Christianity Etc › Re: Following The Bible by mazaje(op): 6:25am On Sep 21, 2011
globexl:
Two days ago, a lady was preaching to me on how satan fell from grace and so on. So I politely asked her show it to me in the bible. She did not know where to  find it in her bible. She promised to look for the chapter when she gets home and would come me back to let me know. Well, its been two days now and she has not called me .
The point is that she has no idea where the satan story came from but she has believed it all her life .And so have almost all christians. They have no idea where the satan, Lucifer and the fallen Angel story came from.
Any christian volunteers from the house wish to enlighten us?
You won't believe many of the things that are conventional christian narratives no have basis in the bible. . . .one of such doctrines is the end of day doctrine about new world order and the global currency . . .Nothing like that is to be found in the bible, what you have are a few bible verses that are trotted out and salted heavily with current conspiracy theories, yet many christians believe it is to be found in the bible. . . .

good work. i bet there are even more to talk on.

@frosbel
you dont sound too impressive at all. so what did mazaje do wrong? are you not reading the plain words?
Never mind frosbel. . . .The guy is high on some imaginary individual holy spirit that keeps on telling him that his own interpretation and opinion of the bible ALONE is true while all others are false. . . .The truth of the matter that frosbel doesnt want to address the fact that him and other christians like him simply cherry pick which verses to follow, which to condemn others with, and which to ignore based solely on their own personal emotional whims, and nothing more. . .

i'd love to be involved in this, hopefully mazaje would not run away as usual. You have an habit of disappearing it seems.
To start with, the Word of God is living, not set in stone but written on flesh. It follows that you'd encounter 'complexities' similar to encountering a human being. Another thing is poor understanding of the Word of God, caused by varying factors like sin, adam's nature, self-will, spiritual maturity, teaching etc.
Another thing is that old testament laws are broadly divided into moral laws and ceremonial laws. No law saves us by the way. We are expected to keep/obey moral laws though many christians do not know this unfortunately. On the other hand, we're not required to keep ceremonial laws, it's already been kept/fulfilled/obeyed/by-passed for us by Jesus Christ.ist.
I was feeling sleepy when I replied you yesterday. . . .I don't run away from threads you should know that by now. . . .

What you have said really doesn't make much sense. . . .Some specific OT laws were changed by Jesus, such as abolishing the Sabbath laws, laws like an eye for eye for and eye, but even the ones he put in place are NOT followed by christians to day, laws such as turn the other check, giving away your coat if a person ask for your shirt e.t.c. . . . .

Then the NT says that the OT are still valid. . . .

Matthew 5:17
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them
Romans 3:31
Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.
So all of that silly talk about Jesus doing away with the law make little sense in such a context. . . . .Many of the rules christians refuse to follow are found in the new testament as well . . . .Example. . . .

"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,  bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic.  Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.Luke 6:27-31
I don't know any christain that does this. . . .Christians never practice this verse,to them such verses do NOT exist in the bible. . . . .Every time I see people just self projecting themselves as God and giving out interpretations that are merely subjective emotional conviction on which verses to follow and which ones to ignore. . . . .Once it agree with their world view then its right and should be followed when it doesn't then its supposed to be discarded regardless of weather it is to be found in the old or new testaments. . . .

And so says the spiritually dead man !!!!
Is homosexuality a sin?. . . .
Christianity Etc › Following The Bible by mazaje(op): 9:05pm On Sep 20, 2011
Is there a method, mechanism or criteria to determine what parts of the bible are to be followed and what parts are OK not to follow?. . .I say this because I see christians picking and choosing moral codes and injuctions from the bible they believe is right for them and discarding what they don't believe is right for them. . . Christians pretend that the morality they do choose is authoritative while ignoring the fact that the parts they don't like have the same authority. The excuse I have heard christians use most is that the morality they don't like was for people of a different time or something along that line when put in a corner just to excuse some absurdity away. . . .Some will say Jesus has done away with the OT laws but they still quote many OT laws to justify their claims or moral principles. . . .

Here is an example:

Homosexuality is a sin. Homosexuality is evil. Homosexuals should not be allowed to marry, for it says in the Word of God:

Leviticus 18:22 (KJV)
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination
Leviticus 20:13 (KJV)
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Romans 1:26-29 (NIV)
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural intimate relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
1 Corinthians 6:9 (NIV)
Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who Be Intimate with men
Pretty clear, right? Christians all over the world make a strong effort to publicly condemn homosexuality.
Pretty clear, right? Many Christians all over the world make a strong effort to publicly condemn homosexuality as a bad thing because Go says its bad in the bible.

Yet there are other rules that Christians seem almost completely silent on, yet there they are, in the word of God, sometimes within a page or two of all of that Same-sex-comdemning stuff. . . .Things like laws regarding women. . . .

