People say that Igbo can't be spoken without a little English but is it true? No.
Here are a few ways to eliminate English. We can try elimination words like:

But with Kama
And with Yana
Because with Makka.

Example of Igbo with English "But nsiyaa e metuukwa inhohu aka because it will fall"
Example of Igbo without English "Kama nsiyaa e metuukwa inhohu aka maka o'ma ada"

There is a connection with Igbo and Yoruba linguistically speaking because they are members of the Niger-Congo language family.
Notice how Igbo women and Yoruba women wear ornate headscarves, while Igbo wear wrappers and Yoruba tend not to.

No I'm Not from Igbo Ukwu I'm from Aro.

And Hausaland is Kebbi state, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Parts of northern kaduna, and parts of Niger state. These states are part of the theoretical "North" but are the Hausa north. There main occupation is nomadic herding and grazing animals like cattle and goats. Wild grasses grow here but no major food crops or staples. south of Abuja is the Middle belt which is one of the few regions in the north that actually produces anything "agriculturally".

Remember Hausa land contributes nothing economically to Nigeria other than granuts. 95% of Nigerias wealth cones from the East. And Nigeria does not feed itself rather it imports food. So spare us with these false claims of Hausa sustaining Nigeria. And for those of you arguing of large Hausa pops in other nations, remember Ghana has an Hausa population of 200k, and another 200k in west Africa. Niger republic is 55% Hausa meaning 5million Hausas.
PoliticsRe: Do You Agree With Bbc's Analysis Of Nigeria's Health, Wealth And Population? by odumchi: 4:43am On Apr 05, 2011
The Igbo population was always large and well. In 1700, the Igbo Kingdom of Arochukwu boasted a population of three million, more than that of even great Britain at the time. Igbos were well known craftsman, traders, merchants, hunters and etc that they spread out and settled in various trading communities.

Infact there have been accounts of Igbo merchants in Lagos before 1900. The Igbo built great towns such as Onitsha, Enugu, Igbo Ukwu, Arochukwu and Ohafia. The secret to our population growth was yam tubars. Yam was an easily harvested food article that was nutritious and could grow from almost any part of the tubar. Infact, the it is not suprising to say that the Igbo population could have reached 10 million by 1700, but then dropped due to the impending slave trade and risen again in the 1800s as new crips such as wild rice and corn came from the New World. I believe the Igbo homeland to be IMO and ABIA state.

ekt_bear:
Question for Igbos I have: How and why are there so many of you? What exactly caused it? Was there some sort of population explosion after you guys started interacting with the white man? I don't think you guys could have been the most numerous ethnic group in the 1700s or so. . . otherwise you'd have had more structures on the ground (major cities, etc.) So I'm kind of curious what happened.

Or maybe less negatively affected by the slave trade. . . ? I dunno.
PoliticsRe: Do You Agree With Bbc's Analysis Of Nigeria's Health, Wealth And Population? by odumchi: 4:30am On Apr 05, 2011
I have states my point and allknow it's the truth. Northern Nigeria cannot support a large sedentary agricultural population other than the wild grasses that grow there.

Rice is produced in the patties of the south, and rove is Nigerias sustenance. The North cannot support a large population due to limitations on cattle, land, and again Fertility. cool
And remember rice will always feed more than sorghum. And another thing is most of those Maps that you showed are geographically outdated. Desertification Is rapidly approaching the North, even though it lies on the Sahel. cool
aletheia:
Please stop ventilating your bigotry-fuelled ignorance. The problem with you is that you are deliberately ignorant and you are willfully refusing to educate yourself.

1) I live in the North. I have travelled to several northern states. And before you dismiss me as a Hausa, know that I am not.

