I believe Buhari's total 10 years in office (1983-1985, 2015 - 2023) is actually a blessing in disguise: we will be more careful with our choices for leadership. Even youths in Katsina and Kano have opened their eyes.

Living in a civilized country doesn't guarantee anything.

People are being murdered daily everywhere in the world.

Yes, abroad is better, but not immune to crimes that may lead to deaths.
OK, I'll bite: yes, you can die at any time in any country.
Now the choice is living with constant electricity and water, or living with no light and using buckets to fetch water - in 2021.

It's the quality of life - while you have it - that's make it worthwhile. After all if we're all going to die, why bother getting an education and job? Might as well just suffer till we die eh?

Na wao... BH is hoisting flags, giving out presents, and capturing hearts, minds, and territories. No security measures there.
We already know this administration is racist (yes, against the race of Igbos), but this is just more confirmation of it.

People set out to protect their homeland from marauders (including police who feed like parasites off our backs), and they are being crushed. People set out to harm citizens and take over territory, and they are being negotiated with.

What's the lesson? Igbos need to arm themselves too, so FG can negotiate. Enough pussyfooting around.
Igbo governors need to stop kissing Buhari's ass and start caring for their people, like the late Ikemba of Nnewi of everlasting blessed memory.

Thank God this evil Lock down or restriction of movement plan has been suspended for now ( I want to believe). The FG made the earlier call to "test the waters". They want to see how Nigerians will react to then determine whether to deny the statement or to forge ahead.
We really should take this stuff seriously.

In my opinion, we need a restriction, if not a lockdown, in spite of the economic hardship. India - a warm country - is experiencing a second wave crisis now because people thought they hard defeated it and relaxed too soon. The people who have died, and families that have lost members don't care about the job loss or economic hardship they would have suffered if lockdown was imposed earlier.

I should also mention they have the ability to produce vaccines and oxygen tanks, but we don't.

I'm sure I will catch hell for this comment, but hear me out:

The role of a government is to make life better for its citizens. That's why people organize governments.

Let me say here and now that I fully support Boko Haram if it will ultimately do better for the people in those regions and make them as prosperous as Libya or Egypt (though they are having their own problems). There are good examples in Saudi, Dubai, Qatar, so being a homogenous muslim country is not necessarily a bad thing. They should avoid the South sha, since we're not interested.

If Boko Haram can take better care of the people of Borno, Yobe, and other northern territories, I see no reason why the Nigerian government should keep making noise when it has failed in its fundamental duty to make life better for its people and protect its territory. Government is not by mouth, it's by action. It's not by stealing money and buying houses abroad, it's by loving your populace (and yourself) enough to educate them, empower them, listen to them, protect them, uplift them, encourage them. Skip a few fancy cars and fund pipe-borne water. Nigerian leaders brought this on themselves.

The USA, and indeed many countries, fought for their freedoms from an oppressive government and those rebels are now called "founding fathers". It all depends on who won and who is writing the history books.
Romance › Re: Why Do Some Men Ask For Sex After Taking A Girl Out On A Date? by nextstep(m): 2:44pm On May 11, 2021
Jeon:
Lollittaa come take a look.

Nigerians have nothing to offer and collect in relationship apart from money and sex
It's not just Nigerians, and it's not just sex and money. Please understand me:

1 - If a guy asks a girl out, it's because he wants to be intimate with her (as wife, as girlfriend, whatever)
2 - girls are also looking for partners to be intimate with (again as husband, boyfriend, etc), so they accept to go on dates. It's rare for a woman to agree to go on a date with someone she doesn't see potential in (or seeing as a free lunch).
3 - dates are a way of people getting to know each other - it doesn't have to involve spending any money - you can go to a park or even just stroll around.
4 - after dates, if things go well, the progression usually more dates, longer talks, texting, falling in love); the end goal is intimacy for both partners.

This used to be mediated by chaperones and societal rules of courtship (including the man asking a senior relative to talk to the girl's people).