Leviticus 15:19-30 (KJV)
19And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. 20And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean.
21And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.
22And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.
23And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even.
24And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean.
25And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.
26Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation.
27And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.
28But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.
29And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
30And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the LORD for the issue of her uncleanness.
In the NT we find injunctions like. . . .

1 Corinthians 14:34-35 (NIV)
Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.
I've meet many female pastors, and most churches I've been in women speak freely. . . .

1 Timothy 2:9-15 (NIV)
I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
If the writer of this verse visit's christian churches today he will shed tears. . . .

Deuteronomy 22:23-24
If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.
Laws of violation

Deuteronomy 22:28-29
If a man is caught in the act of Desecrating a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father.  Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.
Matthew 6:5-8
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
I guess this verse needs to be read to so many Christians. . . . .

I could go on, and on, and on. Needless to say, there are MANY rules in the old and new testaments that are blatantly ignored. Why? Why focus on some rules and not others? Why are some parts of the bible so often repeated, and others completely ignored?

So again I ask:

Is there a method, mechanism or criteria to determine what parts of the bible are to be followed and what parts are OK not to follow? Or it is their individual infallible holy ghosts that tell them so?

People just accept ancient myths, stories and lies hook line and sinker.  Most believers also rely on faith and religion to provide emotional support when life becomes difficult for them instead of taking responsibility for their actions they waste time blaming or giving credits to imaginary Gods and demons for their fortunes or misfortunes. . . . .

That puts even the least religious countries in the region ahead of the United States, which is among the most religious of advanced industrial countries, the study's authors wrote.

What are the proofs? Read this article By Leo Igwe and think twice about the religon you practice, . . .Its a long read but its very interesting. . . .

A new study conducted by the Washington based Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life says that Africans are among the most religious people on earth. The study titled Tension and Tolerance: Islam and Christianity in Sub-Saharan Africa was based on more than 25,000 interviews conducted in more than 60 languages in 19 countries. According to the study at least half of all Christains in Sub-Saharan Africa believe Jesus will return in their lifetime. One in three muslims in the region expect to see the re-establishment of the caliphate-islamic golden age- before they die. At least three out of 10 people across much of Africa said they have experienced divine healing, seen the devil being driven out of a person or received a direct revelation from God. About a quarter believe that sacrifices to ancestors can protect them from bad things happening. Sizeable percentages believe in charms and amulets. Many consult traditional religious healers, and sizable minorities keep animal skins and skills in their homes.

The study found that in many countries across the continent roughly nine in 10 people say religion is very important in their lives.

Do these findings surprise anyone? Surely they shouldn’t. Unless the person is not familiar with the situation in Africa.

These findings do not surprise me at all. I am an African. I was born in Africa. I live and work in Africa. I am non religious though I was born into a religious home. I attended religious schools. I had a typical (African) religious upbringing. I do not believe that Jesus will return again. I do not think that the Biblical Jesus existed and even if he did, I think he’s gone and gone forever. I can’t see the world coming under an islamic caliphate except what we have been experiencing since September 11, 2001. I have never experienced divine healing and I don’t think those who claim to have experienced it are honest to themselves. I have not seen a devil being driven out of any person except some self induced hysteria by some pentecostal con artists. I have not received any revelation from God except may be one day some godly people would claim that their god revealed this piece to me. I don’t believe that sacrifice to the ancestors will protect people from harm. Otherwise the ancestors would be alive today. I think charms and amulets are useless and consulting traditional healers and clerics is a waste of time.

The reasons why Africans are the most religious people in the world are not far fetched. Africans go through religious indoctrination from cradle to the grave. Africans are not allowed by family, society and the state to think, reason or live outside the religious box. In Africa religion is by force not by choice. Religion is by compulsion and not according to one’s conscience. Africans are brought up to believe that there is NO alternative to religion. When in fact there is. So in Africa, it is either you are religious or you are nobody-you are not a human being, you are nothing. There is too much social and political pressure on Africans to be religious and to remain religious. The social, political and sometimes economic price of leaving religion, renouncing religion or criticizing religion is so high.

So Africans are religious willy nilly. Africans profess all sorts of religious crap even when they know it is all nonsense.

At home, religious indoctrination is the first form of orientation an African child receives. At a very early and impressionable age, infants are taught to recite meaningless syllables called prayers. Children are brainwashed by parents with various religious and spritiual myths. Their minds are infused with all sorts of religious dogmas. Parents ensure that children are brought up in their faith- the faith of the family and the faith of their fathers. Children are taught to believe and follow, and not to question religious teachings even when there is every reason to do so. Some of the findings of the Pew Forum constitute the ‘sacred’ teachings which African kids receive and are told not to challenge, examine, criticize or renounce. African children are brought up to believe them and to swallow them hook , line and sinker. Not to question one’s family religion is seen as virtous and as a mark of a good child. This religious tradition is upheld and handed down unchallenged from one generation to another in Africa.

