zimoni: I'm so so so GLAD.
This is a GOOD NEWS.
I was afraid Ajimobi was going to compromise due to his closeness to PMB.
Now we are waiting to hear from Aregbesola and Amosun. Ajimobi and Mimiko have spoken, remaining Aregbesola and Amosun. The grazing nansense will never work in Ekiti and Lagos, I'm quite sure. No land for them in Lagos, Ekiti-Ketes are the most stubborn Yoruba's, no marauders can't take their land for grazing whatever.
The Bill must be killed and rejected.
Say NO to Fouta Jalons.
Alaabaa. of course that nonsense cannot even work in Ekiti. the land in Ekiti has owners and no way an Ekiti man that doesn't sell land to a foreigner to build on or farm will allow his land go to Fulani herdsmen the Fulanis need to go back to fouta jalon if they need land so much |

9jacrip: Egbon mi, sleep don come but let me attempt a reply, I hope I am able to make sense with whatever I scribble.
Ifa contains spiritual tales (for spiritual purposes), Myth (for story purposes) & actual history with existing evidences recorded for history purposes. Everything woven together makes Ifa sturdy for divination yet fluid as an encyclopedia for general knowledge.
Although, I do not know who owns a deity's name first - the spiritual figure, the mythical figure or human figure? I am yet to unravel this part and this will go a long way in understanding a lot of things.
First Obatala in Ifa was a man, Oduduwa's brother that was robbed. Who was suppose to create the world; he who created people but messed both up from alcohol intoxication.
Along the line, in order to explain how the word is a calabash, Obatala became the woman - wife and Oduduwa became the man - husband. Oduduwa the first half of the calabash then Obatala the second half. Which makes it the second Obatala in Ifa.
The third Obatala was the man, Oseremagbo. Obamakin's big brother. The owner of Ade Are, the king of Iranje-Ideta Ile & Oko, Yeemo's husband, father of Ilesun & Ilale etc
I don't know who bore the name first but as with other figures like Orunmila, Esu, Osun, Oduduwa to mention a few - there are spiritual, mythical and human parts to their stories.
Baba's oriki that you cited was just a line from a long verse. From the same verse it also said 'Okunrin a sa'ra m'eegun' which goes to show Obatala was a 'he' in the human form.
One interesting thing to note is, prior to the Obatala human - Yeemo's husband, there was no Obatala worship anywhere recorded. It began after the passing of the Obatala of 15 centuries ago (like you said). The same is the case with all other deities.
Eruwadaaji. very important information here. I've noticed many people don't realize that when the name of a deity is mentioned it could be on history, myth or spirituality. that's why when we talk about historical Oduduwa, people still bring up the tale of coming from the sky on a chain or that Oduduwa is a woman. and this applies to all deities |

ghostofsparta: Do you mean Oramfe is Ile-Ife or Oramfe is in Ile-Ife ? Jakuta as I understand from my past research would be classified as a 'TITAN' with divinistic attributes, who hauled boulders hence 'ja kuta' (one who fights by hauling huge boulders) has it ever crossed your mind that there must have existed enormous entities similar to the Greek 'titans' from your Ifa researches but our ancient Ifa folks has no way of translating to us in that way. I have data that points to the existence of giants or titans in ancient Yorubalands lending credence to outer-space earth-visitors theorists and writers such as Eric Von Daniken. I am beginning to agree with my hypothesis that Irunmoles are Titans and Orishas are Gods because I have researching for a long time the difference between the two. Oramfe is in Ile-Ife. . one of the most important deities in Ife and Ilaje the Greeks never saw the Titans as different from the Olympians as you do. the titans were forebears of the Olympians as the Titans were preceeded by the Primordials or Protogenos like Ananke, Chronos, Tartarus, Gaia etc you must bear in mind that the Greeks had different eras with different ideas. .. hence their View on Gods carried different versions |

9jacrip: My big brothers, I enjoy reading your posts and tapping from knowledge you drop on the pages of nairaland - May Olodumare continue to keep you for me and many others who learn from you both.
My own thoughts are that, Yoruba civilization reveres and ascrbes a deity to any (super) natural phenomenon.
Thus, we have the irunmole and the actual human figure for each phenomenon mostly intertwined which makes it difficult for the 'ogberi' to distonguish what from what.
As for lightening and thunder.
In Ife, it is Oramfe but then there's actual Oramfe figure and history surrounding him. Oramfe, apart from being the deity of lightening and thunder in Ife goes further as the deity of night and day (time) and rain. (His brother also controls rain, can't recall his name right now).
Sango, what was Sango's actual name? Sango the human was not known to control thunder & lightening. He, apart from having popular wives - Osun, Oya, Oba & Ganbiolu, was known for his tempranent and emiting smoke/fire from the mouth and also using stones to fight - stones that cause an explosion of fire upon hiting target - hence, 'Jakuta'. From the Sango human's life style, he was all about smoke, fire & stone not thunder & lightening.
We can say the mattee of lightening & thunder was incorporated into his followership much later and it was copied off of Oramfe.
Obatala is not the name of the isese sect. The worship and followership of Obatala was/is a family thing and we called ourselves Omo Olorisa or Ile Olorisa. There was Obatala the irunmole who created things and was next to Olodumare then there was Obatala the human who existed and didn't start a cult other than Ogboni which one of his sons founded. He was a king and had friends/followership from other kings - Oluorogbo, OrisaIkire, Ijugbe etc who were remained independent but saw him as a senior and most powerful - the Oduduwa war brought a sharp division that made everyone take different sides of the divide. Despite the sign up for his team, an 'Obatala cult' did not arise from it.
What we have is just a family compound upholding Obatala's temple and artefacts, propiatiating him as he requested all revolving around certain guidelines, rules and regulation. I do not see this as a cult
Just my 2 cents even though no one asked me for donations. nice input egbon. obarese is the name of Oramfe's brother. and I think Ijugbe is the place in ife where he is worshiped |

