives with 4 wheels that is now called a car is a KIT car, In the UK, your number plate must start with Q, hence I said Q plate
5.) Even if l dont know the meaning of "Q-plate" or have never been to the UK before, grin Google is always our friend, it is free and does not insult anyone for asking! grin
A 'Q' registration number is usually assigned to a vehicle by the DVLA when the vehicle's age or identity is unknown. The vehicle may be rebuilt from parts, some of which may not be new. This also applies to vehicles which are imported WITHOUT supporting evidence to identify the vehicles age.
6.) My response was that not ALL CARS MUST have a Q-plate.
Emphasis on "ALL CARS" & "MUST".
My understanding is that if it is not an "undefined car", it does not have to have a Q-plate.

7.) No where in that definition did it say "ALL CARS IN THE UK have Q-plate"...... which is the impression "l" got from that sentence in your post.

Now, l understand that other people "may" use words or compose their sentences "loosely" ....and in the process, it may connote a different meaning to others reading it.
That is not enough reason to fly-off the handle and l dont come here for "likes" since its not about my person (no one even knows my person so, WTF?) .... its just limited to the comments we make, how we learn from each other and nothing more.

Easy Bro, let's move-on undecided

There's N-Power which opened 2 days ago. http://npower.gov.ng
Stop it Brabus!

N-Power is nothing but a scam...... but we cant discuss it into details here.

Just for reference, focusing on N-teacher.
Let em ask you: What type of "on-the-job-performance" do you expect from a University Graduate who will teach (when he is not even a teacher nor trained in the "Art of Teaching" (yes, its an Art!)) for a specific period of two years, to be paid #23K, without any prospect of full employment at the end of the two years, yet his juniors (NCE, Govt employed Teachers) in the same school, earn more than double that amount.... and are supposed to super-intend over him?
It doe snot even "develop" the person.... while wasting two years of the person's life?

Just like Sure-P and other politically-motivated "take-and let-me-be" ideas, this is another scam!
If Govt can only create just 200 jobs in one year, let it do so and give employment to just 300 folks.
The rest can be TRAINED in a VOCATION that adds "value and skills" to what they already have (Furniture, Roofing, Welding, Carpentry, Shoe-making, e.t.c) while the Govt itself ensures that POWER and Small Capital are for such trained individual to "take-off" on their own.

Infact, it is better if Govt just pays these people the #23K...... and allow them to "do something useful with their precious time", instead of asking them to come and teach, something they have zero interest in, but took it up just to get some dough!

Anyway, let us discuss how to reduce the overall weight of columns by putting pipes and hollow bricks inside! shocked shocked

I cant quote everything you wrote but l read it all. Permit me to take the liberty to annotate some areas in red-ink, as mini-responses to your analogy! The analogy was brilliant though....... and l was a "Library Prefect" too!! kiss

WriteBoy:
I was a prefect in my secondary school days. Prefects were required to maintain a log of some key school infrastructures. He took one look at the log and asked me:

“What happened to this notebook
?” Your Principal "Asked Questions" ..... Buhari will "ask Questions" too!
“Water damage sir”
“have you asked anyone, who caused it?” Your Principal asked for an Investigation.... Buhari will investigate as well!
“Yes I have , and it seems that one of the corpers left an opened sachet of water on the shelf-top”. Your investigation, (as demanded by your Principal), yielded ANSWERS.... Buhari's investigation is yielding ANSWERS as well

“Well you are in charge of this particular notebook, so go and get a fresh notebook; copy this one out, and then you must it bring back to me.
Your Principal punished someone for the crime.... Criminals should also get punished for the crime of looting the treasury

this notebook is your responsibility, no matter who may have caused its present misery, it is you who are to make sure everything is all right” as an afterthought,
he added; “ I must have it before closing tomorrow” Your Principal gave you a "reasonable length of time to correct the problem caused by others..... Same way we must give Buhari a "reasonable amount of time" to correct the problems caused by Jonathan and his forty thieves.
“All right sir” I responded and quietly walked out of the office.

I fumed to the high heavens and cursed and whined; I was pissed at having to fix what some other person had through their negligence and irresponsibility spoilt. But still, I had no choice. I pulled an all-nighter and performed what was required of me.

Responsibility!

I love your analogy!

