nearest: Help, my desktop computer keep loading default settings everytime I boot it. I need help.

Change the bios battery!

deji2009: 1 Identify the laptop make and model. look underneath the laptop.

2 Visit maker's website and look for support and drivers section.

3 Make sure windows 7 ultimate or windows 7 professional drivers are available.

4 Visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
to run the upgrade tool, if that would be easier for you.

5 Finally, decide whether you want to upgrade or not


It took me time to type this so please follow all instructions

UPGRADE ke?I can bet his laptop won't pass the compactibility test..in dis situation,an upgrade is not d solution...D dude is using windows 7 starter,I suspect the system is either corrupt or infected but he can still try this:
1..Boot d system into safe mode by pressing F8 repeatedly on startup screen
2.Click on start,type msconfig and press enter
3.Click on services then check d box 'hide microsoft....'
4..Take a snapshot of all the services running(press prtscrn on ur keyboard then paste in paint and save)
5.Attach the saved copy here so we can help u analyze which services to stop
6.Click on startup,uncheck or deselect everytin
7..Click on apply then ok
8..Restart the compu

1 disinfect the system at startup(for me,I use a kaspersky rescue disk.for dos dat don't know,when u buy a kaspersky antivirus cd,the cd itself is the rescue disk..just use it to boot ur system.d only disadvantage is,it won't contain d recent updates)
Repair the OS(to b frank,its a tricky procedure u cld miss ur way and may accidentally wipe out d system)so I can suggest u give to a software engineer.

Don Lala: Great peeps I need help. I tried to upgrade Vista (Home Edition) on my HP laptop to Window 7 (Home edition) D uprade went on for several hrs but wen I was 28% left to complete setup I had a shutdown due to power failure. Wen I tried to restart d system it will try to boot and show error message that windows be reinstalled. When I tried to upgrade again it says can't upgrade that I should reinstall. I don't want to lose my files and datas cos no back up. Pls ow do I either complete d upgrade or go back to my old OS as no partition and d old OS is not showing.

ALARORO!take the hard drive out and put into an external hard drive casing..connect it to another system to save ur files..
step 2..return the hard drive to ur systema>>format it and do a windows 7 clean install

As I always say..let the professional do his job,desist from do it urself..wen u installed,windows must have prompted u that there is an existing installation..and u chose to install into a new directory..problem is..windows.old folder contains system files that windows wld not allow u to delete..the easiest way for me is to mount dat drive on linux and delete everytin or boot in dos and use dos commander to delete..

It means your system display card settings are too high for your monitor.Right mouse button click on an empty space on your desktop and go to properties. Then settings->advanced and you should be able to adjust the vertical frequency down to 60hz or 72hz or simply change ur screen resolution to something lower like 800x600 or 1024x800 depending on the graphics driver ur using

To an extent 'yes'..the only things that are easier to recover are your media files,the more u write to ur hard drive,the slimmer the chance of recovery!

If there is no product key there, check under your laptop or around the side, you find a sticker that has the window's logo on it. the product key is on that sticker,type it in and activate.

I tink u are having a bluescreen error(bsod) caused largely by hardware conflict or incompactible driver conflict..its had to tell what the solution is from what u wrote..

I guess the guy must have reloaded the system but on installation chose to activate later..the version of the os may have changed from the product key he has under d system..ie home premium normally ships wit basic system,he may have an ultimate now

dragnet: once again, in addition to what our able engr sameolg explained to you, you could just search for ccleaner, download n install....run ccleaner to delete all useless temp and cached files..then click the tools tab and select start up...then delete or disable most of the apps that arent necessary..e.g adobe updater..installshield ..office..etc that you'd see hanging in there.....you could also maximise the ccleaner startup list and take a snapshot so we culd help u decide.

True!I totally forgot about cleaning registry..ur post is a prerequisite to my post.and if our wahala is hard to follow,just resolve it wit a clean format just to be on a safe side..atimes,wat we recommend here sounds so simple but infact a perfection of continous practice over years.soi wld have preferred if we technicians on this site can specify their locations so when pple have problems we can refer them to the technician closest to them,some like that radio program AUTOMEDICs.

Is your laptop a CELERON.only celerons have the tendency of shutting down when extremely hot or u always place it on ur bed(ie for a laptop that has its vent under the laptop,it becomes blocked wen u place it on the bed..it would become hot and eventually choke to SHUTDOWN.
Another obvious cause could be ur processor FAN aint working or working well!
In any case,its a hardware related issue..meet a hardware technician