The difference is now most people have reduced the dating experience to a shortcut to sex, and a shortcut to eat at somebody else's expense.
Romance › Re: Why Do Some Men Ask For Sex After Taking A Girl Out On A Date? by nextstep(m): 2:32pm On May 11, 2021
Psych412:
This is a very serious issue. Spending on a lady doesn't give you the right to ask her for sex. This needs to stop. Taking a girl out for a date doesn't have to be sex in return.
Please let's try to be responsible
It's not that we expect sex after the date; neither does spending give us the right to demand it.

But think about it: why would anybody take a girl out if he's not interested in her in the first place? He wants to have sex with her*, that's why he toasted her and took her out. No man wants to introduce himself to a woman just to be friends, so please take the mere act of "hello, how are you?" as an expression of intent to be intimate.

*Some people will say: "dates and sex are not the same thing"... I counter: the ultimate destination is intimacy - whether it be before or after marriage, whether it's on the first date or the tenth. Why split hairs about timing when it's the intent that's important?

He's about ushering the future: fully electric cars, human missions to mars, commercial missions to the moon, solar homes, etc.

Once you have launch capability, might as well diversify your business: have people pay for satellites in space to provide internet, which in turn funds your mars missions...

What African countries are yet to realize is that we can benefit from providing an enabling environment. Elon won't have been able to accomplish much if he had remained in South Africa.

Properties › Re: Why Renting An Apartment In Lagos Is So Expensive by nextstep(m): 7:18pm On May 09, 2021
Is this a real question? I mean, land is way more expensive in Lagos overall, compared to say, Sagamu. Building on the island can be quite difficult and expensive (for instance the amount spent on building raft foundation alone can finish a house on high, dry land where you just need strip foundation). Lagos has expensive taxes as well, which is passed on to tenants.

Anytime you have higher demand than supply - as in people are trooping into Lagos everyday - prices will rise. This one is basic economics. Landlords that don't charge more rent will find themselves paying higher taxes anyway because property prices have increased.

New houses cost way more to build than the older houses. You want to compare the price of cement 10 years ago to today? Plus labour to build it, other materials, and even fuel to carry those materials have added cost. Any given house of the same quality will cost 15% more to build every year, just based on inflation, so rent has to match. You can't spend 20M in 2021 and charge the same as somebody who built with 15M in 2017. Reducing quality a bit is one way (not that I agree) to keep the costs from spiraling out of control.

For me, we need to grow other parts of the country so people don't keep cramming into Lagos for opportunity.

Nairaland General › Re: Three Things A Feminist Should Avoid (Opinion) by nextstep(m):
Feminism, in its original intended form, is an assertion that there should not be discrimination based on gender: women should not be judged on their ability to work, earn, lead, etc. solely based on their gender.

Though there are hotly debated and valid differences, I will equate feminism, womanism, and gender equality for the purpose of this discussion.

Feminism is why we have politicians, voters, doctors, astronauts, presidents, CEOs, professors, etc. who are women. It's why women can legally inherit property, leave abusive marriages, and pursue personal happiness.

To frame your acceptance of what I'm about to say: I would call myself a feminist, womanist, and a believer in gender equality; my mother was a founding member of Women in Nigeria back in early 80s so I was steeped in the history, reason, and difficulties of feminism in the Igbo, Nigerian, African, Western, and global contexts. I am a happily married man who appreciates and encourages his strong wife to attain all that she can. I don't feel threatened, and I respect her as a partner in decision making, though I confess I've had to put my foot down as a man on the rare occasion. As a woman, she appreciates and desires me to lead as her man with all the connotations it implies, but it doesn't mean she wants to be discriminated against, ignored, abused, or denied pursuit of happiness.

I would say my understanding of feminism is more about mutual self-respect between interdependent partners who complement each other.

