We actually need the ventilators.... It depends on how you interpret it . To me what he meant is just that the country really needs it , not like they have sold the country or anything . In my opinion
So, you think Trump will be sending 200 ventilators to Nigeria out of the goodness of his heart?

Plus, I think the emphasis is misplaced. Ventilators are great, but they are a very minute portion of this fight. When a patient gets to the point of needed to be intubated, it is almost too late as about 95% of intubated patients die eventually.

He should have been discussing treatment drug protocol and vaccines with Trump and how Trump can help Nigeria in those fronts.

I know that, there are some single ladies here who are capable of persuading him to stop and you will start seeing results within days. In fact some married ladies here are patiently waiting for the opportunity to trade-up and this might just be it.

If you are serious about us helping to persuade him, please drop him contacts and you wouldn’t be disappointed in your quest.

How many people observed that in the 2020 budget, out of the projected N10 trillion for expenses, approximately 25% of that (~N2.5 trillion) was earmarked for debt servicing? Please note that due to the fall in oil prices, the budget has been reviewed lower but the debt servicing component will either remain constant or even go higher due to exchange rate dynamics.

Unfortunately, the country is now vigorously borrowing more money while the revenue base is shrinking. If oil prices do not improve significantly over the coming months, do not be surprised to see debt servicing accounting for 30 - 40% of FG 2021 budget.

My fears is that, hope our leaders despite their greeds and selfishness have the common sense not to turn Nigeria into another Zambia.

Zambia were on borrowing spree and now China owns part of Zambia as a result of them not able to service some of their debts and therefore defaulting.

I understand ur point, but Malaria is by far a deadlier disease. A strong immune system is the reason why alot of us don't die of malaria and not necessarily the drugs. No matter how healthy u are anytime u do a malaria test 99% of the time it comes out positive. Malaria only breaks ppl down when the count becomes too much and overwhemls the immune system hence the need to take malaria drugs. My opinion is, if ur body can fight off the infection the first time, it shouldn't be a problem the second time except ur imune has been compromised. Covid19 is only scary cos of it's infectious rate and not because of how deadly it is. Imagine the whole world shutting down because of a diseas with less than 2% death rate and 90% recover without visiting an hospital. There is something WHO is not telling us and there is a grand scheme in play. Covid19 is just a means to get there.
The reality of those 2% death rate is this....

With current Nigeria population of about 200 mil, birth rate of 37 per 1000 and world population of about 7.6 bil.

4 mil Nigerian will die immediately and nothing less that 150,000 each year will be added to mortality rate.

About 152 mil will die world wide immediately and additional million each year.

Agreed, the yearly figures will reduce with the advancement of medicine and vaccines...but the immediate death toll is enough to take drastic action now to flattened the curve.

GamalNasser:
So how is the Vaccine expected to work when a full infection can't create enough antibodies to stall reinfection so hows a docile vaccine strain of infection expected to guarantee that ?
I think when scientists speak publicly, they are overly cautious with words.

The phrase ‘no evidence’ means a lot. It could mean WHO is still testing...has not start testing...etc. I would have been more worried if WHO said....”there is evidence that you don’t get immunity from an infection’. Which will be totally different from what they stated above.

Agreed, natural immunity are more potent than those acquired through vaccines, but remember that the body got it from doing a ‘life n death’ battle against a live virus and though the body won, but it was truly beaten up in a number of ways and places by the virus.

The body now have the cure by way of immunity, but it is still weak, it needs to replenish lost nutrients. Facing the same opponent within a very short period of time as we are seeing with those who retested positive might not be the best or real world situation with other kind of viruses.

All the cases with reinfections that I have read about, did not show symptoms and they recovered, it means the immunity worked. Agreed it didn’t give the virus a technical knockout at first sight of second reappearance, maybe because it was still weak and was not expecting a rematch this soon, but it did it’s job and retained it’s belt.

Forget ventilators, those things kill. Don't join the bandwagon. Spend the money on PPE and anti body tests. Plan to reopen your economy.
Ventilators don’t kill and they are not a cure either....they are there just to prolong your life a bit further, this way hopefully your body immunity wins the fight.

The reason most people who go on ventilators died is because, it is usually the last resort, when your body have failed to respond to treatment and things have progressed to the point, where you can’t breath on your own....the question at that point is either to watch you die within the next few minutes or intubate you.

