Music/Radio › Nigerian Music Dominance Leads To Shelving Of Mtv Base Awards 2011 by publisher(op): 1:43pm On Dec 17, 2011 |
I just stumbled on unconfirmed 'amebo' gist which suggests that Nigeria is the reason why there's not going to be any MAMA awards for 2011. According to 'my source',other African countries had complained to MTVs mgt that Nigerians have pocketed MTV base and that since the inception of the MAMA awards in 2008 ,Nigerians always recieved the chunk of the awards. Plans were on the way to move MAMA 2011 to Cape town, but unfortunately out of the proposed nominations,Nigerian songs like Oleku,Nwa baby,Mr Endowed and the rest recieved about 80% of all nominations. Making it inevitable that Nigerian artiste would have still picked the chunk of Mama 2011 awards and this may have angered South Africa and other African nations, thus the event had to be canned. 'My unconfirmed source' also stated that the same fate may befall the 'Big brother Africa 2012' show,as Nigeria's consecutive wins in its three last editions had prompted threats from South African fans.
PS: this is unconfirmed amebo gist and not fact o. |

OH Get real,BUHARI IS NEVER GOING TO BE NIGERIAN PRESIDENT. Or who's going to vote for a 70 something year old man in 2015? If Buhari is a true leader,he's suppose to be grooming and mentoring a younger man who can be presented to Nigerians in 2015. The hallmark of a true leader is being able to mentor younger leaders into greatness. Obasanjo may be an A$$ according to many Nairalanders, but he has been able to mentor two people into becoming Nigeria's preseident ( Yaradua,Goodluck). A leader who believes that ONLY he alone can effect the desired change in Nigeria (at his old age) is a stvpid 'Mugabean'. |

Growing up in Lagos-Nigeria as a child around the 1980s and early 1990s was without doubt a very eventful and memorable period. While our parents and other grownups back then spent their time pondering and worrying about the drowning economy, value of the naira, new price of bread and petrol or the next military coup, some of us were busy enjoying our childhood. As children, our routine was streamlined from Mondays to Fridays; go to school early in the morning, close from school in the afternoon, get home around 3pm, put on the television, stumble upon rainbow colour lines with background music and wait for NTA to start its programming by 4pm. Once the national anthem starts playing, we all rush to the telly and for the next two to three hours, we stay glued to our television set. Weekend television programming was also somewhat exciting especially on Sunday evenings when we look forward to watching ‘Tales by moonlight’ and by 8pm, the latest Nigerian soap opera would air. All television and radio stations were owned by^^^ continue reading on http://thestanleynwabia..com/2011/12/entertaining-our-children-on-nigerian.html |

norrisman: Too many dimwits on Nairaland shouting balance of trade,SA will lose more, Nigeria will lose more blah blah blah. Do you clowns really think trading will stop between the 2 countries over a minor diplomatic spat where the police didnt even manage to gain entrance. The police of a country can be called to a foreign mission when a crime is reported. I have seen the Met called to the Nigerian High Commission in London before. If the South Africans called the police and reported that they were being held against their wishes do you think the SA police are like your NPF that would take no action. Israel that is 10 times more powerful than your poo hole had its embassy invaded and ransacked in Egypt recently and heaven did not fall so much more a banana republic. Even when there are strained diplomatic relations between 2 countries, it is business as usual. Even with sanctions in place, the US remained a consumer of Iraqi, Iranian and Libyan oil!
I was in Nigeria a couple of weeks ago and every single official at the airport either begs you for money or tries to make your life difficult so you can pay your way out. On the way the airport, a policeman stops my friend, who although his car papers were up to date, he didnt have them in the car due to the car being broken into recently and all his personal effects removed. The policeman, realising we were on the way to the airport said we must follow him to the mobile court. In any normal country, in the absence of technology for instant verification, you should be allowed to produce the said documents once it can be established that tue car isnt stolen. To cut the long story short, we parted with N3500. At the airport, the first people I met, probably from the airline cos they were ticking some names begged for money. Then another guy who scanned the passport. Thank goodness he didnt beg for money. Then the customs, parted with N2000 for daring to export indomie noodles and cassava flakes (garri lol). At the check in counter, check in lady stylishly asks for money to put me in a window seat WTF . Refused and accepted seat in the middle. There isnt much of a scene at 33000 feet. Then the guys at the entrance to the restricted area of the airport who check . boarding passes begged for money. Final one was the Nigerian Immigration Service who said to me I couldnt travel because my passport couldnt be fully read by their scanner due to staple holes on it made by an embassy I had applied to previously. Now this is the same passport I came into the country with 10 days earlier. Why didnt the slowpoke who scanned it on my arrival inform me of this so I could have arranged for a replacement. Of course he wont, I am more valuable to them on my way out of the country. While waiting in their dingy office, I saw them harrassing several Nigerians and Asians not because of a sense of wanting to do their jobs but because of what they could get. After half an hour in their office, I told the guy asking me what I want to do to bsettle the matter that I gave the customs my last Naira and he said he would accept foreign currency. I told him I had none and brought out my British passport and told him I wished to travel with that. He realised he had been defeated, this time around and mumbled some incoherent ish and gave me back my passport saying make sure u replace it before you come back home. I felt like telling him, I hope not to be back anytime soon! But I kept my mouth shut.
With me experiencing all this about 4 hrs, I wouldnt put it past the goons at the high commision in Joburg to demand bribes. They must have at one time or the other worked in some positions internally in Nigeria and like they say old habits die hard. Abegi, people like you love to add salt and sugar to one-off experiences in order to buttress your lousy points. The truth is that in MOST cases,if your hands are TOTALLY clean,no Nigerian official can milk any bribe from you. Highest they may directly or indirectly ask for TIPS; which happens in EVERY country of the world, one way or another. |

