PoliticsRe: I Will Use A Contractionary Monetary Policy To Fight Inflation - Peter Obi by PJ123: 11:18pm On Sep 05, 2022
DesignMaestro:
It is true this man just speaks to impress his audience. How can you be speaking and be contradicting yourself?

1. You said you will adopt contractionary monetary policy thereby reducing money in circulation. This policy is adopted in an economy whereby inflation is caused by too much money in circulation. Example, increase in the purchasing power of the masses which leads to increase in demand and consequent increase in price of goods and services. It is a policy which is adopted in a period of economic prosperity (when people earn more money) in order to curb inflation.

In our own case here, Nigeria is not producing enough for its consumption and people's purchasing power is low. The major cause of the current inflation is high cost of production/importation not a rise in demand.

The obvious thing for a reasonable government is to encourage local production. Fix power issue, fix secury challenges and improve infrastructure; also make fund available for local farmers and SME's.

2. He stated that SME' s will be encouraged. How do you encourage them other than making fund easily accessible to them? With your contractionary monetary policy whereby interest rate is increased and lending is made more difficult, how do you encourage the survival of SME's?

You made my day!!!
What an intelligent contribution!!! Unfortunately, Nigerians are too daft to know that the man did not communicate sense!!!
He's a mere orator!!!

You retained your best graduating students years back only to be paying your first class graduates 105-120k when their counterparts in other firms are earning 400k+ and their mates abroad are earning £2800 monthly.

The resignation just started!

From Independence till now, we've produced over 80k medical doctors. Presently, we have about 12,500 (9k in federal hospital and 3k in state and private). The rate of adverts for nurses and doctors in Nigeria has increased- none wants to work but rather on their way to UK. By the time it dawns on government, young doctors here will be treating ailments older than them.

PROFS and PhD are not easily replaceable since there is a little to no number of profs or Dr. that aren't in the academic sector already.

Can you send your kids to public primary or secondary school? You would rather send them to private school and pay huge amount just because Government failed in funding public schools.

We shall see!

He who sleeps with an itching bumbum must surely wake up with a smelling finger.
Stop this trash!!!
Throughout the world, academics is never as lucrative as industry.
Nigeria is sick, top guys in the industry are leaving the country not because of salaries but of the poor condition of the country. What we need now is not salaries increase, sound infrastructure and security. Sound but free primary and secondary education.
Vocational schools should be rehabilitated as most people in Universities have no business to be there.
University should be funded by all stakeholders in the sector; students should pay true actual cost of university education, each university should decide what she can can pay each lecturer based on several parameters such as capacity of the Lecturers to bring in grants, and location of the university. Government should provide transparent scholarships for extremely brilliant guys but from poor families.
If you're not brilliant but still interested in university education, interest free loan should be available.

The freedom you have in Nigeria Universities, believe me you cannot get it elsewhere.

In western world, close to 50 percents of your income is taken as tax. These guys just want to be rich as politicians. It's simple, resign and contest and see how it be.

Unfortunately, non of the first- class graduate in my set stayed behind.
If you're very sincere, more than 98% of top students in every set don't stay behind.
Academics throughout the world are not as attractive as industry and Nigeria cannot be exception.
Most of the top guys work multinationals like Big4, and sound investment banking.
Majority of Nigerian lecturers with the exception of medical guys are not employable outside Nigeria and even outside academics in Nigeria.
Majority of people who became lecturers couldn't compete outside for top jobs largely due to grades or due to age for the very few good ones.

It's easier for a donkey to pass through a thread than for a Nigerian lecturer to resign. It's like Tinubu stepping down from the presidential race or Buhari stepping down from Aso rock during his first tenure.
The truth is majority cannot resign on the basis of capacity except the medical doctors. How many Nigerian lecturers as of today can be employed outside Nigeria. The percentage is extremely low.
Also, another fact is that academic freedom you enjoy in Nigeria Universities, cannot be enjoyed anywhere else.

