Romance / Re: How Much Should A Lady Worth Before Accepting A Marriage Proposal? by Nyceguy92: 5:10pm On Sep 27, 2018
[quote author=donstan18 post=71519445]

This is a redundant question.

All over the World, there is no such thing as how much a woman must be worth before she marries. It is not a factor in choosing a spouse.

Or is the OP saying that if a woman of marriage age does not have X amount of cash, she would deem herself unfit for marriage and reject marriage proposals?

You have not told us how they live that is so humbling.

Our people say that a woman has no church until she marries.
If the lady cannot marry you because of your denomination, then let her go.

Is she implying that as a family, you attend different worship places on Sunday?
She has already refused your proposal beforehand.

I bet you in future when she becomes more mature, you will no longer be available when she comes calling.

Family / Re: POF: My Marriage Is About To Be Ruined Becaus Of A Secret I Kept From My Husband by Nyceguy92: 1:43am On Sep 14, 2018
[quote author=Kiishii post=71173414]

My sister, some secrets are better kept the way they have been. This is being realistic.
I am not sure there are a few women who would voluntarily tell a prospective suitor such a problem as yours, especially when there was hope that you could be on some treatment.

There is this three-pronged yardstick that helps us to evaluate the goodness of any decision or action we take.
Philosophers call it "Obligation," "Intention," and "Consequence." I may not explain it very well, but I will try:

Your duty (Obligation) to your family/marriage is for the best outcome;to make it to remain in one piece.
In the present circumstance, you need to do all that is humanly possible to avoid disintegration.
If you cannot provide superior argument to your husband why it is not advisable to quit your job, then quit for a start.

What is the hidden purpose (Intention) when you withheld your menstrual problem from your husband only to tell him much later?
Was it to harm, deceive, defraud, etc. My guess is that you were hopeful all will be well in the end and you would be able to conceive severally.
Well, your hubby thinks your plan was to manipulate him into marrying you knowing you had a problem. You have to disprove this notion by what you do subsequently.

Decisions and actions we take have their aftermath (Consequences). Are we ready to take the consequences?
Yes, we should be able to do so if the decision/action is the best any body could have taken given the circumstances.
If you refuse to quit your job as demanded by your husband and for reasons given by him, are you ready for the consequences?

Your husband is still letting off steam; Later, he will become realistic and calm down. Go about your normal household activities, but put in your resignation paper in your office. Tell him when you have done so. Most men would be humbled by such act of submission.

Lastly, please do not involve his, or your, people by yourself as this well aggravate the situation. Besides, it is not likely that you will escape the blame. Do not mind the childish negative comments; most of them are juveniles, who happened to have access to the internet by some stroke of luck. My opinion anyway.

Health / Re: Man Rushed To Hospital With Big Nail In His Throat In Kano Looks Calm. Graphic by Nyceguy92: 3:50pm On Aug 28, 2018
ChangeIsCostant:
A man was rushed to a hospital in Kano state after allegedly attacked by a suspected thief. According to reports, the man identified as Alhaji Auwalu, was attacked by thieves who wanted to rob him and when they thought he wanted to resist, he was stabbed with a big nail in his throat before absconding.

The nail pierced his throat and left him bloodied but he survived it as he was rushed to Aminu Kano teaching hospital.

The man appeared very calm even after he was brought to the hospital for treatment.

I urge readers to please apply simple logic to what they read and see.
Believe this story if you will, but I don't.

An individual with such piercing neck wound should be bleeding with copious blood stains on his clothes from the neck down.
The depicted amount of 'coolness' by the man is hardly compatible with the severity of the purported injury.

This the most disadvantageous part of the social media: everybody has access, and anybody can put up any thrash just to trend.
This is obviously a photo-shopped picture of a patient waiting for his turn to see the doctor.

I just laughed at your idiocy right now.

I run my own very profitable business and do not need this from the government. However I am putting our information for those you might.

People like you who are mouthing off all manner of rubbish devoid of human compassion shows how much you need such FG programs as these before poverty eliminates you

Profitable business indeed! You must be a very very bad businessman.

You need to sit down and read the responses of reasonable people to your thread. Bye.

You are still repeating the same thing you said before which exposes your ignorance.

Sustainable development is ongoing side by side with this. Sustainable development is not like painting a room which is done in a day is it?

These people are mostly not government retirees so are not entitles to pensions.

Pensions are also being handled. FG does not owe. Only states do and the same FG has been bailing out these States so what exactly is your problem?

Nothing becomes all inclusive immediately. It has to begin from somewhere and this has begun and will last for 2 years and while it is ongoing, same people are being introduced to other government empowerment programs like Tradermoni, marketmoni, farmersmoni which are all collateral free loans from the FG to help petty traders, larger sized market people and middle level to top level farmers.

All is going on side by side and a littler research would have availed you of this information in order to stop you from asking ignorant questions which are so elementary to a federal government with a qualified and well experienced economic team.

You definitely sound like you are one of the people feeding fat in this exercise in misplaced priority. No wonder you are putting up this much defence.

I can imagine you, lower level worker, starry-eyed behind some cheap desk scribbling names next to some paltry N5000. Go ahead and beat your chest in deceit.

