Romance / Re: What Apartment Is Best For A Newly Wedded Couple? by Nyceguy92: 4:33pm On Sep 29, 2019
Bros, your question sounds a bit redundant as few people have said. It's all in your pocket.

However, here is my take:

As a married man, you and your wife will need some privacy plus you definitely cannot do away with visitors, be they family or friends.

You need at least a bedroom and a sitting room space with separate toilet/ bath, and kitchen.

When you have kids and your mother in-law comes, you can comfortably sleep in the sitting room while she sleeps in the bedroom with your wife and baby.

One bedroom ensuite is so squashed for both of you. Do not even go there.

A 2-bedroom flat will be super comfortable but only if you have the money.

Politics / Re: FRSC Begins Test Transmission Of Its Radio Station, Unveils FRSC National Radio by Nyceguy92: 4:13am On Sep 28, 2019
I am surprised at the people who said "It is a good idea." What's good here?
Why would the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), a federal agency of government, establish a radio station?
Does that mean that other agencies can ask for and establish their radio stations.

What new message will the station pass to the masses that they have not heard already?
Unless the station is going to be received nationwide, which I doubt, how does the FRSC hope to reach the rest of the country?
It must have been easy to sway the mind of the NBC boss to grant the licence by using safety and enlightenment as excuses.

I consider good roads and adequate road signs as major factors in road safety.
In other parts of the World, the roads are good and reflective road signs are placed at strategic places.
They are present every few feet of corners, bridge rails, electric poles, stationary roadside infrastructure, etc.
Our road signs are scanty and exist miles apart if they are present.

Would it not have been enough if the agency used existing radio stations in the states to spread their gospel.
Infact, this has been the case; zonal and state officers regularly play guests of the radio stations to discuss traffic, safety, or regulatory issues.

My concern is that the radio station is not necessary. It is going to be redundant most of the time.
And I foresee it abandoned and non-operational soon.

I hope they will not ask for a TV station next time.

My candid view.
Car Talk / Re: How To Change Your Car’s Spark Plugs by Nyceguy92: 4:19am On Aug 27, 2019
Are you kidding me?
Does one call this a DIY(Do it Yourself) on how to replace the spark plugs in a car?

I might as well write on "how to change your car bad tyre" as follows: jerk car up, remove tyre, put a good tyre, end task.

I am even surprised that some people found this post, nay, repost, helpful. How so?

A good "How to Do it Yourself" write up assumes the reader knows nothing about the task
It gives a brief but detailed step-by-step way to perform the task assisted by visuals where necessary.

The author did not mention that standard practice is to kill the engine and allow it to cool,
Then remove the battery positive terminal to avoid electric shock.

Removing the older type plug cables is different from doing so to coil packs.
What about plug inspection and plug gap?

I presume this post is not for individuals who have cars that use 6 plugs because nothing was said about the 3 plugs tucked well behind the valve cover.

Often, people copy and paste write-ups about which they know nothing and they beat their chest for a wonderful contribution.
And when they do, they copy both the good and the bad; no editing to add newer info or remove irrelevant material, etc.

My opinion, the way I think/feel it.

Sports / Re: AFCON: Nigerians React After Algeria Defeated Super Eagles by Nyceguy92: 3:05am On Jul 15, 2019
Ten minutes of watching the march, I concluded that we weren't going to win.

Like somebody said, passes happen in triangles and our team didn't have them.

While Algeria was sending directed long passes up front, our players made sure everyone in the back and midfield touched the ball before going forward.

In the first half, individual players held onto the ball for too long before passing it.

When a team plays with no sense of urgency, it is bound to lose. Even after the equalizer, we should have upped the pressure and win outright. However, it appeared our team was hoping for the extra 30 minutes.
See where it got us/them.

As a child playing in the rain, yes; but as an adult, a supposedly slay whatever in the open with a bucket of water, it's insane.

Most readers here just jump to start commenting on a post without first analysing it.
If not for show and already planned, why would she be in pants and bra? Is that how to take a bath?

Can anyone seen that in the middle of the middle of the premises, instead of the spot where water run off the roof (if any), she won't get enough rain water.

The state of social media these days is like there is a competition to hunt for queer stuff and put them up just to trend.
That is why an individual will videotape an accident scene to post instead of helping the victims.

It drives me crazy and tends to desaturate my brain when going through the front page on Nairaland, all I see are posts that are heavy on words/phrases like "slay queen," "Loved up," "bikini body," A Facebook user..." "mega billionaire," etc.

