Destruction of government properties is highly unnecessary in this struggle against corruption/fuel subsidy removal. This will only give more opportunity for our leaders to inflate the amount to be used in replacing the loss. Nigerians should learn how to speak out our anger/displeasure against government without helping in ruining our nation further.

I couldn't agree more.

SLS is actually a very approachable person. And he takes his time to communicate directly with people. I have read his exchanges in a googlegroup that has Mobolaji Aluko and co. That is very rare of a public servant in this clime.

I also have his mobile and we communicate from time to time and he takes his time to clarify things to anybody, irrespective of how lowly one is.

For example when Ayo Oritsejafor and co were spreading that Sanusi had re-introduced arabic inscription on our notes and people were swallowing it en masse, I confronted him directly and he said he never re-introduced arabic, that what Soludo did was to remove arabic from denominations less than 100 and he never did for 100 and above, and that is the way it still is. Worried about how this propaganda against him was spreading, I advised that, why can't CBN issue an official statement to debunk that lie, and he told me 'impossible!'(his word) that it is too glaring and petty.

If that's true, SLS is a remarkable man indeed.

true, scammers also scam their fellow nigerians, but they really seem to have hit the jackpot with non-black women.

I see your point, because the reported figures speak for themselves.
What we DO know is that more 'white' women (or their families) have reported the scamming.
For the moment.

What we can't know is how many women world-wide are taken in by these scammers.
And in any case, does anyone here really think the idea of Nigerian students preying on elderly women attractive or justifiable?

First off, do you fools read posts before replying, or you just skim through it before firing your insults. I said the scammers are scum. Oyinbo man is the biggest fraudster ever. He scams people with "fine print". You are talking about massive protests. Who cares? What did they achieve? It's still business as usual. Give me the name of a Wall Street top management executive who worked for Bank of America, Barclays Capital, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, UBS, AIG or Wells Fargo and went to jail for trigerring the mortgage crisis and gambling on risky derivatives. NONE OF THE BIG BOYS WENT TO JAIL.

Stop your racist comments, please!
Anyone who believes whites are the biggest scammers is fooling themselves bigtime.
It's a question of opportunity, not race.
As for the bankers, the last chapter isn't written yet.

And you didn't answer my point about scammers not targeting whites but rather anything that moves.

While I believe in divine healing, this is pure madness.

Forbidding medication is precisely why these fanatics malign the name of Christ.

Some of the HIV infected people are unrepentant homosexuals still living with their partners, others are deceived people who should know better , that the raw material for all medicine was made by God for our benefit.

Most likely the power of God is not present in such churches because they are shams and scam outfits to begin with.

To suggest otherwise is suicidal.

If your faith can carry you through good, but please do not endanger the lives of others.

6 people have died so far because of T.B Joshua's church in the UK for this particular incident.

Poor old OLAADEGBU.
It must be sad to have your lies shown up in public.
Your posted article nowhere says what you claimed.
Read it again.

It simply asserts there are x number of manuscripts.
It doesn't even mention the oldest manuscript is not of the entire text, but rather is a fragment of a verse, nothing more.
Rather than admit it, you insult me.

OLAADEGBU:

, and if a scientist tells me that carbon dating puts the age of fossils at millions of years then to me that method is dodgy.  Is their data derived from empirical evidence or is it based on their presupposition on origin science of million or billion of years, do all scientists accept the carbon dating method as reliable?  I thought they said that carbon dating can only determine dates if it is about 50,000 years after which their will be no carbon left, how come they still arrive at millions of years dating?  Could this not be based on their assumptions.

It is my view that biblical creation is supported by real science.

Your ignorance is amazing, OLAADEGBU.
Do you really not know how dating is done?
Why not go to wiki and find out!
Religion / Re: Science Confirms The Bible by PA1982(f): 9:17pm On Sep 19, 2011
Well, OLAADEGBU , I'll make it easy for you.
Here's the complete text of your link.
Show us where it states where those copies come from and when they were made.

The Manuscripts

There is more evidence for the Bible’s authenticity than for any literature of antiquity. Textual analysis begins with historical investigation, beginning with the latest documents and working backward. As evidence develops, the data is evaluated against other sources. The record is then checked for consistency of information, and the claims are analyzed as if it were a legal case, looking for credible testimony with cross-examination. There is an enormous amount of evidence for authenticity of the biblical manuscripts.

The New Testament was written in first century A.D. There are some 20,000 manuscripts in existence. The earliest textual evidence we have was copied 100 years after the original. In contrast:

Caesar’s Gallic Wars was written in the first century B.C. There are only 10 manuscripts in existence. The earliest textual evidence we have was copied 1,000 years after the original.
Aristotle’s Poetics was written in the fourth century B.C. There are only 5 manuscripts in existence. The earliest textual evidence we have was copied 1,400 years after the original.

