Nigerian universities one of the 'substandardest' in the world, poor roads, no light, no business oriented economy, no social safety net, very high income inequality etc. How many people overseas will do aboki, conductors, agberos etc at its crudest form? Nigerians should begin to tackle the problem and not the messenger. Ve visited PH and I saw people (a community) living in houses built with zincs, planks etc. I was really touched.

Culture › Nigerian Girl Expose 'whites Only' Restaraunt In Ghana, Authorities Swoop In. by publisher(op): 7:37pm On Nov 02, 2011
An Nigerian lady Ms Elizabeth Okoro walks into a 'whites only' restaraunt in Accra, raises alarm and Ghanaian authorities move into action.
News Source BBC.

Ghana seafood restaurant denies 'whites only' policy

The Italian manager of a restaurant in Ghana under investigation for allegedly operating a "whites only" policy has told the BBC it was a misunderstanding.

Marco Ranaldi said he made "a joke" about the racial profile of members of the Atlantic Lobsters and Dolphins.

A Ghanaian woman started an online protest after visiting the restaurant a week ago and allegedly being told that it was "only for white people".

Meanwhile, tourism authorities closed it on Tuesday as it was not licensed.

Police are still investigating the allegations of racism.

End Quote Elizabeth Okoro

The BBC's Samuel Bartels in the capital, Accra, says Elizabeth Okoro's campaign on the social media site Facebook has generated a huge uproar in the country.

Ms Okoro, 26, said she visited the restaurant in the capital, Accra, with some colleagues a week ago and was shocked to hear about the membership rules for the establishment.

"My Spanish colleague started filling out the membership book and at that point I said: 'Oh excuse me, I'd also like to join this club', and he responded, 'No, I'm sorry, it's only for white people,'" she told the BBC's Network Africa programme.

"I have not paraphrased, I haven't misconstrued, it wasn't lost in translation, it was an exact statement," she said.

Mr Ranaldi does not deny making the allegedly racist statement.

"When I was giving the member card to the Spanish guy, [and] the lady said, 'Why don't you give it to me?' - so I make a stupid joke. She gave me back an answer like: 'Ah ah, but if you do like this, tomorrow I will come back with police', and she laugh[ed]," he told the BBC.

"So I thought that both of us we were kidding. I mean, I made a stupid joke but I thought that she took it as a joke."

The controversy prompted a visit to the Atlantic Lobster and Dolphins by Ghana's Deputy Minister of Tourism James Agyenim Boateng.

He said the club was being shut down as it did not have a catering permit and was in breach of Ghana's tourism laws.

Politics › As A Nigerian, Choose Between Being Patriotic And Unpatriotic by publisher(op): 5:15pm On Oct 30, 2011
I bumped into this interesting article and a host of others on:

http://thestanleynwabia..com/2011/10/thin-line-between-patriotic-and.html

Makes for good reading,HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! smiley smiley

THIN LINE BETWEEN PATRIOTIC AND UNPATRIOTIC.

Who is a true Nigerian patriot? Is it the man or woman who sees no wrong in the Nigerian polity, or is it the one who places him/herself at the disposal of any government in power? Is a Nigerian patriot the one who believes that his or her views on how to make Nigeria work is the only authentic remedy to the country’s baggage of challenges? Can true Nigerian patriots only be found in the armed forces due to their devotion to the flag and their willingness to lay down their lives for Nigeria?

Who is an unpatriotic Nigerian? Is he or she the activist always involved in elaborately analysing all of Nigeria’s flaws in both local and international platforms, sometimes trying too hard to ensure that his/her own version of Nigeria’s woes appears more morbid than that of other speakers? Are unpatriotic Nigerians the ones who find it difficult taking the word(s) ‘secession’ and ‘Sovereign National Conference’ away from their vocabulary? Is the Nigerian opposition unpatriotic due to their steady criticism of whatever positive or negative decisions the ruling party or government makes?