Ironically, these are the ones that make frontpage and attract heavy traffic/comments.
Write an original well researched educative and informative post, only very few will look at it. It is appalling.

In the past, I suggested flagging, and eventually removing, a post that does not make sense, unethical, or is known to be false.
This is the practice everywhere and I don't know why the operators of this forum have not started doing so.

I have searched here on Nairaland, but have not seen any write up about door locks.

Please, could experts here recommend good quality door locks for me, including price ranges, pros and cons, etc.

I have done quite some research, which opened my eyes to aspects of door locks I did not know before now.
I got to know the different types, grading, and use in residential and commercial buildings.

It appears mortise locks are more popular and secure.
Deadbolts with single or double cylinders are good, too, especially for entry doors.

Pictures of recommended locks, if available, will be appreciated.

Wow, it appears this is the wrong section to put up this post.
Either there are no more builders on this forum or they don't use door locks anymore.

Where are the building materials dealers?

Exactly my thought.

Mainstream TV and radio stations are the way to go for the spoken language.
Youths of nowadays no longer read. How can they when Facebook, instagram, etc, have taken up so much of their time.

In my time - not a millennium ago, anyway - we read and passed novels around.
Even till now, I still buy books on various subject matters so I do not become a straightjacket individual.

A thought provoking post.

As most people have observed, most of the foundation was not laid in the pre-highier education years.
The university cannot teach self improvement skills, which should be picked up by oneself.

The advent of smart phones has weakened the desire to read and/or write.
Letter writing is dead. In those days, my uncles and elder ones corrected my letters; I did same for others.

Students do not read anymore. My experience has been that reading is the most important way to improve oneself.
Besides it being fun, it gives you an insight into areas that are not your primary calling and improves your conversational language.
Reported speech is one area most people make mistakes.

The best way to learn language skill and broaden one's horizon is to read much, watch and listen to TV and radio news and other programmes presented in formal English. This is where usage and pronunciation are learnt. Panel discussion programmes are very good.

Let me emphasise that by reading, I do not mean those sermons that men of God turn into glossy paper backs sold in high brow stores.
I mean classics and bestsellers that deal on various issues: society, culture, law, education, philosophy, science and technology, mythology, etc

It is doubtful that private schools do better than public schools as the problems raised by the op can only be solved by the individuals themselves. It is a personal thing.

i just got a Nigerian used 1999 crv everything was fine with it until i took it to a Honda to change to shaft, upper arm ,and shock absorbers only to realise with i put it drive it jacks(Gbi) but reverse and neutral no problem .
Then when i switch on the ignition without starting it D4 and park light is on but the D4 light goes off.People an in serious need of your help before mechanics and desires turn me to ATM thanks.

If your car was driving well before the change of parts, it is most likely your mechanic dislodged some wires or did not put in the right parts.

Regarding your car jerking forward when you engage gear, I am almost certain that your new shaft is the wrong one.
Not all parts are totally cross-compatible and unless you use the correct part, some functions will be lost.
This is especially so in Nigeria, where Tokumbo/used parts are commonly used and whether or not a part fits well is often hearsay.

I had to replace the shaft of a 2003 Camry 2.4l, V4 sometime ago.
Mechanic tried all supposedly compatible models and each time, the car jerked forward with a sound like hammer on a solid object.
There was also wheel vibration on acceleration.

Problem was solved when only 2003 model shaft was installed and there has been no problem so far.

The teeth of the inner shaft that hooks up with the transmission or gear system should be a perfect match for a smooth drive.
If there is no proper fit, that is when you get the noise/jerks.

Your D lights may also be as a result of the work process.
You need to see how they hammer the joints to remove the shocks and ball joints.
Who knows whether the jolts loosened some peripheral sensors on your transmission.

What you need to do first is to replace the shaft with an exact model/make of your car.

Your mechanic might tell you the jerking will settle; it will not.

Politics / Re: Ben Bruce Laments About The Rejection Of His Bill For Electric Cars In Nigeria by Nyceguy92: 4:11pm On May 10, 2019
It is not surprising the mixed reactions to this post.
In a classroom, you find the smart and not so smart. Nairaland represents this analogy.

Senator Ben Bruce's electric car bill is outright laughable.
He might as well introduce a bill for Nigerians to relocate to the moon.
That shows he does not have a good grip of Nigeria's basic problems and how to prioritise them.
Since he has received enough bashing already, I am discharging him quickly in his write up.

