Reyginus: Lol. Do you preach in the atheists website you visit? No, I normally just observe. Occasionally theists stumble in to preach and they are given no quarter. |
obadiah777: i mean yall slacking in this knowledge thang. yall are supposed to be the beacon of knowledge and the ray of light but yet i struggle to find any atheist threads that would generate solid conversation and display the cranial dexterity of yall so i can recommend to frontpage. whats going on with yall ? is there low moral amongst the atheist community of NL ?Just as Jesus and his disciples fought a long and difficult battle against vastly superior odds, we atheists will continue to persevere against all the taunts and mockery leveled at us by the Pharisees of nairaland, until one day reason and scientific principles prevail instead of Boko Haram, money hungry pastors, and mythological beliefs. ![]() |
Reyginus: Lol. I'd like to see dem atheists debate.Atheists do debate actually on other websites, I see it frequently; however, on this site, there is no point in me preaching to the already converted, there are too many souls still in the darkness of theism (if I may borrow the metaphor) ![]() |
aManFromMars: Not denying that or trying to defend it anyway. The bolded in my OP was what really caught my attention. It just seems that all 'pagan' religions had one thing in common, an impersonal God from which all life emanated..A utopia for everyone would be a dystopia for everyone at the same time. No excitement, nothing unpredictable, no challenges. I find it funny when big-city people say "oh, the quiet, peaceful life of the village sounds ideal". In fact in these villages where life is fairly uninteresting, the inhabitants love to create their own drama, family battles, village alliances and other such mischief. People seem to want to have some excitement and a utopia, it seems, could not be a utopia if it had such. Which would make many people miserable. |
I think the following example illustrates the absurdity of how to enter 'heaven' and 'hell': A man kidnaps, molests, and kills multiple people throughout his life. On his deathbed, he accepts Jesus (or Muhammad), and therefore all his sins are forgiven and he goes straight to heaven. On the other hand, let us say that many of the people he killed did not get a chance to repent for their sins or accept Jesus and so they go to hell. So that the killer in heaven gets to watch his victims suffer in hell. Nice justice there. |
Not to bash your decent post, but Hinduism has its share of bizarre, irrational, and cruel aspects just like Christianity and Islam, like widow-burning and the caste system (which was just a way to perpetuate permanent control by the people who established the caste system) |
Non-gay atheist here. I'd like someone to explain (or list) the Sins That Make You Not A Christian. I've heard it said numerous times that gays cannot be Christian (or Muslim), however, you never hear people saying that adulterers are not Christian, liars are not Christian, etc. I'd like someone to tell me which sins Christian may commit and still be 'Christian' and which sins would put one out of Christianity. Some New Testament scriptural references would help. |
OLAADEGBU: What you did there is begging the question. You cannot just presume in an arbitrary way that God must have a creator because He creates. That isn't logical thinking, it's a logical fallacy called begging the question. You ask this question because you don't understand the nature of God. For your information, God doesn't require a cause because He always existed, He created time and thus is beyond time, He created the universe and is thus not part of the universe. Anything created must have a beginning. God was not created and thus He doesn't have a beginning. God is a Spirit and not a sequence of energetic reactions. The laws of thermodynamics does not apply to God.Oh but I am just following your lead. You and other theists are just begging the question when you assume that a theistic god must have created the universe because anything that exists must have a creator. You say that god was not created, and you do not have a single shred of evidence. Just tell me who is begging the question? OLAADEGBU: God did not come to set up a religion. He rather set up a relationship that we can have with Him. It is mankind that set up religion so as to deal with their guilt. They do this because they have a concept of what they think the gods or even God is like, and so they go about establishing their own righteousness, being ignorant of God's righteousness.Using religious quotes to say that god did not set up a religion? Haha. There is nothing Jesus said that is verifiably true in regards to a god. To me it's just like any other religion: a fraud because it asks us to believe without proof. OLAADEGBU: Why should child molestation, mass murders, lions devouring their prey in a cruel fashion or baby born with cruel handicaps be disturbing to you? Since in your worldview, you believe that the above are just a result of chemical reactions/accidents why do you then feel outraged if you truly believe in your atheistic worldview?Absolute rubbish. Do not wish upon others that which you do not wish upon yourself. It does not take a religion to understand that. Everyone should be able to understand that, religious or not. And in fact many religious people do not seem to understand that. God's wrath, if it exists, would prove to me that he has anger-management issues and needs long-term psychiatric care. ![]() |