I just saw ur scrren shot..here are my observations:
1.U have a lot of programs autostarting with windows on bootup.
Firefox.exe is the highest consumer of ur ram(270mb)
Reason is,u have a lot of multiple tabs open
2..Iexplorer.exe.(Internet explorer)..there are 3 instances of ie open..ie u are opening in new window rather than 1 window and multiple tabs
3..Also u have nokia ovi suite runnin on startup
4..Avastui..one reason y I never recommend avast to any1 is because its default self-defence mechanism is constantly scanning anything u do(open,read,save) and that way execution time is delayed.in some cases,some pple have pointed out that avast crashes system.
Solution:
1..Click on start,type MSCONFIG and press enter
2.A window would come up wit system configuration.click the button SELECTIVE STARTUP..click on APPLY.
3.Point ur mouse on SERVICES and click,check the box below that says HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES so it can show u only the 3rd party applications
4.U may not be able to determine effectively which service to stop or start but here are the obvious ones..uncheck ituneshelper(trick tin is itunes use BONJOUR SERVICE,APPLE MOBILE DEVICE,IPOD SERVICE)so u will uncheck all corresponding services wit it..
5. Also un check the NOKIA?,click on apply
6.Point ur mouse on STArTUP and click..
7.Here are the usual suspects,uncheck anything ADOBE,NOKIA,QUICKTIME,OFFICE,APPLE(although I dint see RIM in ur screenshot)but I suspect you may have a blackberry so if u do)uncheck anything RIM
8.Better yet,just click on disable all..don't worry,on startup,windows would sort out the REQUIRED,COMPULSORY COMPONENTS to load..u don't need to AUTOMATICALLY start an 'idle' SERVICE u aint using immediately.services are categorised into AUTO,AuTO(delayed start),MANUAL and DISABLE.for the ones u have unchecked,they become MANUAL if not COMPULSORY or REQUIRED so anytime u open such program,it would manually start.
9.When done,click apply or OK when u are done..restart ur system..
10.On a last note,for desired results,uninstall ur AVAST then I saw traces of NORTON(NOBuClient.eXe).which is used by NORTon online backup..pls check the configuration..its possible,it may be set to backup at regular interval.also remember to uncheck it too in msconfig..
If u remain unclear about the msconfig,pls make a snapshot of STARTUP and SERVICES then I advise

Really,most of the batteries are CHINA but there are some that are still alright.its shouldn't cost more than 7k and the screen ard 10-12k depending on the inches.as for the CHARGING problem..as I say,just cuz it works,doesn't mean its right!always check the OUTPUT RATINGS.a dell charger may charge an hp laptop but may spoil ur laptop(d dell is 19v 4.5A where hp is 18.5v 3.5A)so its 2high..

Stallion77: I need urgent help pls...my laptop freezes at every interval and i have tried defragmenting, disk clean-up and there seems to be no improvement. it even froze abit before i typed dis post. i hav deleted some movies thinking the memory was making it freeze but all to no avail. any little thing i do,the next thing i see is that (not responding) message at the top of the window both for internet pages and system windows. it also takes forever to open a system window!

Really,a couple of factors may be responsible.but here are tips..get this software UNIBLUE registry booster to remove all the unwanted entries that can slow the performance of a system(for some pple,they use ccleaner)step2.goto filehippo.com,get this software HIJACKTHIS..when u run it,choose SCAN and make a screenshot of the scan so I can help u analyse it(especially the 04 entries)that way,we can know if some rootkits are secretly running..MSCONFIG would not comprehensively reveal the results

dragnet: I may not know what variant it falls into but I've had personal experience with the p.0.r.n sex.y virus. Its very common in my school. All it does is to hide your files/folders and creates a shortcut in their place.
All you have to do is locate the directory in which its root is (and its usually in the user account folder or the start up folder) then delete it. You'd also need a .exe and .lnk reistry fix to restore the normal opening of your programs and applications. If you're skilled, you could do these via safe mode. If not see a tech. BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO FORMAT OR RE-INSTALL WINDOWS.

That's a simple one..if you have core DOS knowledge,just use ATTRIB -h -s /S /D *.. In d root directory of the infected drive..wen done,use DEL *.lnk to delete all the link files

The site is hirensbootcd.org.downloading aint the prob but how to use it.I have a collection of the utilities from version 9 till date(some powerful softwares like hdd gen have been removed in recent versions).for your quest,here are some softwares you can read about:find and mount(to mount partitions when an hard disk is bad)hdd regenerator(to repair bad sectors),dariks boot and Nuke..

Deji,so 9ja aint a commercial and advanced society?we are always tinking harder even with the limited resources available to us.F11 wipes the system clean without retaining important files on it.for me,I always like to attempt challenges thoroughly(understand what really happened and find another way out).in some cases,I even take a sample from an infected system(copying a few files unto a flash and testing it wit a clean system that has KASPERSKY and a sandboxie program).that way,I can know the name of d MALWARE and ow it behaves and in some cases,retain them for FUTURE ATTACKS!read about this network worm win32.KIDO(variants ir and ih)and u will be impressed!since I can't create a virus,I can make friends with them

Definitely a virus attack. If you dont have any important data inside,i would suggest you re-install windows. that's the easiest but if you got files in it,try and see if you can force fully install another antivirus to scan. like malwarebyte. that what i use at work and its works fine.

Its a fruitless effort tryin to forcefully install..its like having trained assassins in house already waiting for the innocent police to walk straight into an ambush.if u can't use the first recommended method.u can also use a rescue cd or live cd at startup.

deji2009: what's the full make and model of your computer
for example toshiba p300-20h. in practice I would
have backup all prudent data and reset the client
computer to factory settings, install update,
genuine antivirus software and that' it.
professionally speaking some of this machine
have the latest built in recovery tools. e.g.advent f10
pc angel, hp recovery f11 samsung recovery f4, toshiba f8
acer alt and f10 to mention a few.

Deji,that's a last resort.its not an impossible situation yet.as I said just remove harddrive and scan as removable in anoda CLEAN SYSTEM with strong antivirus then repair the OS

Too late dude..that's a SALITY trojan which propagates everytime u open an executable(exe).its first target is to attack your antivirus and make sure u can't even install any other..if immediately,you used system restore,u cld have save the situation.for now,all your programs:regedit,antivirus etc would stop responding.SOLUTION:remove ur hard drive and any related hardwares and find a clean system wit a strong antivirus(with upto date UPDATES)I normally use kaspersky..it would only disinfect the infected files.for avast,month tolerance..it wld delete..anyways,u might have to do an OS repair(if properly treated) or u do a clean format.