My dismay is mostly at those who defend the senator, saying the bill is a good thing.
These are people who, if and when given the opportunity to make decisions for us, will run the country to a halt.
Because they lack the capacity for logical reasoning.

Electric vehicle don't come cheap; they are delicate and need to be charged with regular electricity.
Where is the road on which the electric car will run?
If it is the road we have now, then get ready to pick up the batteries along the roads as potholes knock them off the vehicles.

No need repeating the basic problems we need to solve before electric vehicles.
Our electricity generation is a mess; boreholes have replaced public water supply, and unemployment is everywhere.
Workers are owed several months of salary, etc, etc.

Even developed countries that use electric vehicles have not banned cars that use fossil fuel.

Those who represent us at the national assemblies should endeavour to read and research the issues affecting the people they represent.
This is how it is done elsewhere. Abuja is not for them to go and relax and live big, read the papers and entertain visitors.
Not many members of the national assembly can boast of a good grasp of the political, economic, environmental, and other ramification of a bill on lives of most Nigerians.

I hope others will learn from the senator's blunder.

Health / How To Remove Coffee And Similar Stains From Teeth - It Works by Nyceguy92: 3:52am On Apr 15, 2019
I wish to share this knowledge or discovery on Nairaland on a cheap method I have used to remove coffee stain on teeth.
I doubt that anybody has tried it before.
I hope readers will find it useful.

I am lucky to be blessed with a good set of white teeth and I try to keep them so.
Recently, it suddenly occurred to me that I have just began to develop some coffee stains on the chewing, upper surface of my molars.
I attribute this to coffee because I have emptied several cans of both instant and ground coffee in the last five years.

Age, tobacco, wine, and some other substances account for the brownish stain on the teeth of most adults.
This method method will not work for stains deposited right in the substance of the enamel due mostly due to drugs given in childhood.

I have read about vinegar, baking soda , and hydrogen peroxide as remedies, but I have no experience with them.
Let's call the substance I used HHB. The decision to use it stemmed from intuition and logical reasoning.
I have used it for one week now and the result is fantastic.

Now, how to use the HHB:
Get a cotton bud or Q-tip.
Dip/wet the cotton bud in HHB and apply/dab on the stained areas.

Allow to sit for a few minutes, then brush your teeth, paying more attention to the stained areas.
You can apply it in the morning before using the toilet, shower or shaving, etc, then brush afterwards.
Do it at least three times daily.

There is no pain, irritation or bad taste in the mouth.
The only taste in the mouth is like mildly chlorinated water, similar to the taste of chlorinated tap water.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you HHB, Household Bleach.
This is a commonly used item found in every home. It is available and cheap.

If it works for you, please come back and testify.

Good luck.

Culture / Re: As A Nigerian-american, I Would Like Insight On Which Language To Learn by Nyceguy92: 3:54pm On Apr 08, 2019
It is a pity that your father does not want to teach you the Igbo language.
This may be due to a conclusion that your family, especially you, is going to spend eternity in the U.S. so no need for the language.
Or he does not know much about the language and is using your study as an excuse.

It is ironic because there are Igbo families in the diaspora who send their kids home so they can learn the language and culture of their people.
In today's World, where everyone understands English, what sets you and your children, kinsmen, etc apart and gives you some measure of privacy/secrecy is your vernacular.

Now to your question; you should learn Igbo because you have Igbo root and most of your interactions when you come home will be with people of your root. Start with the language closest to you. You can pick up Hausa and/or Yoruba along the way. In fact, virtually every Igbo person living in Lagos speaks Yoruba. My relatives lived in the North and they speak fluent Hausa. Their kids also speak Hausa and Igbo.

Igbo is a very interesting language if you know it. Many shy away from teaching you because they do not know how to do it.
When I was working in the North, I bought a book titled "Teach Yourself Hausa," which, incidentally, was written by a white man!

Central Igbo (Igbo Izugbe) is the unifying spoken and written Igbo. It will not be difficult for the Onitsha man to understand the Owerri, Nnewi, Ohafia, Afikpo, or Mgboo man.

Regarding your confusion with "achoro m" (meaning both 'I want" and "I don't want"wink, the usage is contextual.
Also the tone makes a difference. In high school in those days, we did it under the topic called Tone Marking (flat, rising, and falling).
The "achoro m" that means "I want" is soft and has flat tone markings all through.
Compare with the opposite ("I don't want), which has a rebellious, rising tone, just as saying to someone "Leave me alone!"

Make use of those who are willing to help you. Also there are Nigerian movies on YouTube with English on-screen translations you can watch.
You can actually visit your people and by the time you spend a few weeks with them, you will have learnt a lot.