All you listed is currently ongoing but in the interim the people cannot be left to die while waiting for all you listed. That is the essence of social welfarism.

This is done in saner climes despite the availability of all you listed.

Here, most of these very poor do not own bank accounts which is why cash is preferred unlike in developed countries where social security is paid directly to their accounts.

Ever heard about sustainable development?
Are you aware of the condition of pensioners in the country?

ln those climes you referred to, every individual who is qualified is captured in a data base and they get their benefits regularly.

You may have to give us the definition of "very poor".
I can tell you that where I come from, the coverage won't be up to 1% if anything happened there at all.

This kind of programme is a flash in the pan.
When was the last time you had uninterrupted power for a mere week or had your bath under the shower with water from the public utilities?

The best way for any leader to affect the lives of his/her people is to provide the basic needs - water, food, electricity, good roads, etc.

I do not see the doling out of N5000 to each rural folk as having initiated and completed a programme. What is that amount worth?

It beats me how some people come here to take sides, bash others, and praise the exercise as if it is the best thing ever happened.

This thing is not sustainable at all; it's like going to a wedding party to eat and drink; next day, you will be hungry again.

The OP's point is on the need to allow school children to enjoy their holidays free from unnecessary academic overload. I agree.

It is not an analysis of which people are the most illiterate.

I don't know how you came by your conclusion but the Igbos are among the most educationally advanced people. Check the enrollments and results in WAEC and JAMB. Don't comment just to say something.

Nairaland / General / Lack Of Desperation Is Our Bane In Soccer by Nyceguy92: 11:25pm On Jun 26, 2018
I always get apprehensive when our senior team is playing another team.
I get the feeling that even if they are leading in the scores by a wide margin, it is not a win until the game is over.

If there is one single attitude our national team should adopt is to match desperation with desperation in their games.

Look at the match between Sweden and the defending champion, Germany.
Germany saw the humiliation in being sent home by Sweden, so they became desperate and played by wounded lions.
Of course the last few seconds free kick told the story: Germany won.

Argentina needed to win to proceed to the next round; Nigeria needed only a draw.
Argentina became desperate and they scored.
Which is more difficult: to score or to defend a scoreline?

How can one play defensively when there is still plenty of time left for play?
How much pressure can one soak up without striking back?

I have watched all the matches played so far and I can conclude that our team did not have the desperation I saw in other teams.

Properties / Re: Hello House..i Need Analysis. by Nyceguy92: 4:11am On Apr 04, 2018
I can understand the importance of the information you seek to you.
I am not a an architect or a builder, but I have relatives who are, plus I have been around building sites enough to know a few things about building a house.

Thirty thousand dollars($30,000) currently is over ten million naira or roughly three million naira per flat.

Assuming your land is not one of those that need several trips of sand/soil to fill, here are factors you need to consider:

Are you going to be present to monitor purchases or do you intend to contract it out to some high caliber site engineer, foreman, etc?
Your money will be better spent if you get your building plan and put your eye on what's going on in terms of prices and quantity/quality of materials purchased. For every locality, there is a going daily rate for brick layers, diggers, labourers, etc.

Between foundation laying, block work, lintel, roofing, and fittings/finishing, block work is a breeze; it is in the roofing and fittings/finishing that the money is. Are you going to use polystyrene parapet or regular facia; stone-coated or long span aluminum roofing sheets? Each choice has its own price.

You will need iron rods(10mm) for concrete pillars from foundation, the number and positions of which your building plan will indicate. This may be in the region of 15 or so pillars per flat. This translates to about 2 lengths ( a length of rod is about 38ft long) per pillar or 30 lengths per flat. You may need same number for lintel, either chained round or restricted to doors and window areas only.

Depending on the size of the rooms, a 2-bedroom flat may need about 3,200 blocks. Multiply this by about 100 naira per 6-inch block, if you are buying. Compute for 3 flats. There may not be much difference between buying and making your blocks, but you are sure of the solidness of your blocks if you make them. Buy if you are in a hurry.

Items you may need/asked to provide include:

Wooden pegs for foundation laying
Nails
Shovels/head pans/wheel barrows
Water/water storage tanks
Sand
Stone
Wooden planks for lintel and casting of concrete pillars
Bamboo supports for the lintel
Iron rods/quarter rods/binding wires

In a nutshell, $30000 should take you very far if well managed and especially if you already have acquired land.
You really need to research the current prices of building materials and building in general to appreciate what is involved.
Best thing is to start and see how far you can go in the first place.

My opinion. Others may have contrary views.
Culture / Re: Isi Agu - An Igbo Identity by Nyceguy92: 3:58pm On Mar 27, 2018
Your thread was original and well thought out. For once, somebody has served us something other than "slay queen," "bikini body," etc.

First off, the Igbo name for "Library" is "Oba Akwukwo", just as you have "Oba Ji" for yam barn.

Honestly, I too find it difficult to distinguish between the lion and the leopard as they look very much alike.

On the Isi Agu bearing different designs that are not the Agu animal, I think the texture of the material and sewing style have become more symbolic than merely the lion print alone.

