On wikipedia, the first Oba name is registered as Eweka

Cant help but notice that the name is similar to the Igbo name called Emeka.

Wat does Eweka mean in Bini, does anybody know?

Could the name be a corrupt version for the igbo name Emeka?

Could igbos from Nri have founded the bini kingdom and due to mixing with yorubas created the bini dialect?
Hehehehe. Too funny, braah. Too funny. grin

That is highly unlikely, the source that i was going to refer u to was not credible, neither is wikipedia but at least we get some basics from wikipedia.

Do u dispute these facts? if u do then specify the particular one that u dispute.
I dispute the Nri bit. Very much. Ogboli-Issele may have some connections with Nri. But Issele people will disagree strongly and tell you all of Issele, including Ogboli-Issele is from Benin. Anybody saying Issele is of Nri origin is definitely not from Issele or even Anioma.

Again, Wikipedia can never be a reliable source. If i want I can go now and edit Wikipedia so that it will read that Kano was founded by the Japanese.

THE BINI GANG BANGERS, MAKE UNA READ WAT ISSELE UKWU PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT WHO DEY ARE AND THEIR ORIGIN.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Issele_Ukwu

Issele Ukwu is a city in Nigeria's Delta State and headquarters for the Local Government Area of Aniocha North. It is also the Episcopal See of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Issele Ukwu.

It has its own post office and is served by the nearby new Asaba International

The community of Issele Ukwu is related to Kingdom of Nri. Oral traditions said that the founders of Issele Ukwu and the people of Nri came from the same source.[1]

Issele Ukwu is part of the ethnic territory of the Igbo people. The area is growing with immigrant communities of Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Ijaw, Hausa and Yoruba people .
This is Wikipedia. Probably edited just a few minutes ago by a southeasterner. No Issele indigene will say his people came from Nri. None.

Bini and Agbor had many turbulent periods but it wasn't a war. and it wasn't as far back as the 15th century like that guy wants us to believe.
I don't know how you define war, but when you send out an Ezomo (war commander) at the head of an army to attack a town and the town sends out its own army to defend itself, it is a war, my friend.

Also 1577 is the 16th century, not the 15th, and it corresponds approximately to the time Oba Ehengbuda sent his Ezomo to attack and conquer Agbor.

The way Igbo people throw their history is amusing. Bini never conquered Agbor. there is nothing like Idu-Ika war. All the Ika communities that were formed in the fifteenth century were founded by members of Bini Royal family fleeing from the crises in the royal family.
Erm... Benin and Agbor actually fought at least two wars, and Benin did conquer Agbor. Also, I think you people are being too simplistic when you say all Ika communities were founded by members of Bini royal family. I am not contesting that some indeed were founded from Benin, but some were also of local origin. For information on Agbor origins, read the History of Agbor by Chief Iduuwe.

Its clear you're one of the descendants of the Bini army the Anioma resistance crushed in the great Ubulu war of 1755 and scattered their remnants all over Anioma. Every Anioma town from agbor in the West to onicha in the East to abo in the South all sent reinforcements to help defend Ubulu Ukwu during that Bini war of aggression. The only town that did not was Isele Ukwu.
You Edo descendants are recent settlers to Anioma... So when issues concerning Anioma are raised,it's pertinent that you allow the aborigines make the decision. As for your stance on Biāfra I'd appreciate that bkos outside the Igbo tag, Biāfra is another identity common to all "bia" speakers undecided
Guy, where is your information coming from? I have a detailed account of the Ubulu-Ukwu war with Idu and the military commanders that fought on both sides. The other towns in Ubulu clan (Ubulu-Unor and Ubulu-Okiti) did not send re-enforcements to Ubulu-Ukwu, not to talk of the whole of Anioma.