I encourage you in your effort. It may not be easy but you will not regret it in the end.

Nairaland / General / What's Your Oldest Serviceable Personal Possesion? by Nyceguy92: 10:20pm On Apr 05, 2019
We all acquire personal items and throw them away because they have become old or no longer useful, etc.
But some items tend to last and last while still serving their purposes.
This may be either as a result of good handling or the item is real good stuff.

I have two personal possessions that still look like new in spite of their ages. Wait for how old they are today.
One is a brown men's leather wallet, which I bought for N500 at a time my monthly pay was about 3K+.
It needs only a change of the zipper, otherwise no problem.

The other is a brown Cortina men's belt given to me as a gift by a guy living in abroad. It actually came with suspenders.
Although I have been using the belt fairly regularly, it still looks well preserved and attracts compliments.

Now, how old are my precious items?
Do the math: I acquired both belt and wallet in 1992.
That's some 26 frigging years!
I guess they have lasted this long because of the good quality and good handling; I judge myself a careful person.
See photos.

What's your story? Do you have anything this old and still beautiful?

Education / Re: Poor Condition Of Hostels Of University Of Nigeria, UNN, Enugu Campus (Graphic) by Nyceguy92: 1:24am On Apr 04, 2019
The pic is the most disgusting eye sore I have ever seen so far.
Describing it as nauseating is an understatement knowing that these are conveniences used by university students.

The university is a mix of people with all sorts of habit. Many do not care how they use public amenities.
Back then in secondary school, we had guys who had no shame in defecating on the bathroom floor.
Or climbing the toilet instead of sitting on it.
What do you expect when these people get to the university?

Both the students and management share the blame.
There was a time when the toilets and bathrooms were new; if they had been used responsibly, things wouldn't look this nasty.
How much is a roll of toilet paper and how quickly will it finish that a student would resort to using paper in the toilet?
Good hygiene demands that, in the absence of a running tap, one fetches water elsewhere with which to flush the toilet.

I put the greater portion of the blame on the university authority.
Institutions need to set a standard not only in academics but also in the living conditions of their students.
Granted there may be cleaners, but how often and how well do they clean? Do they have adequate cleaning materials?
Most important, how regularly is water available?
Poor working condition as in very little and irregular salary is a factor.

Now what about the bathroom doors that are decaying and falling off?
Are students expected to replace them with their money?
I do not believe that universities are so strapped for cash that they allow their toilets and baths to rot away.

If there is anything I hate, it is a slimy bathroom floor and a dirty toilet.
Of course I will constipate because the poo won't come.

Sometime ago, I had to withdraw my kid from a university staff school because the toilet facility became unacceptable.
The present school has clean toilets and bathrooms with regular water supply.
Unlike in the uni, the students clean their toilets and baths, sometimes as part of a correctional action.

Family / Are Smart Phones Taking Over Our Lives? by Nyceguy92: 5:07am On Mar 05, 2019
The mobile phones, especially smart phones, are useful devices when used well.
It is commonplace nowadays to do all sorts of things on the internet, which I would like to group as communication, information, education, entertainment, etc.

However, with the easy availability and accessibility of smart phones, especially to the young ones, the explosion in the number of social media fora, and the amount of time we spend around our phones, the writer fears that smart phones have either taken over control of most peoples' lives or they will do so very soon.

I know many ordinary people who would turn around to go back home should they forget their phone at home. I use the word 'ordinary' to imply individuals whose work or business are not phone related and who could do without theirs phones for some hours.

The phone seats like a passenger in the front seat of most cars. We work the phone while driving, eating at home, lying down, even in the toilet. Accidents occur every day because somebody was on the phone while driving. I have had a guy ram my car rear because he was on the phone. A second guy cracked my rear bumper because, while engrossed with his phone, he did not notice that traffic had stopped momentarily.

Even as an adult, it takes a lot of will power to ignore the numerous alert tones from various chart groups and social media: Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. How much less the younger ones.

Smart phones have deleterious effects on those who cannot let them out of their sight. In the classroom, if the teacher does not have a phone use policy, students steal glaces here and there to check and respond to messages. There is distraction, addiction and decline in interpersonal interaction. Most people have become lazy as they invent short cuts to the full spelling of the English words in their phone messages.

The reading culture has lost out to smart phones. I doubt that a few modern boys and girls have read or heard about the the Pacesetters, Chukwuemeka Ike, Flora Nwapa, Ekwensi, and the African Writers Series. Granted more modern authors have come up who write about contemporary issues, but how many of us, for pleasure, finish a book in two weeks.

