A simple online search will tell you that the premise of this article is false. Nigeria has a lot of loose women but that is true everywhere. There is not, nor has there ever been a shortage of women who prefer uncommitted sexual activity. Women have always used their bodies to acquire resources, the example used here is not unique to Nigeria - that is part of the human condition. Belgium heads the pack with a divorce rate of 71% USA has a divorce rate of 53% (not 35% as claimed here) See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divorce_demography Please stop peddling false stats. Thank you. |
lozanni:There are several options. Ethiopian Airlines fly to Sao Paulo - they are probably the best airline on the continent at the moment. Their staff are always good and they have proven to be reliable. Etihad ply that same route. Great airline again. Qatar Airways also. Iberia do likewise. Air Maroc is one of the last airlines that I would think of using, even before I heard this story. |
Sounds like Air Maroc are incompetent. Thanks for the heads up, not that I would ever use them anyway. OP - could you have flown Ethiopian Airlines to Sao Paulo and then onwards to Mexico City? |
The Feminist Bible is similar - instead of 'he' it says 'she'. |
How can you be too broke to have a wedding but not too broke to raise children? Dumb question. |
GodMode:Most nations have begun to introduce Mandarin into their curriculum as a result of China's greater economic importance. Mandarin is the most widely spoken first language on the planet. But in terms of number of places and territory English is the prime language. Portuguese may be spoken in Brazil but the best schools there teach English because they understand that English is the international language of business. Ending the use of local languages is about fostering a common identity, not pandering to an inferiority complex. If you want to talk about that inferiority complex then we need to deal with the religious aspect which has been far more damaging to the Nigerian identity and Nigerian society. No one in Nigeria has been killed because they addressed another in English but people have died for not speaking Fulfulde, Hausa or not being Muslim. I'm not sure what a common language has to do with 'charity' - it should be about practicalities and not petty sentiment. |
Religion should have no place in schools. If religion is truly a matter of personal conscience then it should not be on public display. |
He can't say anything else. How can a man with a track record of making bigoted statements condemn another bigot? It's time we get rid of all these useless elders, they have no place in public life. Let them advise quietly in the background if they so wish but they should not be holding public office nor should they be listened to with so much attention by the media. It is their generation that woefully failed this nation afterall. |
GodMode:You can use your local language in an informal setting, you can't stop people from speaking how they want to but it has to be stressed that English must be taught in schools (and not pidgin which is essentially useless) otherwise the next generation will struggle to integrate into the workplace and employers will continue to complain about the lack of viable graduates. China has over one billion, likewise India, America has over 300 million, Indonesia has over 200 million, Brazil likewise - Nigeria is not alone in having a large population - the difference is that they have an acceptance that a common language is necessary for progress. They all have several 'ethnic' groups spread out over a much larger land mass yet they understand that a commonality of language is vital. Entertainers can sing in whatever language they so desire, be it local or otherwise but in doing so they potentially limit their audience. The best known international artists sing in English. And this is my overall point - by insisting on using localized languages you limit your reach, you limit your ability to influence and to prosper. To claim that encouraging the universal use of a language will kill a people is naive. People adopt different languages as a matter of practicality all the time. Culture is constantly changing. What kills a people is stagnation, the childish need a cling to outmoded and useless practices. |
GodMode:You said 'Both regions' - there are more than two, unless you are calling for the secession of the north. We already have people moving around the nation, this has had minimal impact on tolerance. The Federal government colleges and universities are a good idea that work because the children and young people are taught in a common language. If you have more than three languages already (most of them are in fact dialects and not 'languages') you will upset some of the people by asking them to forgo recognition. It would be more equitable and practical to use the international language of trade that is currently part of the educational curriculum, namely English, than to force people in Port Harcourt to speak Igbo; force people in Benin to speak Yoruba. We do not need 'ethnic tolerance' as there are no 'ethnic' differences when one looks at Nigeria from a global perspective - the differences are largely linguistic and religious, neither of which is set in stone or practical. The perceived cultural differences are already beginning to blend and that is a good thing, a nation needs common ideas and practices. |
GodMode:You want three regions within three languages for one country - what reason do you have for such a suggestion? Who would benefit from such a divisive policy? Why not just have one language for the nation and keep things simple? P.S. Why is it always the leaders? Are Nigerians drones? Can they not think for themselves. |
GodMode:That is a pipe-dream that has never worked anywhere. People need to be educated on the need to accept best practices and the ability to use reason over sentiment otherwise the future is bleak. |
GodMode:Cases like this should force people to realise how silly their 'tribe' concept is - you have petty linguistic differences. If you wish to move forward as a nation it might be time to get rid of them. |
Nigerians won't hold people to account at home but want to hold foreigners to account abroad? People who barely hide their disdain for your presence? What a peculiar group of people. You cannot expect people to treat you with more respect than you treat yourself. |
Did anyone watch this documentary? What did you think? |
akinboyepelumi1:The point is that state of origin should not matter. No one should be made to pledge allegiance to a place that they have never been to - which is clearly what happened with this girl. I'm sure she knows her place of birth. If we are serious about unifying Nigerian we need to get rid of some of these peculiar and divisive habits. |

ThisMeansWAR:As if Igbos are the only people in Nigerian reaping from that which they did not sow. Piracy needs to be dealt with but Igbos are not the only people engaged in piracy nor are they the only ones engaged in dishonest trade. |
Hos ain't loyal. |
Joeadamxx:What about the Saudi boys who go to Lebanon to pick up a temporary wife? Or did you not hear about the HIV outbreak that culminated in Beirut as a result of their activities? Saudi boys take advantage of poverty in Yemen to take temporary wives there too. And now they are taking advantage in the wars in Syria and Irq to exploit the ladies of those country, |