I have stated repeatedly that Sango the once Alaafin of Oyo who attained prominence for acquiring Sango-like attributes is different from the actual Sango the Irunmole who is at a level below the prime Irunmoles in the Yoruba pantheon. One was born a human who wield Sango powers while the other is a deity supernaturally unique like each one of the 401 Irunmoles, all of whom manifest-existed in dual form.
90% of folks and scholars of Yoruba cosmogony unknowingly and mistakenly tend to blend the two together and has thus given critics the opportunity to disregard Sango as no more a human deified into a God. before the Alaafin, nobody called on the name "Sango". It was Jakuta and the Jakuta cult was reformed by Sango it's only in places that were under Oyo influence that have Sango. .. In Ife and eastern yoruba areas like Ilaje, it is Oramfe. The center of Sango veneration is Koso, where Sango followers founded... Oramfe is Ile-Ife Sango is an orisa not Irunmole.. similar case with Obatala who was the leader of the Cult that came to be known with the Name "Obatala" |

You can google it, words like suegbe-fool, ika-wicked, lareja-knowledge, ibudo-dwelling place, On-person, ma-know and over half of modern Yoruba vocab was used in exactly thesame way in kemitic Egypt. So that our current language is descended from that language is not debateable. it is the fact. i for one believe our ancestors spoke Akoko dialects in the past. I once heard an Awo on radio saying our old word for house was Arigidi and that Ile is new. That we speak a language descended from kemitic Egypt does not mean we are descended wholly from kemitic Egypt but definitely a large number of them joined us and we adopted the language same way we are now adopting English. this is what I call gullibility. how can you believe every dumb shiit you read online? who gave the authors of those online articles the knowledge of the Egyptian language? all those things are lies Mr. man |
Culture › Re: Etymology Of Yoruba Greetings by macof(m): 12:57pm On Apr 26, 2016 |
absoluteSuccess: I've wondered why grandma says ehu after greetings most of the time. Yeah she's Fon.
Then I suspected that 'ehu' is 'e Ku'. I don't know how Yoruba words crept into Egun language, because ehu means 'you death'.
Most times the Yoruba words in Egun are already "Egunized", as you have it in the saying "apakrioko" which is Yoruba word.
So I asked mum who was my informant and a very Yoruba as she is Egun. She couldn't break the code either.
But I think, it is Yoruba and it means 'a pa kiri oko' wandering fighters. I think the code mixing is on purpose.
The ancient fathers uses secondary languages to say unpleasant stuffs that are important to be said.
I observed this in how Yoruba often says "Ayanma", is this a corruption of "oyinoma"?
We can relate with this irony, using someone else's (language) good word to say good word to imply the worst in your own language.
For instance, 'e fon dagbe' is a Yoruba slang meaning, 'good as gone' but it is an Egun phrase meaning 'hope you wake up fine?'
The Yoruba are great with words. But often their ideas are paradoxical. There are delicate words beyond our scopes at our disposal.
The best example of complex use of ideas is to be appreciated in Yoruba euphemism.
Most of today's Yoruba unpleasant words are euphemism originally, mo fe ya gbe, I want to branch off to the bush.
This ironically is Yoruba euphemism for using the conveniences. But we now take it to mean (saying) the uncouth word.
But the very Yoruba for the very act, the culprit we are running from is "mo fe se igbonse" that is, "I want to do reflex-and-discharge".
Actually, Igbe is bush, while igbonse is poo. In a way, we sensors the euphemism and protect the vulgar word we intend to sensor.
We sensor 'I want to use the conveniences' and we protected 'I want to defecate'.
I hope someone can relate with the idea I'm striving to put across. its complicated. I remember when I think of the word "Eran-Igbe" I felt disgusted thinking it as "Poo Meat" only to realize it actually means "Bush meat" |