Am curious about your limited suggestions for just PPE & anti-body test. It appear you believe herd immunity is the answer to this pandemic. Though there is value in herd immunity, but millions are going to died.

I think the economy can still be open with companies implementing strict social distancing rules, face coverings & temperature checks at company entrance.

Government cannot be plaintiff and judge in it's own matter.
The same reliefs that are available to ANY OTHER EMPLOYER in such a situation are what should be available to government if we operate rule of law.

You say
you can’t be a full time employee in more than one company, neither should lecturers

Is that a moral or legal issue. What does the employment contract say.?

If Lecturers are in breach of contract then follow the law just like ANY OTHER EMPLOYER

This is a clear case of Guilty until proven innocent. To make allegations about double jobs and all of that is interesting but

The key issues are

What does the employment contract say
Where is the evidence of this
Is unilateral action the solution

If any individual Lecturer breaches his contract or breaks the law does that mean collective punishment is the solution ?
Gather the evidence and prosecute or sanction him appropriately.

All I can see is an assumption that this is happening without a shred of evidence that is the case or even that it breaches their contract

Surely the government has all the resources to provide evidence of just ONE CASE?
You made a valid point, let’s take the simple scenario of employer vs employee that you have laid out here.

If e.g. your current employer (assuming you are in the private sector aka not employer by the Government), ask you to present your BVN as a condition to obtaining your salary, are you saying your employer doesn’t have the right to do that and must obtain the leave of a court?

That is not true, even if you run to a court, it will be hard to find any court that will side with you. BVN is a valid law in this country, it was done to check fraud among other things and it is not a burdensome requirement for you to produce one, since by the operation of the law, you already got one....Plus, you may not even have standing to bring the suit, because you can’t provide any damage that will you will legally suffer by producing one.

my reasons are;
1. is it that before now these lecturers receive their stipends by hand?
2. is FG saying that these lectures teaching in other schools use different names and Ids?
The FG is doing the right thing here, you can’t be a full time employee in more than one company, neither should lecturers.

You will agree that, there is corruption in Nigeria and to fight it, the way things use to be done have to change.

If the demand is trivial and Lecturers have been open about their work with multiple institutions, why the push back on producing their BVN?

However, you can’t compare Nigeria with US that keeps records. People die everyday in Nigeria from all sort of illness and autopsy are not mandatory as in the US.

If asked now that, how many people die in Nigeria in the year 2019? No body know the answer, if anyone tell you that, they know....then they are lying.....So, if we don’t know how many died, it is impossible to know how many died from malaria or flu or even covid-19.

HealthRe: Wearing Face-Masks Will Be Compulsory In Lagos - Sanwo-Olu by linearity: 7:22pm On Apr 20, 2020
Seun:
I remember predicting that the reign of the Coronavirus would come to an end when people started wearing face masks. It is gradually coming to pass. The reason the entire world is in this mess is that the Asians, who produce most face-masks and other personal protection equipment, blocked their manufacturers from exporting them to the rest of the world because they knew that they would be needed to protect their people.

Instead of the West to respond by mobilizing their manufacturers to produce face-masks massively, so that they would be able to protect their people, they started a deceptive campaign to discourage people from using them. The campaign was so effective that people who wore face-masks were mocked and shamed by those who had been brainwashed. People who had face-masks were pressured into giving them away.

Now they grudgingly accept that face-masks are helpful but instead of producing adequate quantities of the quality face-masks that have been proven to be effective - the kind of masks that most Asians are wearing - they are asking people to use less effective home-made masks.
Home face masks can be made effective, just put enough layers of tissue paper inside the mask, ignite a flash and try to blow through the face mask with the flame in front of your face, if the flame does not move, then you are good.

Though remember to wash then frequently and spray sanitizers in front in-between use.

Agreed, it could be looked at as been deceptive, but the main purpose for delaying telling the general public not to use face mask is strategic, this way health workers & hospitals on the frontline who are more exposed can stock up on them, before the buying hysteria by the public.

The primary concern of the poster that I responded to, was why the tally of confirmed cases are not reducing, given the fact that there are some discharged cases... it was a pure mathematical question, that of number tallying and not some English Language semantics dealing with the past vs present or ‘had’ vs ‘have’.