This is why a lot of these elders need to be pushed to one side. Very few of them have anything to offer besides hatred and senility. |
Do what the girls do, prostitute yourself to the lecturers. Your grades will surely rise. Best of luck. |
Chosen1984:If there is one thing I like about northerners it is the modesty in dress. I can't tolerate the need for some ladies nowadays to display everything to the world, it is completely unnecessary. |
JaaizTech:Thank you for your response, I see you put much thought into it. The Chinese were only able to lift hundreds of millions out of poverty once they had a sustainable level of population growth, a direct result of their one child policy. India, even with it's economic success is still mired in poverty because they have a ridiculously high rate of population growth, there are a greater proportion of people living in abject poverty in India than in Africa. Nigeria's population growth is unsustainable, in 1991 the population of Nigeria was comparable to that of Germany (88 million vs 80 million), now it is 170 million. There is no economy on this planet that provide amenities when the population expands as such a nonsensical rate - how is any government supposed to know what amenities to build when the growth rate is so dramatic and census figures so unreliable? You listed the 10 largest economies but in terms of wealth on individuals, China, Russia, India and Brazil pale in comparison to the nations with responsible population growth - nations like Germany and Japan are growing older but they are not growing poorer and they have the means to take care of their citizens. The fact the USA has a visa lottery is because of countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh where reckless breeding habits are tolerated which in turn makes it difficult for a government to govern effectively. Large numbers might attract commerce but dramatic population growth is not usually associated with economic prosperity. Nigeria is already large enough in population to be the largest in Africa and significant on a global setting but to have a population that doubles every 20 years is farcical - it is suggestive of a shambolic and backwards society. We should be asking what the 'carrying capacity' is of the environment that we inhabit and then attempting to tailor policy to ensure that the population does not grow at such a rate to destroy that which provides us with the means to sustain life. Without planning, how do you expect to have a successful society? You think that it is by providence that roads are built? Schools are built? Dams are built? Already we have Fulani herdsmen killing those on settled lands because they seek green pasture for their cattle, what will happen when the land is used up to take care of a larger population? Will they kill those that live on the estates that were built to house the burgeoning populace? Those that have an excessive amount of children display a mentality that can be best described as careless, with little regard for quality of life, the availability of resources. It is also a security risk to have so many young people appear into the job market at once - no economy expands at such a rate to accommodate the population growth that Nigeria has. Until population growth is lower Nigeria will continue to face the social ills that come about as a result of having so many frustrated idle minds. I don't know why anyone would apply the history of the Arabian desert to life in 21st century Africa. Boko Haram are the children of the Koranic verse that you quoted as it is quite clear that Allah does not provide for their needs. They would not resort to killing innocent civilians nor would they be able to recruit if there was a benevolent figure that took care of all beings. Nevertheless, we do not need to kill our babies in 2015, we have family planning and birth control measures - from condoms, to cups to the pill. Why not make use of information and knowledge? Why handicap oneself with an old book? |
Jbenue:They're not worried about sustainable or being responsible because 'Allah will provide'. Meanwhile the Boko Haram boys are fighting the wrong enemy - if they wanted to do some good they would deal with those who have squandered the oil money that is sent north every month, to no end. |
Ilekeh:Stats are not sentiment. That there is a greater rate of poverty in the north is fact. Greater illiteracy rates, fact. Worse WAEC and NECO results, fact. Polio in the north is a fact. Fistula in the north is a fact. Again, Sanusi is not the norm. The majority of children raised in northern Nigeria are raised in the worst of circumstances. (http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-31101351) |
Ilekeh:Which children? These children are not the norm in northern Nigeria - the overwhelming majority are raised in abject poverty. You wanted to celebrate the fact that northerners have a propensity for having too many children, I simply pointed out that it is reckless for everyone involved. The easiest way to increase or sustain the poverty rate is to have children. The northern states typically struggle with poverty rates of 80% - 90%, we should be advocating for more responsible reproductive habits. Your typical child in the north is struggling to get enough to eat, struggling to get even a primary education, struggling to get even basic healthcare but you reason that northerners should continue to have more children than they can't take care of? |
Anyone who is literate, can reason and who has ever read the Bible should be able to spot a rat. The other fairy tale books are just as silly. |
Ilekeh:Because those children that are not cared for end up on the streets. It is quite evident that most of these people cannot take care of the children that they have. So many of them wind up on the streets begging in cities in the south, I can only imagine how bad the situation is in the north. As a morally conscious human being that is not something I can condone. It is also a huge security risk. Abandoned and neglected children grow up to become hostile and bitter adults or have you already forgotten about Boko Haram? The Chinese long ago realised that some people do not know what is best for them and will continue to engage in backwards and destructive practices that endanger society as a whole as well as themselves, hence the one child policy. China is not a democracy, as such they can institute whatever policies they so desire for the good of their society - sadly in Nigeria we have religious authorities (and their guileless sheep) who stand in the way of progress and thus we cannot even have condoms distributed for the benefit of sexual health, not to speak of family planning. If people are serious about improving living standards in Nigeria and allowing development to flourish then they will behave responsibly of their own accord. Why have 10 children that you can barely take care of when you can have 2 or 3 and raise them with the best of everything? |

China is trying to shore up her population by giving incentives to parents in order to encourage them to have a 2nd child. That's where china is today!!!.