2) Obviously you do not understand what savanna is. You keep mistaking the savanna ecosystem for some sort of desert. What sort of crops grow in the savanna regions? I hope you realize that cereals are more energy-dense than tubers and thus cereals can support a higher population. Please read up on the geography of Nigeria. Stop pontificating on your ignorance. In which part of the country are the cereals of millet and guinea corn grown? Most of the guinea corn, millet, tomatoes, groundnuts etc eaten in Nigeria, where does it come from?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3d/Nigeria_veg_1979.jpg/630px-Nigeria_veg_1979.jpg

3) Address the facts as posted by myself in the earlier post , and stop appealing to sentiment.
Again I ask you this question: how many rivers drain into the River Niger in the North? How many rivers can you count below.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/61/Nigeriamap.png/759px-Nigeriamap.png

The corollary of which is this: the hundreds of dams in the north are for what purpose? Or the extensive cotton and groundnut farming of the pre-crude oil era; was it in the Southeast that they were grown?

You are the one posting nonsense.
PoliticsRe: Do You Agree With Bbc's Analysis Of Nigeria's Health, Wealth And Population? by odumchi: 3:13am On Apr 05, 2011
This is a clearly nonsense post. My friend have you ever been to the North or the "Ugwu Hausa"?
The North Is a savannah grassland that is barren except for small shrubs. Why do you think Hausa and Fulani men wrap themselves in turban-like clothing inorder to protect themselves from the sand storms and dry wind? Also to correct you, most of the Hausa population in Niger, Republic exist directly above Katsina State Nigeria or into easten Niger.

This type of climate cannot support extensive agriculture, and agriculture leads into large populations. This climate only supports the grazing of herd animals such as goats, cows and sheep, thus making the proper population figure Igbo>Yoruba>Hausa.
aletheia:
Not true. You are confusing Niger Republic with Northern Nigeria. This is a rehash of myths that have been peddled by Southern pseudo-intellectuals that do not bear up to scrutiny. All over the world, the major population centers tend to lie in the flood plains and along the tributaries of major rivers, whether Nile, Congo, Niger, Euphrates & Tigris, Ganges or Yangtze rivers. With that in mind it should not be surprising that the NW has a high population given that it abuts the River Niger - the 3rd largest river in the world.

PoliticsRe: Do You Agree With Bbc's Analysis Of Nigeria's Health, Wealth And Population? by odumchi: 12:37am On Apr 05, 2011
I see your point. And Yoruba and Igbo are really Equal in population with a few more on either side. And yes with the Fulani issue, it seems correct.

I came about the Hausa numbers by adding the numbers of the Northern States, and subtracting some estimates of the non-Hausa population. Hausa reside mainly on the NW, with the Fulanis in the NE, but I have updated my numbers.
ekt_bear:
How did you get those #s for Hausa-Fulani? BTW, what exactly do you consider Fulani, when you say that 5 million? There are some Fulani who are herders, some who live in those small hut villages. I don't think there can be up to 5 million of them combined in Nigeria; that sort of lifestyle doesn't support large #s. Probably less than 2 million total in Nigeria of those. Or are you including urbanized Fulani guys like Sanusi Lamido Sanusi in that 5 million?

And why do you think 15 million Ijaw? That is impossible. Bayelsa is their heartland, and probably has 3 million max. Where do you get the other 12 million from? And why more Yoruba than Igbo? That I'm not sure about; it could go either way. But I think Igbo are more, personally.

You might be correct here. Let's use some common sense, the north is mostly desert and a dry savannah, how can such a barren region have a greater population than the fertile, arable south? And the true Hausa Fulani population in Nigeria is probably less than 20million. The rest are most likely conquered peoples who maintain their distinct culture but still speak the Hausa Language.

The actual true Hausa Population is around 15million with 5million Fulanis. Remember the Fulani and Hausa are different peoples who were united in 1804 by Usman Dan Fodio. So the actual population Numbers would really be (1) Yoruba 35million +-  (2) Igbo 35 million +-  (3) Hausa 23 million  (4) Ijaw 7 million (5) Fulani 3 million (6) Other 45 million

ekt_bear:
Comments:
1) Likely under 8 million Ijaw in Nigeria. 5% is a better estimate than 10%.
2) #s for the three major ethnic groups, dunno. But populationwise, proly Igbo (#1), Yoruba (#2), Hausa-Fulani (#3).
3) I'm a bit surprised that they were too lazy to get updated GDP figures for states. . . using that same 2007 Canback database that they just grabbed from Wikipedia  grin grin grin I wish they'd been less cheap and purchased updated figures. I'd really like to know how the states stack up GDP-wise.
4) Igboland literacy rates for women, phenomenal.