Obviously this stems from the need to run away from monotony and infuse variety in design while still maintaining the texture. I am yet to see any design that is not elegant.

Family / Re: I'm Ready To Get Married But My Father Wants Me To Build First by Nyceguy92: 12:25am On Jan 02, 2018
When you say your family has no house in the village, how do you mean?
In which house did your parents raise all of you?

I assume that by "no house", your dad meant a modern building with rooms en-suite, that kinda thing.

There is nothing like "gradual marriage", but you can build a house gradually over time after your marriage.
Unless of course you are well loaded financially enough it will be difficult to build the kind of house your dad wants within a short time and still go ahead and marry.

In issues like this, everybody would be to become Solomon the wise man and give all sorts of advice.
In the region I come from, wise counsel would be to marry first, then build your house at your own pace.
In fact, most wives would like to build with their husbands. It gives them some kind of joy.
Marry first, then build your house.
Nairaland / General / Advice To Nairalanders And Moderators For 2018 by Nyceguy92: 8:49pm On Jan 01, 2018
I had wanted to adopt an attitude of "what is my business, after all they will do what they want to do anyway" before making this post.
Going by the type and nature of majority of posts on Nairaland in 2017, it has deteriorated immensely.
There was so much useless and irrelevant tid-bits that one wondered whether Nairaland has become a mere playground for loafers.
On virtually every occasion, I had to exit the front page as quickly as I opened it because there was little or nothing reasonable there.

I have a few words for everybody, including those whose duty it is to allow or refuse our threads/posts:

Everybody must not post something; read others if you don't have anything meaningful to post. There is no penalty for not creating a thread.
If your post does not satisfy the criteria to educate, inform, entertain, etc, please do not post.
There is no need overloading the cyberspace with trash: over a million threads, but only very few that are worthwhile.

Copy and Paste Journalism:
There is no harm in making references to other published articles but a situation where somebody just lifts up such articles verbatim onto Nairaland is a disgrace. The expectation is to edit and adopt such articles to the local environment.
A situation where one copied and pasted an article that talks about home improvement but leaves such terms as "attic", "basement", "fireplace", etc, shows one does not know what the article is saying even because these are not features of our building designs.

Dumb Threads:
Just to keep us busy, some guys create threads that ask dumb questions like " Will you marry a lady who can't cook?"
Or "Ladies, Will you Marry a Guy Who Earns 80K a Month?"
It beats me what the OP wants from readers.
But surprising, such threads get numerous responses, obviously from like minds.

Forbidden Words:
Threads that contain such words/ phrases as "slay," "cleavage," "loved up," "caption this picture," "throwback," "bikini," "...wore to Church...," etc, are a no-brainer ab initio. They only help in overloading the internet and should be discouraged.
Already, in this New Year, threads in like manner have already made it to the front page: https://www.nairaland.com/4263913/caption-photo-slay-mama-rocking.
https://www.nairaland.com/4263871/man-wrapped-same-towel-two.

Gorry Accident Scenes:
Pictures of accident scenes took up so much space last year.
Please, unless you are bringing such scenes here with enough detailed information to aid in location and identification of persons involved,
do not merely post pictures with "Accident Along Lokoja Road" and you end. We all know what accident scenes look like.

Money/Celebrity Worship:
Many threads last year idolised money and celebrities to the extent that the gullible ones begin to see themselves as failures and dream up every possible means to get rich.

Idle minds, they say, discuss people; why would somebody spend his or her time putting up pictures of some Warri businessman picking his teeth after breakfast with friends in his house, or some celebrity posing with a Mercedes G Wagon, or the cost in U.S dollars of his/her wristwatch, mostly purchased at Gucci Stores.

I am not against the recognition of hard work and achievemnts, but the manner it appears on Nairaland tends to lead people to evil pursuit.

Flag Button:
Some time in the past, I suggested the idea of a flag button whereby readers could flag threads they honestly think should not be allowed to stay could be deleted or self-delete after they have attracted a certain number of flags. That way, people will think twice before creating a thread or even making a post. This is the standard practice everywhere and I am surprised that managers of Nairaland have done nothing about it.

Moderators not Efficient:
Even Facebook and other big social media keep a fairly good track of materials on their websites and remove or block bad posts if need be before they see the light of the day. I put it to the moderators that they need to sit up and work harder. So much trash escape their watch onto the front page that should not be there, giving the impression that, that is what Nairaland is all about.

I have said it as I felt it. No one is under any obligation to take my advice or do as I say. But for me, if the status quo continues, I will quit.

[quote author=havillaplus post=63081749]

I presume you are the original author of the article.
You have spoken from the gold standard point of view and as if the dream house you talk about is always some complex edifice.

However, some people know enough about building construction to hire an experienced builder, not necessarily a contractor, they can supervise to erect their average residential house.

In my own view, one big mistake people make is to want to build as others have built because it is the vogue. They do not consider cost and functionality. Everybody is talking about stone coated roofing tiles, Polystyrene and concrete parapet. What about the cheaper and easier-to-maintain regular soffit fascia.

Some contractors want to showcase their work at the expense of the client so they make expensive estimates for expensive materials. Prospective house owners should bear this in mind.