The religious brainwashing continues in schools. Most African colleges are religious indoctrination centers. Western missionaries and Arab jihadists brought formal education(the model widely used today) to the continent. They established schools to win converts and recruit new members, not really to educate Africans. So schools in Africa are covert churches and mosques. Education is faith based. And this religious tradition is still upheld in most schools across the continent. Some of the findings of the study are what African puplis are taught everyday in schools. They constitute what African students recite and memorize as part of their compulsory morning devotions.

Pupils at one islamic primary school near my house in Ibadan sing this song everyday as part of their morning devotion.

We are soldiers. We are soldiers.

Fighting for Islam. Fighting for Islam

In the name of Allah, we shall conquer, we shall conquer

Every morning these children are made to recite that they are muslim children ; that they believe in Allah and Mohammed as his messenger. What do you expect from these children as adults after going through this religious drilling and being brainwashed with these superstitious messages? Do you think they will ever grow to say that religion-in this case Islam is not important in their lives? As in their homes, African students are taught to blindly accept the so called divine revelations without questions. They are induced to try and have some encounter with God or to have some spiritual experience as a manifestation of faith or piety. Children and youths are made to believe that professing articles of faith is a mark of a good student. And that education is not complete without religion or belief in God. So why should anybody be surprised that most Africans attach so much importance to religion.

This religionizing continues in politics and in the state houses across Africa. State power is used to endorse, promote and privilege religion. In Africa, prayer, piety and politics go together. Religion and politics mix. States are not separate from churches and mosques. So there is very high political pressure on individuals to be religious-and to remain religious and faithful even when they are not convinced of the religious teachings or would prefer to be faithless. Many African countries have adopted a religion or some religions as state or official religions. For instance in Morocco, the King is not only the president of the country, but also the commander of the faithful. So every Moroccan is under political pressure to be a faithful – an islamic faithful, particularly a sunni islamic faithful. The president of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh is addressed as Dr, Alhaji, Sheikh …, among others. Some years ago he added to the list of his presidential duties praying for the citizens and trying to heal the sick including those who have HIV/AIDS using some verses in the Koran. In the self-styled islamic republics, anyone who is not a muslim cannot be president. Is there any special value being a muslim adds to the post of the president? None. In Gambia, the government erected magnificent mosques in all public schools in the country. Meanwhile these are schools without good classroom blocks, no libraries or laboratories.

In Africa, politicians have made it look as if to be a good citizen one must be religious or expressly pious. African politicians have made it seem as if theocracy, not democracy is the best form of government. And that the Bible and the Koran are the best constitutions. In fact the Bible and the Koran are the best constitution no country ever had. African politicians strive to ensure that state legislations are based on these‘holy books’ and that any policy, program or proposal that is not in line with the sacred texts are thrown out. Another reason why there is high level of piety in Africa is because most Africans do not think for themselves. They allow clerics to think for them. Africans consult their priests, bishops, sheikhs, marabous, traditional medicine men and women whenever they have problems or when they want to embark on a major project. And they accept whatever they give them including charms like holy water, olive oil as solutions and remedies. They do whatever they recommend they do including carrying out ritual killing and sacrifice.

Lastly Africans are deeply religious due to lack of human rights particularly religious freedom in Africa. This may sound like a contradiction. But it is not. Some may argue that the high religiosity in Africa should be due to ‘too much religious freedom’. No, it is not so. Rather it is due to no guarantee of religious freedom, no protection of freedom of conscience. Africans do not enjoy or exercise their freedom of religion or belief. Africans are denied with impunity this basic human right by state and non state actors. Africans are forced to be religious or to remain religious. That is why they are ‘too religious’. The mechanisms to protect and defend the full human rights of those who change their religion or renounce or criticize religious beliefs or those who do not profess any religion at all are weak and non existent. Religious believers and non believers are not equal before the law. Many Africans are religious because they don’t want to be in the minority. They don’t want to renounce what the majority upholds. They don’t want to denounce what the state or society revers. Many Africans are religious because they just want to play along.

Africans are among the most religious people on earth due to failure of family upbringing, failure of human rights and the rule of law, failure of educational system, social and political pressure and bad governance. Africans are religious because they cannot but be religious.

To all of you divorcing your nagging wives; just a thought, how do you know that the next Mrs wont be a nag too?