Overall though, seems like a fairly decent summary of naija, I think.

@ Cheik

How many nationalities exist in Nigeria? Ask yourself this question. And aren't 21% of them Igbo? Out of the supposed "Big Three" how many times has an Igbo man led since the days of Azikiwe? The barren North which produces nothing economically to the nation has dominated politics for almost the entire lifetime of "Nigeria" even though most people are Southerners and 95% of the nations wealth comes from the East. Ndigbo have been forcefully denied the presidency through a combination of  an Islamic and North-Western alliance.

I have been around Nigeria both physically and psychologically. I have analyzed the mind of the commoner, and there is a clear difference between the political ambitions of an Igbo man and an Hausa or a Yoruba ( but not all Yoruba are bad ). The Hausa and Yoruba leaders  have sickened africas ailing "Giant", and still millions stil drop votes for the very sane people that are ruining things. Igbos (the same people that are known for their educational and economic know how) have been excluded from the "Nigerian dream". But When an Igbo man is given a Chance at presidency, things must change. If not you will still be complain about no light, water, poor roads, bad schools, corruption, no work and etc.

On 2015, revolutionary change must occur in Nigeria, and I promise each of you that an Igbo man must be given a chance to lead or there must be three Nigerias.

@odumchi
How many ethnic nationalities exist in Nigeria? I believe there are over 250 ethnic nationalities and languages. If as you admit that an Igbo(Azikiwe) was once a president etc , Why then are you so hung-up about Igbo this Igbo that for president? What happens to the rest remaining ethnic nationalities who have never come close to the corridors of power? Are they not entitled or fit to become President or rule? I'll strongly suggest that you travel a little around Nigeria and perhaps you'll learn a thing or two about the country. You'll definitely benefit from a few interaction with your fellow countrymen and women. I am amazed that you'll wish for a bad or worse leader so long he or she is an Igbo. Your standards are very low indeed sad. No wonder the South East states like most other states in Nigeria, are not performing, if most political supporters base their choice solely on "tribe" shocked. I wish you luck in your parochialism.

How many democratically elected presidents have Nigeria produced in 50 years? I have not said that the Igbo shall not lead. Did I?

Why do you focus on just 'Igbo' and not Good Quality
and democraticallyelected president or leader?. Do you not believe in quality instead of ethnicity? Which do you prefer? Mediocrity or Achiever/Doer grin? Those attributes are not 'ethnic', 'tribe' or 'religion' defined or inspired. Bad leadership is as bad for your health and national psyche as bad medication.
To tell you the truth, Id rather see an Igbo president with bad results, than an Hausa or Yoruba with the same. To me "ethnicity" plays a huge role because as things are now, first and foremost I am am Igbo before a Nigerian. Since Igbos have not led the Republic of Nigeria since Azikiwe, we must lead in our own nation.
But as I have said, Nigeria must be led by an Igbo man in 2015 or else

It's  democracy not zoning or quota system let alone 'selection'. You or your candidate have to be credible and viable for the electorate to vote for you or your preferred candidate. It's not about Igbo this or that or northerner. That's the beauty of 'democracy' grin

PoliticsWhat Would You Do If You Were President? by odumchi(op): 1:29am On Apr 01, 2011
Just an idea. I'd like to hear the opinions of the common people ( even though most nairalanders aren't). What would you do if you were president?

As for myself, I'd first of all dissolve the cabinet and all officials throughout the nation and select new officials based on merit. I would formally withdraw Nigeria from the Islamic league of nations, then I'd pass new laws with the help of a new senate consisting of 3 Senatorial Leagues. Each league would have 10 senators and would would consist of members from a particular zone of Nigeria (north, west , east).

