hilli666:I know. It is a serious slap in the face. God help Nigeria. |
Maybe I am just oblivious of its existence, but I can't remember the last time I saw water from a public source, much less water of drinkable quality, run out of a faucet in Nigeria. In the rare instance that water does run out of a faucet, in my own view, the water came from an overhead reservoir and was originally pumped out of a deep or shallow well. So, why on earth will Nigeria win this award? Am I dreaming? Nairalanders, what do you think? To put it plain, is the Minister of Water Resources lying? Nigeria wins water leadership award By Alex Abutu November 29, 2010 01:44AM print email Nigeria was, at the weekend in Addis Ababa recognised by the World Wide-Life Fund (WWF) for its leadership role in international water policy initiatives. The Nigerian award brings to 20 the number of countries globally recognised for taking action on the United Nations Watercourse convention; seven of the countries are in Africa. Receiving the award on behalf of Nigeria, Obadiah Ando, Minister of Water Resources said the recognition was a testimony to the government's commitment to providing safe and clean drinking water to Nigerians. "Nigeria has taken leadership role in the West African sub-region on issues of water. We are currently responsible for providing 30 per cent of the budgetary requirements of the Lake Chad Bain Authority and the Niger Basin Authority and all this is to improve Nigerians access to safe and clean water," he said. Mr Ando said the federal government was investing massively in the construction and upgrade of dams across the country to increase the country's sanitation rating which currently is appalling. "Our sanitation rating is below 30 per cent and with the investment in new and upgrade of dams we are hopeful of achieving 90 per cent by the next decade," he said, adding that "Half of the infections that Nigerians suffer are water borne and adequate water provision will reduce that." Fast ratification The minister said government investment in water resources was aimed at increasing the water available to the agriculture sector so as to encourage irrigation farming. Presenting the award, Flavia Loures, WWF senior programme officer said Nigeria was accorded the recognition for being the fastest country to ratify the 1997 United Nations Watercourses convention, also known as convention on the law of the non-navigational uses of international watercourses. "It took Nigeria six months to ratify the convention. The same convention took most developed countries more than years," she said. Sagamite:Can you point to the specific time where her demeanor was unnecessarily aggressive? Or was she unnecessarily aggressive throughout the interview? |
Poster, I watched the entire interview and did not see where Isha Sesay disrespected GEJ. Do you want her to kneel down before asking him questions? Do you want her to call GEJ daddy as a sign of respect? She is the interviewer and, as a result, must control the interview, which is what experienced journalists do, for they have limited times within which to get the interviewee to answer all their questions. Sadly, the problem with people like you, like many Nigerians, is that you are used to having your speech restricted for so long, and you are not used to seeing journalists who freely challenge authority. So when you now see a Western journalist who is challenging authority by asking difficult questions, in an attempt to elicit an answer, you call that disrespect. Maybe you should point to the specific time that the alleged disrespect occurred. You are probably one of those villagers who thinks women should unreasonably subordinate themselves to a man to show him respect. Get a friggin life! |
Only in Nigeria will politicians squabble over who made a facebook comment. If GEJ made it, then he should stand his ground by not denying he made the comment (assuming the story about the denial is true). |
our senators are fools. out of all the problems that fraught our country, this idiotic senator is seeking to protect a National Anthem from abuse. Does he know that citizens should have a right to ridicule the National Anthem if they so desire, if it is meant to protest government ineptitude? |
If either Atiku or IBB wins the presidential election, legally or illegally, I will both burn my Nigerian passport and renounce my citizenship. |
sex, food, companionship, girl who dresses slutty |
Jimmy Boy:so were you the one who appraised her assets to deem that her most valuable asset is her name? Do you realize there are people who care less or care not about their name? Please take a break. |
You know after you are discharged from a hospital, you need time to rehabilitate; to that end, I suppose she is rehabilitating in her vacation home abroad. Nonsense justice! |
blacksta:how does your comment relate to the topic? |
I see that Gov. Fashola has an offer from the Brazilian Govt. to sign a memorandum of understanding that will let Nollywood teach Brazilians how to make home videos. Maybe I am missing something, but the article does not state whether the Brazilian Govt. would give something in exchange for the knowledge they would receive from Nollywood. If Fashola did not negotiate from the Brazilians something in exchange for the knowledge that Nollywood would teach them, then he lacks bargaining skills, for Brazil is one of the world's largest renewable ethanol producer, and they can definitely teach us something to that effect. If Fashola is offering Nollywood's expertise only for bragging rights, then that will mean that he is an imprudent Gov. |
Brazilians are probably asking for help in areas such as making a hit movie with a small budget and under unfavorable conditions. Nigeria is a country where, for instance, you can make a hit movie using your Iphone camera, a $5,000 budget, and without adequate electricity. Remember, if they needed expertise with advance technology, they know the way to Hollywood, where, under favorable conditions, movies are produced with substantial budgets. |