A few things stuck out like sore thumbs though:

1.) Responsibility: You told your Principal 'who' caused the problem, right?
Why did you not just keep quiet and "assume responsibility" for what you did not do........... as you people are asking of this Govt?
Those who dont know and cant analyse where they are coming from, cannot decipher where they are going and would probably end-up going round in circles"

2.) Your Principal gave you about two days to get a new Note and copy the contents back... and you said "Alright Sir".
Now, l am wondering what you would have said, if your Principal said "I am giving you one hour to get me another book with contents copied back"?
I bet you wont be the "silently fuming" Prefect, even if you are an 'S.U'.......... because he is asking you to do the "Impossibility".

This is what #Wailers are asking Buhari to do. Repair an economy that was critically damaged over a six year period when resources are awash (though commensurately looted!)... within ONE YEAR, when resources are almost non-existent?

3.) Agreed, People are suffering, food is costly, forex is down, e.t.c.

But let me use another analogy to explain whats going on:
Let' say a Child has an infected, ulcerated wound on his leg and it is causing him so much pain.
A "qualified" Nurse will not just apply bandage over the wound and say go home, it will heal by itself!
shocked
I said "qualified Nurse' because l know a few "next-door-Chemist" /Quacks who will do what as above! grin

*The Nurse would FIRST ask you "What was the cause of this injury (Snake bite? Dog bite? Nail puncture?) so as to ascertain how to proceed (This is the "Corruption investigation" end of the treatment)

*The Nurse remove all the dead tissues on and inside the wound (Very painful procedure!)

*The Nurse now cleans the wound with Iodine tincture (Now that thing pains person pass raw pepper! )

*The Nurse would then inject the surroundings of wounded area with Antibiotics. Probably another to the buttocks as well! (Again, no one likes the pain of injection...certainly not me! grin )

It is after the above Four steps have been taking, despite the fact that the sick person is riddled with "even more pain"... that we can expect the wound to heal safely! In other words, we have caused more pain, in other to heal a bigger pain (Amputation!)

We all know it takes less time to 'destroy'... than to 'build'.

As it is now, Nigerians are going through the "painful process" of treating the "infected, leg Ulcer" that Jonathan and his gang of "40 Robbers and Yam Eaters" left for us in 2015.

We knew a 'little bit' of what was going on back then, before the election ......and that is why we kicked him out and said "Never Again" to anything that smells like Jonathan........ but we never knew "the wound" was this bad and smelly, ...that they were just sharing our wealth at will and depleting our National Forex Reserve like there will be no-tomorrow!

They never did anything for the future (No building of refineries, No building of Power stations, Road were all bad, Hospitals became Morgues, e.t.c.
But we are now faced with the reality of a Nigeria that is like an odious, ulcerated leg: We either face "Amputation" if we maintain the status-qo (by retaining Jonathan and his looters) ...... or we allow the Nurse (Buhari and his team) to perform surgical Nursing on the wound...for a better tomorrow.
It is painful, would be painful and we all feel the pain but unlike #Wailers, some of us know that "after the rain comes sunshine"
.... this is a pain we MUST go through, if we are to emerge stronger and better.

Those who are "morally and mentally bankrupt" are WAILING ...leave the leg alone, dont clean it, the pain is too much, bla-bla-bla!
They are saying to the Nurse "Dont ask me any foolish question, just bandage my wound and l should be okay"! shocked
Such people just die untimely and suddenly!
If it took six years to destroy a nation, it will take more than that to fix it, it will be gradual and painful
....(We do hope the Govt puts a "human face" to it and not be like that 'No-nonsense Nurse' who pulls stuck bandage out of a wound without 'wetting it' first!).... but it will lead to healing eventually. It will lead to a better country.

As for those who brought us to this point, we owe it a duty to posterity to punish them severely (and the next Govt must also do same by punishing the "left-overs"wink since no sane person should expect this Govt to have the CAPACITY to punish all looters since independence, for a "fantastically corrupt" country (#David Cameron)
When Trees fall on Each other, it is the TOP-MOST ONE, that we start removing FIRST!
- Yoruba Proverb!