italo: Only your opinion. As always, empirical evidence would go a long way to convincing us. ![]() |
benalvino: I have come to realize that religious section of nairaland is another tool the devil is using to sway people away from God... this section is really putting confusion in the mind of people concerning the scriptures. this is a fact i just came to realize...To the extent that Nairaland causes people to be confused about their beliefs, I say that that is a good thing. People who are unsure about their beliefs are unlikely to blow themselves up in a market or machine-gun people from another religious group. Only the 1000% true believers do that type of thing in the name of god. |
Things common to atheists and theists: Both generally believe they are more right than wrong about their beliefs. Both tend to see the world in such a way as confirms their beliefs. Obviously these are traits common to all humans. By the way, atheists lack belief in any gods; very few atheists will say that they can prove that gods do not exist. Most atheists are actually "agnostic atheists" like myself. If a theistic god exists then it certainly hasn't done anything to reveal its existence. |
OLAADEGBU: How to Become an Atheist:Hmmmmmm.....a maker that exists and can create logic must also, logically, have a maker somewhere, if we are following your logic. Where is the Maker's Maker? And so on. In addition, you fail to connect this Maker with any religion. I see this argument alot: "the world has to have a creator, therefore, Jesus is the son of god (or Muhammad is his prophet) and the Bible/Quran is the word of god." All you've done is made the case for Spinoza's god, which is hardly the god of the Bible or Quran. And lastly you don't address the problem of evil and imperfection. Do you want me to just look at just the "the atoms, the birds and the bees, the clouds and trees, the seasons, the human body, fish, flowers, fruits, feet, and even fungus" and not the child rapes, mass murder, the lions devouring their prey in a cruel fashion, the baby born with cruel handicaps?? |

CodeHouse: mscheeeew! Even Albert Einstien believed there is a GOD!Do some research into what Einstein believed. I as an atheist have no argument with what he said. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_views_of_Albert_Einstein |
keemson: This is the letter i wrote to the Non-Believers ...so, if You have a friend that doesn't beleive in any religion, try to share with them...Because they have no proof of their divine origins and because the religions have numerous moral failings, like the fact that slavery and pedophilia are perfectly legal in both religions. Give me a Quran and Bible and let me edit them; I can improve both of them drastically. Also, the reason that Islam and Christianity have many similarities is that Muhammad had Christian and Jewish friends and associates and learned about the religion from them before incorporating it into Islam. It's a cut and paste job, along with some borrowings from Zoroastrianism and pagan Arab religion. |
Lordlexy: I had once suffered a terrible itching of my scrutum that completely defiled all medication. One faithful wednesday evening in my church, towards the end of the service, an unexpected call was made for anyone who need a miracle, at first i didn't want to go because i wasn't expecting a miracle but the discomfort i was going through prompted me to step out. Just after a brief prayer that didn't take up to 5min, instantly the itching stop. I thought it was a lie. I quickly went to the rest room exermine myself, lo and behold i was thoughrouly healed with no traces of the symtoms any more. Miracle is a personal belief and faith, though i wasn't expecting but i believe i can be healed. Read your account of Jesus's healing, you will hear him say, your faith made you whole. It is a question of faith. If the amputee believes, what stops him from being restored. I have been to Pastor Christ's meeting where i practically witnessed healings. It is pathetic for anyone to demand for verification. If you are an atheist in dare need to clear your conscience, nothing stops you from going over to Christ embassy healing school to validate the fallibility or authenticity of these claims, except may be offcourse you are the lazy type who depend on hearsay. A miracle doesn't have to be spectacular to be supernatural. If you have never experience one b4, you will not accept one. I have experience one b4 and i appreciate God for it. I pray that one day you will be in a situation where you will need one to value God. Amen. Note: God wouldn't cause