A general definition of Patriotism is ‘a love of and loyalty to one's country. A patriot is someone who loves, supports, and is prepared to serve their country’. In the Nigerian context, patriotism could also mean ‘a love of and loyalty to one’s government. A Nigerian patriot is therefore someone who loves, supports and is prepared to serve their government’. Notice how the former definition lays emphasis on the ‘country’, while the latter focuses on ‘government’. Clearly, there’s a mix up on the understanding of patriotism by Nigerians. The bigger mix up also occurs in how our patriotism is displayed. As it stands now in Nigeria, if one is in government he or she is automatically a patriot; those in opposition are most likely ‘unpatriotic elements’. Even in the corporate and private sectors, big and successful business people (though some are foreigners) tend to be more patriotic than struggling businesses.

Many well meaning Nigerians sometimes hesitate in branding themselves as patriots lest they be seen as government apologists. Others, especially those in opposition camps who passionately refer to themselves as patriots believe that their patriotic zeal can only be expressed when they dish out firebrand appraisals on the failures of the Nigerian state.

I do not like comparing nations but for the sake of this article, the United States of America and Mexico will be brought into the picture. Some of us have access to international cable news stations, and have been able to watch several American political debates. America presently has its own challenges; rising unemployment, debt crises, terror threats, serial suicide killers and racism. However, whenever Democrats and Republicans are at loggerheads, their arguments always centre on ‘the American people’, as a matter of fact; no statement is complete without reference to the ‘good’ people of America. That they are referring to Americans as ‘good’ does not mean that there are no evil Americans, in fact there are lots of them. American politicians seem to understand the true meaning of patriotism, they may have issues with the government in power but their loyalty to the American people is such that no matter the intensity of any arguments, they try not to say or do anything that would make America as a country or the American people look bad. Another case point is the Latin American nation of Mexico, since 2006, the Mexican government has been in a terrible war with its domestic druglords, over 40,000 mainly innocent people have been killed in execution style, some buried in mass graves. In spite of all this, Mexico remains a number one tourist destination; many A-list Hollywood stars still rush to Mexico for their holidays. Mexicans have been able to convince the world that most parts of their country is peaceful and that Mexicans are generally good people.

Back to Nigeria, whenever I’ve been opportuned to attend or listen to political debates, seminars and talk shows on Nigeria, we tend to see something embarrassingly different from what obtains in the United States or Mexico. Many Nigerian politicians (especially those in the opposition) or interest groups in the heat of any argument will dwell on everything negative about Nigeria and Nigerians, how ethnicity and religious divides have plagued us. They will also remind us that there’s no electricity in Nigeria, no roads and that human life is no longer sacred. In order to further buttress their points they’ll make continuous references to bomb blasts and violence in Maiduguri, Abuja, Jos and parts of the Niger delta.

On the other hand, some Nigerian elite politicians and government officials belonging to the ruling party are also guilty of irritating the populace by making blind patriotic assertions without taking any corresponding concrete steps aimed at soothing the wounds of the nation.

Nigeria is made up of thirty six states and the federal Capital territory (FCT), Abuja. If some locations within three or four states are having constant security challenges; surely the rest of the country is not doing too badly security wise. No one is saying Nigeria does not have tremendous challenges but we seem to have mastered the art of constantly defining and redefining the intensity of our problems instead of focusing solely on solutions. We are all guilty of this, including yours truly, as i have indeed made ‘unpatriotic’ generalizations on issues of corruption in Nigeria in some of my past articles. I’ll probably repeat the same mistake in future because writing on Nigeria can be emotionally overwhelming.

Another point to stress on is that if Nigerians displayed these ‘unpatriotic’ tendencies strictly on domestic platforms, then it could still be fair enough. My spirits are always at its lowest end whenever I watch or read some eminent and not too eminent Nigerian figures making this same mistake on foreign owned media, and trust me, i have seen plenty. Many enlightened Nigerians don’t understand that when a Nigerian bad-mouths his own country in front of a foreigner (no matter how true their point is), he or she does so unwisely. Let's face it; as far as the white newscaster interviewing you about your country is concerned, Nigeria is NOT a living organism, Nigeria is NOT IBB, Yaradua or Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria is NOT Niger-delta ,Jos,Maiduguri or Boko Haram. In the white man or woman's eyes, at that point in time (as they watch you down grade your own country), YOU ARE NIGERIA!!! Thus, if you are a Nigerian residing in a foreign land, be rest assured that any evil you say about Nigeria can and will be used against you.

