But Fashola is a lawyer can't he find some of the best lawyers in the country to find a loophole in the constitution because i know the guys who drafted that part of the constitution were probably not the brightest for coming up with something like that. This is what lawyers do, they find a way around the rules or come up with something creative to beat the rules. I mean where there is a will there is a way.

For example, he can get a couple of private investors preferably from overseas (maybe the US or Dubai)  to build a power plant in Benin republic to provide Lagos with electricity. This should work afterall Benin republic is a sovereign nation and the nigerian courts have no jurisdiction on the country. Trust me there has to be  ton of ways to get past that part of the constitution.

If all else fails and he can't find a way around that stipulation then can't he seriously lobby the president or use his contacts like Tinubu to encourage the house to overturn something this foolish. And if that still doesn't work, then he can go on public crusade in front of the media explaining this problem so that congress would be pressured to overturn the law. We can't have socialized power generation.

Now i know why NEPA doesn't work, you have this large inefficient structure and an overbloated bureaucracy trying to administer it.
Nice thinking! I always wonder why they can't really push hard to change that law.
I was reading an article where the Delta state Governor referred to plans for power generation from Delta State alone of 2500MW of electricity over the next 4 years.
According to what he said, funds were not a problem as, the state as well as willing investors are financially capable 2 handle it.
However, he referred to the success of the project being hinged on the FG's willingness to allow the state utilize the generated power for Delta state and sell the excess capacity to others. Problem is, the constitution doesn't allow!

Thanks for your post and assessment.

Seeing is believing they say. Having said that, I suppose you will soon be uploading photos of your trip to this thread so that those who have not seen the "wonders" of Adams Oshiomole before now can also become believers just like yourself. Afterall, it is only fair for them to see the changes you talked about just like the way you saw it changed your mind,
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are far too correct!

Why would you value Nairaland at just 20 million! That's disrespctful/
Even very unreliable sources values nairaland at much more.

Even cubestats values Nairaland at much more!

PoliticsRe: Bayelsa Development (pictures) by PapaBrowne(m): 12:07am On Jun 23, 2009
So true brother! It's the simple reason why you haven't heard a good governor like Fashola talk about Power generation!
It makes investment in power so unattractive. Unbundle that part of the constitution and the electricity problem is solved.

NIGERIANS!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?! WHY DO WE ALWAYS CONFUSE NICE BUILDINGS WITH DEVELOPMENT. GEEZ.

Development happens when the overall standard living of the common man improves. IInstead of throwing money at building houses why not just throw all the money at giving the people of Bayelsa 24/7 electricity. A  lot of Nigerians don't know that lack of electricity hampers commerce. That if we have constant electricity, it would kick start industrialization and tons of foreign investors would flood the country causing unemployment to plummet drastically. Instead, the governor is busy building houses. Who is going to live there. Electricity generation SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM FOR BAYELSA. Nigeria emitted so much gas flares from rigs that is enough to power up half of Africa and yet it cannot solve a simple electricity problem. Na wa o. Now i know why they say that Africans have the lowest IQ of every other race.
Because the Nigerian constitution makes your request impossible.
The constitution demands that, If any state government generates electricity, it has to pump it into the national grid, which would eventually be shared btw all the states from zamfara to abia! The constitution is the hindrance to the nations growth.
PoliticsRe: Lamido Sanusi: If Audit Reveals Some Bank Executive Have Been Cooking Their Book by PapaBrowne(m): 11:27pm On Jun 22, 2009
Hmmmm! I have my fears!
Mikeansy has made a very valid point.

The CBN Governor has a duty to protect the banking system.
Being tough is OK, but talking tough on the pages of the media is not a good sign at all.
They haven't done the audit and he is speaking like he already knows the results. I fear the outcome.
I already feel like pulling my funds out of the system.

The banking system currently is filled with cooked up figures- True! But I bet you, cooked up figures are much better than having a system where there is low public confidence.

Sincerely, there's got to be some crude agenda.
I'm not a fan of ethnic profiling and I don't usually like commenting on ethnic issues, but I must say this one:
The North lost out drastically in the Banking sector and it wants badly to get back in. Of the 24 banks in the country, only one is owned by, or headed by a northerner. And that one is Unity bank- the smallest and least successful bank in the country.

When he opens up the banks to foreign ownership, Arab money moves in to take over majority of the banks!
It sounds very stupid, but I had to add that, cos I know its a fact and that's the agenda!

After Lagos and Abuja, the Niger Delta is looking like the next most developed region in the country.
There are pictures of Warri on Nairaland, pictures of Calabar and now pictures of Bayelsa. . . . all looking really nice.
I don't know any other part of Nigeria that can boast of any pictures this nice.
Why is the media giving the impression that the region is so underdeveloped??

I know your maps and the fact that they are originally yours.  My only grouse is the "b***" word u used on Gamine. Not cool.
xcept maybe u refered to the pirating company.

Cos this one is waaaaay cooler than those Garmin Navi-systems.

Right on point.

