Tjayjosh: The most difficult thing abou the christian concept of the Trinity is that there is no way to perfectly and completely understand it. The Trinity is a concept that is impossible for any human being to fully understand, let alone explain. God is infinitely greater than we are; therefore, we should not expect to be able to fully understand Him. The Bible teaches that the Father is God, that Jesus is God, and that the Holy Spirit is God. The Bible also teaches that there is only one God. Though we can understand some facts about the relationship of the different Persons of the Trinity to one another, ultimately, it is incomprehensible to the human mind. However, this does not mean the Trinity is not true or that it is not based on the teachings of the Bible. The Trinity is one God existing in three Persons. Understand that this is not in any way suggesting three Gods. Keep in mind when studying this subject that the word “Trinity” is not found in Scripture. This is a term that is used to attempt to describe the triune God—three coexistent, co- eternal Persons who make up God. Of real importance is that the concept represented by the word “Trinity” does exist in Scripture. The following is what God’s Word says about the Trinity: 1) There is one God ( Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Corinthians 8:4; Galatians 3:20; 1 Timothy 2:5). 2) The Trinity consists of three Persons ( Genesis 1:1, 26; 3:22; 11:7; Isaiah 6:8, 48:16, 61:1; Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14). In Genesis 1:1, the Hebrew plural noun "Elohim" is used. In Genesis 1:26, 3:22, 11:7 and Isaiah 6:8, the plural pronoun for “us” is used. The word "Elohim" and the pronoun “us” are plural forms, definitely referring in the Hebrew language to more than two. While this is not an explicit argument for the Trinity, it does denote the aspect of plurality in God. The Hebrew word for "God," "Elohim," definitely allows for the Trinity. In Isaiah 48:16 and 61:1, the Son is speaking while making reference to the Father and the Holy Spirit. Compare Isaiah 61:1 to Luke 4:14-19 to see that it is the Son speaking. Matthew 3:16-17 describes the event of Jesus' baptism. Seen in this passage is God the Holy Spirit descending on God the Son while God the Father proclaims His pleasure in the Son. Matthew 28:19 and 2 Corinthians 13:14 are examples of three distinct Persons in the Trinity. 3) The members of the Trinity are distinguished one from another in various passages. In the Old Testament, “LORD” is distinguished from “Lord” ( Genesis 19:24; Hosea 1:4). The LORD has a Son (Psalm 2:7, 12; Proverbs 30:2-4). The Spirit is distinguished from the “LORD” ( Numbers 27:18) and from “God” (Psalm 51:10-12). God the Son is distinguished from God the Father ( Psalm 45:6-7; Hebrews 1:8-9). In the New Testament, Jesus speaks to the Father about sending a Helper, the Holy Spirit ( John 14:16-17). This shows that Jesus did not consider Himself to be the Father or the Holy Spirit. Consider also all the other times in the Gospels where Jesus speaks to the Father. Was He speaking to Himself? No. He spoke to another Person in the Trinity—the Father. 4) Each member of the Trinity is God. The Father is God ( John 6:27; Romans 1:7; 1 Peter 1:2). The Son is God (John 1:1, 14; Romans 9:5; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:8; 1 John 5:20). The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4; 1 Corinthians 3:16). 5) There is subordination within the Trinity. Scripture shows that the Holy Spirit is subordinate to the Father and the Son, and the Son is subordinate to the Father. This is an internal relationship and does not deny the deity of any Person of the Trinity. This is simply an area which our finite minds cannot understand concerning the infinite God. Concerning the Son see Luke 22:42, John 5:36, John 20:21, and 1 John 4:14. Concerning the Holy Spirit see John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7, and especially John 16:13-14. Starting a thread about atheists and then quoting the Bible at us is a big waste of time. Why would you try and prove the Trinity to people who don't believe in god in the first place? We know the Bible is man-made and nothing more than a collection of tales and myths. If you want to have a philosophical discussion, fine, but leave the Bible out of it, otherwise I'll start putting up atheist memes. |