There are many more writings of the Church Fathers quoting sections of Scripture; we could reconstruct the entire New Testament from their writings alone. There were millions of man-hours spent in cross-checking the manuscripts. There remains only 1 percent of all New Testament words about which questions still exist; no questionable passage contradicts any Bible teaching.

The Old Testament has been more accurately transmitted to us than any other ancient writing of comparable age. The textual evidence is greater for both the Old and New Testaments than any other historically reliable ancient document. The ancient scribes were very meticulous. There were only 1,200 variant readings in A.D. 500.

The Masorites produced an official text in A.D. 500. There are other versions that confirm the accuracy of the Masoritic Text.

Samaritan Pentateuch: 400 B.C.
Septuagint Greek: 280 B.C.
Dead Sea Scrolls: 0 A.D.
Latin Vulgate: 400 A.D.

The quotations from pre-Christian writing confirm the text. The New Testament accepts the Old Testament as authentic, confirming the traditional authors, quoting from at least 320 different passages, and confirming the supernatural events cited in the Old Testament.

It is all unsourced assertion. Nowhere is it stated where those 20,00 manuscripts come from.
And that earliest manuscript mentioned- is it a complete copy of the NT or just a fragment of a verse?

God who created the cosmos by His Power set all the natural laws into motion and left us to discover how they work.

Ah. Now you admit there are natural laws.
That's a good first step!

Religion / Re: Science Confirms The Bible by PA1982(f): 11:49am On Sep 18, 2011
Still waiting for a reply about those 20,000 copies of the NT autograph.
I can wait.

We've come a long way from the premise of the OP.
Now it's being argued as to whether a belief in the literal meaning of the KJV version of the bible is required for salvation.
OK.
OLAADEGBU:

, God used historical narrations which should be taken literally. Poetic passages in Scriptures should be taken as such, prophetic sections should not be confused with historic narrations. Figures of speech in the Bible should not be taken in a literal way. When the language of appearance is used we should take it as such. When we read sunset and sunrise today and we read it in context we will go away with the proper understanding of the import of the message and not think the author is advancing an astronomical model, doing so is to commit the fallacy of pulling the text out of context.

If that is the case, OLAADEGBU, you're really saying you yourself pick and choose what to believe literally and what to believe figuratively.
Naturally, everyone else has that same right, even if they don't co-incide with your view.
Wasn't this the premise of the Reformation- that each individual choose their own meaning to the bible, rather than have it interprested to them by others?

You still don't get it.

And I'm betting you've never read a word Nigeria's only Nobel laureate has written.

globexl:

, Actually, the idea of the first cause is the basis of most of the worlds religions. It is something that we have been trying to distance ourselves from and is not something that we should be embracing all over gain. Once you accept a first cause, then naturally you assign a personality to it, a name, human emotions, then a tale follows and its DEJA VU all over again.SinceThe first cause or prime mover is arrived at by virtue of intuitive and philosophical comtemplation, it cannot form the basis of any universal theory on the origin of the universe. We've been there and we've done that ,and still ,have not asnwered the even biger question of "what could have caused the first cause?"
Yes, its good to let our imaginations roam free and concieve of all manners of possibilities. I prefer to arrive at the answers by means of scientific deductions, not because it is the only path, but because it is the most trusted and safer means.
My athiestic worldview is therefore justified.

Beautifully written and worth reading.

^ Its unfathomable how you seek to constrict discussions. It appears that you do this when you cannot fathom a proper response. This thread is about the reasons proffered by an eminent professor for his (supposed and alleged) atheism. There is nothing in my comments outside that very specific scope.

Secondly, discussions evolve.

Wrong again.
Since when are you the judge of what is a proper response?
You don't want to stay on topic? No problem. Start a thread on the subject that interests you, rather than piggy-backing others!

The thread is about the commentary of the journalist.
Or have you forgotten the OP already?

Remember the posers?

That I was taken aback by his response was to say the least. How on earth could Professor Soyinka give such an absymally poor answer? However, since Professor Soyinka has stirred the hornets’ nest, I will like him to answer the following questions: Who is responsible for the phenomenon of sleeping and wakefulness? What about the mystery of day and night; who is in control?

As simple as this may sound, can the Professor explain the process of hair growth on his head? Who created him or even if he is a believer in the evolution school of thought, who created that creature that he evolved from? Who created all the wonderful things we see around us - the mountains, valleys, oceans seas etc. What about the phenomenon of birth and death?

The journalist wanted to confound the Nobel laureate by asking him to
explain the process of hair growth on his head
along with the other things the journalist doesn't understand.

By the way-
have YOU read any of Soyinka's works?