Patriotism is not about blindly supporting any government in power, neither is it about fighting every government in power. Patriotism is just like answering your father’s family name proudly regardless of whatever visible flaws your own father may have had as a person. In the same vein, ‘unpatriotism’ is similar to dragging your own surname into the mud just because your father who is the source of that name has not lived up to your expectations.

Does patriotism now mean that we become redundant, docile and oblivious towards Nigeria’s huge basket of troubles? No. But it does mean that we concentrate all our energies not on elaborately broadcasting Nigeria’s shortcomings, but on becoming part of the solution. Constructive criticisms must become a mantra for all shades of Nigerian interest groups.

Cos i dont think any Nigerian A-list artiste has released any songs with lyrics on licking the mic or speakers. However, for her to mention this experience and if truly she's visiting SA at the moment, then this must mean that she's been bombarded with Nigerian songs everywhere in SA,and curiosity must have driven her to explore more Naija songs. @OP: Pls ignore some these shallow bastrrds on NL who's combined IQ is not up to one tenth of the wild animals mentioned on this thread.
To ur question,Nigeria has the largest stock of wild life in west Africa mainly in northern Nigeria. However of the big 5 game,we have 3 available,1 extinct and 1 partially available. Nigeria has the largest stock of elephants in west africa. Yankari is acclaimed to have about 500 elephants,Gasaka gumpti park btw Adamawa and Taraba(near the camerounian border is said to have more elephants than Yankari but this is seasonal as these elephant migrate back and forth btw Nigeria and Cameroun. There are forest elephants in okomu, cross rivers and ore. Hippos are found in many northern states, most times in large isolated ponds, there's a very popular one in zamfara state. Kainji lake national park also has many hippos. In the southern parts of Nigeria,u can find pigmy hippos-a smaller sized species. Buffalos can be found in many south western games reserves, oyo national part has many. There are also buffalos in other northern forest areas. Lions are the most threatened in Nigeria. Kainji lake park records occasional sightings, same with Yankari. Giffraffes are partially extinct in Nigeria, the last official indigenous giffrafe in Nigeria was killed by some villagers in the old Gongola state some time in the 1980s. However, migrant Girrafes from Cameroun are sometimes sighted in Gasaka gumpti. Rhinos are extinct in Nigeria, the last one was killed sometime in the 1950s,just b4 Yankari was made a games reserves.
Hyenas are plentiful in many northern states,we see alot of them paraded in lagos being used for entertainment by some hausa boys. Giant antelopes can still be found in parts of Enugu, smaller antelopes are in almost all nigerian states except swampy niger delta areas. Leopards are still rare but there have been sightings in Kainji,Yankari,Gasaka and Cross rivers. Crocrodiles are very common, even here in Lagos around Lekki,Epe and Badagry axis. For birds,Nigeria has many,a spectacle can be seen in Kyarimi park,Borno state where migrant birds from europe come too escape winters. Chimpanzees are plenty in Taraba side of Gasaka gumpti and Cross river national park. Baboons are by far the most popular in Yankari. Silver back gorillas are extinct in Nigeria but regular Gorillas can be foung in Cross river national park. Dolphins and sharks can be sighted off the coast of Ondo,AkwaIbom and Rivers during hamarttan season.
Its just a pity that Nigerians focus only on oil, ecotourism would have turned Nigeria around.
Hope my post satisfies ur curiosity.

That explains why you'll see old Yoruba people living in shacks with their numerous grand children wearing pant and roaming the streets. But as soon as this old yoruba elder dies,u'll first see 2 cows infront of his/her rundown building, with workmen rushing to renovate the building. Thats when u'll see the london based children showing up from left right and centre. Most of the old (non hausa) beggars i've seen in Lagos and Ibadan are Yoruba people. People are not really being honest here. The truth is that if a Nigerian guy walks the streets of any Nigerian city hand in hand with his white oyinbo wife, people are most likely going to hail him,and give him respect for conquering oyinbo toto.
However,if a Nigerian woman walks hand in hand with an oyinbo man in any Nigerian city, people are most likely going to assume that she's a foreign based LovePeddler and the white dude is probably her P#IMP".