There won't be need for back-and-forth, but just know that Nigeria lecturers are the least paid in Africa, and by extension, to the world.
Also note that Nigerian primary and secondary school teachers are the least paid in Africa. Medical doctors are the least compared to SA and other sane societies.
So University lecturers are not the only least paid people in Nigeria. They should stop this noise and get back to work.
They keep comparing with other countries without comparing the school fees paid else where and the cost of living.

How many Professors in SA or Europe has two houses and the retirement age is 65. I don't know of anyone but they have relatively decent economy which is all what we need. I don't know of any Nigerian Professors with less than two houses and they will retire at 70 despite the high unemployment among the youth. Wicked People!!!

Unfortunately, salaries are fixed in Nigeria arbitrarily, without recourse to those indices you listed. No true federalism, hence difficult to separate salaries of state and federal universities. The current salary was also negotiated and signed in 2009 for public universities. It is just the minimum that can be paid.
That's explain why more 70% of Professors (especially in non medical fields or non-science fields) in Nigeria are redundant and either become a pastor or engrossed in administrative positions or social function because their salaries are not tied to those listed productive indices.
If you like pay them 2million naira, they cannot be globally competitive without those conditions attached.

Both federal and state governments are busy building universities to massage their ego of building projects in their constituencies but are not ready to back it up with funding. It's in Nigeria that Lecturers are under payed compared to their counterpart in other countries. Most of the universities lack Lecturers to man the programmes; lack infrastructure befitting of a university etc. Some states are even building 2 universities they cannot truly manage but depending on TETFUND.
You actually do not know what you're saying or you're being selfsh.
There's no where in the World where lecturers or Professors are paid the same salary.
For instance, a full Professor in UCT doesn't collect the same salaries with the full Professor in UJ.
People are paid based on many factors such as revenue capacity of the university, capacity of the Lecturers to attract funding, and living expenses in the city where the university is located.

ASUU is very wicked they know the true solution to development challenges confronting Nigeria is true Federalism.
How would the FG decides what to pay lecturers in State University. That's counterproductive to true federalism we are all clamouring for.
In most decent societies, Professors are pointed based and paid based on their ability to bring in money.
Nigeria still has long way to go with all these crooks in academic gown and useless politicians in the corridor of power.

Nobody is fighting for anybody in this country. Everyone is fighting for his or her interest. ASUU will always be a problem irrespective of who is president or which party is in office.

There are only two solutions to the ASUU problem:
1. FG should completely stop funding university education. Parents should be made to pay what is commensurate for the university education they want for their kids.

2. Government should scrap National ASUU completely. Each university should have an independent union to address local issues peculiar only to the university. Even if it’s going to take prolong strike and mass sacking to achieve this, it is worth the trouble.

There is no easy solution to the ASUU problem. FG need to make a tough, painful and firm decision on the union. Pandering to the union every time by signing crazy agreements that can’t be implemented has never worked and will never worked. It’s better to disrupt the system once and for all.

If you still want your certificate to be valid and used to process your documents to Japa out of this country then ASUU is fighting for you (Remember Abia state polytechnic).

If you want to see Nigeria progress then ASUU is fighting for you.

The university is the last of our public school system left to be conquered by the political elites. They came for the primary schools we applauded them, after all primary education doesn't matter, private primary schools can do the job, then they came for the secondary education, we still left them to destroy it, the effect is examination malpractice. Lastly, they are targeting the peak of our education and people are blaming the defenders and not the offenders. If the government destroys our public universities then education will only be limited to the elites and those who intend to leave naija using their certificates will be stock cos your certificate won't be acceptable in any country.

Confucius said "when workers are paid well they're motivated to work well"

How much do you pay primary school teachers, how much do you pay secondary school teachers. You pay a teacher #10k in private school and you expect him to do wonders.