miracle for anyone to believe him. His Word is enough. A typical athiest will still have excuses even if an amputee get restored. I pray your situations will caused you to appreciate who God is. God help you.I'm very happy for your scrotum. It's nice to know that god is willing to scratch an itch even in the most embarrassing of places. However, this itch of yours (and your whole story) is self-reported. You could be lying (even to yourself) about the whole thing and science is useless in a matter where people can lie about their symptoms. However, I, as an atheist, give my solemn word to you that if I personally witnessed in real life (not on camera) a shirtless amputee who regrows an arm as I sit there and watch then I will believe. People who do not believe in miracles generally do not experience them, and people who do believe in miracles seem them often. This is part of the whole psychological phenomenon called 'confirmation bias'. And there is a clear correlation between the amount of education in science a person has and the disbelief in miracles. |
Logicboy03: It really gets tiring educating people who are ignorant about science especially the religious onesI have absolutely no idea what he is on about either. |
Miracles do not exist in a scientific sense. Therefore, anyone who believes that the scientific method and the laws of science are true is not going to believe in any miracles. I have never seen a miracle. Those faith healers are just clever frauds. Amateur magicians if you will. The only 'miracle' they perform is to make gullible people pull out money and place it in the collection plate. |
I'm always glad to see this. You say you are reading the Quran. Actually as an atheist I encourage people to read the holy books like the Bible and Quran; there are a lot of people who have left religion precisely because they sat down and read the holy books for themselves instead of being told what to read. I guarantee you that when you get to the 9th sura in the Quran you'll be ready to throw it in the trash can...and that sura is known to be the second to the last of all the suras in the order in which Muhammad said it, so it cancels out everything written earlier, which is basically the entire Quran. But you'll gain an understanding of why Boko Haram does what they do. Fun fact: the suras in the Quran were placed in order by length, not by chronology or subject. Which is why the topics jump around randomly. I wonder how Things Fall Apart would read if the chapters were placed in order by length?? And the Bible is brutal almost from the first chapter... |
Uyi Iredia: You do know many people in the 18th to 19th centuries lived to old age. You also know that lack of medicine and health facilities was compensated for by lesser deaths due to work and technology-related hazards eg radioactivity, vehicle accidents etc. Until I can personally evaluate the assumptions considered and the metrics used to calculate life expetancy back then relative to now I'll hold my stance that high (not higher, my mistake) life expectancy has always been before scienceThe main issue of life expectancy concerns child mortality. In earlier times, humans, if they made it to age 10, had a very reasonable chance to live to see 60. However, 50% of children (born alive) could expect to die by the age of 10. It is in the area of child survival rates that recent medical advances have seen the biggest impact. Nowadays the child mortality rate in a developed country is less than 2%. And when you factor child deaths into overall averages, it really pulls down the average life expectancy. Vaccinations and clean drinking water and sanitary food preparation techniques have been the primary reasons for the reduction in child mortality, and they are all of recent discovery. |
Rhemmymatician: Logicboy good day. To start I am not an atheist, I believe in God. I am not born-again. I wait to see his manifestation. One would even easily mistake me for an agnostic...it will be understandable.1. The Giraffes do have evolutionary ancestors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giraffidae 2. Just because they have not yet explained it does not mean that there is not a perfectly good scientific reason. It would be a huge mistake to say that just because scientists have not explained everything, god must be the cause of all things not yet explained. That has been shown to be rubbish countless times in the past. 3. Not a coincidence, since all forms of life have a common ancestor. Just like saying what a coincidence it is that a married couple's parents all live in the same town! Amazing! 4. It is not finely positioned, it is randomly positioned. This 'one degree' business, whatever that means, has no truth to it. Had the earth been a little closer or further away, life could still have evolved and taken a different direction than today. 5. No coincidence either. There are so many molecules in the environment that some are bound to help living things and some are bound to be harmful. Some of these molecules, by coincidence, are likely to be found in plants. 6. Some species have essentially one gender or three. If humans had three genders then you might be wondering why there are three instead of two and asking us to explain that amazing fact. P*nises and vaginas evolved as an adaptation to environmental pressures to maximize reproduction. ![]() PS. I cannot believe that nairaland censors the word p*nis. It's a scientific term, not a vulgarity! |