This Govt will start the corruption fight, on those who looted our Yams, in the immediate past dispensation of Jonathan.
Tribalist, SaTANoids, #Wailers, IPADS, e.t.c ....can take a dive where sharks live! tongue tongue

No long story but this is how CORRUPTION works:

- You loot enough money while in office
- You use a small chunk of the loot to hire people of 'no-conscience' for Propaganda war! (Read: SaTANoids, #Wailers, Tribalist, e.t.c)
- These SaTANoids go about publishing fake, concocted and manipulated stories that eulogise you, all over the public space
- Using some of these TANoids as agents, they contact jobless Nigerians and their equally fake accomplices in foreign lands, offer to give them money to "organise a Lecture" for their principal to come and speak on anything but corruption!
- The Looter goes on microphone, just as Jonathan has been doing all over the place, first thanking the "whole world" who begged him to just come and speak for 5mins (claiming they will faint if he doesn't deliver the lecture! grin )
- Then the Yam Eater goes about "telling them what they want to hear" and eulogising himself!

ITS A SCAM! At the end of the day, everyone is HAPPY.
Looter gets a platform to praise-sing himself ..... and the boys like you get some money to solve your immediate problems.

I hope we all still remember how Mama Piss was shouting "Digital! Digital!! Dii-giiii-taaal!!!" grin all over the place when Jonathan released money, a day after the election was postponed..... ostensibly for "Digitalization of the Radio/TV stations, including Channels TV? When in actual fact the money was to "buy Propaganda" from them since Nigeria has funded the Digitalization of its National Media over and over again! ...
....and how is it Federal Govt business", to be funding the Digitalization of PRIVATE Media/TV stations like Channels TV?

Ofcourse, we all know now that it is just "filthy propaganda lucre" of the Jonathan "come-and-chop" syndrome.

The Guardian led by its owner Mr. Obiaghena recently refunded their share of the "Digital YAMS" Mama Piss was referring to, in that mad outburst! ditto AIT and many more like that
grin

Look, l know Nairaland is not a platform to have intelligent and deep-seated discussions because most of the posters are juvenile, 'awaiting result ranters' who bask in ignorance, whose brain are beclouded with tribalism and who are plain silly.... but then, we owe it a duty to 'chip-in', once in awhile because "A lie told so-often, may assume an air of truth"

Trentonline just reported a similar story but claimed buhari sacked up to 200 mid and senior military officers because they were from the SE and SS and because they supported GEJ during 2015 elections. Who do we believe?
Instead of this rumours and innuendos, why dont they just publish the names of the retired personnel, ....and let the public make their own judgement?

Below is the rubbish that the useless online Trent published, without any supporting FACTS!

There are indications on Friday, June 11, 2016 that about 200 military officers may have been sacked by the federal government through text messages (SMS) over their alleged loyalty to former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 general elections.

They affected officers were said to have been carefully selected for backing Jonathan during the last 2015 general election.

Further checks in the military establishment in Abuja, also hinted that military officers who were believed to be loyal to the former national security adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki were also affected in the mass sacking.

The list showed that they were mainly from the South East, South South and a small percentage of them were from the North Central region of the country.

The development which is already causing some ripples in the military, according to political analysts, could cost the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration public goodwill.

A source said, “It is being seen as an act of ethnic card to checkmate those officers who were seen as posing danger to the Federal Government and it was resolved in the Presidency that they should be weeded out.”

But the concern as some observers also said was the implication of the sack on the psyche of the military institution and the public which was felt capable of truncating the nation’s democracy as the “systematic sacking “ of over 200 top military officers mainly from the southern part of the country was a decision difficult to defend by the federal government.

“The affected officers were sent text messages relieving them of their jobs and they were directed to pick their sack letters at specific locations without any reason given for terminating their appointments,” said a source in the Presidency which pleaded anonymity.

According to the source, the move allegedly masterminded by “some hawks“ in the presidency was aimed at weeding out all officers who were perceived to be loyal to the last regime and deemed to have played one role or the other favourable to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in the last presidential election.

“The game plan is to remove all vestiges of the old regime, particularly those officers considered to be too intelligent and smart to challenge the status quo.

“Buhari is weary of being toppled a second time, given his ugly past experience. But unknown to him, this latest move of indiscriminate sacking of senior and middle level officers has divided the military and created rumblings in some quarters”, the source stated.

When you check the names of all the person whose houses were seized, you understand the reason why NDA are very angry with the Zoo..
You people just like to play the "VICTIM Card"!