Those backing the government don't know that they are promoting illiteracy and backwardness. Most countries don't value our certificates. I wonder want becomes of you after studying medicine, nursings, engineering, physics, chemistry etc and you are told that your certificate is not recognize abroad then you'll understand what you've opted to defend. What of those doing PhD and MSc just to finish and be informed that you can't go beyond Nigeria with your PG certificate. God forbid

Stay blessed

Stop saying nonsense please. ASUU is fighting for his selfish interest.
If not that we have useless corrupt government officials, you cannot leave your job for more than 5 months and still expected to be paid.
Unfortunately, ASUU is still among the most privileged people in Nigeria.
ASUU out of their selfsh interest increased retirement age from 65 to 70 through the instrumentality of strike in a country where more than 70% of the population is youth with gross unemployment. What a useless union.

Its only in Nigeria use the dean's of faculties having 2 official cars and vice chancellors living like a king.
Dean's of faculties and vice chancellors I have been privileged to meet in better countries drive themselves with nothing like official car.
Unfortunately, the useless people want to be as corrupt as politicians.
University education is over subsidized in Nigeria. You pay more 700, 000 per annum as school fees in just south Africa.
The solution is simple, let the university education be deregulated and each university determines what it will pay each lecturer, and the students should pay actual cost of university education. Government should provide scholarships to indigent students with GP of 2:2 and above, while students below that but indigent should be placed on interest free loans.

EducationRe: FG Committee Recommends ₦ 2 Millions Monthly Pay For Professors by PJ123: 7:40am On Jul 15, 2022
If the content of the proposal is actually true, then ASUU members are nothing but confirmed thieves as their counterparts in politics but in academic gowns.

Even in decent societies that have attained far higher level of economic stability and infrastructural development, lecturers are not paid the same amount. Each university pays it's Lecturers majorly according to the income generating power of the university, and the ability of the Lecturers to attract funds.
Majority of the professors in developed countries are appointed on contract basis and are renewed based on the productivity of the Professor and availability of funding.
ASUU by means of strikes forced the FG to increase retirement age to 70 from 65 years in country where more 60% of the population are youth and with high level of unemployment.
Majority of professors in Nigeria became professor by 45 years and unfortunately, more than 80% of them don't do anything again than to administrative duties except those guys in medical and off course they're already being paid for as they receive double salaries as professor in academic and consultant in teaching hospitals.

How many states governments can conveniently pay half of the proposal? No state not even Lagos given the economic realities in Nigeria.
What's the cost of living in Jos, Kaduna Ibadan that a professor wants to be earning half of that. Before you compare to any school in US, what's the cost of living in that state in US and any state in Nigeria? It must about 10times higher than Lagos that has the highest cost of living in Nigeria.
What's the state of infrastructure in those States in Nigeria and states in US? If there's anything government need to massively spend on, it should be infrastructure in ALL sectors not education alone, but rather in this order ( security, health, social infrastructure and infrastructure in education) in that order. This will ensure secured and meaningful life for everyone irrespective of your income.

If some of the terms on that report is not workable what happens to renegotiating and working out the workable ones?

Summarily : Our leaders are not yet ready to upgrade our education system.
Hopefully Nigerians make the right choice next election.
If the content of the proposal is actually true, then ASUU is indeed a very selfish organisation.
It's not done anywhere.
In developed countries, lecturers are not paid the same salaries, each university pays it's Lecturers based on their income generating power, ability of the lecturers to generate funds for the university.
So, proposing such huge amount as monthly salary only expose them as thieves as their counterparts in politics. You think amount is sustainable given the economic realities in Nigeria.
How many state governments can pay half of the proposal conveniently. None, not even Lagos.
You cannot be comparing US with Nigeria, what's the living expenses in Osun state and living expenses in Ohio, what's the state of infrastructure in Osun state and Ohio.
If there's anything the government need to massively invest into, it's infrastructure in all sectors of the economy because the country is still much backward infrastructure wise, not recurrent expenditure.
Remove sentiment, if you become governor or president today, you cannot pay that amount to anyone except you want to throw your state into chaos