Christianity Etc › Re: It Can Be Hard Telling People That You're An Atheist. How To Do That!!! by onetrack(m): 9:34am On Aug 09, 2015 |
It has not been difficult for me telling people I am atheist because people who know me already know that I think in ways that are not typical. It's almost like they expect me not to be religious. And in addition I tend to attract people who are ok with unusual thought processes; people with very conventional thinking would be put off by what I say long before they know I'm atheist. At my job this is also not a problem because I work in an academic setting with some other free-thinkers.
And sometimes you meet people by chance who are kind of like you. This past week I was talking with some people at the beach (in West Africa but not Nigeria) and one of them asked me my religion. I said none and that I don't believe in god. One of them asked me what I believe in. I said 'myself'. One of them gave me the thumbs-up and said, 'that's a good response.'
The OP gives good advice. Don't belittle people or put them on the defensive. Sometimes this is difficult because by declaring yourself an atheist, you are indirectly saying that the time they spend in church or praying or fasting is all useless and that they have wasted a lot of time, which can be difficult to accept given how much religion can be a part of someone's identity. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Why There Are So Many Atheists On Nairaland And Beyond. by onetrack(m): 7:23pm On Aug 08, 2015 |
Tjayjosh: an official atheism website, no such thing exists. Atheism is not an organization with recognized officials. but they also show an alarming increase among those who once held to some form of faith. When we hear of a prominent figure in Christianity renouncing the faith he or she used to claim, we are left wondering, “Why?” Why would so many people stop believing in God when His handiwork is everywhere ( Psalm 19:1; 97:6; Romans 1:20)? Every culture on earth recognizes some form of deity, so why are so many people claiming they do not believe in any god at all? Many of us are now simply declaring outwardly what we have believed for a long time. The internet has helped. There are several reasons people may define themselves as atheists. The first is ignorance. Due to lack of correct information, a person may conclude that nothing exists beyond this universe and man’s experience of it. Since there remains a great deal we do not know, ignorance often invents ideas to fill in the blanks. This often results in either false religions or atheism. Sketchy information about God is often tainted by mythology or religious superstition to the extent that anything supernatural sounds like a fairy tale. Exposed to a mishmash of confusing claims, some people decide there is no truth to any of it and throw the baby out with the bathwater. Disillusionment is another reason some people become atheists. Due to negative experiences, such as having a prayer go unanswerd or seeing hypocritical behaviour in others, a person may conclude that God does not exist. This response is often fueled by anger or hurt. These people reason that, if God existed, He would behave in ways they could comprehend or agree with. Since He did not respond the way they wanted Him to, they conclude that He must not exist at all. They may stumble over complicated concepts such as hell, Old Testament genocide, or eternity and conclude the God of the Bible is too confusing to be real. Disillusionment propels people to find comfort in what is seen and known, rather than an invisible diety. To avoid the possibility of more disappointment, they abandon any attempt at faith and find a measure of comfort in deciding that God simply does not exist. The writer is correct but in the wrong way. The reasons he gives are actually very valid reasons to be atheist (lack of evidence, the mishmash of vague and contradictory religious texts, and failure of gods to respond to peoples' needs). True atheists would not include this group [those angry with god] in their numbers, as they recognize that to be angry with God is to acknowledge His existence. Still typing... You are correct. They are not atheists. However we can be angry at the people who use this god to control, manipulate, and poison the minds of other people. |

JMAN05: Well my God doesn't support that. His standards is not uttered by humans, even if someone twist a scripture to support his behavior, that hasn't changed Gods standards. In short, that one makes his condition worse. It is not all request for forgiveness that God admits. Those who embark on a deliberate sin, thinking that they can always ask for forgiveness is deceiving their minds. 2pet. 2:20-21 Irrelevant to Christians because all you need is faith in Jesus to be forgiven, regardless of what you do or how many times you do it. At least that is standard Protestant belief. So, if I am an atheist, I can freely kill u and ur family without any need for forgiveness. I ll do what I view as right. However, true xtianity doesn't allow for such.
No true xtian engages in immorality and views his actions as good. But many embrace atheism to satisfy there fleshly desires, in short, they become slaves to there desires. That's anything but freedom. You forget that atheists experience empathy and compassion and guilt to the same extent that believers do. But, no, we aren't slaves to some cosmic guilt by some inscrutable god. And I guarantee you that my personal life is far more disciplined than that of most Christians, not because I fear punishment but because there are a lot of things I don't really enjoy doing that many Christians consider sinful. In any case, a 'true' Christian is whatever you decide him to be. I can say that no 'true' atheist would steal. It is not that all atheists truly believe that God does not exist, no, but they want to be authority to themselves, and end up being slaves. Commit immorality non-stop, view porn, rape, etc. Lol if only you actually knew any atheists. In fact, When u guys grow up, u come to terms with reality. I am more than 40 years old. What now? |

