Back in the day all this made sense. The same way having a million kids made sense. Times are changing and we need to change too. The example you gave has nothing to do with culture. It was a kind gesture. People are unruly and will bring that behavior into your home. The lady that was doing my hair this weekend was just cussing under her breath the whole time because her little kids where cleaning up after her husbands brother that lives with them. Every 5 minutes or so she will whisper "bastard", "lazy fool", "idiot" under her breath so the man will not hear her. In my mind I was thinking I cannot live like this. How does she do it. Day in and day out insult this man like this then turn around and smile for him and feed him. Sorry not in my house. My home is a sanctuary. It will not turn into a court house to be judging a new case everyday. Even if I have someone coming from Nigeria and needs a place to stay I will gladly pay the rent for three months for them and that is it.

I was thinking the same thing. It is not so much the happiness but there's just this look on the faces of Nigerians back then. They looked like human beings. It's just not the same today. People have been abused and oppressed too long. It is really different now. The pictures say a lot. I like that picture. Looks like a roundabout with the Nigerian flag and those beautiful flowers. It just shows pride (another thing that I think I felt in the pictures. Pride and confidence) of the people. Kind of like walking into a nice neighborhood. You can tell an area that takes pride in home ownership by the way people keep their homes. You can see this in these pictures. It's like there is no pride in being Nigerian today. Everything is run down and people live in it like it is normal

I kind of feel you guys have encouraged this behavior in your mother. It seems you guys never tell her straight. She is your mother but there is absolutely nothing wrong with telling her what will not be tolerated. I think she was like this all her life and your dad put up with it. The kids did the same and you guys are still doing it now. It will be hard to change it in her old age. Is she by any chance the first born in her family? When she threatens to jump in a well you can tell her that you will dig a nicer deeper one for her so she can jump in style. Say with respect though LOL. My heart breaks for you. Do you feel some guilt that in your wives short time with you, you did not protect her enough? For many people when tragedy strikes we blame ourselves. I think we almost want to hurt ourselves because it makes it easier to cope and you even feel guilty when you laugh. It takes time. You have to give it time. it will get better. I don't know that there are any words that will make you feel better but try to think positive. You kind of need to get your mom out of your mind for now. That hate can kill your spirit. I remember I referred to "my kid's dad" as "my kid's dad" and I was told that it was weird by some Nigerian lady. Why can't you just call him your husband. He is also the kids dad abi. Your child should be sleeping in hisown room by now. It takes work to do it but you can have him sleeping in his own room within two weeks. I also think he is old enough to start school though I wonder how yoru wife that willnot allow him to sleep in his own bed can say he is mature enough to be in school. Having him in school will actually build his defenses againt common germs. Maybe you guys can come to some sort of compromise. he goes to daycare 3 days a week (maybe half days) so he can socialize with kids his age. and then go from there. It irritates me when something like the child sleeping in the marital bed is causing misery for someone. It is simple. Remove the child from the bed.
