I guess it's pastors' bashing day but I found your comment genuinely sensible and would like to answer you on what they do with the money. Where I worship(not a pastor but fully involved in the ministry), there is a tithe and offering box where people go to drop what they have at their own convenience. No collection or donation during service. The money is used for
1.Running the church: building churches, buying buses, generating sets, pa equipment, printing gospel literature etc. The mission of the church is to pray, preach and publish
2. Sustaining the volunteers that work for the church. Many pastors are not on full time service, but there are drivers, printers etc who work full time for the church
3. Works of charity: members visit blind centres(I go with a team to blind centres and you don't go empty handed), hospitals, schools and prisons. The needy and widows are catered for as the church hosts a charity day of free and cheerful sharing
4. Missionaries are trained and supported both locally and internationally. Rural evangelism is sponsored.etc
Many Christians have discovered that what you give is what you get. You give love, you get love. You invest in the less-privileged, others will remember you. Tho personally, I don't give to receive. It's my PLEASURE to do so!

This is a negative attitude. Critics don't produce anything but criticism. If you don't believe in what you're doing, quit.

Just to lift the mood of those that find all these depressing: I've changed job four times without knowing anybody. I think where the nepotism thing is more noticed is with government agencies.
If you manage to find your way into international NGOs, you will see that experience and integrity (not necessarily paper qualifications) will keep opening more doors for you.

I still think that job opportunities should be driven by the private sector. Government should create enabling environments (roads, light and security) so that brains like the ops can use their training to create jobs

Vavavoom: APC or ACN can do an alternative good governance tour to highlight how much better their programs are instead of giving the public an impression of lack of foresight. Their decision to pull out is looking more of about hindsight drawn from the positive reception the ruling pdp is ganering from projects delivered through the GGT. ACN and co should have seen this coming before being sucker punched. This is the same issue I have with ACN and other opposition parties in the country. DOn't dine with the devil even with a long spoon...we've seen it in the sharing of the ECA, and other monies accruing to the federation. These parties in both houses join the much maligned pdp and then later through public proxies shout to high heavens about squandering...it doesn't make them different in the public sphere. Food for thought.

At a personal level, I am convinced that if Nigeria had been moving at the speed it has moved in the past 13 years, we would have gone very far.
I go to PH frequently and see the wonders Amaechi has done with public schools and health centres and I am impressed.
I go to Gombe and I am impressed with what Goje did there.
I go to Enugu and I see the transformation of roads done by Sullivan. Ngige during his time in Anambra was a literal Messiah.
The Okigwe-Afikpo road which was a death trap and untouched since the civil war ended has become a leisurely ride since julius Berger worked on it.
My last trip to Uyo made me wonder where Akpabio was made from. I mean Uyo, to me, is almost finer than Calabar (the road network is far better).

I like what I am seeing here: the government-sponsored ones and the private-sector supported ones. Governments don't drive economies: the private sector does.

I am surprised that people still buy these stories. They follow a predictable pattern:
1. The woman announces to all that she's pregnant
2.She's placed on hormonal drugs and begins to gain abnormal weight
3. ALL tests prove negative. It's only the prayer place that can SEE the baby
4. The pregnancy always exceeds the normal nine months and the pregnant woman keeps bleeding
5. The baby is never delivered in a regular hospital or maternity home but must be born in the prayer house which had told the woman she was pregnant
6. The new mom returns home, sometimes carrying the placenta and used sanitary towels to convince skeptical neighbours and inlaws.

Slapping mama had nothing to do with discipline, training or affection. It had all to do with the matriarch's disposition. This is why I told the op that her mom is emotionally needy. Considered a failure by a society which stigmatizes a female divorcee as a failure, all hopes of being reconciled to her husband dashed by seeing the man has moved on with another woman, she pours in all her love (and occasional frustrations) on this only child she can call her own. The young woman, who hopes to be a mom one day, should reassure her mom of her love and support, not threaten or retaliate. They have each other and will pull through this difficult phase and enjoy adult friendship.

At 90, my grandma was still slapping my 70year old mom and calling her a naughty child. She also covered my mouth with a slap once.
Now that she's gone, we remember her with so much tenderness and love; the odd slaps notwithstanding, she was a very likeable person.
Tough love! But you won't have her forever! Go, girl, tell Mom you love her soooooo much and even tho you resent the slap, you know she loves you enough to care about how you behave and you'll always be there for her.
