Ur international office will issue you CPT so u can go and work, earn and return to skool and fund ur studies. but i think this process is possible after 1 full year of studies in ur skool.

You are wrong on the premises of which CPT is awarded. If you don't know, let me say this. You can't defer your admission on the basis of a CPT (Curriculum Practical Training). You must be enrolled in school and classes to be on CPT. The CPT must be a part of your curriculum for you to be eligible and it you must work in a field related to your training.

According to OjaP, most people register for at least a credit CPT class before they graduate and if they are allowed to. He said he was on CPT when he got an Internship with an Oil Company before he graduated and because the company wanted him so bad they paid for his CPT tuition in school. One of my classmates is on CPT right now and I will also need to go for CPT before I can graduate. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY with which you can be on CPT and not be enrolled in school. I suggest you read the rules governing CPT, OPT and H1B.

Also bear in mind, that if you work full time on CPT for up to a year, you will not be eligible for OPT (Optional Practical Training). Those things we might tend to verlook might come back and bite us in the a,ss if we aren't careful.

It's like you don't know what they call www.turnitin.com. All they need is upload the SOP on there and it will tell them what percent of plagiarism is in the SOP. It will even give the exact website where it was copied from (be it 1 or 100 sources, it will list them one after the other) and then collate the percentage together.

I was interviewing for a graduate teaching assistant job in my department and the interviewer who is also my graduate coordinator asked me to write the names of all faculty members in my department on the board. I understand you, but I also think its good to err on the good side of caution. You can never be too cautious. Some people might read that and think it is alright to defer their admission and stay back in America. Some might be lucky and some might not. I for one don't take a gamble with such serious issues.

bigfrancis21: My sister, US Immigration Law does not expressly forbid neither has it expressly stated that you must return to your home country if you defer while in US. I have been searching google for such law and so far I am yet to see where it is stated. I am aware that an F1 student is expected to continue enrolment in school until completion of studies however there are allowances for interruption in-between once official permission is obtained for extension. For example, as in the case of female international students who are pregnant and are about to deliver. In such case, they are allowed extension of studies for a semester or two to allow them time nurse their babies. If you have evidence to prove your statement, I stand to be corrected though.

I understand. But as you said, extension is different from complete deferment. I know of someone that was allowed to take her final exams early enough just cause she was pregnant and will soon deliver. The school expect you to have enough money to cover your expenses which is why they ask for a bank statement. But we could shed more light in this matter by asking the VO on the non-immigrant thread though. That sure will help everybody.

Check F-1 visa rules online. There's always ways to beat the rules but what worked for A might not work for B.

Still doesn't work with that. It doesn't work on POS at all. There used to be a time when I inserted it at the base of the terminal at Walmart and Put my pin but that doesn't work again.

My GTBANK Card does not work on POS again oo I tried to swipe it last week at Kroger and it was denied. I had to use the ATM cos I didn't have Internet banking. But my friend's Skye Bank card works when swiping. Guess what? They charged her lesser exchange rate than GTBANK charges me!

Feexo, check the trains too. Someone told me there are trains between NY and Chicago. It will get you there faster than greyhound buses who are notorious for their snail slow speed.

That being said, did you tell your prof about your plight? I mean, does he know about your present situation about fees? Because for him to tell you to come quickly to school, that means he's trying to arrange something for you. I'm hoping it's something big that means you won't have to defer your admission. Don't waste any extra second in New York biko. Go to school.

All registered students automatically qualify for SSN, and they get allocated same in less than 2 months.

Thank God you're making headway. But your last statement which I bolded is not true. Students do not qualify for an SSN automatically after 2 months. You qualify for an SSN immediately you have a job offer and an offer letter. I got my SSN two weeks after I got to the US, my friend got her's after a week cos she got her job the 3rd day after we got her. The applied for her SSN the same day and she got it after some days.

A Nigerian girl who spent 5years in my school did not have an SSN till she graduated cos she didn't look for a job. She had a state ID tho. When you go to the social security office, You will be asked for your Job Offer Letter first, International Office Consent letter, I-20, I-94, school ID and Passport. If you do not have a job, NO SSN.