Ironically, there has been a long history of gender eqality in Africa - to the point that most African women were far more independent and empowered in African societies in 1700s than their European counterparts. African women provided for their families (they farmed, taught, ran markets, protested, and were a visible voice in decision making in African societies long before American women could vote).

Toks2008:
Feminism is an ideology that believes in equality of all the sexes in all aspects and strata of life ...It is about both gender having equal rights and opportunities and as long as you believe in this ideology, you are a feminist whether you are a male or female.
But Feminism transcends beyond sex equality hence there is a deeper twist to this term Feminism and it is simply about a woman having total freedom to do what she wants without any form of inhibitions... it is about a woman having total independence in all facets of life and this is the true definition of Feminism.
If a man have have total independence without any inhibitions, why can't a woman? There have been many inhibitions placed on a woman simply because she is a woman, and objectively cannot be said to be fair. Feminism is a reaction to this.

Toks2008:
1. A FEMINIST SHOULD AVOID MARRIAGE : Except there is a different form of marriage asides the one institutionalized by the creator GOD almighty then i think any feminist who goes into marriage is on a wild goose chase or should just give up the ideology.

There is no way you can be a feminist and practise the submissiveness as commanded by GOD. A feminist does what she wants and she is not obliged to obey any man. The bible and even the Quran clearly state that the Husband is the head of the wife and a wife MUST SUBMIT AND OBEY HER HUSBAND. This is a total deviation from the ideology of feminism and any feminist who is married is not a true feminist.
This of course conveniently avoids the fact that these books were written from a male point of view - I find even the concept of God being male quite odd since we're restricting an omnipresent being to needing to have a gender. It reflects more the limitations in the minds of people than the actual reality. The bible also suggests/supports a lot of things that we now consider archaic, so I wouldn't be quick to use it as a reference for what should be in today's society. But that aside, ever hear the expression: "the man may be the head, but the woman is the neck?" Can't do much without the neck and head both agreeing to turn. I view marriage in that light: it's a partnership where men too should participate in give-and-take.

Toks2008:
2. A FEMINIST MUST NEVER DEPEND ON ANY MAN FINANCIALLY: You can't be a feminist and still want a man to pay your bills...a feminist makes her own money 100% and will never at any point depend partly or totally on any man for money. After all, financial independence is a core attribute of a feminist.
No argument here... this is just a classic case of eating your cake and having it. With anything and any movement, most people will take all the positives, and not want to take on the negatives: e.g. some women complain that men are no longer chivalrous because of equality, conveniently forgetting that chivalry was strong when women couldn't own property, vote, lead societies, and if you go back far enough in Western society, didn't even posses souls.

Toks2008:
3. A FEMINIST SHOULD NEVER TURN DOWN ANY TASK OR JOB WITH AN EXCUSE THAT IT IS A MAN'S THING:
It is all about equality so there is no job designated for the men, a feminist should be able to take up any task no matter how manly it appears and any lady who believes in the feminism ideology yet shies away from certain tasks with an excuse that it is a man's thing should simply give up the ideology.
However, we can't ignore basic biology that there are some things women can't (or were not trained to, or would rather not) do; conversely, there are some things men cannot do (or are not naturally disposed to doing).

Well, the main thrust of feminism is that it gives both genders the same opportunities to choose what they want to do - in education, employment, having a voice in society. We should not ignore the inequalities that keep half the population oppressed because of a few idiosyncrasies.

Taxpayer money not her money.
What we're praising is not the size of the project... it's the thought behind it. She could easily have bought a car, or even just chopped the money, - afterall it was legally allocated to her - but she instead used it to better her community. When she becomes in charge of allocating as rep or senator, she will be one of those advocating for hospitals and schools, not for furniture or newspaper allowance. How much was spent buying Lexus jeeps at the national level two years ago?

This is the kind of leadership we're looking for: using taxpayer money for the betterment of taxpayers, not only to make life sweet for themselves. We need to celebrate and encourage these kind of leaders, because we will all benefit with more of them being elected.