Copyright doesn't prevent others from creating innovations similar to yours.
If your company was able to map as many as 160 cities  and 30,000 POIs, what makes you feel that the company that produced that map cannot do the same.
Your copyright case would be a hard one especially as the producing company is not domiciled in Nigeria.

Interesting read. The style of writing is very striking. Exposes Obama's deep seated intelligence. Never read a book that is majorly conversational and yet so engaging.
My best part of the book is at the end of part 2: Pages 291 - 295! I luv the rendering of that scenario.
WebmastersRe: Become A Website Traffic Consultant by PapaBrowne(m): 1:02pm On Jun 19, 2009
goldland:
One thing I have found out among majority of Nigerians is that they are always looking for an already made business model to copy or latch on. Without realizing that creative thinking itself is even a business model of its own. The idea I want to suggest here is a very lucrative one for those who have an eye for creativity and innovation. The idea is this: become a website traffic consultant. You see, as the level of internet knowledge is exploding in the country many companies and individuals are taking their businesses online through websites. But what I have discovered is that majority of them and even their web designers don’t any idea on how to bring people to those websites.  As a website traffic consultant, all you need is to upgrade your knowledge about many of the ways to attract targeted traffic to a website, then package a proposal to several companies, telling them convincingly that without targeted traffic, their sites will be as silent as a grave yard. You stress the need for them to see reasons with you. You identify that need for them and position yourself as an expert. The amount you will charge depends on a combination of some factors.
I am a fan of creative thinking. And this is an example! Nice one!

While I don't totally disagree with the post, It is important you know that everything you presently know was taught to you by someone.
Whats important is how you advance the information you are given.
I do think that the kind of education we have in Africa doesn't enhance learning.
I also think our academicians are one of those responsible for our problems as they've failed to use their knowledge to create opportunities!

See nairalanders writing rubbish about someone that is been persecuted because he tried to fix Abuja.
I pity for Nigeria!
El Rufai is a man of intelligence and he brought Abuja some glory.

I thought they were fighting for the people or are they fighting for their pockets?

It's safe to say the people of Niger Delta are grass trampled in a fight between greedy obese elephants.
Whether for their pockets or for the people, the fact is there is an oppression and that oppression and deprivation must end wshether by fighting for the people or for their pockets, the important thing is they have are fighting a cause.

mikeansy:
Nelson Mandela was not raping girls and kidnapping kids

Its unfair to compare Mandela to the thugs we have in Nigeria
MEND has never been known to rape girls or kidnap kids. MEND is domiciled in Delta state and there has almost never been a record of kidnapping or raping in Delta State. The kidnapping of kids is done by criminal gangs in Rivers and a few other states where MEND has no jurisdiction.

the thing is when they don't find you, they blow up your villages as a form of consolation.

MEND took the wrong initial approach and it's sad to say this philosophical argument has come way too late. You are now terrorists to the international community that would have had sympathy for your cause.
Who told you the militants care one inch about the villages. They've made more than enough money and moved into the cities.
Asides the villages have long been destroyed by those fires from gas flaring by the multinationals.

However on the issue of the day, I think the preaching by MEND is a sign of accepting defeat. They have been beaten badly in the latest Military onslaught. I also do not think MEND has any moral grounds to advice anybody on morality. They have kidnapped little kids and raped girls . . .they have done all sorts living in affluence while the people they claim to fight for live in poverty.
Mikeansy, if you know a bit of psychology, you'd read the letter more carefully and understand that the battle has entered a new phase!
That letter doesn't signify any form of defeat, it actually connotes a shift toward a more ideological stand as against the aimless kidnapping that was previously followed.
Any battle with a strong ideological leaning is usually a more dangerous one.

PoliticsRe: Why Are Nigerians Happy That Mend Is Destroying The Country? This Baffles Me! by PapaBrowne(m): 6:49pm On Jun 07, 2009
The reason is simple!
Nigerians are tired of Nigeria as is. They are tired of self serving politicians and Northern Oligarchs.
Anything that would change the status quo is welcome.
MEND is changing the status quo. They are proving that while the government oppresses the people, they can assist the people in oppressing the government!
Without question, the reason a MEND exists in the first place is because the federal government has failed on all fronts, be it security, justice, economics, management or whatever. The FG has failed. So MEND is a reaction to Government's failure.

If you consider these two facts: 1) Warri had a long crises period that stunted it's growth and 2)The only places in Nigeria that have witnessed significant change since '95 are Abuja and the Lekki axis of Lagos. Consider these and you'd realise Warri has changed big since '95.

Warri has little or no highrise buildings. This is a fact.
Warri is small when compared to Lagos. But we must not that Lagos is a city-state.
Warri happens to be the commercial nerve centre of Delta state.

One thing that will never change is the attitude of the people. The ever-evolving pidgin english. the langua of d people.
People from every part of Nigeria live in Warri.

Abi, I lie?
Yeah, Warri doesn't have any highrise buildings just like every other part of Nigeria.
Lagos has very few of what we can call highrise buildings. Those 6 - 8 storey buildings ain't really no highrises.
Asides, Lagos is at least 15 times the size of Warri population wise.

Truly, the attitude of the people is something else. Every word they speak is either a comedic performance or an art form!