I for one believe that the old language of the Yoruba was Akoko but in a proto form more related to Igbo and Edo than it is today. Just like in Britain there are still a few Celtic languages including Irish, Welsh and a few in England, we also have Akokoid languages remaining in Yoruba land. Those languages are directly descended from our old languages. They will be close to Orofe, the old Ife language known to many Awos. The present Yoruba language is descended from the Kemitic Egyptian in exactly thesame way English is descended from old German. Those Akokoid tongues are the old languages of Yoruba people which means the people are more proto Ife than the people in Ile Ife who now speak the new language derived from Kemitic Egyptian. Yoruba language has nothing to do with Kemetic language. nothing about Yorubas descended from Egypt. we are pure west Africans if we must trace our origins outside west Africa. .. such proto-YEAI language would still be part of the Niger-Congo languages. .. not an Afro-Asiatic language which ancient Egypt spoke |

He reproved the Israelites countless times for paying homage to other gods. You should know this so well. That's why your position is inconsistent with what the Bible says.
Far from that„ a genuine Christian works with the truth. Gods word is truth. Unfortunately for you, Abraham didn't turn his back away from the God of his father's house. .. where in the bible did it appear he did? that Christians hold him so dear to not imagine him a pagan doesn't change real facts revealed by study in fact knowledge of Yahweh(a tribal mountain God) came to Abraham through an ancient Midianite clan of smiths (these were the Kenites; mentioned severally in the bible) .... Over time Abraham discovered Yahweh as a Personal deity. .. It was yahweh that asked of him; his son Isaac in sacrifice. notice how The sacrifice was to be done on a mountain Moses' father-in-law was a kenite and priest of Yahweh. Moses discovered yahweh on a mountain. Mountains like Zion and Horeb(its other side was called Sinai) have been described as Yahweh's dwelling place in fact if you want biblical proof that Yahweh was just another deity in the list of many deities in the middle east I will give you. so my position is very in line with the bible .... Abraham was just like any average pagan it seems to me that a "genuine" Christian is one who is blind to truth. |

stonemasonn: Abraham worshiped El Shaddai (god of the mountain). this is the personal God lawani talked about. as the deity said to Moses ‘I am Yahweh. To Abraham and Isaac and Jacob I appeared as El Shaddai; I did not make myself known to them by my name Yahweh.’ (Exodus 6:2–3) yahweh isn't just the Deity of mountains but stars too. .. in the bible. .. countless mention of "Hosts of heaven" under Yahweh's command is made In the Exodus story, Jethro, Moses’ Kenite (one of the Midianite clans - they were ancient Arabs) father-in-law, is a priest of Yahweh (Exod 18:7-11) even though he is not an Israelite. By combining this observation with Moses’ “discovery” of Yahweh in Midian and other passages, many scholars concluded that Yahweh had originally been a Midianite god whom the Israelites learned about from Jethro via Moses and not Abraham. Abraham's connection to Yahweh was as a Personal deity ... we have this in yorubaland too. one diety can be venerated in your town/family but your personal deity is the one that works with your Ori Yahweh comes from Sinai. He dawns upon us from Seir. he shone forth from Mount Paran. (Deuteronomy 33:2) this passage tells us where yahweh is really from. Pls read Habakkuk 3:3-7 see how it describes the origin of Yahweh as well as the fact that his power lays with rocks, mountains and the likes.. a reference to Midian was also made Deuteronomy 32:8–9 describes the sons of El Elyon(The Most High; not yahweh but a higher God), including Yahweh, each receiving his own people: When the Most High (Elyon) gave the nations their inheritance, when he separated humanity, he fixed the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of divine beings, for Yahweh's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage. |

Jewish accounts say his father was working for Nimrod. general knowledge that Nimrod lived 5000 years ago it's not even general knowledge that Nimrod ever existed. Jewish accounts say Abraham was thrown into fire by a Sumerian King. ...no name of the Sumerian king given. .. everyone just seems to call up the name "Nimrod" "Namrud" or "Nimrod" was the arabic/Hebrew name of the Sumerian God of hunt - Ninurta not an actual person from Sumer Nimrod is the person referred to as father of Oduduwa in Yoruba stories but he was his ancestor and not his father because Oduduwa lived not more than 1500 years ago. Pls take this to culture section. it has no place here Anything can be written by Jews but they are not in a position to tell the stories of other people. They just can not go and say these are the children of Esau while others are the children of Ishmael. Abraham was just one man of millions and during his days there were many nations, he himself encountered many Kings in Bible stories. So there is no way he can be the father of so many people. Haggai was an Egyptian or Ethiopian, so when sent away she would have returned with her child to her people and not to Sumeria. There are many prominent people in pre Judaic South Arabian history and it is blasphemous to say those people are descendants of Abraham. They are not. When someone is credited as father or founder of a people. ..doesn't mean all the people are actual descendants by blood. Ishmael and his mother didn't return to Egypt or move to Sumer, they left Abraham and met the Jurhum arabs.....many other ancient Arabs exist ie. Thamud, Ad, Kenites, Amalekites, Jadis, Qahtan |

truthman2012: Christianity is not a religion, it is a way of life. Besides, as a born-again Christian, you are sure of your relationship with God by His Spirit. So it doesn't matter what anybody says. topic has finally changed. well for your information. Christianity is not a way of life. ... culture is a way of life culture is integral to an ethnic identity.