frosbel2: 1. Mass Murder - When a Muslim commits mass murder it is equated to terrorism - When a non-Muslim commits mass murder is it is called a chance act or one off Depends on what happened. If it were a Christian or Jewish or atheist group who organized and carried out attacks based on a belief in some ideology, that would be terrorism. An individual who does it could be a terrorist depending on his or her motivations. Someone who just goes into a theater and starts shooting for no ideological reason, that is not terrorism. If they are motivated by an ideology, that would be terrorism. In some cases they are already disturbed and ideology pushes them over the edge. No doubt that in the past 30 years, Islam has been associated with terrorism to a greater extent than other religions or ideologies, and that association is justified based on the sheer number of organized attacks in the name of said religion compared with others. The attack made by Jewish extremists in Israel on Palestinians last week was characterized as terrorist even by Israel. 2. Doing Good - When a Muslim does good it is called a rare occurrence - When a non-Muslim does good it is considered to be the norm. Atheists have the same problem. Religious people (even Muslims) think that we are atheists only because we want to to bad things. 3. Abuse and insults. - When a Muslim reacts angrily to provocative comments he is called aggressive and violent - But when non-Muslims insult , mock , curse and abuse Muslims it is generally ignored and considered fair game. Can you demonstrate a clear pattern of this? I don't see it. Where is this taking place? 4. Jerusalem - When the Muslims conquered Jerusalem, they made everyone live together in some form of peace even though they had their fair share of killing. - But when the Crusaders invaded Jerusalem they killed almost everyone who disagreed with them inclining Jews, Muslims, women and and children. The Crusaders were evil people who were motivated by religious fervor. No argument from me there. |

mranswer: The Quran explicitly forbids killing. Whosoever kills a human being for Murder or Creating Mischief in the Land, it is as if he had killed the whole of Human Kind and whoso saved the life of one as if he has saved the life of all Mankind The Holy Qur'an, Chapter 5, Verse 12 It's actually Quran 5:32, and it's a bit different than what you wrote. "Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely." The problem with this is that the phrase 'corruption done in the land' is so broad and vague that Boko Haram can use this verse to attack even other Muslims by simply claiming that these other Muslims are spreading corruption in the land and may be killed. So this verse actually serves the terrorists' interests. |

Nice write-up johnydon22. I think that this (showing the absurdity of such a god) is one of the best ways to reach people who may be wondering about their own beliefs. Hard-core religionists are not going to change their minds with this post and I don't think that this is for them.
Another avenue of attack is continuing to show the errors in the so-called holy scriptures. This is actually where it is easier to attack Islam than Christianity because the Christians recognize that human hands were involved in writing the Bible, and so they can dismiss such errors while concentrating on the message. Muslims have to deal with the fact that the Quran is the direct literal word of Allah, and so any error brings down the whole structure--and there are a lot of them. Not that they don't have their own propaganda machine to counter such criticism.
Ultimately, by referring to the idea that this life is a test which is why bad things happen to good people and why god doesn't reveal himself, religionists fall into their own trap. Maybe this life is a test and god wants us to figure out that religions are man-made, and only those who figure it out get the ultimate reward (though the idea of sending religionists to hell would be a repulsive idea which any self-respecting atheist or agnostic or deist would not wish upon them).
And of course continued use of clever memes are good because there are many people who won't read more than two or three sentences and would skip right over much of what you wrote. |