That said, as you're on the hunt for a GA right now, try looking for Non-GA jobs likes student worker job in your department or other departments, Library, Campus Security, Your International Office, Bookstore, Post-Office, heck even the Cafeteria!. Something must turn up and once you have that job, you should be able to get an SSN.

It's good you change your course if as you know Anthropology isn't good enough for you. Talk to your international student advisor, that shouldn't be much of a problem. My question is, why Business Administration? Why not something in the STEM field if your reason for changing majors is so you can do a course that is bankable enough? Don't get me wrong, Business Administration is a good enough course. But you will find a lot a American citizens doing the same course. Preference is gonna be given to them in a job interview. Look for something that will be make you employable at the end of your course.

I don't know what brand of Christianity they practice in Nigeria and Africa. I am a muslim, but I have been with my christian friends to church couple of times here. When the offering bowl is passed around, people aren't afraid to drop 25cents or 50cents into them. Most of the money goes to missionary work for their pastors in Asia and Africa anyways. Their pastor is not a full-time pastor, he has a day job. Yet, they paid almost $8,000 for a Nigerian guy who had monetary issues and could not pay his school fees.

Their own brand of worship is different too. Churches are sound proof, no jumping up and down. No excessive display. If one day I decided to every be a Christian, it's because I see the manifestation of true christianity here, not all the "come and see me" christianity they practice in Nigeria. Heaven help us.

But I hear it's not impossible to get a graduate school in the US. My lecturers have promised to help write good recommendations, and I will be taking the GRE soon hoping to get good scores and the IELTS too. Please I have looked into the admission requirements of most grad schools in different states at the US and generally a 3.0/4.0 is advisable. I need nairalanders to help me identify schools that it's probable to get admitted. A MSC degree in Chemical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering are my interests.(i had my undergraduate in Chemical Engineering)

Nope. Your GPA shouldn't be 2.4/4.0. If I can take a wild guess, it should be around 2.9-3.0/4.0. I will advise you to try WES out. The give the best evaluations. For schools that offer your course, check out schools in Southern America. Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and so on.

I know two people who are doing PhD in Chemistry (it think one is Organic and the other Pharmaceutical) at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. You might wanna check the school out. The give generous funding and stipend. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey also offers something like that. Go online and mail a few professors.

Feexo: Ojap, Imperiouxx, BigFrancis, Msnas and others, I have been in NY for 5 days trying to raise money for my tuition- my school has a student-friendly payment plan- and I have started making progress. Registration for fall deadline is August 31st, and I plan to go by 20th-25th, because I am still expecting some money. A Nigerian I know in the school says I would get my: state ID, student ID and SSN like a month after registration. Ultimately, I plan to defer after 1 semester- assuming I will have gotten my SSN- and defer for another semester or a year, work with my SSN, make some money and return to complete the program before proceeding to doctorate. My research professor emailed me and did encourage and sympathize with me too....
I am still banking on God... What do you guys think of my plan? Is it feasible?

Yeah, Its an okay plan. But still you have a mountain to climb. After you get your SSN you still have to look for an employer that will employ you with that kind of SSN. Cos on the SSN card for Internationals it is boldly written NOT VALID FOR WORK WITHOUT DHS APPROVAL. You might be lucky and work at a place where they only collect your SSN number and not demand for the card and do a background check, other places with ask for the card and also run a background check. Most places that will pay you salary good enough to live on and also save some part of it towards your tuition will definitely do a background check on you.

PS: If you defer your admission after a semester, you're expected to go back to Nigeria and not stay in America. Staying back might cause the school not to reinstate you back for your program because you violated the premise of your F-1 Visa. What I will suggest is, since you're a masters student, try to pay the first semester of school fees and afterwards look for a GA. Its not carved in stone that you must work as a GA in your department. You can get GAs in other department (two of my friends got GA in department not even remotely related to theirs) or look for a non academic GA on campus. Just walk all around campus and let them know you're in dire need of one. Americans love the good sob story of an African who defied all odds (for their mind ) to come to school in Africa. Once they know you may go back to Africa cos you cant pay your tuition, something might show. I really don't like the idea of deferment.

All in all, its a hard road. But I appreciate your honesty and zeal to succeed. Not many people will come out in the open like this on a forum like this and make their problems know. I know the circumstances are beyond your power and I pray you find favor in the eyes of God and man. I will keep you in my prayers.