Nowadays, there is family Whatsapp chart group, office chart group, union chart group, etc. It is like an unseen force is ever pushing us to take a peep each time an alert comes in. Recently, I had to opt out of a group chart somebody included my number because it became a source of constant distraction. The ladies in the group hijacked the forum to post sissy stuff most of which I found irrelevant. I found myself having to delete some 30 to 45 messages in less than an hour every time.

The point of this post is to alert us to the possibility that if we do not take drastic measures, we may find ourselves enslaved by the smart phone. Such measures may include trimming down the the number of social media and chart groups we subscribe to. Put in place a phone use policy for ourselves and for everyone in the house. Instead of spending long hours on the phone for issues not academic or task related, one can pick up a novel, newspaper or magazine. It is not too late to start.

Culture / Re: How Children Of The Dead Share Proceed Made From Funeral Ceremonies In Igboland by Nyceguy92: 8:58pm On Nov 12, 2018
While I am aware that the Igbo people of the area called Anambra organize elaborate and colourful burial ceremonies with various traditional dance groups and receptions lasting 2-3 days, I doubt that this practice is representative of the entire Igboland, even the entire Anambra area.

The best knowledge and experience I have is that the Igbo people do not have financial gains at the back of their minds while laying the dead to rest.

However, it is recognised that a few people may want to give financial help towards offsetting funeral expenses; this is why a tray is made available briefly for that purpose.

Generally, after internment and general entertainment, sons and daughters, uncles, etc, of the deceased continue to receive condolence visitors in their respective houses, and whatever they get is theirs' to keep.

In my area, funeral expenses cannot be recouped in full; that is why we try to keep it down. And we do not match the food and drinks offered to a condolence visitor to the amount of money he gives. It is unconscionable.

Majority, including the SW, will vote against APC because it has not performed well.
There is a national anger and a feeling of disappointment against the party.

In fact, even if Atiku does not choose a VP, he will surely win.
It's like The Nation + PDP vs APC = defeat for APC. Mark my word.

I have no political leaning, but I do follow what is happening in my country.

Politics / Re: Atiku Must Pick Vice From South-West Or… – PDP Chieftain by Nyceguy92: 5:59pm On Oct 08, 2018
The most important thing is how to move Nigeria forward.
The Mr No-name PDP chieftain is greedy and has no basis for his statement.

APC as a party has failed to perform and it is time for a change, just as it is done on the soccer pitch.
Atiku/PDP will definitely win huge votes in the SW because the average educated men and women will surely vote PDP.
Only the uninformed will vote along tribal lines because of the Vice president.

The SE/SS politically have been marginalized.
They had always voted predominantly PDP regardless.

The choice of a VP from the SE, say, Mr Peter Obi, will further consolidate PDP hold on these (SE/SS) regions.
Obi is prudent and visionary. He has managed men and resources very well in the past (please watch his YouTube interviews).

What I want for Nigeria are people, no matter where they come from, who will cover our lost grounds developmentally.
Look at our roads, electricity, and water supply. They are in shambles.

The technology for regular power supply is her on Earth, not gotten from the moon.
Most African countries have better power supply than The Giant of Africa!

The era of voting for a candidate because he is my relative or we come from the same region should belong to the past.
Let's put only the good men and women in there to work for us.

Health / Re: Alcohol & Pregnancy: Any Cause For Worry If The Expectant Mother Took It Once? by Nyceguy92: 1:54pm On Oct 07, 2018

Wow! Everybody wants to say something in this kind of matter, even if it is not well-informed.

OP is worried about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, which refers to the unique features in a new-born whose mom is a chronic alcoholic. Mark the word "chronic."

There is no cause for alarm here. Even substances that are known to be harmful to the body/ baby do not produce their effects unless a certain threshold or minimum amount has accumulated in the body. This happens when the intake is on a continuous and large basis.

In fact, even a pregnant woman can safely take a glass or two of an alcoholic beverage once in a while to quench her thirst. In practice, people prefer to stay out of it as a general precautionary measure.

Honestly, I had rushed to this thread hoping to read good analytical prose instead of a list.

I had expected the OP to dissect the life of the people of the area he served, their attitude to Corp members, their food, economic/social activities.

What was a typical Corp member's day like. Ups and downs during service year. How did they wind down.

If I happen to be posted to the same area some time, what should I watch out for, etc, etc.

My approach anyway