I am only asking o!
I have zero tolerance for a nagging or violent woman, violence will NEVER be tolerated and abuse of what ever form will not be condoned, I don't abuse and no body should abuse me, I left my job when former boss was always abusing me, she was a racist, I called her off in front of every body threw the papers in her face and left the office, now am much richer and better off because I left that office. . .Once I left my mum because she was so unbearable. . . .She complains TOOOO much and was verbally abusive. .She was very hot tempered at that time and doesnt know how to control herself. . . I left her when I was 21. . . .They called me and told me that my mum was sick and I told them that she is no longer my mum. . .When I came back we had a long talk, she  cried, apologized and changed, till today about 8 years later she has never raised her voice on me or insulted me no matter what I did, and I have done some crazy things. . . .Never knew that people could change completely until she changed. . . .

If I marry a woman and she changes into a nag or violent person after the wedding(most people change after the wedding that's when they reveal their true colors) she is leaving, if I marry another one and she also becomes a nag or an abusive person, she will also leave. . . .I know people that have been through 3  marriages and my life and the lives of others around are NOT better than theirs in any way. . .They are happy and are leading fulfilled lives even after 3 divorces. . . .Nothing new there. . . .No form of abuse or violence will be tolerated. . . .You try it you are out. . . .

@ OP

How do I deal with a nagging partner?. . . .I just ignore them. . . .Most times I walk away and talk things over when things have calmed down. . .Other times I try to stand my grounds when I feel am right. . .If  it doesn't work then I walk away and wait for things to die down before we have our normal conversation and iron out issues. . . .

Stop exagerrating jor. Only a mad woman will act like this.
I have seen many women that behave like that. . . .One of my friend is married to a woman that behaves like that, she feels everything must be about her and she must always have things her way,  she is very selfish and hot tampered. . . . .His younger brother beat her up so bad the last time I visited Nigeria because she slapped him over a non issue that had to do with her son, imagine her slapping a 30 year old man in my presence and in the presence of her 2 kids because he tried to correct her son who ran away crying to her, she came down yelling and slapped the guy on the grounds that he has no right to correct her son, what ever her son does should be reported to her she said. . . .I was there but I didn't step in  and stop the guy when he was giving her the beatings of her life because she deserves it, after he beat her silly and she lost consciousness I stepped in pulled him back, I called my friend who was actually on his way, her husband later confided in me and told me he was glad his brother gave her the beatings of her life, he only yelled at his brother to keep his respect and nothing more. . . .Those that behave like animals deserve to be treated as one. . . .That's just it. . . .The friend of mine is a nairaland member. . .He is a christian that doesn't believe in divorce. . . .

@mazaje:

Thanks for joining in. What then would you say when balance is shown when the Bible says "you ask and receive not because you ask amiss"

Truth is you select verses that tend to extremism and dogmatism AND are supported by the criminals for whom this is business and who manipulate without looking at the Spirit behind the words
Your welcome. . . .The thing is those verses are in the bible and are alleged to have been spoken by Jesus himself. . .He said if you truly believe what ever you ask for will be given to you. . . .Am not talking about people that ask for wealth(by the way there is nothing wrong in being rich) am talking about people that pray for protection or healing for their innocent children. . . .Once a very good friend of mine who is an exemplary christian prayed in my presence for protection against accident for him and his family before they embarked on a journey to Abuja. They were 4 in the car him, his daughter that was 3 years old at that time, his wife and his younger sister. . .Along the way they had a very bad accident, his daughter is now blind in one eye and broke so many bones, his wife broke her hip bone and some other bones, he broke both legs, his younger sister was paralyzed. . .They are all ok now after very expensive medical treatment in Germany. . .They are no longer the way they were before but they all can walk on their own( him and his wife still limp though) only for the younger sister that is still on wheel chair. . .There are uncountable stories and cases like this that happen every day and all the time to very true believers. . . . .

Asking for God to protect you on a journey is not asking amiss is it?. . . .What exactly are God's plans for a person to remain on a wheel chair for the rest of his/her life? How does that help the persons belief or glorify God the way many people always say? Even Jesus was written to have said that whatever you ask in his  name, he will do it, that the Father may be glorified, no?. . . . .They are verses in the bible that talk about God protecting his own the way a father will protect his children. . . .If the bible is true then why are we not seeing these things happening?. . . .

The bible is very clear on how prayers are supposed to work. . . .According to the bible faith is all that is needed. . . .

If the bible is true then Christians are NOT supposed to be complaining about unanswered prayers. . .The bible is VERY CLEAR about prayers and how they are supposed to work. . . .

I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. Matthew 21:21

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24

"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it." John 14: 12-14

If the bible is true then Christians that truly believe and have faith are not supposed to be complaining about unanswered prayers. . . . .
