dude,

IF you really intend selling cars in this forum you will have to provide a bit more information, as per the forum rules and quite frankly best business practices in that people are more likely to contact you the more information you provide, pictures, age, location of car etc.

AutosRe: What Are The Dangers Of Buying A Naija Used Car by mastro: 1:10pm On Mar 05, 2009
please, my fellow nlanders, sombody i do not know very well wants to sell a car that has already been used in nigeria to me. The price is not too cheap, but am just being sceptical about buying a car already used in nigeria. The car is still in top shape enginewise and bodywise. Am afraid of either buying a stolen car or a car with registration problems like custom papers. Etc. Please advice me. Thanks.
Well you should always buy a secondhand car on condition, by it's very nature there always some risk regarding teh condition. When buying a Naija used car this is even more important and in some ways is an advantage, I suggest taking your mecho to look at the car, take it for a good test drive and if it all checks out go for it.
AutosRe: Importing Cars Over 10 Years Old by mastro(op): 3:44pm On Mar 03, 2009
still awaiting a reply, as it seems asking this question in threads of cars outside the country over 10 years old is deemed derailing.
AutosRe: RHD To LHD Conversion - The Facts. by mastro: 4:36pm On Mar 01, 2009
Mercedes Benz CLK is £1,850 inclusive of parts and labour.
That is a lot less than I expected.
AutosRe: RHD To LHD Conversion - The Facts. by mastro: 10:37am On Mar 01, 2009
But I need a make / model to price up a conversion, there are hundreds of models out there, and cost of conversion for all will vary.
Could you use the above example of a CLK to give us an estimate.

My thinking is that a 2006 CLK will be worth maybe £17k in the UK, a 350 clk Conv in America (they don't have a 230komp) will cost maybe $25k (£18k)

Assuming Clearing and shipping costs are the same for simplicity and using figures from www.autotrader.co.uk and www.cars.com respectively

There is of course a sentimental value in a car you've owned from new, you know how it's been used and there is a cost involved in either going to America yourself or commissioning someone to get it for you.

So we need to weight the cost of above against the conversion costs.

I personally think people are looking at the original cost of the cars, in above case maybe £35k as opposed to the replacement cost.
AutosImporting Cars Over 10 Years Old by mastro(op): 8:39am On Feb 27, 2009
Question for the forum, my understanding is that it is illegal to import cars over 10 years old into Nigeria.

I think it is illegal, if anyone knows better please correct me.

I know that initially the reason for importing cars via Cotonou was the congestion and corruption at the Nigerian ports, however it has been implied that it is legal to bring in cars over 10 years old via this route.

I'm not disputing the fact that people do bring in old cars from there, query is as to the legality.
AutosRe: . by mastro: 2:12pm On Feb 26, 2009
@go4gold107,

It is NOT Illegal to Clear Cars from Benin Republic as far as Nigerian Custom Duties are paid, Most of the Cars Less than 9 years Are Imported & Cleared

through Benin Republic and Nigerian Customs Duties Are paid.
OH YES IT IS,  it's called smuggling for a reason.
Or would you like to point out to me the exception for cars imported over a land border.

AutosRe: Derailing Car Adverts Threads by mastro: 8:01am On Feb 23, 2009
Well this is ot a trading forum. It is a forum for anything auto enthusiasts.
There was a time when there was a handful of dealers on this forum, but now it seems like 60% of the posters are trying to sell to remainig 30%, !0% is keyboard traffic.

Its difficult for users not interested in buyingto scroll throuh 2 pages before they find one issues to relate to.
So its easier to jump into one of the numerous sales threads.
Well said, this is NOT a "trading forum" it is a forum for like minded people to exchange information and generally gist, that said it is generally accepted that dealers and individuals can sell cars on here, however while there are a "few" intentional thread "derailers" (usually other dealers) many a time it is people being simply curious.

On VINs, remember not everybody knows what a VIN is or it's uses or the fact that for a newish car to be declared Salvage, (beyond economical repair) is a very big deal.

I remember years ago going to the port and seeing rows of trailer heads with 3 cars stacked on the back of each with their roofs cut off and put inside them (to make space) and thinking that whoh someone is going to spend their life savings buying a pile of junk that may well kill them, that is not to say that Salvage cars can't be repaired to a safe standard, it is just simply that they usually are not.

Oh and remember this is the INTERNETS so everyone get their own mouth and can say anything they like. (including me grin )

AutosRe: Chassis Number Or VIN Is Recommended On Every Listing by mastro: 9:58pm On Dec 05, 2008
It's Friday night, so I've a few min's before hitting the town

Mr Martins, are really a car dealer, no really hear me out, it's not a baseless question, I ask because you seem to think that VINs are only  relevant for North American cars, now if you were actually a European based car dealer you might have heard of HPI which is the UK equivalent of carfax, which believe it or not uses that magic number to run checks as well I suspect there is a German equivalent as well, and has been pointed out above many a time the bloody VIN is visible through the window screen so it is not I repeat not a secret code that allows you to magically steal someone’s car.

Wait O I'm not finished if you really were a car dealer then as I pointed out above you would probably have had cause to buy parts for cars and as such would probably have been asked for the VIN at some point during  your long and illustrious career as a car dealer
AutosRe: 2002 EXPLORER FOR SALE 4X4 AC CD PLAYER ALARM REMOTE LEATHER 1.45M by mastro: 9:06am On Dec 04, 2008
If it is a condition of sale i will comply betterstill close my advert.
I can only deduce that Sellers are encouraged to show their VINS of cars on sale.

However, asking for VINS is like asking for a person's Social Security Number or National insurance number.

It is a data am not willing to give away online unless i find a serious buyer.
My wish should be respected please

There are more important factors to worry about than VINS.

Before you buy a car i expect a buyer to View the car carefully and ask for documentation.
I believe this is more important that VIN. when you see the document you can verify yourself
with the physical car.
IF rather than provide a VIN you would remove the advertisement, then I suspect you have something to hide and your prospective buyers on this forum will run a mile and a half.

If those seem like hash words then tough, this issue has been rehashed over and over again and the owner of the forum has requested that VIN's be provided. As I and many others have pointed out in the sticky post there is simply no reason not to.
AutosRe: Chassis Number Or VIN Is Recommended On Every Listing by mastro: 4:51pm On Dec 02, 2008
While yes, you require the VIN to order new keys, you will also be asked for proof of ownership, I recently in the UK ordered a spare key for a 307 in Nigeria and had to jump through hoops, they wanted registration docs, proof of identity and proof of address, bearing in mind that it wasn't my car I had to tender, registration docs, passport of owner, my passport, proof of my UK address (utility bills) before they would cut me a key. (Mr Ademole try approaching a UK dealer to cut a spare key and see for yourself)

Lets approach this logically since VIN'S are visable through the window screen if manufacturers cut keys for anyone with a VIN number then I shall be visiting Inspired car lot and driving away in the X6.

Further evidence that this is a non issue is the fact that if you check www.cars.com, www.autotrader.com or www.ebay.com advertised cars show their VIN numbers.

As a slight aside another very good use for VIN's is parts, so when my people in Gidi need parts I walk into a dealer anywhere in the world quote them the VIN and I'm sure of getting the correct part so next time you get told silly money for a part in Gidi, use your friends abroad to get your parts, even including air freight it's mostly cheaper.
