naptu2: Fashola receives protesting Balogun traders, appeals for restraint

Written by Wednesday, 20 February 2013

Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Monday appealed to the Island Fashion Dealers from Balogun Market, Lagos to exercise restraint with the government just as he promised to visit the market to determine its exact location and the state of things.

The governor spoke at the open grounds of the Lagos House, Ikeja when he received the traders, who staged a peaceful protest to the Governor’s Office to protest the continued closure of their market in the aftermath of a fire disaster in October last year.

Governor Fashola, who volunteered to visit the site of the market following claims and counter claims about the exact location of the market by the traders, also said the government owed all its citizens a duty to safeguard their lives.

He apologised to the traders for any inconveniences they might have been facing over the fire incident which ravaged their structures in October and noted that he had to adjourn the State Executive Council meeting to come and receive them.

He explained that the report he is getting indicates that since the fire incident occurred the building has not been stable and that government would be failing in its responsibilities if it allows people to carry on their business in such an unsafe environment.

Governor Fashola said that the fact that the building seemed safe to the traders does not mean it should be accepted as being safe until it is certified to be so by the relevant authorities of the State.

Speaking earlier, the spokesperson of the group, Mrs Moji Ibrahim claimed that the plaza that the traders occupied was not involved in the fire incident caused by firecrackers in Central Lagos.

She said the traders decided to stage a protest to the Alausa seat of government when it waited endlessly and did not get a quick response from officials of the state government on what step it intends to take concerning the burnt market. She said the situation has brought untold hardships to many families and dependants of the traders.

The traders who were happy about the Governor’s response and promise to personally visit the market sang in praise of his leadership qualities and dispersed peacefully.

The Governor was joined by members of the State Executive Council including the Special Adviser on Central Business District, Mrs Derin Disu, Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Wale Ahmed and his Information and Strategy counterpart, Mr Lateef Ibirogba among others.

And he visited the place the next day as promised.

Mobsync: Get ur acts straight. Goodluck Jonathan is the the president and commander in chief of the armed forces and must have sent the soldiers there but it's one thing to send someone somewhere and it's another for the person to do as sent. But with the Nigerian situation today, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the state governor or even the vc that called the soldiers with Jonathan knowing nothing about it. But it's bad, really really bad.
that may be correct. It has once happened before, when GEJ was the substantive president when Umar was sick. Soldiers were dispatched by Turai without GEJ's knowledge. and i guess nothing happened at the end of the day

la furia: this what fuels jos crisis till today. a disagreement over power, land or money between people causes a fight, one loses and the other win. the fight will end there if they are of same religion or tribe. But the moment the loser realizes that his opponent is of a different tribe or religion, he uses that to fuel the fight and everything escalate even though the initial fight was not as a result of religion or tribe. same thing is happening here. figthing over soccer isnt new, i have seen that happen in viewing centres and soccer pitches between rival streets in this case there is loss of life, the victim family in an attempt to take revenge had to bring others into in by alerting them the guy who commited the crime was of different religion and must have been induce by it. its easy just go to village and shout muslims are killing christians ooo and boom wild wild west, everybody brings out his vest and gun. religion is so powerful that it makes one to see what is wrong as right.
You are right. These things have been happening before now, and nobody sees them as religious crisis. but in nigeria of today, this is what has become the other of the day.

i can't remember how many times my street and my brothers street use to fight because of ball (we stay in the same house though but faces different street. i stay with my grandma, so i play for the street where i my grandma's room face) it was fun then men! we even take the fight to grandpa's sitting room upstairs. particularly when you feel the referee 'don do ojoro'.

that was when we were growing up. there was nothing like this one is igbo, hausa or yoruba, abi muslim or christian. every daddy and mummy in the neighborhood is your dad or mum: you are safe with them. they don't need to report you to your parents before you are dealt with when you do anything wrong. infact, just pray your parents don't get wind of it afterwards, because that would amount to double purnishement.

but what do you have this days, 'omo Igbo ni o, ma fowo kan o'

i cry

Islam don surfer!

Just mention violence, and Islam comes to your mind.

Just about some hours ago, I was playing 'monkey post' with some undergraduate students inside the el-kanemi halls of residence at the university of lagos. you need to see how one of them was very disrespectful to me, not minding that i'm much more older than him, imagine, a year one student when i actually graduated in 2007 but stay and work on campus and need to keep fit.

now, this lad actually drew my anger, but my thought is, what would people say if they see me fighting with this little rat, wouldn't they label me as being jobless for playing football with these 'little rats'. i just walked away and let't be.