Thank you all for your input. I agree with the majority consensus on this thread. I would probably do the same thing, too. |
After reading an article on Next, in which a Nigerian athlete won a gold medal for Qatar at the recently concluded Asian games, it appears there is a growing number of Nigerian athletes who are changing nationalities and competing for other countries, especially oil rich Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar. According to these athletes, many of them switched nationalities because they were treated poorly by Nigerian sports officials, so they had to compete for countries that appreciate them and treat them better. In the article, one of those athletes, Femi Ogunode, said that he was "unjustly dropped" from the 2008 Nigerian team that went to the Beijing Olympics. The article failed to expound on the circumstances surrounding why he was "unjustly dropped" nor state the specific events that will help the reader understand the plight of the athlete. My dear people of Nairaland, do you think athletes should weather the storm by staying home rather than switching their allegiance so that they can fix the problem? Do you think many of these athletes are just "money hungry" people who are putting their financial interests ahead of national interests, and who would compete for any country that gives them residency or citizenship and money? If many of these athletes leave, who will stay home to fix the problems? Do you think this situation is comparable to the "brain drain" issue, in which many of our academicians and intelligentsia have also gone offshore to seek better opportunities, the result of which is a decaying educational system at home? What do you guys think? Below is a link to the Next article from which the idea to this topic came: http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5645681-146/story.csp |
A man who beats his wife is a punk except he beats her during sex or in self defense. But in other circumstances beating may be justified, such as when he uses koboko to discipline her for acting unruly, or when she calls for it. It is also an unfortunate reality that some women will not stay with a man who does not beat her, for they think that men who do not beat them do not love them, or that those men are weak men. |
Gayigaskia:I am not currently not supporting any candidate, because I haven't decided the candidate to whom I should give my support. And even when I decide to support a candidate, I would not support that candidate because we originate the same tribe; it would be because I feel that the candidate is the best for the country. |
I know this is off the subject, but this is Nairaland--this is what we do. Chei, see the tiger's mark on the girls face! I mean why would her parents "scratch" her face like that, ehn? Saidi Balogun should bulala her parents for giving the poor girl the mark of the beast! |
It seems this Northerners think everyone wants to drink kunu and chew kuli kuli, for what is all these nonsense? Why do they feel compelled to put forth a northern candidate to challenge GEJ? All they think about is the North! We need to fight back; Everyone should beware. These Northerners want to turn Naija into a sharia country. Osama Bin Laden is probably sponsoring Atiku. Lord help us |
depth and width test -- make sure the Womanliness is not too deep and wide. If so, danger! elasticity test -- make sure the Womanliness is still elastic. How can the so called tertiary institutions produce high quality graduates when there is no power for them to read; it is difficult to read under adequate lighting lighting let alone read under candles and lanterns. Even when there is light--probably by generator--the noise is sufficient to give any sane student a migraine. GEJ should shut the hell up and fix the darn power problems before I slap him. |
Emeagweli probably has a low self esteem, for he feels he has to substantially embellish his achievements to compensate for his shortfall in obtaining his phD. This man is a bonafide liar, and I would not believe a damn thing he says. He is an who is destroying Nigeria's reputation. How can someone lie to defend his lies. He has lied so much that Emeagwali himself probably does not remember his stories. It is obvious. Most successful people do not have to speak about their achievements; their achievements speak for themselves. It is telling when someone such as Emeagwali has to always speak about his achievements all the time. He is like that guy who meets a girl and spends the whole day talking about how much money he has and blah blah blah. If you have real money, you don't have to say a damn thing; people will see. Emeagwali is muthafuggin liar. He is a disgrace to mankind. |
make sure she is not trying to have sex with you early in the relationship; make sure she begs before she gets laid; make sure she is not materialistic. |

that pic on the front page, the one in which the stretch hummer parked against a backdrop of rundown houses, is just sad; luxury amid poverty. Besides, happy married life to the couple. |

fuke:what if they picked the girls up in an open roof molue, would that have been appropriate? |
Naija four life. This lady is sick in the brain. There is absolutely nothing wrong in having a nickname for your country, especially among the youths. While there are more pressing issues that need to be addressed, this brain dead lady has chosen a trivial issue on which to waste her time. Having nicknames for your country is commonplace: United States is nicknamed Yankee Land or Yankeedom; Australia is nicknamed Oz; United Kingdom, the U.K.; and the like. |
Why can't they pick the girls up in an open trailer like this one.