I never knew that names like Umar, Adigun, Alex badeh, Adesola Amosu .....are also related to IPAD, right?
grin grin

A block of luxury flats on Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, worth N1.8bn, was also seized from Adigun as well as a parcel of land located on Bourdillon Drive, Ikoyi, worth N908m.

-A set of four terrace houses on Agede Street, off Aminu Kano in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja was also seized from Adigun. The worth of the property was not stated.

-A house located on Adeyemo Alakija Street, GRA Ikeja, near the Ghanaian High Commission, belonging to the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (retd.), has also been sealed. It is worth over N200m.

-A set of houses belonging to Amosu in the Badagry area of Lagos State was also seized.
An ultra-modern hospital, St. Solomon Health Care Limited, located on Adeniyi Jones Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos, was also seized from Amosu. It is said to be worth N85m
But then, statistical facts show that most of the "Yam Eaters" come from that "Red Soil Erosion" area of Nigeria! grin grin

those houses are not designed to be offices and maintenance will become an issue eventually.

If you want a cease fire, initiate processes that will ensure smooth transition into fiscal federalism.

We want to control the Oil in the region, Clean UP is just our Right that has been denied us for decades, stop making it sound like a favour.
To be honest with you, that will never happen!
Yes, there can be war, there can be sabotage, e.t.c..... but that is the best that can happen.

No region can just wake-up one day and decide it wants to arrogate what was hitherto, a "National property" ... ..to itself.
The other regions would rather ensure NO ONE gets anything from it (Total Destruction, with a lot of Collateral Damage), that allow that to happen.
And you cant win because "states/Nations" are designed for prolonged war ....while Militias are not!
We need/have to be pragmatic and realistic with ourselves
.

A better demand would have been "Verifiable Developments" (not the NDDC and Amnesty Sham that your leaders used to defraud you) in the region.
*Good Roads
*Equitable ownership of Oil-wells (as against some "Mallams from Nowhere" owning 80% of Oil Block sin the N/Delta)
*Portable pipe-borne Water
*Employment Opportunities
*Education
*Clean-Up of the environment

The above are what l think any reasonable person or Govt can relate with. I am sure even other regions will support you over these.
But to be destroying infrastructures build with tax -payers money, plunging people into darkness, reducing nations income and other "economic sabotages" is not going to win you friends and believe me, "friends are very important" when it comes to this kind of fight. undecided

The Niger delta have been the one suffering the land, air and water pollution for decades, increasing the mortality rate and suffering the indegenes.

If we can't have a sane clime in the Niger delta, then the rest of Nigeria can as well suffer similar fate. By the time oil production hits zero.

The whole country will know the feeling and suffering we have been witnessing for decades in the Niger delta. What is good for the goose is good for the ganfer. At least its just oil installations are being bombed.
But this Govt has just started the CLEAN-UP process of the Niger Delta ... and it was in the NEWS as well.

So, how does polluting the same environment (when you bomb a pipeline, the Oil spils out over the land) Billions of Naira is being expended to CLEAN UP, contribute to a POLLUTION-FREE Niger Delta?

A time will come, even if there is no income from oil, .... (Agriculture and other mineral Resources will still provide a sizeable income to this Govt at any time, any day!) ....that the Niger Delta Area wont be able to grow a single corn of Maize,... and the Govt will decide it will blockade the place completely from imports of food from other regions, that is when Hunger will spell doom for the people of the Niger Delta!

Let me tell you a secret: Back in 'the days', Unilag student use to protest (justifiably too) of Govt neglect, poor funding and all sorts of problems, by DESTROYING AND BURNING DOWN THE SCHOOL PROPERTIES! We call it Aluta-Continua in those days! v grin

Then in 1986, we decided that we were just punishing ourselves in the long-run, if we continue to destroy our own institution's property when the people in Govt are in no-way affected by such destruction! They just pretended as if nothing happened! angry angry

We had a meeting and decided that from now on, we are going to change tactics and the slogan became "Aluta-with-Sense"! grin grin
This means no more destruction of ANYTHING within the walls of the school
! undecided
If we need to protest, we just barricaded our gates and moved into town and show Govt some "pepper"!
Then, they took us serious.

Destroying your land, your infrastructure and what belongs to you, to make point, is the height of senselessness!
Grow-Up and do "Aluta-with-Sense".
