If god himself came to me while I was awake and not hallucinating, and demonstrated his godly powers, then I would believe. Otherwise I will remain an atheist. People claiming that God whispered to them (i.e. prophets) is not enough proof.

Wrong. The root 'a' means 'not'; it does not mean 'against'. So 'atheist' means someone who believes that God is 'not'.

The Greek root for 'against' is 'anti'. So someone who opposes god, or the idea of god, is an antitheist.

Atheist here, but I could recommend you look at the attitudes of Native Americans who kept their religious traditions and avoided Christianization to the best they could. They did not recognize a homosexual identity in the western sense; they often recognized a 'third gender' which included people whose gender identity or sexual orientation was not typical. But these individuals often served as priests because it was believed that they could access spirits of both genders in the spirit world.

In Africa, the prechristian/preislamic attitudes towards same-sex sexual activity are quite varied. However, the western concept of the homosexual identity also did not exist here. Effeminate men often took the female role and lived as a woman. There are instances of them serving as a second or third 'wife' to a man.

I am not aware of any traditional/pagan practice in which homosexuals were put to death for being homosexual. Human sacrifice did take place in a few cultures but homosexuals were not particularly targeted. Remember also that Africa prior to colonialism was very much a rural place, with most people living in small villages where everyone knows each other, and villages where everyone knows each other and which have strong social bonds generally are more tolerant of people with unusual behaviors because they know him/her personally and see him/her as a friend/fellow human being first.

Some of these are funny, some are just not very funny.

Last year on the atheism section of reddit, the atheists had a day where they(we) made fun of atheism and atheists!

I do not understand why they would continue to follow a religion whose god hates them. They would be better off throwing religion in the rubbish bin and living their lives free of superstition.

Evangelical atheism (to be more precise) has long been established to be a religion.

Some even use the broader "atheism" as with the American Court of Appeal and Supreme Court (among others) who ruled that atheism is a religion.

For tax purposes only. In the US religious organizations are exempt from paying taxes, so some atheist organizations, desiring the same tax-exempt status as religious organizations, requested to have the status of a religion. That's all. If people who have some common religious belief can form as organization that collects money and then pays no taxes, than atheists deserve the same.

I'm an atheist, so when you say the Bible is wrong on cosmology I agree with you, however, the Quran is equally wrong.

Thanks to the internet, anyone can now easily look up websites devoted to showing why both the Quran and Bible cannot make any claim to science. There are children's books which have far more specific information and presented much more clearly than anything in the Quran or Bible (and doesn't the Quran say that it is clear?? lol)

So, yeah, google it and you'll find out why atheists don't believe the 'science' of the Quran or Bible.

The issue is simply that Islam, like all religions, is man-made. The Quran reads like it was written by men; there is nothing godly about it (much like the Bible). There are many books more beautifully written than the Quran and Bible, and there are philosophers whose wisdom and depth of thought surpass anything in the Quran. (Yes I have read the Quran). In addition, the god of Abraham is clearly an evil god who does not deserve worship.

I'd like the category of 'non-religion' to be included for comparison......

Actually, hell is portrayed as hot by religions whose origins are in hot, desert climates. Hell is usually portrayed as very cold by religions whose origins were in cold climates (like nordic religion)

The internet is turning many people towards atheism, because now people with doubts can easily look up information about the contradictions, myths, and absurdities in the 'holy books'. Previously this information would have been hard to find without going to a university library in a western country. Now even someone in Maiduguri can instantly access many critiques of the Bible and Quran. Reddit seems to be particularly effective.

Don't be so quick to say that. I am living in a Muslim country and I spend a bit of time on one of their forums showing them the fallacies related to Islam. What is excellent to see is that I'm no longer the lonely atheist over there. The apostates have been showing themselves recently in larger numbers, like here on nairaland. Now every religious post is subject to challenge on that site

The world is actually much safer than at any time in history in many ways. While I'm an atheist and therefore I view masturbation as perfectly normal and natural, I'd like to see your SCRIPTURAL justification for saying that self-pleasure is forbidden or sinful in the Bible. Anything which is considered sinful for Christians must be directly and clearly stated, because to suggest that God left some things unclear would be saying that God deliberately confuses people.

We do not believe we came from monkeys. We do not say that there is no god, only that we lack a belief. Quoting the Bible and belief in the devil is useless because we do not believe the Bible is the word of god. And if a god created hell then he is evil himself.

A lot of people have seen Jesus appearing on toasted bread, Mary appearing as a water stain, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster appearing in people's boiling water when pasta is placed inside. What is your point again?

As far as I know, I was dead for billions of years before I was born, and this did not bother me. I don't see how a return to that condition will be any different.

The Quran does not say what women will get in paradise. People can only guess. However, the hadiths do say that men will get 72 transparent virgins (meaning that you can even see the marrow in their bones), and another hadith says that the virgins are 25 meters tall. In any case Muhammad said that 999 out of every 1000 people will go to hell anyway.

On the one hand it can serve as a repository, as you say, for atheist viewpoints readily accessible to questioning visitors, on the other hand it could become a bit of a circlejerk. It should be made clear that non-atheists are welcome to post, debate, and criticise, unlike the "Islam for Muslims" section.

I just did a search in r/atheism for Nigeria, and one of the posts from 4 years ago is entitled "Hundreds dead after Atheist and Agnostic gangs clash in Nigeria"

Another title says "Up to 300 feared dead as atheist herders and agnostic villagers clash in Nigeria"

It's funny and sad that when Christians and Muslims clash in Nigeria no one will be surprised, but the concept of atheists and agnostics clashing would leave people in disbelief, probably including Christians and Muslims themselves. Because fighting over an unseen skydaddy is far more logical.
