Imagine that! When maclatunji bans someone needlessly in the islam section, it might be annoying at first but one is consoled knowing that maclatunji is a product of a jihadist brainwashing. However, in this atheist section, there would be something worse than banishment/banning; a continuous, coordinated sledgehammer bashing of ones religious beliefs. I know the pain of seeing what you hold sacred ridiculed and debunked. It is like hellfire and ten times worse than being banned. The criticism of your religion stings like stab of a devils heated pitchfork; christians will always have it at the back of their mind that they are considered foolish slaves of a tyrant god every single time they visit that section.

r/atheism is probably too strong of a medicine for religious people in Nigeria. You want to cure the patient, not kill him!

And kudos for the religious imagery...sometimes you have to use their own stories to help them understand where you are coming from.

I was actually being sarcastic in saying that God is all-loving and yet sends people to hell to burn forever. I'm an atheist and I agree with you: I do not believe in heaven or hell either.

I've some long post about how some people are wired to take one for the cause biologically, I'll link it later (though it should be stuff you already know). And emotions DO determine our actions, most of the time your purpose is determined by emotions, even if it doesn't seem that way. Another post with that explained as well, I'll link later if need be.

I'm pretty familiar with the arguments but I just don't agree with them. I do agree that much of what we do is driven by emotion, more than we could imagine (high road/low road brain systems, etc).

Probably because the soldier was saving lives while the bomber was attempting to end lives, in an immediate sense. However if the suicide bomber's actions result in some other lives in the future being saved then?? However, in a strictly individual sense, both seem illogical to me.

Self-preservation is a pure Darwinian morality you dont want to live by.

There is also logic of reciprocal values.

I also do not like the idea of a purely 'survival of the fittest' morality, however, to me, engaging in a heroic action which virtually guarantees your death is pointless. I don't mind being a hero but I'd much prefer to be a living hero than a dead one, which means I could see myself taking deadly risks to be 'heroic', but not one in which I have an overwhelming chance of dying.

That is a simple logical calculation. Either all of them die or he takes the grenade for his team that he has bonded with.

Or he could jump behind one of his friends and let his friend take the impact. Not very nice, but logical. Or the grenade isn't strong enough to kill anyone except someone who is right on top of it. A grenade attack does not have a binary outcome.

But if you aren't there to benefit from it, then what would be the point of doing that? I see what you are saying, but I can't say I really accept that as being logical only because, in my view, I do not benefit by killing myself. I am gone, out of existence.

Like ooman, I'm an atheist as well and so I see no use for this, however, according to Christian doctrine, anyone who has faith in Jesus and believes that he died for the sins of mankind is saved, regardless of what kinds of sins those are. So the homosexual, like any other sinner, who accepts Jesus will be saved.

That might be the only circumstance in which preservation your children (your DNA) would be a logical reason to do something which you know will result in your death. Every other reason is either emotional or illogical, in my opinion.

Any cause can give rise to fanaticism, no matter how pious the cause may be.

That does not make it logical. Noble, but not logical. Self preservation should be the most rational position, I would argue, unless you act to protect your children to preserve the continuity of your DNA.

I've never heard of an ex-muslim who went on jihad. But just for fun could argue that jihadists employ reason and logic to achieve their aim.. Case in point: the 9/11 attacks.

The efforts and time that went into the planning and execution of those attacks can't be simply put down to brainwashing. Those guys were highly intelligent fellows imho (pls, I hope I'm not misunderstoood, just illustrating a point here). You can't say there was no reason (kill the infidels, get cute babes in paradise) or logic. One can be religious and still think and reason in a proper manner.

I agree that crimes can be committed with some logic behind them, but the 9/11 plotters were not logical because at the end they died in a fiery crash of their own creation. How is suicide the result of logical and rational thinking?

Maybe because we believe that religion can be a very destructive force and that for many people, religion is a matter of brainwashing. We are just trying to bring in alternate viewpoints. Sometimes that requires repeated effort to get people to challenge their own deeply-held, unthinking beliefs. If more people took a step back from their own religion and looked at how other people practice (or choose not to) then maybe there would be fewer religions problems in the world.

And, yes, I can accept the title 'enemy of God'. It actually has a nice ring to it, and many great people have carried that title as well. I'm in good company.

Speaking as an atheist, I'd say that in order to receive understanding from the Holy Spirit you will have to stop thinking and just believe blindly. Just as the ancient Greeks believed they could contact their gods and the Hindus believe they can contact theirs; their gods were very real to them. People who believe in ghosts see them, people who do not believe in ghosts do not see them. It is all a product of your mind.

Go back and look through what I just posted and you will see the violence in the Quran. In any case, to you Muslims the Bible and Quran supposedly come from the same god so whatever happens in the Old Testament is the result of the god of the Quran also.

Lol, I'm not a Christian. I'm an Atheist. Anyway, The Quran is the most menacing, threatening book I've ever read. Allah/Yahweh is a cruel and violent god who deserves to be cursed every day.

You quote all these horrible passages from the Old Testament of Bible while ignoring the horrible passages found in the Quran. At least be objective. Obviously, both books are fiction. Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad were not prophets, they borrowed from existing religions and then edited them to fit their own narrative. Very simple, for anyone who really takes the time to study the origins and histories of these books.

You should warn people that this works only if they believe it. For those who do not believe, it has zero effect on you. Like religion and any other superstition.