You skipped English classes .
There is nothing like "you have recovered and has been discharged" what you should type is "you have recovered and have been discharged".
There is nothing like "China is still reporting about 82k confirmed cases, despite the fact that about 77k of those have recovered and discharged"
what you should type is "China is still reporting about 82k confirmed cases, despite the fact that about 77k of those confirmed cases have recovered and have been discharged"
On the issue of the term "confirmed"
E.g It is confirmed that there are five million aircrafts in America.
Q.If one million of those aicrafts get bad and is disposed of,
how many confirmed aircrafts would remain when aircrafts are to be recounted?
Below is a solved example.
If one million aircrafts are sold from the five million confirmed aircrafts by jan.31st 2020,you can not report on 1st Feb.2020 that there are still five million confirmed aircrafts.
Please take note of the below statement.
There is a difference between "WE HAVE" 400 CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19 and "We Had" 400 Confirmed Cases Of Covid-19.
Hahaha...my English teacher are you on Nairaland too? no vess...I never knew we were in a formal English class here.

This is an informal forum and you are here correcting English Language usage?...but you are using a singular verb for a plural noun and can’t even spell all instances of aircraft correctly?....Doctor heal thyself first...” If one million of those aicrafts get bad and is disposed of...”

If this debate is about English, I give up bros...you win, but if you are still arguing about how Nigeria and the rest of the world are getting it wrong by not removing the number of discharged cases from confirmed cases, you and a few confused others you referenced are alone on this and can argue among yourselves.

I will take the expects’ methodology over your internet and English expertise any day, any time.... unless you have some credentials to show, that supersedes that of those who have established and are using this methodology.

The ‘confirmed’ cases have to do with people that have been tested and confirmed to be positive. It have nothing to do with those currently confirmed to be (or actively) positive, which your false equivalency aircraft analogy is trying to portray. This is the same methodology every single country on earth is using.

The total number of confirmed cases must reduce as long as people have been discharged in that state.
E.g we have two confirmed cases in Enugu state then 3 days later those two confirmed cases are discharged.
The number of confirmed cases in Enugu is zero because there is no more case of the virus in that state.
It is wrong publication to display that there are two CONFIRMED cases in Enugu state when the two ACTIVE OR CONFIRMED cases have been DISCHARGED.
E.g If there is only one active case in State A or B and that active case dies or is discharged then there is no more ACTIVE or CONFIRMED case in state A or B.
When displaying the confirmed cases it should reflect also because there is no more confirmed person in state A or B with the virus.
Bros, you are still confusing the stuff....

Remember it is ‘confirmed’ in that, it is in the past; what you are referring to is ‘active cases’. The fact that, you have recovered and has been discharged does not mean that, you were not confirmed positive in the past...so, that tally cannot go down, it can only increase.

There is nothing wrong in the way it is been reported in Nigeria, except that they are not including the active cases. Also, the way Nigeria is reporting it, is the way every other country worldwide is doing....e.g. as at today, China is still reporting about 82k confirmed cases, despite the fact that about 77k of those have recovered and discharged and they only have about 1k active cases, with about 4k deaths.

This is one of the links that tracks the report globally, you can even see Nigeria’s numbers there...

Why is the numbers not reduced in those states ?
Or did another five persons contract the coronavirus in Edo state ,or did another Two persons contract the virus in Enugu State or who completed the Rivers State coronavirus patients to be two again.
Nigeria and record keeping ! Very poor.
Even NCDC can't adjust the list promptly.
Those states were the number reduced from 15 to 10 or from 2 to 0 should be adjusted properly.
Imagine someone just looking at that list for the first time he or she will think that Edo state still has 15 covid 19 patient and Enugu state still has 2 patients or that the Rivers State figure has not reduced.
I know some people at the top are benefitting from not updating the list correctly.
.

You are conflicting Total Active Cases with Total Confirmed cases.

Total confirmed cases will never decrease, it is an ever increasing number and will document the total number of people that got infected regardless if the passed or recover.

What you are referring to, is Total Active cases which will account for total deaths plus total discharged....Total Active cases will fluctuate up and down each day and the best scenario is for it to eventually reduce to zero.
