AN OPEN LETTER TO THE NIGER DELTA AVENGERS (NDA) & MR. PRESIDENT, FRN.

I respectfully write this letter on behalf of concerned Nigerians. We are the stoical sufferers of this restiveness today. If the attacks continue, the spring-back effect will destabilize our fathers, mothers, children and the society at large, our enviable South-south, our Delta, our core values and wealth.

Yes our region has suffered enough neglect and exploitation. We all have stood valiant in the arena, marred by extreme poverty and hunger; near-zilch infrastructural development; bad roads;
schools; basic amenities; unemployment and Environmental degradation. The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) demands greater share of oil revenue, amnesty payments, clean-up and compensation for spills, an independent Niger Delta State (Fiscal Federalism). The NDA also demands the release of PRO-Biafran leader, Nnamdi Kanu et al. With a rational mind, the NDA demands are not prohibited by any law but the method used in handling these demands call for concern. Dialogue is a major prerequisite to the fight for Niger Delta. Nigeria has been courting danger for over 30 years now. Like nations we have had our civil war and thank God we survived it. Our citizens have reconciled, yet a danger pocket looms and threatens the very existence of our country. The spate of these bombings and explosion of oil installation are not only affecting the nation economically but degrading our own soil of the region. Our environment is also been destroyed. Please let us channel our grievances to the appropriate authorities rather than destroy our country’s commonwealth.

The US pumps over 8 million barrels of oil per day and provides 9.6 million jobs for Americans. By proportion, since Nigeria pumps 2.8 million barrels per day, our Oil and Gas sector should provide Nigerians with at least 2 million jobs. Truly, we are living in poverty in Niger Delta. We can’t even farm, no enabling environment. Every creek; river; farmland polluted with oil spills. The Multinationals – Chevron, Agip, Shell, Mobil etc have ignored our plight for so long. Successive Nigerian Government has been so impotent to protect the interest of the people whose land is responsible for 70% of Government revenue. However, there can never be a solution to the Niger Delta problem unless we make the people come together as one. Eschew political and religious differences; clean up every inch of our lands and every drop of oil that has spilled for the last 50 years. This will provide immediate employment for disaffected youths that are currently taking up arms, kidnapping and robbery. We commend the FG for the cleanup of Ogoni land - at least this can be regarded as a starting point. This cleanup has to spread throughout the Niger Delta. We know it will cost money but it has to be done. We need infrastructures that can create immediate employment for all citizens and the restless youths in Niger Delta.

I want to use this medium to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to do the right thing and stand up for the Niger Deltans. Eight Months into your emergence as the president, the whole region was peaceful until snippets of negligence started popping up. There was seemingly political witch-hunting of people in this region. Your excellency, for now this isn’t what you need to build the country. Bring everybody together. Where necessary give political appointments to the opposition party, as long as it will give the country headway. Your excellency should also look at an appeal by ACNDP. If possible employ Goodluck Jonathan as a Special envoy to Niger Delta. This appointment will help reduce the present hostility by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA). Call these Militant Generals for a Dialogue that will cut across their demands and your wants. Deploying one Million Soldiers to Niger Delta can never be a panacea to this problem rather it will exacerbate the whole crises. NDA are Nigerian citizens and they also have a heart. They also see the sufferings we all are passing through today. Please let us strip away pride and give fairness a chance for the betterment of Nigeria.

Dear Brothers of the Niger Delta let us embrace peace. One Niger Delta, One Nigeria. One Africa. Thanks for reading!!!
