Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday approved the payment of bursary and local scholarship to Lagos State indigenes in tertiary institutions across the country.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, told newsmen that the beneficiaries would be fresh applicants and others receiving subsequent payment.

Bank-Olemoh listed the beneficiaries to include 2015/2016 set and other sets receiving second and third payments for years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015.

He said that the state government was committed to sustaining the scholarship and bursary scheme in spite of the economic situation of the country.

He said that the governor is committed to ensuring that indigenes are empowered through education to contribute productively to the local and global economies.

He said, “The timely release of the awards demonstrates the priority the administration of Gov. Ambode accords to educating its citizens.”

Giving a breakdown of the payment, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mr. Steven Oshinowo, said that the State Government would disburse the sum of N250, 523, 287.99 to 6,368 beneficiaries as bursary award.

Oshinowo also said that N130, 166, 386.56 in local scholarships would be disbursed to 573 successful candidates who took part in the 2015/2016 Local Scholarship Computer- Based Screening Test.

According to him, these sums will accommodate the backlog of outstanding bursary and scholarship payments, as well as current awards for fresh and subsequent beneficiaries.

He said, “We urge beneficiaries to exercise patience as disbursement of the funds will commence in three weeks, at which time beneficiaries will be invited to present relevant documentation to receive their bursary or scholarship awards.”

Earlier this year, over 689 bursary beneficiaries of 2011/2012 set were paid along with 60 students from the School of the Blind and 54 others on Sport Scholarship.

In 2015, the state government also paid N660 million to over 8,567 indigent beneficiaries as bursary and scholarship.

Fela Bankole-Olemoh as ''special adviser on Education''? How? What are the criteria used to appoint people? This guy know next to nothing about the Education sector! He studied Accounting at OAU(if am not mistaken) and does not have any special knowledge about the education sector. For God's sake, there are many specialists, consultants, professors, retired teachers etc who can give good advise on Education, and not all these incompetent guys lobbying for appointments in government.

The hurried implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy is partly responsible.
The FG withdrew money from the commercial banks (where such money could be used to facilitate economic activity and also earn interest) and placed the funds with the CBN where such money would add no value to the economy and without earning any interest.

How does the FG expect the banks to lend to riskier sectors like manufacturing when the FG itself has pulled out its resources? The CBN should lend directly to the manufacturers and farmers.
The TSA may be a good idea for the purpose of accounting for the FG funds in the hands of MDAs, but the funds should not be locked up in the CBN forever. It does not make economic sense.

A building situated at Dosunmu Street, Off Amara Olu Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja collapsed yesterday with a resident identified as Mrs. Faisa confirmed dead.The building collapse was caused by a landslide which occurred in the area.

Rescue operators and officers of the Nigerian Police reportedly stormed the area afterwards to ensure safety of lives and properties.

Also, the Lagos State Commissioner For Environment, Babatunde Adejare, reportedly visited the scene of the incident moments after it occured. He however advised residents of the shanties in the area to evacuate adding that the structures would be demolished soon.

Is the hair (beard) not a creation of God? Is it a sin to grow beard? Did prophets in the Bible e.g. Moses, Elija, John the Baptist etc not grow beard?

Now, some people have abandoned the real essence of Christianity and have started propounding their own self-made ideology. This kind of loose talk can even make some people e.g. couples. families to start having issues because a lady cannot prey for an hour or because a good and responsible gentleman has beard on his face.

It is better you do something to improve your knowledge, skills, qualification etc and gather more experience before expecting juicy appointments.