kizito96: Corruption is a way of life in Nigeria. The Senate has to enshrine this in our constitution. At least South Africa should have known that bribery is constitutional in Nigeria. You are just a slowpoke, have you verified the 'bribe' allegations? Is it not possible that the South Africans were coming to Nigeria for a different mission and used church activities as a front? What else would motivate the South african police to get directly involved if some serious South African INTERESTS were not at stake. Wetin be the name of the church sef? Who knows that church in Nigeria, when its not Redeemed,Winners.Deeper Life,MFM or TB Joshua. But yes,its possible that the Nigerian Diplomats asked for 'bribes',but its also possible that they did this when it was discovered that the South Africans were travelling to Nigeria for a different economic reason not religious. That's my own conspiracy theory. However,i stand with Nigeria on this one. |

A new twist has occurred in the conviction of Ali Sada Umar, convicted former spokesman of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, as his father, Alhaji Sanda Konduga, sensationally declared on Saturday that his son has “mental challenges.” The senior Konduga said this at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday afternoon. Speaking amidst chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Borno State, Konduga first offered background information about himself before he read a prepared statement.
Konduga said he was leader of the defunct Great Nigeria Peoples Party (GNPP) in the House of Representatives in the Second Republic, having left the civil service in 1966. He joined the NPP and became a foundation member of the GNPP. He said his son might probably have inherited his “mental challenge” from his late mother whom he quickly divorced when she was pregnant with him. His words: “My late wife, his mother, had a mental weakness and this divided us. It was believed that if someone has a mental challenge, it would affect the offspring. It’s from there I believed he would have this illness (sic).
“Ever since he was born, I have never spent a night with him in my house. When I divorced his mum, she was pregnant with him. She gave birth to him three months after I divorced her. “At 18 months, she gave him to my elder sister, who is also deceased. He often visited my house and would go to see my wife, that is, his step-mother and often times, he would sit alone with his radio for company, even when his step-brothers are in the house.” On his son’s involvement with Boko Haram, Konduga said: “I’ve never known him with such involvement. I never knew he was even a member of Boko Haram and if you remember, Boko Haram has already said he was not their member.”
The old man said he only got to know of his son’s arrest on television like other Nigerians. “Before I became aware of his arrest, I saw him on television. I heard he was arrested and taken to Abuja. The only time I knew of his arrest was on television.” Alhaji Konduga then proceeded to read his prepared statement, which had earlier been distributed to newsmen present at NOVACAD Hotel Limited in Wuse Zone 3, Abuja. The one-page statement dated December 1 and personally signed by him reads: “I and my family received with deep shock, the news of the arrest of my son, Ali Sanda Konduga, his arraignment and subsequent conviction on November 22 by an Abuja Magistrate’s Court.
“Ordinarily, we thought he would face a trial with counsel representation, for us to explain the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his mental health. Ali Sanda Konduga since his childhood had faced mental challenges. It is unfortunate that we now find ourselves in this situation. We shall therefore, appeal against this judgment. “We want to seize this opportunity to apologise to Sen. Ali Ndume, late Amb. Saidu Pindar’s family, and the entire elders of Borno State for the pain and embarrassment caused on account of the purported claims of my son. “We plead for understanding as we strive to ensure the review of those unfortunate and improper conviction without counsel representation.”
When contacted on the claims of the senior Konduga, Ms. Marilyn Ogar, spokesperson for the State Security Services (SSS) said: “Nigerians are not stupid. He was ANPP chairman at a time and he couldn’t even send his son to school while he can speak English. “How come he suddenly realized that his son is insane after the boy had claimed membership of Boko Haram?” Ali Konduga had implicated Senator Ali Ndume as one of the sponsors of Boko Haram. Ndume was remanded in SSS custody and his bail application comes up for hearing on Monday, December 5. I think the SSS has really created an upset in Boko Haram's setting. Dont be surprised if a faction of BH wakes up one day and decides to lay down their arms,as a 'plea bargain' for top politicians who have been exposed as sponsors. |

1. A non-existent Police Force 2. Inability to defend yourself by carrying a weapon
The law has to change so that I can legally carry a weapon. People have said this will lead to more murders, but they seem to forget that a person who intends to kill you does not need a gun. Before guns came along even cave-men committed murder using clubs. Just shut up,abeg! |

mbulela: Not everyone trades in lies, either online or in the real world. Check my history here. Go to UPTH and find the girl. May be your doubting tendencies will be sorted. The fact that you go to Silverbird everyday does not prove anything. The crux of the matter is that security in PH is getting bad again. I just spoke to one of the consultants who saw her. I am sure you don't want me to divulge details of her medical records here? What i dont understand is why you posted this story on NL and the silly moderator that made it a headline story. Initially,I thought there was a stick up at Silverbird PH and perhaps hundreds of people where randomly robbed by numerous armed men. Apparently, this was just a mugging and an unfortunate Nigerian lady (visiting from abroad) fell victim. Tourists have been kidnapped, murdered or even raped in Kenya and South Africa,i dont see citizens of those countries elevating such instances and making it look like a national catastrophe. Only Nigerians like doing that. My heart goes out to the victim though. |

Interestingly I went to the SAME movie theater a few weeks afterwards. The only sad truth is that such marriages hardly last, either due to cultural complications or the fact that married Yoruba women are still addicted to owambes and social functions. Igbo men tend not to like it when their wives want to attend every owambe party or social gathering they are invited to. Yoruba men on the other hand are cool with owambes (home & abroad),unfortunately, these setting constitutes breeding grounds for infidelity, thus the high rate of divorce amongst Yoruba couples |