Unfortunately, Nigerian women make matters worse for themselves. Whenever a Nigerian man brings home his oyinbo girl, the white lady most times is YOUNG and BEAUTIFUL,sometimes FAT,but still young with a pretty face. But when you see our Nigerian women with a white guy,the white dude is most times an OLD MAN in his late 50s or 60s. I have NEVER seen any Nigerian girl dating a 'Brad Pitt' kinda white dude.

Yes o,Coup is the ONLY solution to some NairaLanders abi? These are the same fools that would start crying about human rights and freedom once the coup takes place. Ofcourse the ethnic group of the coup leader will now become an issue. MEND will totally halt oil exports from the Niger Delta. Some foolish Yoruba leaders (after they must have encouraged the coup) will now run to London and appear on BBC and CNN calling for a sovereign national conference.

Nairaland will become one of the first websites that the federal mililary government would shut down.

THANK GOD FOR OBASANJO,his singular move of retiring ALL military officers that had ever held political positions, and subtly allowing the Niger-Delta Militants to flourish is exactly what has balanced the equation in Nigeria. If not,the military would have taken over when Aso rock became vacant for almost a year due to a brain dead Yaradua.

Abeg, any military government that appears in Nigeria will be consumed by the same reasons that brought it to power. I've not even mentioned sanctions from the international community. Mtcheewwwwww! If yorubas are so bitter about their non-inclusion in the present power structure, they should hold Tinubu responsible for ganging up with the North and pushing out the speakership from the south-west,which PDP had already zoned to the region.

To all Yoruba folks in Nigeria, the earlier some of you allow Awolowo and his legacies to rest in peace, the better for Yorubaland.
I still have a problem with Lagos being counted as a south western state and being bragged by Yorubas as evidence of their achievement. Lagos was Nigeria's capital for like a hundred years. Wont it be utterly ridiculous if in many years time Abuja becomes Nigeria's 37th state, the Gwaris now start claiming that Abuja is their achievement?

Ibadan and Abeokuta are THE ONLY real cities that Yorubas can truly lay claims on,every other south western city village is an eyesore to say the least, the array of brown rusted roofs in most of these cities is depressing. Its like these towns just stopped developing right where Awolowo left them in the 60s. There is no exotic city in south western Nigeria, except their 'EKO'.
In the south east, though the region had over the years being deliberately starved of quality infrastructural development by federal government, the region has surpassed many expectations. Onitsha and Aba,though with serious infrastructural challenges are VERY viable industrial towns, with prospects of even bigger growth. I've not even mentioned Nnewi areas. When i first visited Enugu and Owerri,i was shocked at the exotic nature of those cities,i didnt see the horizon of brown rusted rooftops like the ones in Osogbo,Ogbomosho,Ife,Abeokuta and 80% of Ibadan. Owerri was particularly enchanting and magic. In the south south there's Uyo and Calabar,Uyo is gradually turning into a sort of Dubai, their new structures are fantastic.

The problem with most core Yorubas is that they honour and worship politicians who are only good at scoring political points without any corresponding developmental points. On the other hand,Igboland has the worst politicians on the planet but the igbo private individuals are too industrous for any modern developments to ellude them, especially in trade and commerce.
When will Yorubas produce a Donald Duke that took up an obscure CrossRivers state known for dog meat and okada rider, but has now become the tourism capital of Nigeria. Ondo state should be the tourism capital of Southwest Nigeria with its breath taking landscape and long beaches (Yes,Ondo has fantastic undeveloped beaches) but that is not happening. You guys are just busy waiting for Tinubu to fart on your faces before you guys realise how stinking Yoruba leadership has been since the demise of Awolowo.

Nobody outside Imo and Anambra knows anything about the states besides the fact that they are both in the East.