donroxy: Thank You bros,You are engaging in what is called a "Gish Gallop", which is when one person tries to overwhelm another with so many issues and questions that the opponent has a hard time sorting through everything in order to respond, leading the first person to claim victory. Pick one or two of your claims and go from there. Edited to add a link to the term "Gish Gallop" http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Gish_Gallop |
Image123: i wasn't hoping that i would have to respond to your yadayada knowing your unwillingness to think clearly. The fact remains that the wrld has been progressing in knowledge and smartness but it clearly has not made things better. It has not increased happiness, or joy or satisfaction. It has not made the average lifespan longer. It has done nothing to improve world peace or reduce crime. Sin , hate, violence, sorrow and disappointment still reigns in the lives of the people.Wrong. Health care is much better than 100 years ago, even if it hasn't reached all corners of the world. People making it to 80 years old is now the norm (and most of them still have their teeth!). Infant mortality has been drastically reduced!! The number of people exposed to the direct effects of war is now at an all-time low as a percentage of the world population, even if the news channels make it seem as though the world is engulfed in war. In other words, this decade has been the most peaceful in recorded history. Sin, happiness, and sorrow are all, unfortunately, subjective and cannot really be measured as such. And as long as there are human beings these will all exist in large amounts. |
CodeHouse: @onetrack..alrigth can you believe in spaghetti monster flying rocket or whatever genuinely enough to transport you physically to another end point? Of course not but I CAN have a faith in my GOD genuinely enough to have transport fare enough to transport me to York and thats because HE exists and as much as you wish for a spaceship to appear, it wont because you have to purchase one to have one...well guys I'll have to leave you to have a re think, hoping that soon enough you will experience GOD in your situation...me I need to write codes nowWho said anyting about a spaceship? My beautiful, merciful Flying Spaghetti Monster has occasionally provided me with money enough to be able to buy a car and fly to various places. So there's the proof! ![]() |
FILEBE: at bolded. Please...please...could you please tell us the error there? Pleaseeee. BikoHere is the math error in the Quran. Use these verses below Q. 4:11 “Allah (thus) directs you as regards your Children's (Inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females: if only daughters, two or more, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance; if only one, her share is a half. For parents, a sixth share of the inheritance to each, if the deceased left children; if no children, and the parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third; if the deceased Left brothers (or sisters) the mother has a sixth. (The distribution in all cases ('s) after the payment of legacies and debts…” Q. 4: 12 “In what your wives leave, your share is a half, if they leave no child; but if they leave a child, ye get a fourth; after payment of legacies and debts. In what ye leave, their share is a fourth, if ye leave no child; but if ye leave a child, they get an eighth; after payment of legacies and debts…” Let us presume a man dies with both his parents still alive, his wife still alive, and he has two daughters but no son. The inheritance is divided as follows: Wife 1/8 = 3/24 Daughters 2/3 = 16/24 Father 1/6 = 4/24 Mother 1/6 = 4/24 Total = 27/24 How can you distribute 27/24 of your property God needs to revisit his fractions. |
CodeHouse: @Javnian..just seeing your posts...alright bro, we are both programmers and if we can think of codes that do not exist, write algorithms just by thinking and apply it in real life environment to solve human problems, then it makes sense to think, feel and know that there is a GOD who answers prayer even when it seemed HE does not exist..I do not believe in GOD because I was brought up that way, no, but because I have a personal experience of HIM and when you guys say you want prove, is it a picture you want or what? It is very funny how you guys play with the grace of GOD..We have few true Atheists in the world (these are quantum scientist and the likes who are still trusting their own knowledge of matter until they have a divine encounter), billions of people who believe there is a CREATOR, Christians, Muslims, Hindus...etc cannot be wrong or be gullible at thesame time..those of you who call yourselves Athiests in this Forum are NOT Among those few..you guys should play another character, not AtheistSo if I genuinely have an experience with a Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Santa Claus, or if I genuinely believe in the astrological signs, does that mean they are real? Or must my experience be with your god in order for it to be considered genuine? Also, you are making an argumentum ad populum. Just because billions of people believe something doesn't mean they can't be wrong. How can there be a billion plus Christians who claim that Jesus is divine and a billion plus Muslims who claim that Jesus is not divine, and both be correct? |