1.My policy would be: a new Fraud investigations bureau (FIB) that would conduct investigations on corrupt officials and help crack down Corruption.
2. There will be an end to feudalism in Nigeria, as in, oil drillers, inspectors, refineries, and miners would have to properly and officially compensate a community for a plot of land and 20% of the revenues must go to that particular village, town, or community.
3. Land will be redistributed and etc. I cannot go into great detail but these are the highlights of my plan which will hopefully reconstruct and stabilize Nigerias various sectors.

So please I'd like to hear what you all would do of you were president?

I don't know what you know about the igbos, but you have to understand that the above mentioned tribes are not and will never have any affiliation with the igbos.

The so-called riverine Ijaw, Ikwere, and Ogoni started speaking Igbo when the igbos started being so powerful around the 60s-70s. The period Ojukwu started agitating for Biafra. The Igbos were so powerful that Ojukwu thought he can create a Nation out of the eastern Nigeria through sectional power.

Know that a sane Ibibio man will never speak Igbo as his/her common language, an Ibibio man who've never been to Igbo land will not understand Igbo language. The Ibibios single-handedly lead to the fall of Biafra - from the fall of Port-Harcourt and Enugu, the Ibibios opened Oron and Calabar for the Nigerian Army sub-marines to penetrate and the rest was history.

If you need more on their origin, as and I will give you a low down, The Efiks are Ibibios.
I cannot believe what I'm seeing. Do you know of Arochukwu? Arochukwu is an Igbo kingdom founded in 1630 that conquered much of eastern Nigeria. Arochukwu was founded by 2 igbo and 1 Ibibios prince that spoke fluent Igbo. This shoews the mediocrity in your argument. In Arochukwu at that time, a common Igbo man would have spoken many languages namely: Igbo, Calabari, Efik, and especially Ibibio. The same Is also the case today.

In modern day Arochukwu, and all around the East, Igbo is spoken in conjunction with other languages. My relatives and I speak Igbo and also understand a bit if Efik, Calabari, and Ibibio. So do not try to bring up any BS.

And if you say the Efiks are Ibibios I want you to get your silly behind down here to the East and tell an Efik man that he's Ibibio, and you will see the result. Mcheew. Abet if you no nothing about east make you no open your mouth and yap nonsense.

i think this is your wish rather than reality.
i am yoruba and grew up in port harcourt i do not recognize this igbo spoken fluently throughout. otherwise i would be an igbo speaker(my yoruba is quite poor). it is impossible to grow up in  ibadan, enugu, kano and not understand the local language. the port harcourt i know has pidgin english as its lingua franca.some people might want port harcourt as an igbo colony but the inhabitants have a different idea. it is this kind of attitude that fuelled the abandoned property crisis in port harcourt. many of my rivers friends cannot speak their languages(kalabari, kolokuma, ogoni etc) never mind  igbo. stop this propaganda
Please do not utter such false statements. FYI I stayed in the various parts of Portharcourt recently and there was widespread Igbo. Infact Igbo was the pidgin of the area spoken by both Igbos and non-Igbos alike. Another point, isn't the governor of rivers state Amaechi? Amaechi is Igbo for who knows tomorrows. And another point is, pidgin is not the lingua Franca of the east, rather Igbo is. Ibibios, Efiks, annanhs, Calabari, Ijaw and etc speak fluent Igbo and we Igbos in exchange can understand their languages.

Pidgin is mainly the lingua Franca of the WEST particularly Lagos. This is so because many ethnic groups from all over Nigeria, reside in Lagos, so pidgin is used. Even the Hausa gold traders in PH speak some Igbo. And I am not claiming Any propaganda. I am speaking the truth for all to hear.

SS and SE is a plan to divide conquer and allocate the smallest piece of territory to Igbos. SS and SE are the same EASTERN region. Igbo is spoken fluently throughout both zones and the same for all. Once there is the slightest majority of Hausa spoken in an area, then that area will be considered Hausa, but not the same for Igbo why?