Now, as a muslim, what would Nlanders have said if I had dealt that guy with a dirty blow for being insulting to me, wey i fit born am, just because i come play ball with them?

shanktang: as much as i do not agree wth the principal's flogging of the student which i think is absolutely wicked, inhuman and an abuse of her person, and should be cautioned very strongly for that, though i think 43 strokes of cane must be a high exagiration, i still want to point out the fact dat the country is a circular state and is runned as such and anything religion is detatched from management of its institutions, thats the reason singing of songs of praises were stoped in all public schools in lagos, the schools have regulations on dress code which i think all parents should ensure they make thier wards abide to, whatever the student have done i'm sure must have come from the high ignorance of the parent to the school's dressing regulations and i think they should have been informed first about it rather than take to floging of the student, based on that alone the principal should be very strongly cautioned.
You are speaking from the two sides of your mouth. one moment, you are condemning the principal's act, and the next minute you are blaming parents for not making their children to address to dress code.

by the way, haven't you read on this thread that students in Lagos schools have the right to wear hijab to school?

mbhs139: Where We Learn
Students cannot learn well and are not likely to behave well in difficult school environments. Students thrive when many factors—both tangible and intangible—combine to produce a positive school climate.

Students care about where they learn, because they spend the better part of most days in class or on the playground, so they care very much about what it feels like to be at school. Is the school safe and clean? Can they trust their teachers? And do teachers believe in and respect them?

These feelings influence how students feel about themselves—how confident they are, what they think of themselves as learners, and what kind of future they see. Such perceptions can have a distinct impact on how well students learn.

Those who think their schools are the “best ever” are more likely to feel confident about themselves as learners than are students who feel they are the targets of bullying, racism, or disrespect. Feelings like these, both positive and negative, define a school’s climate—that is, the personality of the learning environment.
To promote gender equality and empower women, girls must stay in school. It is, in fact, the third goal of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG): "Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015." But what if it isn't that simple, what if by sending girls into schools you are actually exposing them to violence and victimization, to bullying, rape, and molestation by classmates and even by teachers?

For girls in many countries, demoralizing physical and psychological abuse often begins at home, is reinforced in the community, and continues in the classroom. Violence at school may include bullying, harassment, excessive corporal punishment, and sexual abuse. Gender-based violence at school or in the wider community spreads under cover of silence and fear. Girls' vulnerability to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse reflects the low value society often places on them.
PoliticsRe: Religious Crisis In Wukari, Taraba State!!! by mbhs139(m): 7:34am On Feb 24, 2013
Another orgy of religious violence was on Saturday recorded in Wukari, Taraba state with at least five persons killed, many others injured and property destroyed.

The sectarian crisis followed an argument between two football players during a morning training session on the pitch.

Eye-witnesses said an aggrieved Muslim player allegedly gunned down a Christian teammate following the squabble. This triggered retaliatory attacks that led to the death of four persons.

Our source said: “they disagreed over a football related issue during play. One of them felt too aggrieved that he dashed home and brought out a gun and shot his co-argumentator dead”.

mavizzi: @mbhs139, am back for you, I was out of network coverage... What Bleep are u talking? Don't u download files free from the internet? Do u pay, or when u were cheating to pass ur final year exam, was it not unethical practice? You have luck I don't have access to the main question papers in pdf or word, I for upload am... Meanwhile you've benefitted from my upload!!! I'll post more questions when I get home
so, downloading files from the internet is an unethical practice, and you are comparing that with giving people the question to a job aptitude test?

By the way, what has downloading files from the internet got to do with what we are talking about here? Perhaps you mean downloading files to write research or journals, because that's what I do for a living, I'm a research analyst. And for your information, I pay for all my journals and I don't plagiarized, hopefully you know what that means. I'm not talking about the dictionary meaning o.

And how did you know that I cheated in my final exams? You should be, let's say in Primary 2 or 3, depending on your age, when I wrote my final exams, so how did you know?

Look, whether you like it or not, it was ethically wrong for you to be telling people an aptitude test question, totally wrong. It shows how lazy you and those that are praising you are, take or leave it.

naptu2: This is one of the reasons I admired Dr Tai Solarin.

In the 1970s and '80s there was controversy over "morning assembly" in public schools. Non christians were made to pray in the christian way and non muslims were also made to pray in the muslim way at morning assembly.

Solarin was an atheist. He did not believe in God. However, at his school, Mayflower Ikenne, he established the "quiet hour". During the quiet hour, christians could go to a corner and pray in the christian way, muslims could go to a corner and pray in the muslim way and those who do not believe in God could quietly read their books.
things have really changed my brother.

I could remember in those days, Mondays-Wednesdays were for christian prayers on the assembly ground while Thursdays and Fridays are for Muslims.

Believe me, you will even see Christians who recite suratul'fatiha better than some Muslims. I could remember a class mate, Usoro Umoh, who recites the Quranic verses (the popular and short ones) perfectly, just because he partakes in it on the assembly ground.

There was no BH, JAMBS, CAN and their likes during this time. As a matter of fact, I will first go to the Christian fellowship on Fridays, with my Christian friends, because they will share buscuit and sweet, before we all then go for Jumah service. I doubt if such can happen again in Nigeira