Mjjordan: most atheists beliv dat satan exists, infact even worship hm directly or indirectly...bt dey fail to ask dia satan d truth of hw he came abt..wel its of no use to ask because he'l stil giv dem d lies as always!!!Satan does not exist. We humans have all the potential to be evil without any help. Frankly it's an absurd claim to say that atheists are under the influence of some invisible, incorporeal entity and expect us to believe it. I'll go ahead and claim that you are under the influence of Zeus and that you worship him whether you know it or not. |
swtdarling: it seems you have already formed your own opinion no matter what others say.then i wonder the purpose of this thread.even when i dont really believe in atheists' views,i tried to be open minded.listening to their questions...but how ll their be constructive debates when you resort in name calling-liar,fraud etc without any evidence.dont want any agressive talks, thats y i quoted adexsimply wit d hope of exchanging opinions in a mature way.Fair enough. I did not intend to insult anyone; however, how else would I state in a polite fashion that I believe that Islam and Christianity are just man-made (which would make anyone who claims to be a prophet a fraud). Demonstrating this through errors and bizarre statements in the Quran should be enough, however this topic is not currently about showing why Islam is man-made. |
damilarelr: Simple..Procreation is the prove of God. Science is a study of His handi, works: Science calls it Divine Proportion...Evolution..etc. Seven wonders showed more of His awesomeness. Need more proofs? try and couple an ant.OK, if you take a Spinozist view of such a god, well, I can accept that though I don't really believe that myself. Spinoza's god is about the only version that I cannot really argue against. But to say "the beauty of creation is proof of god, therefore the Bible/Quran is the word of god" is a giant, illogical leap. In any case Spinoza's god has no need for anything, he doesn't even care if we believe in him or not since we are essentially just one part of him...so worship is useless. |
swtdarling: QUESTIONS ATHEISTS ASKIf Allah said that then he is a liar. But, he doesn't exist. The Quran was composed by Muhammad with some help from some friends and then officially assembled 20 years or so after his death after too many different versions started appearing. Fortunately, with the help of modern-day historiography and science, we can easily observe that Muhammad was a fraud. While he may have started out as someone sincerely wanting to reform Arab society, he became corrupted by power which caused him to turn rather cruel and tyrannical in the last few years of his life. Referring to the Quran as if it is the word of some god in order to prove that this god exists is a fine example of circular logic. In any case there is a clear mathematical error in the Quran concerning inheritance. How can a god make such a mistake? |
I can't post all that often (I have a life outside of the www). But I've looked at some of the responses given by theists and it is nothing more than a mass of circular logic, threats, and appeals to emotion, plus a few insults. The techniques you propose to convince atheists are actually laughable and I'm sitting here shaking my head. Yes the world is an amazing place. I get that. But it is not proof of a temperamental, egotistical god such as what Jehovah/Allah is. |
Chrisdmeek: My friend just know dat d apex level of ur wisdom is d most ridiculous foolishness before HIM. Dnt tell him to appear before You cos HE's not beging U to believe in HIM. Or say HE should perform a miracle cos I wonder d other miracle U wish to see. U are simply ignorant of d tinx U've seen happen so U fink u've not seen any. Have ur scientists ever proved how dia discoveries came to exist? D only we see is some oda scientists coming out to prove them wrong but have u seen the World change its form (like changing 4rm spherical to oda shape?) My dear dere is only ONE GOD and ONE CREATOR. HIS name is JEHOVAH. Dnt believe HIM 2day buh I'm sure someday U'll wish U believedAnd yet you offer not a single shred of evidence for Jehovah. Science explains the rest of what you wrote. No miracle there. And if he wants me 'saved' then his all-powerful @ss just has to will it and it will come to pass, right? I'm sorry, but the Bible is just man-made literature. |