helpishere:
My take again on this topic is this, if a king of a kingdom dies and a total stranger inherits the kingdom, ie, Emir of Kano, Sultan of Sokoto, Ooni of Ife, Alafin of Oyo, these are no kingdoms. These kings are turn by turn. Bayero's son did not inherit the Emirship of Kano, ditto Sijuade's son but the title was given to another family who was not even the first son, Dasuki was deposed as Sultan and another took over, not his son but a cousin or relative. But the Oba of Benin cannot be selected. The day the first son of the Oba is born, that is the day the next king is known. And he will be trained in the ways and manners of his people. There are only two kingdoms in the world: The Benin Kingdom and the United Kingdom. These two kingdoms interface with each other in values and traditions though the Benin Kingdom is higher. They have Prince of Wales and Edaiken of Uselu. These posts are for crown Princes, waiting to take over the throne though Prince Charles don tire for him mama. The brothers of both Kings are made Dukes and Enogies to rule over smaller villages. When the brother of Queen Elizabeth abdicated the throne, he was replaced by a lady, Queen Elizabeth. That is an abomination in Benin Kingdom. When Oba Ovoranmen was banished to Calabar, his son did nothing but waited until his father's death before he became King. And from the first king to the 40th king of Benin Kingdom, they are from Father to Son just like the kingdom of Judah in the Bible whose kings were Father to Son while Israel's kings were by selection. The Sultan, Kano Emir and Ooni are political titles, they never knew that they will be king at any point in time. These are the Nairabet winners. They gambled and won and they make themselves visible by commenting on every issue. You dont hear the Oba of Benin do that. He has Chiefs from the Palace that speaks on his behalf. And these Chiefs are also from known Houses who inherited the titles from their fathers. Benin Empire was visible up to Ghana. Togo's Presidents always come to Benin City because the Eyademas claim that they come from Benin. There are three Universities of Benin in West Africa, One in Togo, One in Benin Republic and one in Benin City. The Benin Republic was known as Dahomey but they later changed their name to Benin to recognize their origin. Benin Empire might be small but it was commanding a lot of kingdoms and peoples. The United Kingdom was less than 45m people but they were in control of India comprising of Bangladesh, Pakistan and India which in today's census figures are more than 2.5 b people today. A small 3 countries in One with less than 45m people were controlling over 5 b people including Nigeria, Canada, Kenya and many countries of their COMMONWEALTH. What led to the fall of the British Empire is linked to the curse that was placed on the kingdom by the Benin Iwebo shrines for invading the Benin Kingdom and carting away all their artefacts both from the Holy Aruosa and the king's palace and the banishment of the king into exile. If you read Jeremiah in the Bible, that scenario was described as King Nebuchadnezzer of Babylon who was sent to destroy the kingdom and take the king into exile. The effect of that curse led the king of to abdicate the throne because of a divorced American lady.. And the current quagmire facing Prince Charles who is not preferred to be king but the grandson. Queen Elizabeth came to Benin City in the 60s to beg Oba Akenzua for forgiveness and I have no information if it was done else they would have voluntarily returned the artefacts they stole from the kingdom. Make I go rest. Merry Christmas to all citizens from the Bini Kingdom and long live the 40th Oba of Benin, Ewuare 11 the Great.
I am sorry, but this uber-narrow definition of 'Kingdom' is super ridiculous. I hope you don't teach Government in any school sha.

Slavery was not as bad as it seemed?! SLAVERY WAS NOT AS BAD AS IT SEEMED??!!!!

And calling the trans-Atlantic slave trade what it was (a racist/racial enterprise) is propaganda??!!!

Wow. You people (black people) on this board make me want to throw up in my mouth.

You think because a number of black people (and some Native Americans as well) gained their freedom, bought land and got other black slaves to work for them, then American slavery is no longer the evil, racist institution that it was??!!

Wow. It's black people like you that fly the confederate flag, go out of your way to demonstrate to white people that you are not like 'dem niggers', and believe black people chose to be slaves. I am sick right now.

Pigin English (because 99%students & south east/south can speak Pigin)
Hausa (100% North can speak hausa while 60% southwest can speak hausa)
Yoruba
Igbo
More than any other part of Nigeria I have visited, people from the southeast struggle with Pidgin.

I also seriously doubt that 60% of the southwest can speak Hausa. 60%!

You know nothing about Ubulu history. That Hausa man wears turban doesn't mean he came from Arabia. That you wear a suit to the office doesn't mean you came from Europe. Benin was a powerful kingdom and influenced all the smaller kingdoms around it. Some of these kingdoms claimed that their ruling families came from Benin. BUT NOT ALL OF THEM MAKE THAT CLAIM! FOR EXAMPLE, OGWASHI-UKU AND UBULU DYNASTIES DON'T CLAIM BINI ANCESTRY.

@RedboneSmith, the things that differentiate Yoruboid from Yoruba proper are the same things that differentiate Igboid from Igbo and (at least in my opinion) constitute Igbo culture (traditional belief system, arts, cuisine, etc.). I wasn't dodging any question.
We could have an interesting discussion about Igbo culture and what it really is, and then determine if it is possible to distinguish Igboid from Igbo based on culture. But sadly, you are not really engaging my question.

Traditional belief system? What are those elements of Igbo belief system? Are they really pan-Igbo (i.e., do they exist exclusively in all the so-called Igbo areas) and non-existent in the so-called igboid areas?

Cuisine? Can you name a dish which is common to all the so-called Igbo areas --- all of them --- but which the so-called Igboid areas do not indulge in?

Arts? Are there art forms which ALL the so-called Igbo people practise which the so-called Igboids don't?

I want to know if we can really articulate a common Igbo culture which can be demonstrated as separating the Igbo from those you would called Igboid. Put Yoruboid matter aside; this may not be a "London is to England, as Paris is to France" situation.

CultureRe: The Fulanization Of Ilorin; The Power Of Curses by RedboneSmith(m): 12:32pm On Dec 29, 2016
There was no Fulanization in Ilorin. Fulanization (just like Latinization and Arabization) should have come with the adoption of the Fulani language. Since that did not happen, and since the Fulanis forgot their Fulani language and picked up Yoruba language and even names, it is more correct to say that what happened in Ilorin was the Yorubanization of Fulani people.

This is an uninformed opinion. Nigerians give their children Arabic and English names, without considering themselves Arabs or English. It is a matter of cultural and sometimes political influence.
